View Full Version : Silound's Dog-Rocket Review Challenge!

Silound

Well, in a previous post related to a Cremosa, I challenged anyone with a strong stomach and no sense to try a handful of terrible cigars I have sitting around. (http://www.cigarasylum.com/vb/showpost.php?p=111406&postcount=39)

Dan (Hardz) and Mark (borndead1) were insane enough to take up my challenge!

Here's the way this works:

Dan and Mark will each smoke the 16 cigars I sent them in order.
For each smoke, they will take pictures and post a review in this thread (hopefully entertaining)
After they have posted all 16 reviews, I will send them each a nice little care package of worthwhile smokes and some other goodies to help them recover from the trauma.

Good luck guys, this should be good for a few laughs!

I'm an evil bastard aren't I?

No Cremosas, sorry. I honestly don't own any and never will.

The List

Cigar # Notes

Nicaraguan robusto. These will NOT humidify past the brittle hard stage, no matter how high the humidity they’re kept at. I keep them in my 55% long term box. No name to them, just a cheap bundle cigar.
Similar to Cigar #1, except these are some unbranded product by Rolando Reyes. Obviously, this should be warning enough for most people who read reviews, however this Dominican treat should be enough to kill you and put you out of your misery.
Some unbranded Honduran junk that I got as a bonus from a “hookup.” These things came as brutally damaged as they look now.
God only knows where these came from, I’ve had them so long I think they’re multiplying. I got a box of 100 at one time as give-away cigars. They came looking like hell. Marketed as Honduran, these may at best be what was scraped up from a dead Honduran dog.
Supposed Cuban knockoffs, these are about as Cuban as I am. Also, they smell like a leprous goat. Pity, because they honestly look decent. I haven’t a clue where these are from.
Where did I die and end up in hell for buying these Nicaraguan crap sticks? I hand these out to people who beg for a cigar.
They smell Honduran, but I don’t know what the frick they are, or where the frick I got them. I think that sums these up nicely.
Unknown in brand and origin, these were a “gift” from a well meaning friend who brought them back from Mexico. I refused to smoke any after his last gift, and I still do.
Bob’s Bundled Cigar Company cigars. Honest to God, that’s what they were called. They existed for a grand total of a month or less before going under, and this was their “flagship cigar. I don’t remember to this day why my boss ever bought a bundle to try from the rep, but I remember where he stashed the 23 remaining sticks. Hope you enjoy this one.
Ok, another “no-clue” bundle. Something from Cigar Connection in Florida that costs $11 a bundle….4 years ago. 4 years has done nothing but improve these cigars….improve how badly they taste.
Another “your guess is as good as mine” cigar.
Cuvee Blanc from the DR. Biggest disappointment ever to me, because I’ve had a decent Cuvee in the past. Worst branded cigar I’ve had in ages.
Bahia Seconds. Something I found at the B&M and bought foolishly thinking they would age to be something decent.
Occidental Reserve. These aren’t exactly dog rockets, but they’re far from my list of good smokes.
J. Fuego 777. While some call this a good cigar, I’m afraid I relegated it to the “give-away to get rid of them” pile. Nicaraguan puros, they’re something short of terrible.
Flor de Girard. One of the local B&M’s here has this made as their house brand. Aside from sucking pure ammonia, they’re not likely to kill you…I don’t think anyway.

Now reviewing: Dog Rocket #1 Sorry, no camera. I am meeting up with HK3 later this week and will ask him to bring his camera and snap a few pics.

From Silound's description: #1. Nicaraguan robusto. These will NOT humidify past the brittle hard stage, no matter how high the humidity they’re kept at. I keep them in my 55% long term box. No name to them, just a cheap bundle cigar.

My take: Not an attractive cigar. Several blemishes including some black spots on the wrapper. Cap is very crooked but cuts ok. Can see several stems in the clipped head. This cigar looks to be short filler.

Pre-light draw: :pu OMG, Silound, are you sure this thing is made from tobacco? Aw man...what the hell did I get myself into? Pre-light draw tastes like mildewy hay.

Lit it up and smelled the smoke coming from the foot. Smells like....mildewy hay that has just been set on fire.

First few draws are very harsh. Flavor is bad but not unbearably so. Tastes like...mildewy hay that is burning. At this point if I had to guess I would say this was a Thompson cigar.

