Believe me...I've been in that region before and had a shoe thrown at me. It's more like a sandle, not like a Nike cross country shoe. That's all I can say about that.

I believe it's an insult in some cultures.
I love the look on his face after the first one.

Who knows what was on the shoes .. could have been anthrax.
They should have shot the bastard in the head 0.3 second before he threw the first shoe.

I was surprised that not only didn't they immediately swarm the thrower, but that nobody jumped in front of Bush. Maybe they aren't trained to take a shoe? Good thing the Pres is quick.
I suspect analysis will show those were special tactical shoes.
Look for congress to pass shoe control legislation soon. ;)

I didn't find it funny at all. It's not that it was Bush either, if it would of been Obama it would of made me just as mad. I don't find an attack on a US president funny, even if it was just a shoe. My ma used to get mad once in a while and throw her shoe at me and I'm here to tell you, those SOB's hurt.
I would love to show this guy the business end of my wing tips.
Thanks for the video though, I haven't seen this on the tube.

Everyone that was in that room would have walked through a metal detector. When the President gives a speech, he usually has people in the background with him and intermixed in that group is the SS. In this case the SS would have been to his front or behind the reporters.

Guy who threw it should have had a third eye in the center of his forehead before he threw the second shoe.:fl
I think whatever the punishment would have been for doing something like that to their president should be inforced by their gov't on the shoe thrower.
Like cut his feet off so he doesn't wear shoes anymore.

It doesn't matter that I don't like Bush. There's a symbolism that comes with that office. Now, I'm not saying that the guy should have been shot (I'm too much of a pacifist to call for something like that), but it wouldn't have surprised me if he had. It does concern me that the guy got the second shoe off and that through the whole thing Bush remained standing at the podium unprotected.

Really, what did people think was going to happen? There was more security at my high school when he came to visit as a governor (although this was right around when he announced his run for Presidency).
We were locked down and not allowed to leave our classrooms, yet the PRESIDENT walks almost nekkid into hostile territory...

That really surprises me. As soon as that guy began to move forward in an aggressive fashion the SS should have been all over him. It took way too long for the SS too react. I am truly surprised at that seeing as how good they typically are.
I mean that could have just been a diversion for a more serious attempt from another part of the room. They should have gotten him completely out of there. They never even got in front of him once they entered from the other room.
I'm sure there's gonna be some meetings on that one within the SS. Not to overreact here, but that is a little concerning.

Now beating your wife for not being obedient enough is perfectly acceptable.:hm

I recorded this last night, and laughed everytime I saw it... whether you love or hate Bush, the look on his face was pricless. I think Bush was even humored by it, when you watch the tape, as the SS was coming towards Bush to protect him, he puts his arm out to stop them he was not worried one bit.

Well, I suppose if you were walking around in a place where there might be dog piles, refuse, rotting offal piles, and who knows what, you might have something offensive on the bottom of your shoe and yeah, showing it to someone might have a reaction. Personally, I don't want to visit or live in places with garbage, dog crap, or other vile stuff so common you might step in it. I really can't think of anything else that might form some rational basis for the whole "bottom of the shoe insult" thing. I find it amusing though.
As far as throwing your shoe as a common insult, or to be so common as to have some relevance or tradition? :r:r That's just plain funny.
Scene: Two guys facing off......
Guy 1: shows the bottom of his shoe to guy two.
Guy 2: gets his panties in a bunch
Guy 1: sneers and shows the other shoe sole to Guy 2.
Guy 2: starts shaking uncontrollably, pops a vein in his forehead, bugs eyes. Takes off shoe and throws it at Guy 1.
Guy 1: dodges Shoe 1 from Guy 2.
Guy 2: Gets redder in the face. Removes Shoe 2, and missiles it at Guy 1.
Guy 1: smiles, because that is what he has been waiting for. Chases down Moron Boy 2 in bare feet and beats the ever loving stuffing out of him, catching him easily because he was dumb enough to throw both shoes at Guy 1, and can't run through garbage strewn street without puncturing his tender extremities on sharp detritus.

This is mostly what I've heard about the insult-factor associated with shoes, soles in Islam: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/middleeast/iraq/3776970/Arab-culture-the-insult-of-the-shoe.html
"The shoe is such an offensive symbol that it is seen as culturally rude to cross an ankle over a knee and display the sole of the shoe while talking to another person.
"The shoe is also considered unclean in the Muslim faith and believers must remove them before prayers.
"Wearing shoes in mosques is forbidden.

I didn't say anything about unnecessary force and I agree that they shouldn't beat him to a pulp. I also don't feel that geography should affect how you react when protecting the President.
The SS is a very professional organization and they shouldn't be beating people to a pulp without justification, such as the suspect resisting them. We definitely don't want the reputation of schoolyard bullies.
I feel they should have reacted much faster though and used the force necessary to subdue the aggressor until they gained control of the situation (which they did on the subdue part).
The first action of throwing a shoe is a sign of violence, whose to say what else he had on him. Luckily the second thing he threw was only his other shoe.
I think the part that really concerned me is that they didn't remove the President from a volatile situation like they should be trained to do. They left him standing there only to be protected by another country's Prime Minister. The SS is trained to act instinctively and protect the President from harm at ALL costs, even if it puts them in danger. I just feel they failed to react appropriately. :2
