I looked back to june of last year and didn't see a thread.

So post up your favorite covers, songs that in your opinion are better than the original.

I have to start with the no brainer, Hurt as performed by Johnny Cash. After hearing Johnny's version Trent Reznor said he was in awe and that Johnny Cash made this song his own.

Johnny Cash does a lot of amazing covers, a couple of my personal faves are "Bridge Over Troubled Waters" and "Personal Jesus".

Though not a big country fan, I do love Wille Nelson's takes on many old standards..."Somewhere Over the Rainbow" is the first to come to mind.

My all-time least favorite cover, which many people seem to love, is Metallica's version of Bob Seger's "Turn the Page"....just brutal.

Foo fighters and Brian may do a nice pink Floyd have a cigar.
Neither better than original IMO

I have to agree with some of the other posters. I think Hurt is one of the definitive covers and in a rare case it surpassed the original in quality. I love a good cover song Band of Gold by the Afghan Whigs is really cool cause an out there Alternative band does a great cover of a disco song.

I'm doing a Blues Bros marathon, and flashed on this old thread. I stand by my original post here, and offer the below from Wikipedia in support:

Franklin's cover was a landmark for the feminist movement, and is often considered as one of the best songs of the R&B era, earning her two Grammy Awards in 1968 for "Best Rhythm & Blues Recording" and "Best Rhythm & Blues Solo Vocal Performance, Female", and was inducted in the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1987. In 2002, the Library of Congress honored Franklin's version by adding it to the National Recording Registry. It is number five on Rolling Stone's list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. It was also included in the list of Songs of the Century, by the Recording Industry of America and the National Endowment for the Arts.