It's not the worst cigar I've ever smoked. The flavor on the draw is not *too* nasty, but the nose exhale is making my nose run and it leaves an aftertaste of....

can you guess?.....

Mildewy hay!

This..."cigar" is supposedly Nicaraguan, but I swear I can taste some low quality Honduran tobacco as well. Oh, almost forgot. Burn and draw are absolutely perfect! :)

LMAO!!!!!! I just did a flame purge and it made my smoke detector go off!!!! :r:r:r

Around 1/3 through, and amazingly the mildewy flavor is almost gone. Maybe thanks to the flame purge? Still making my nose run to nose exhale.

OK, I'm gonna take a REALLY big draw so I can get a good spectrum (rectum?) of flavors. Will do a French inhale, a nose exhale, and concentrate on the finish.

OK, after doing that I gotta tap out. :( Made it about halfway through.

Final thoughts:

Like I said, this was not the worst cigar I've ever smoked, but it was pretty nasty.

You're about to find out. :D

Dog Rocket #2:

From Silound's description: #2 Similar to Cigar #1, except these are some unbranded product by Rolando Reyes. Obviously, this should be warning enough for most people who read reviews, however this Dominican treat should be enough to kill you and put you out of your misery.

My Take: Aww man...Rolando Reyes? :( I can't believe that dude has been working with tobacco for so long and still can't make a decent cigar.

This cigar is a toro size. Not a bad looking stick, it has weight and was rolled pretty well. The wrapper smells nice, pre-light draw is grassy but not nasty.

First few draws...not terrible but definitely not tasty. Grassy and a little harsh. The aroma coming from the foot is not unpleasant but not good either. Honestly at this point this cigar does not taste Dominican. To me it tastes Honduran or maybe even Mexican...?

About 1" in the cigar is getting a musty, mildewy flavor that I have come to associate with low quality or improperly fermented tobacco. It is a flavor I have tasted in many El Cheapo cigars, specifically Dominican and Honduran. I would bet that if I ripped this cigar apart I would find green tobacco in it.

The flavor of this cigar is not unbearable but not enjoyable at all. It actually tastes better than dog rocket #1. :r Burn and draw are perfect and the ash is really nice; almost white with nice rings.

Actually, the flavor on the draw is not too bad, but the finish and aftertaste is where I taste the mildew. Like the cigars were aged in a mildewy basement. The aroma coming from the foot is not bad. The cigar smells better than it tastes.

I read that Rolando Reyes personally inspects every cigar made at his factory. This is an amazing feat, especially for a man who is blind and has no sense of taste or smell. :D

About 1/3 in...the harshness that I tasted at the beginning is coming back. The smoke burns my nose, and I am gettin mucous in the back of my throat. The smoke is "burning" my tongue, the same sensation I get from a machine made paper binder cigar like AyC or Garcia y Vega.

My nose is running, my tongue is burning, and I have a throat full of mucous. Are you happy, Silound?

I made it to around the halfway point, at which time I tossed this cigar in the toilet where it belongs.

Final thoughts: Some nasty tobacco was put into this cigar. It's a shame, because the wrapper is not bad and the cigar was obviously constructed well. Senior Reyes needs to let somebody else blend his cigars, and needs some better Quality Control when it comes to leaf selection.

Silound
12-26-2008, 11:25 PM
Bwahahaha! :r:r:r:r:r

You do have a thing for that mildewy flavor though, I must admit.

After checking back on my notes and packaging, all the origins I gave you are accurate up to seals and boxes/bundle labels. If they aren't what origin they're supposed to be, then I was as misled as you now are.

On a side note, RR is about the biggest joke in the cigar industry :)

UGH....what a way to start the new year.

Dog Rocket #3

From Silound's description: 3. Some unbranded Honduran junk that I got as a bonus from a “hookup.” These things came as brutally damaged as they look now.

My take: Churchill size, ugly wrapper with a couple of big vericose veins near the foot. The wrapper smells really nice though. Pre light draw is a light tobacco flavor. Alright, lighting it up now. :hn

First few draws are suprisingly quite nice. Tobacco with a floral aftertaste.

Silound, are you trying to trick me? Is this really a dog rocket? Is this turning into "Silound's Blind-Taste-Test-See-If-I-Can-Fool-These-Suckas" Review Challenge? ;)

This cigar tastes pretty good so far (about 1" in). If I didn't know any better, I would swear...nah...I better smoke more of it before I say what I was gonna say.

