THE NEW SEASON IS NEARLY UPON US!
Opening day: Saturday, 17 August, 2013
:noon :noon :noon :noon
While kicking around Cigar Asylum I've noticed the avatars, the sig lines, etc. I know there are some fútbol fans on here. I figured I'd start a thread where we could chat about it. Who do you support? What are your thoughts on, or hopes for your club in the coming season? Let's air it all here. Rumors, grudges, all of it. It's getting close! Can't wait! :D

Oh heck, let's start an MSL, UEFA, Serie A, Bundesliga, La Liga, Mexicali and all the rest banter thread as well.
Sorry, but the number of multiple highly specific threads that people are starting here when one generic thread would do, well, it's starting to be annoying. Nothing against you, you just happened to be the straw that met my camel's back.

Wow. Way to suck the fun out of a thing. You think all soccer leagues and competitions should be covered in one thread? That's nuts.

Gabe, thanks for getting us back on track -- Liverpool fan notwithstanding :p
As for my club, it'll be fascinating to see how Manchester United performs under David Moyes. We knew Sir Alex would one day go, but it's strange now that he's gone. Seemed he'd always be leading us to victory. And, of course, I don't expect anyone to feel sorry for us MU fans. Far from it. To be sure, we've had our share of success. And, for the time being anyway, it's still Ferguson's team. But, it's hard to imagine Moyes -- or anybody -- could ever achieve anything like what Sir Alex has done. David Moyes sure has his work cut out for him. Jeez Louise, can you imagine the pressure?? His predacessor was, few would argue, the best manager in the history of the sport. Those're the biggest boots to fill. Of all time. Ever. Obviously, as a United fan, I'm on the edge of my seat. Here's hoping Moyes continues our tradition of winning.

I am an Everton FC fan and don't have the highest hopes for this season. I'll be happy to see them in the middle of the table.
It will be interesting to see Moyes at the helm of MU. I think the success he's had at Everton, given their roster and financial status, proves that he is a great manager. No doubt that Ferguson was was the best, but I think MU is in good hands.

I have no clue how Chelsea will do this season. Should be interesting with the new manager, but besides that I have no idea what's going on with the club right now. I haven't paid attention to football news in quite a while, so I have no idea what's going on lol.
On a related note, I'll be in St Louis to see the Real Madrid v Inter Milan match. Seats are about 6 rows off the pitch. :)

With José Mourinho back in charge, Chelsea will do well. Mourinho is such a fascinating character. His ego is unparalleled. But he's got the talent, and the silverware, to back it up. Will be fun to watch. :2

I became a fan of Chelsea when I stumbled across a game of there's a few years ago. Can't remember who they were playing. The style of play at the time reminded me very much of the Redwings style of play in hockey. Lots of passes to setup the odd man situation for a quality scoring chance. Been a fan ever since.

When I knew absolutely nothing about soccer many years ago I watched a game on TV that was very interesting. It was a red team and a blue team and that's about all I knew lol. I did recognize the red team as Man U because everyone has heard of them. The blue team was winning so I decided that was my team from then on, even if they were not very good lol. That blue team happened to be Chelsea and I've followed them ever since. :)

A childhood friend of mine was a huge Liverpool fan because his father was from there. I always HATED "soccer" thought it was a girly sport, huge baseball fan and kinda followed American "football"! Then about 6 years ago another friend who is also a Liverpool fan had me over to watch a game (vs Gunners) at his house and the rest was history. 45 minutes non stop play, 20 minute break then another 45 minutes of fast tempo play, no commercials, no time outs, no 2 minute warnings. Now I can't watch American sports. One day I will take my family to Anfield (their stadium) to watch Liverpool. To all who dont follow the EPL YoTube the KOP singing You'll Never Walk Alone and you will understand the passion of being a LFC fan!

American sports have nowhere near the passion that football has worldwide.
When I started following English football, Liverpool had the history, tradition, and quality of top club. That and the link to the roots of rock and roll have made me a fan - even though recent years have been heartbreaking.

This is my take as well. It's just not the same. I still enjoy hockey and occasionally college hoops, but english/european football is where it's at for me. I'm also a big Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka fan and just got to see them play and score in person when they came to St. Louis over the weekend. Awesome times.
I don't know what you LFC folks did to Torres before he came to Chelsea, but he definitely needs his mojo back. I loved watching Torres play for LFC and I still think he's a fantastic talent. Chelsea just isn't a match for him maybe.

He lost his mojo at LFC. Which is why they let home go.
Great talent. But as in any sport, a great talent is nothing if it doesn't mesh with the team.

Any LFC peeps watch the Being Liverpool series? I'm not familiar with the inner workings of the club for sure, but I thought it was an awesome series. It gave some great insight into the "inner sanctum" of the club and also gave a glimpse into the lives of some of the players. If you haven't seen it, I think they still show it on Fox Soccer or Fox Soccer HD.

I've watched bits and pieces of it but didn't actually sit down and watch it! Agree with Peter about Torres, and the funny thing was when they signed Carroll and Suarez I was way more pumped about having Andy! Remember following him the year before and thinking man this dude is a talent, especially him getting a hat trick against LFC and the commentator saying Andy Carroll can do no wrong this year. So- yes a player must mesh with the club!