About 1/3 in...Silound, if you think this cigar is a dog rocket, I will gladly take the rest of them off your hands.

Alright, that's it. I'm gonna say it. I think Silound slipped this cigar into the mix to try to trick me. I think this cigar is a Cuban. Honestly. If it's not, then you can all have your laughs, but that's my story. Triple cap, green splotches on the wrapper, and the flavor and aroma...I call :bs

OK, I can't write a funny/gross review on this cigar because it's a great smoke. I'm gonna smoke it, kick back, and check to see if Silound comes clean. :D

EDIT: I swear this thing is a CC. It's not rolled very well, so maybe it's a fake from the island, but man...if this is not a Cuban, then I'm a fool and you may all point and laugh.

To start off, I'm a little behind due to a 2.5 week shipping time from our buddy here to me, so I let them rest in the humi for a week or so. Below is what I wrote on Dec 31st....

So after reviewing the Cremosa Silound offered up his worst sticks for people to review. Since I'm up for a challenge and life experiences, good and bad, I accepted his generous offer. There are something like 18-20 cigars, I'm going by memory as they're at home and I'm in a bar.... Yea it's cold in Michigan right now. So I'm waiting on Guinness Stew and drinking an ice water.

I'm starting with number 1, looks to be maybe 48-50 rg and about 5-5.5 inches long. No real armoa from the stick itself.
http://hardcz.net/cpm/albums/uploads/silound/1.jpg

Pre light draw... I'm kicking myself for saying this, but it tastes just like hay! I've never had anything that tasted like hay before, though this reminds me of my youth, when I'd take a piece of hay / straw from a bail and suck on it for an hour or two.

Upon lighting up there is about medium pepper coming with a dry sort of taste in my mouth. I'm able to nose exhale with slight burning... so far I don't see why this is a "worst" stick of all time.

A little over an inch in and the spice has mellowed down to a light pepper with hints of blah. My mouth tastes like I licked the wrapper of a dirty cigar.

http://hardcz.net/cpm/albums/uploads/silound/2.jpg

So I'm about 1/4 in now...and the pepper is still mild, hitting the front sides and back of my tongue. The smoke tastes like I've lit up an old recipt from CVS. The nose exhale is getting more harsh.

Seriously...what is in this cigar that's leaving a fimly nasty aftertaste? it's not pleasant, though not the worst I've had.

http://hardcz.net/cpm/albums/uploads/silound/3.jpg

My lips are starting to tingle.... I seriously think they found some dried leaves, found a way to suction all flavor out of them and packed them into a wrapper that had a similar treatment. I taste pepper, and just a burnt taste like that of burning paper, but slightly smoother than that.... heh... yea I know from experience... was stupid when I was 14....

Roughly half way through and I'm getting a bitter finish with a burning in my throat, I haven't gone camping in a while or inhaled campfire smoke...why does it burn so bad? What did you do to me? Pepper is coming on more strongly now, and my mouth is contorting because it doesn't want to finish, something of a cross between a disgust, sour, and fear. Wrapper is starting to peel a little.

http://hardcz.net/cpm/albums/uploads/silound/4.jpg

This aftertaste is killer.... I'm letting it rest 1-3 minutes between puffs but now I just discovered I must have a cut on the roof of my mouth because it's burning... my lips are feeling like I smoked 5-6 cigars in a row and it's getting more bitter with the pepper taking a seat to mild.

So a little over 2/3 burned and I really can't take any more. I have a little headache coming on...probably will settle as I drink some water, my mouth burns, tastes how I'd imagine tar would taste for cig smokers. There's a nasty film it seems that's left in my mouth.

http://hardcz.net/cpm/albums/uploads/silound/4.5.jpg

So I'm dieing to know what this was so I can strike it from my list of cigars to buy. Overall, it had a good draw, great burn, though nasty tastes. Slight pepper, with lots of nastiness.

http://hardcz.net/cpm/albums/uploads/silound/5.jpg

I'm working on washing this away.... hmm maybe I'll light up something I've had before....

http://hardcz.net/cpm/albums/uploads/silound/6.jpg

Thanks for the experience. I'll get to reviewing the others soon.

OH YEA!!!

The food was tasty also.

Dog Rocket #4

From Silound's description: God only knows where these came from, I’ve had them so long I think they’re multiplying. I got a box of 100 at one time as give-away cigars. They came looking like hell. Marketed as Honduran, these may at best be what was scraped up from a dead Honduran dog.

My take: A perfecto shape cigar, similar to a Hemingway...that has been dropped, run over, and kicked across the road. Man, this thing is beat up. The head is split, the foot is split, there is a big gaping tear in the wrapper...but surprisingly it draws perfectly and burns well too.

Honestly, this cigar was not bad at all. Mild, nice amount of smoke, flavor was one-dimensional but not bad at all. If I had to guess, I would say it was a JR Alternative to a Hemingway.

So far, the first 2 have been dog rockets, #3 was a fantastic smoke and I truly believe Silound made a mistake :D...and dog rocket #4 was not a premium smoke but in my opinion not what I would consider a dog rocket.

I met KenS, Lee, and HK3 for a smoke today. Ken was nice enough to snap a pic:

This cigar is a larger ring gauge maybe 48 and about 7 inches long. it has a smooth papery wrapper, looks to be a decent looking smoke, good draw and light aroma.

http://hardcz.net/cpm/albums/uploads/silound/2-1.jpg

First thought is it's tobacco, it's not too bad, has a little bit of an untasty flavor on the middle back of my tongue, not too harsh, just barely there.

About an inch in, it's still semi harsh, though it tastes dry, and like something burning...no pun intended. No real flavors other than some tobacco and something I'm trying to figure out.

So making my way into the stick, about 1/4 way through, and the slight dry burn in the back of my throat is there, reminded of that smoking recipts again. I wish this cigar had flavor but all I get is a very subtle pepper with tobacco then it's gone, leaving a slight taste of what I imagine that tar would be.

Well something I just wanted to point out, this ash is sticking on quite well, I don't trust it past an inch, but hell this cigar seems to have some pretty good construction. Now only if the taste wasn't void of any real flavor it'd be great. At this point I'm going to suspect that there really won't be any flavor other than the dry burning tobacco with the hint of pepper. I'm sad, but I guess this is one of Silound's "Worst cigars ever"

Also for reference I'm letting the cigar rest about 2-3 minutes between puffs to try to keep it cool. At this point I can't just drink the water, so I ordered my old friend, meet Tall Guinness.

http://hardcz.net/cpm/albums/uploads/silound/2-beer.jpg

So the Guinness might be helping... there's an ever subtle hint of a sweetness, like that if you've ever tasted flower petals, though it's quickly overshadowed with the burning tobacco and hints of pepper.

So I'm not hitting the Guinness hard, to keep the cigar profile alive, but really I have to from time to time because I get this slimey nastiness that needs to be washed away. One dimensional, I'm feeling... warm, and not so good....

Ok seriously this is starting to get bad. Has an almost sour taste to it, pepper is kicking up, though strangely enough there is little after taste, just that nasty sourness now.

Holy crap this must be a great cigar.....*cough* Because my mouth is burning and I have a pinch in the back of my throat, hurts just a little. For a brief moment it tasted almost like the toasted flavor in roasted nuts, but then was gone and I was overshadowed with hot burning swill from the battlefields of an ancient civilization.

Seriously I'm trying, but with every puff, this is getting worse. I have a disgusting tar, tobacco, burning *pepper* sour note in my mouth. I'm going to put this down. It's got maybe 1-2 inches I could smoke...but why go through that much suffering.... this is bad...

http://hardcz.net/cpm/albums/uploads/silound/2-face.jpg

Downing some Guinness now.... ok that's a little better....

And as a chaser I brought along a RASS.

Getting a nice mellow well rounded flavor. it's not quite creamy...but almost there, has a good tobacco flavor, not harsh in the slightest, very smooth, slight toasty flavors with a hint of hazelnut.... oh yea wrong place...

http://hardcz.net/cpm/albums/uploads/silound/2-finish.jpg

Thanks bro for that dog rocket.... I'm cringing at the next one...now to go read the other review and what you thought of it...

Dog Rocket #5

From Silound's description: #5 Supposed Cuban knockoffs, these are about as Cuban as I am. Also, they smell like a leprous goat. Pity, because they honestly look decent. I haven’t a clue where these are from.