Curious to hear how everyone became a fan of their respective clubs....
What a great great question! I'd love to hear everyone's story as well. :tu
I came to support Manchester United in about as natural a way as any American can come to support a Premiership club. I played soccer from childhood through high school so I always had an appreciation for the sport. But my ties to Manchester United began quite by happenstance. In around 2000, Manchester United worked out a marketing deal with the Yankees Entertainment and Sports (YES) Network, which then began airing United's weekly Premier League matches on tape-delay. One Saturday I stumbled upon a broadcast. I didn't know who or what I was looking at, but I was instantly attracted to their attacking style and their winning ways. I tuned in again the following weekend, and so began my ritual of watching MU week in and week out. Before long, I knew the players and something of the club's character. I didn't yet know their well-decorated history, but I knew they were a joy to watch. Naturally, I began to develop an emotional stake in their results. You watch the same club week after week, it happens.
I guess you could say I caught the futbol bug. I wanted to experience matches in person. So when I could, I began attending Major League Soccer matches at Giants Stadium. The NY/NJ MetroStars had a young upstart goalkeeper, a New Jersey native named Tim Howard. Of course, he's famous now and enjoying great success at Everton, but back then he was just a local guy at an average club in a small-money league who was beginning to garner some attention. He began receiving regular call-ups to the U.S. Men's National Team. And he continued to excel. Jump forward to 2003, and hometown hero Tim Howard signed with the mighty Manchester United. MLS's Tim Howard, "Timmy," a local guy I'd met and chatted with, had signed with the famed Red Devils. This was awesome! Awesome for all concerned parties. And it further strengthened my allegiance to United.
As if that weren't enough to make me forever United, Manchester United then announced, as a tuneup ahead of the approaching Premier League season, that they would do a summer tour of the United States, playing a handful of top European clubs, in a handful of major American cities, Giants Stadium being one of them. So, I was present, and with great seats, to see Manchester United play Juventus on July 31, 2003 when Tim Howard made his debut for the club. It was a packed house: 79,005. The atmosphere in the stadium was something I'll always remember. It was absolutely buzzing. Like a massive beehive. The match was buzzing too. Exhibition match or not, both clubs came to play. United won that contest in grand fashion, 4-1 with beautiful and varied goals from four United legends: Giggs, Scholes, Van Nistelrooy, and Solskjaer.
The following summer, MU returned to Giants Stadium for another pre-season warmup after signing yet another young American, defender Jonathan Spector. Again, I was there. This time, United lost a very entertaining match to A.C. Milan in penalties. By this point, my commitment to United was unshakable. How could it not be after all of that magic just kind of fell in my lap? A couple years later I would find myself standing among fellow Manchester United supporters in the away end at Stamford Bridge, but that's a story for another time. I haven't yet made it to Old Trafford. Not yet.
I'm sure that was more than anyone wanted to know. But you asked, and I was happy to tell it. :)

There must be a place or two in Manhattan to catch a match and a smoke and I just don't know about it, right? Anybody know? If so, please clue me in. If not, that's an untapped market...

Well, no surprises for week one except for Arsenal's loss to Villa. And from what I'm reading, many would clam that result is no surprise either considering how little Wenger has done in the way of summer signings.
The badly depleted Gunners have a Champions League match on Wednesday too. That's probably not going to go well for them. Looks like it's gonna get worse for Arsenal before it gets better.
My boys, on the other hand, are off to a flying start. :noon And City's complete dismantling of Newcastle was bothersome. Just cuz I don't like to see City start so well. :tg

I think splitting the points was a fair result, but I'm disappointed. It was a home match. When you're one of the Big Four you expect to win your home matches. We're Manchester United. If we don't collect all three points at home, that ought to be disappointing, no? Now, should we have been given the penalty?
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e99/davidhudec/lampardhandball.gif (http://s37.photobucket.com/user/davidhudec/media/lampardhandball.gif.html)
Obviously, I'm biased. So ignore me if you'd like. But I say it's a penalty. I know Lampard is only a short distance from Cleverley so that's the 'ball played the arm' argument. However, it's apparent that Lampard prevented a clear goal-scoring opportunity with his outstretched arm inside the 18-yard box. We'll never know anything of Lampard's intent. We can't know the man's mind. But the fact is, he did jump into the path of the ball with his arm outstretched and he blocked the shot. I'd have given it. Would you?
It says in The Telegraph that Moyes is asking for clarification (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/manchester-united/10267459/David-Moyes-wants-action-on-handball-ruling-after-Manchester-United-denied-penalty-against-Chelsea.html). The issue, for me, is consistency. Either it is a penalty, or it is not a penalty, forever. Not sometimes it is, and sometimes it isn't. Anyone care to chime in?
Here's more from BBC Sport: What is 'deliberate' handball? (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/rules_and_equipment/4524354.stm) :rlz