My take: Lonsdale sized cigar, very well rolled honestly. Solid stick, no soft spots, perfect draw. Pre-light draw is a very faint grassy flavor.

First few draws are very bitter and grassy, with a sour aftertaste. The aroma coming from the foot is pretty nice though, like baking cocoa. The flavor of the cigar is not good at all so far. :pu I will try to tough it out though.

About 1" in, same bitter grass flavor, with an aftertaste of rancid butter. Man this thing is nasty. Why, oh why did I sign up for this? :(

About 2" in, the flavor profile of this cigar is showing an amazing complexity. I can taste grass, hay, pencil lead, and rotten milk. I do not, however, taste the notes of leprous goat that Silound described. Obviously my palate is not as refined as his.

OK, I lasted as long as I could. Made it almost halfway. Dog Rocket #5 was truly a dog rocket.

Only 11 more dog rockets to go! Yay! :D

Doh! Thought I posted this before, though after being sick all weekend, time to play catch up...here is number 3.

Lighting up tonight with with a guinness a nice lady by me and yea... a little fear.

http://hardcz.net/cpm/albums/uploads/silound/3-beer.jpg

So it's got a smooth wrapper, somewhat tight draw... cigar looks to be about 7 inches, maybe 46 rg.

Prelight draw isn't much, just some tobacco flavor that is pleasant.

Very smooth cigar, in about half an inch, not bad, nothing great though, just kind of the tobacco flavor. Angelb says it smells like a bowling alley.

just over an inch now, this cigar is very smooth, it's hard to believe it's a "worst dog rocket ever" though you can tell it's probably a cheaper smoke because of the lack of flavor really. To me this screams that it was a mild cigar that has aged a little bit and mellows out, maybe dried out at one point. Reminds me a little of the Dominican Primeros. http://www.cigar.com/cigars/viewcigar.asp?brand=490

I'm thinking....I should start doing this for a living, I could quit my job and smoke dog rockets all day..... yea that's a great idea!
So back to the cigar... I'm starting to develop a nasty taste in the back of my throat... still smooth, still void of much flavor. I taste tobacco, and have a lingering aftertaste of it, but that's all. I was hoping I might gain something. Where's the barnyard, where's the manure? I need to taste farm animal poo!

O M G!!!! FLAVOR!!!!

For an infinitesimal second there was a little spice on the right side of my tongue. Now this could of been a taste bud dieing because of the lack of flavor, but who really knows. I'm going to be on the cigars side in this case. YOU GO #3!

Ok, so I was correct, there is flavor. Now letting it rest 2-3 min between puffs... it stays mellow, if you puff slightly quicker the spice comes out. The other flavor that is developing is a dry earthy flavor. Imagine if you will dry grass, thin twigs that are dried out, it's something like that...earthy...yea... guess that's the right one.

Ok so it's starting to get gross... there is a slight hint of black pepper, the "earthy" flavor is bleh... the tobacco flavor isn't there really anymore, and the flavor that's over powering tastes like a wet tobacco tar flavor...BLEH! I'm told...it now smells like wet bowling alley carpet.... you heard it right here folks!

Seriously... that was a bad puff.... dunno how to describe it. It was foul.... a little bitter with sourness and ummmmm hints of rotten potatoes.

I'm getting a numbing feeling on my tongue... this sucks... my lips are fine, I have a nsatay taste, I have to down guinness to help, but it's not much... Not as bad as the previous two but still... it's not a good experience.

http://hardcz.net/cpm/albums/uploads/silound/3-drinking_beer.jpg

I'm sorry brother, I must put this down, my tongue feels like it's been pumped full of novicane! OK not quite numb, but all of my taste buds fail to respond to any flavor other than the nasty burning twigs and hints of black pepper, oh and that overwhelming nasty tar taste...BLEH!

Here's number 4!

Overall Appearance and presentation 60%
Lighting and burning properties 60%
Construction properties 70%
Taste properties 68.6%

This cigar is giving a pepper flavor in my mouth, slightly sweet on the nose exhale, leaving your mouth full of pepper on the finish with a light tobacco *leather* flavor.
Describe any changes in body or flavor:
As the cigar progresses to the first third it's developing a bitter harsh flavor to it, reminds me of what a marker might taste like.
It continues to gain in strength, both in the spice and the bitter departments. At first this was going to be a good smoke, though I'm seeing why this has been labeled a rocket…
As the pepper builds this cigar develops a spicey tone that will burn the tip of your tongue off…. Not a pleasant experience.
Comments: The ash hangs on a while, though I don't trust it. The burn is somewhat even, though will tunnel slightly then correct itself, required no touch ups though wasn't even the whole smoke either.
I was thrown out of the Coney Island… called ahead asking if they still allowed cigar smoking..they said yes… that's why I went there…. Then found out after I finished my meal, drinking bad coffee and writing this review that it wasn't…..
So anyways I finished this cigar in my truck. It continued to become more bitter and spicy, making my tongue burn with each draw. I didn't nub this by any means, though smoked the whole thing… it was pretty bad.

Lighting up number 5. Don't have the camera today. It's roughly 6.5 inches long, thinner rg, maybe 44? The cigar has a fresh and sweet tobacco smell to it. Predraw is giving a grass flavor. Drink today is a Powers Barstool Brand Rootbeer, made with Michigan Sugar!

Initial flavor sucks.... This can't be good. It tastes like how you'd imagine the black charred part of a stick in the camp fire would taste. My bitter sensors are going crazy.

Quarter inch in, my mouth is developing a burn on the roof and on a few parts of the tongue. Surprisingly this is smooth on the exhale, the flavors are of a sour and leather mix, with the spice burning the tip of my tongue and a few other parts of my mouth. It leaves an unpleasant flavor in your mouth that I'm trying to figure out.

Over an inch in, the burning is continuing to grow in my mouth, the bitter is powerful leaving sour afternotes, my mouth is watering and asking me what it ever did to me.

The cigar stays spicy, and bitter, it's leaving a slight pepper in the aftertaste.... at least the sour notes have faded away....

As the cigar finishes, it is very bitter, super spicy, just burning the hll out of my mouth. Better than the last few but not good in the slightest.

#6...

This cigar has a cedar wrapper, looks pretty decent wrapper wise.... light tobacco smell to it.

When lighting it, it's decent, smooth, especially on the exhale. It has a strange flavor in your
mouth, something almost like a weak chemical flavor....

The cigar continues to grow in the chemical flavor... I have to take back my word... this cigar is terrible...
if you could smoke it through your nose it'd be great... nose exhale has a mild tobacco flavor, though the chemical
taste is just something I'm having a hard time getting over.

Construction and Ash are average, flavor is disgusting...

It's a tangy zing on your tongue kind of flavor... I'm not going to nub this thing....

I will say it gives off a huge amount of smoke that is very smooth, I love this about the cigar.
The nose exhale is mild tobacco "leather" and pleasant, something that's about average flavor.

In the mouth however, it's like I'm licking a marker. Brother I don't know WTF this was but throw them away.

Smoked number 7 yesterday too... why? Because I hate myself?

dare I say lancero?

stick smells good, like tobacco.

Taste is mild leather with light spice. This cigar is pretty good...doubt I'll change this view...

smooth smoke, lingering aftertaste of the spice that's tingling the tip of my tongue and lips, this is a pleasant smoke.

The flavor profile of a light leather / tobacco, with spice that gets stronger as the stick burns, leaving a smoldering burn. There is nothing special about this cigar that I enjoyed particularly. The nose exhale was excellent emphasizing the above flavors and hinting at a toasted something or another, did not burn my nose, just my lips and tongue. This was a pleasant burn, nothing too strong. Aftertaste was that of licking a cigar wrapper, not too good, not too bad.

Silound, honestly I wouldn't say this one is a dog rocket. I might be inclined to buy one from time to time if the price point was low, though would not have a problem smoking it again.

So I'm starting stick 8.. I brought a hoyo des dieux to compare flavors :hm

To start, this stick is rolled tight, has a veiny wrapper. Prelight draw is a sweet leather, something refreshing tasting.

Did I mention this thing was tighter than a vir*** on prom night?

Initial thoughts, it's got a little bit of non pleasant spice hitting between the tip and middle tongue. Also it's giving a flavor of spoiled tobacco. This smoke is very smooth though, no harshness to be found. Too bad it has no good flavors to it.

The band is starting to unravel from the foot, though the cigar is spongy and has been kept at 67% RH I feel like I'm trying to suck a triple thick shake through a straw... just not working...