As for the handball, I think it very easily could've been given, seeing other handballs that have been called. Maybe the ref let it slide, taking the distance from the kicker and the distance of his arm from his body into consideration. You guys should've had Mark Clattenburg in your lineup again. That would've fixed it.;)

First, let me say that having been an official, I appreciate and respect how difficult a job it is - in any sport. At the top level, the play moves extremely fast and officials don't have replay or time to deliberate. So I tend to give referees the benefit of the doubt most of the time.
Viewing the posted video, I can see a legitimate plea for a PK. However, consider this. The defender was no more than 2-3 yards when the ball was struck. Also, consider that when a player jumps/leaps, it is almost impossible to keep their hands at their side. I don't see where the arm was extended in an unnatural fashion and even at the highest level, players flinch. So I have no problem with the non-call. That being said, I would not criticize the referee if he HAD called the PK. A bit harsh, maybe. But again, I would support his decision. A call close enough to legitimately go either way.
Besides, it was ManEffingU. So I don't feel bad. :D

I agree with all of the above. Especially the last bit lol.:D Even being a Chelsea fan, I wouldn't have blamed the ref for a bad call had he called it a PK. A bit harsh maybe, but like yourself, I think it could've legitimately gone either way.

Peter, I have to say, that was a well-reasoned, level-headed contribution to the thread, which I'm sure everyone agrees is your hallmark here on Cigar Asylum...
You're certain you're a referee? :lr
Honestly, Peter, it's been years since you told me back on CS, so I completely forgot you're a referee! Here's a little joke I think everyone will enjoy, but it's especially for you, my fave Liverpool fan...
The Ref and the Funeral Procession
In the middle of the match, the referee suddenly blows his whistle to stop play when he sees a long funeral procession on the road that runs alongside the field. He closes his eyes and bows his head.
'Wow,' said the yellow-carded striker. 'That is the most thoughtful and touching thing I've ever seen. You truly are a kind man. I'll never think badly of a referee again.'
The referee replies, 'Thanks son, we were married nearly 30 years.'

Had we not gotten all three points at home against Palace, I'd have really begun to worry. Beautifully executed free-kick from Rooney.
Also, while some referees are remembered for their game-changing wrong calls, I'll remember this game's official, Jon Moss, for making four very difficult correct calls -- even though 3/4 did not go United's way. :salute:
Hear that, pnoon? Props to the ref! :D

Shelvey was the pivotal player for both teams. ;)
Liverpool was smart to let him go.
Brilliant header to assist on Michu's goal.
Coutinho's injury looks like he'll miss some playing time. Sakho looked good. Moses played well. As did Skrtel.

We're finding ways to win games in Champions League at least. Hopefully we'll make some quality signings next month. I'm forever an optimist when it comes to my club. But I can see the writing on the wall. It's probably too late for us in the league this season.
But, hey, all United fans knew this day would eventually come. It's a time of transition for us. Only a fool would've expected Moyes to pickup where Fergie left off without a stumble. I believe my Reds will eventually be back on top. Just not as soon as I'd like.

BIG game on Sunday, very nervous! But will set the pace for the next few games No Sturridge and Bo Captain Fantastic!! If we win this it will not only boost morale but also bring in better talent next month, looks like Alberto is out and unfortunately Aspas has to stay due to lack of attacking options unless we can bring some in ( was reading Real Betsis and Valencia want him) would love to loan him out or get rid of him all together!! As for Skrtel I don't know what to say 2 OG's in last 3 games! Haven't been able to follow the league as much as I wanted this season, but I have to stand by Manchester United. It's been strange without Sir Alex, but all good things must come to an end.

Having trouble posting pics, wanted to post one of an emotional Stevie G after the game. He was saying "don't let this (feeling) go" in his huddle after the game, This will be the first time in his career that LFC win the title! Great win for my boys! Skrtel is on fire (has more goals than Torres this year :tu ). sterling showed great composure, patience and confidence with his goal. And Coutinho's goal was sheer precision!! On to Norwich will be tough although Suarez averages 3+ goals vs them because if they lose they are relegated so they will be fighting for dear life! YNWA!!

Damn I liked him hahahaha, I heard Giggs is interim (interesting!) and Van Gaal will most likely take over next year.

As all of you know I am a die hard Liverpool fanatic but all I can say is great game Palace! Well deserved draw. Liverpool relaxed to much, Rogers should've put Agger in the 70th minute. Suarez was being a ***** (I'm sorry) he had a great game and tied the record for most goals in one season. Second place is worlds apart from where they were last year and am thrilled about seeing them in Champions league!! YNWA Boys!! We can win it for the skipper next year!

Moyes did so much worse than I ever imagined he'd do. :hn No one fears ManUtd anymore. Can hardly wait to see how it goes under Van Gaal.

Does anyone have a good source for watching BPL games online? Some games I would like live, but a one or two day delay is fine with me most of the time. I'm too old to remember any spoilers.
We gave up cable TV so now I am stuck. ESPNFC may work, but you never know which games are going to be video streamed and which ones for which their "streaming" means twitter comments. Also, while still a week out, ESPNFC does not list BPL as one of the leagues that they stream.