I gave this cigar another 20 minutes till my jaw hurt. my tongue is burning from the spice and I have a rather unpleasant flavor in it. I'm actually interested in trying a second that hopefully wouldn't be plugged... interested in a trade Silound?

WAIT.... NEVER MIND!!!! I forgot I have 8 more of these to go.

Hardcz

No. 9.

No pics, smoked in the truck while doing errands...

The wrapper is very smooth and looks well put together. Feels a little tight, no real smell to the cigar. It has a taste of hay on the prelight draw. The cut was good.

Upon lighting up the hay was gone. I received a blast of harsh spice and tobacco. The nose exhale surprisingly worked...or maybe I'm just burning my nose all with these dog rockets? Anyways as the cigar progressed it had a flavor change, it took on the taste of burnt grilled vegetables...

To put an idea on this flavor, get a green pepper, go out to your grill, and leave it on there till it turns black. Eat that black stuff. That is what this cigar tasted like. I set it down about half way to mail a few boxes, came back and it was still smoldering, I just did a little touch up and it was good to go. Roughly 1/3 left and I pitched it to the gutter gods. After this I smoked a partagas lonesdale and oliva o classic maduro. Really puts a perspective on what you're missing and gaining on purchasing quality smokes.

Dog Rocket #6

Silound's description: Where did I die and end up in hell for buying these Nicaraguan crap sticks? I hand these out to people who beg for a cigar.

My take: A torpedo shaped cigar with a cedar sleeve, which was obviously used to cover up one of the butt ugliest wrappers I've ever seen. The cigar is heavy and feels solid though. Pre light draw is....aww man, not again! Moldy hay. :( Silound, do you keep your humidor in a barn?

First few draws are sour and grassy. The aroma coming from the foot is AWFUL. Like burning urine. Like if you peed on a grill or something.

About 1" in, and the flavor has changed to match the aroma. Scorched urine. Imagine peeing on a restaurant-style flat grill and breathing and tasting the smoke from your burning pee. This cigar is pure torture. Interrogators could make terrorists confess simply by lighting one of these cigars and blowing smoke in their faces.

2" in...oh my god this cigar tastes awful...but what a complex smoke! The aroma of scorched urine has been replaced by a stench sort of like an overheated car engine. Like burning oil or power steering fluid.

Gawd, man, the flavor of this "cigar" is unbearable. It tastes like a dead animal smells. Like picking up a dead rat, lighting its face, and puffing on its butthole.

I can't take any more. This is probably the worst cigar I've ever had.

Oh yeah guys, I forgot. I may have come across another nasty crap stick in my travels, and I think this one tastes worse than any of the others. You guys interested in a 17th stick? :ss

So smoking number 11 today...no real aroma coming from it. Prelight taste is likea dried leaves in fall.

This is a light stick, tastes like burning wood. There is a spice coming though with a burning after taste.... Not pleasant, not completely horrible.... could be worse.. *I'll probably regret saying that.....*

ok, last few puffs make me eat my words.... I'm getting a sour nastiness in my mouth. I imagine if you licked a modly piece of wood sitting on the forest floor, it might taste better. It's an earthy disgusting flavorl.

The taste only is intensifying as I smoke it, picking up more sour and earth tones, tastes like black moist soil.... *don't ask* lol

Gonna go see wtf this thing was....

Hardcz
02-08-2009, 11:50 AM
OK I love to be in pain I guess... number 12....

It's a huge cigar, looks like a cuaba salamone in size...just HUGE!!

not much smell or flavor other than a faint tobacco.

First impression is a musty flavor with a lot of smoke.

Flavor..... you get a moldy musty flavor... something you smell when going into a house that has been uninhabited for a few years put into flavor... .then after that you get a burning dry leave wafting through your senses. From the start, you KNOW this cigar will suck.

A few inches in now... Mold is gone, musty is still there, a hint of spice, and an aftertaste of literally wet leather that's been soaking for hours.

It's getting pretty bad. Aftertaste is like the smoke coming from a camp fire, just dries out your throat and makes you hate life.

Musty is gone.... replaced by the overwhelming wet leather taste, that is sour and bland......

I don't know how anything from this brand could be good.

What a way to start out the day. I gotta be honest, after dog rocket #6 I wanted to tap out, admit defeat, wave the white flag and throw the rest of these..."Cigars" into the toilet where they came from. But I will finish what I started, for Silound and the members of CA. Yeah yeah, I'm a helluva guy, I know. :D

Dog Rocket #7

From Silound's description: They smell Honduran, but I don’t know what the frick they are, or where the frick I got them. I think that sums these up nicely.

My take: A lancero-sized cigar, not a bad looking stick honestly. The wrapper has a faint floral smell. It has some weight for such a thin cigar, and I soon found out why. This cigar is rolled tighter than a _________(insert witty comparison).

I stuck the DrawPoker about halfway through, being careful not to burst the cigar. It worked pretty well. Pre-light draw is a tangy, grassy flavor but surprisingly not unpleasant.

First few draws are bland but not bad. The aroma coming from the foot is kinda like a cigarette smell though. Silound says he think these are Honduran, but they have a distinct Mexican flavor to me, especially in the nose exhale. So far, at about 1", this cigar is not bad at all. Not something I would buy, but not what I would call a dog rocket either.

Dammit...I knew I spoke too soon and jinxed myself. Around 2" in and this cigar is getting a very strange flavor, like burning paper. The aroma coming from the foot is still very cigarette-like.

WOW...just out of curiousity I flame purged this cigar, and I swear I was blowing fire out the end of the stick for 10 seconds! :r

It didn't help the flavor. :(

Still has that weird burning paper flavor, with an aftertaste of bleach. Like when you do your laundry at a laundromat and you can smell/taste the bleach in the air. Blech.

The draw is still tight, so it's hard to get a good amount of smoke. But that's quite OK, I don't really want a good amount of smoke.

MAN this thing tastes like paper. Like taking a sheet of notebook paper and rolling up cigarette tobacco in it and smoking it. And the bleach aftertaste is getting stronger.

OK...about halfway. Now this thing is tasting like burning plastic. I stick the DrawPoker through as far as I can so I can get at least 1 really big draw off this nasty thing.

OMG that was a bad idea. :pu

I was really gonna try to nub this thing, but I can't do it. Pitched it with about 3" left. It wasn't quite as bad as dog rocket #6, but pretty close.

This was one of those weird "trick" cigars. The first bit isn't bad, and tricks you into continuing to smoke it. Then BAM!!! Pure yuck.

DOG ROCKET #8

From Silound's description: Unknown in brand and origin, these were a “gift” from a well meaning friend who brought them back from Mexico. I refused to smoke any after his last gift, and I still do.

My take: A corona sized cigar, lots of prominent veins in the wrapper. Wrapper has a baby powder sort of smell. Pre-light draw tastes like hay. The cigar was obviously rolled pretty well. That's what has tripped me out so much about all these dog rockets -- how well they are rolled. I am reminded of that old saying, "You can't polish a turd."

First few draws are plain tobacco with a buttery finish. The aroma coming from the foot is a strong CIGAR smell, not unpleasant. After the first few draws, a floral flavor is creeping in. The nose exhale is strong but not too harsh. So far this cigar is not bad at all. <---With that sentence, I am sure I just jinxed myself. :(

About 1" in...I knew it, dammit. Another one of those "trick" cigars! Tastes like wet burning cardboard now. It still smells OK, but the flavor took a nosedive.

UGH.....BLECH!!!!!!! :pu Just took a really big draw and was smacked in the face with a disgusting flavor that I can only describe as burning cardboard that was soaked in spoiled milk.

This cigar leaves a NASTY bitter aftertaste on my tongue.

no real aroma from the stick, faint grass on the predraw

draw is pretty tight, has ok flavors, light spice with a sweet kint on the finish.

tastes like dry tobacco...little pepper replaced the spice though, still tight as heck... it's not a terrible cigar... though the draw is making it a bitz....

I smoked it about half way through when my jaw started to hurt. I might smoke one again if given to me, though would rather now. If the draw was better it might be a different story.

no. 13

This thing looks to have delevoped a box press look. It's tigher than a **** anyways, I cut it and was surprised by the draw, it's actually quite looose, almost too loose. I'm getting a black pepper in the back of my throat though on the predraw... kind of scarry.. Cap has a crack in it...so I have to spit tobacco...

lighting up I a mouth full of musty/moldy flavor and a cup full of pepper. This is quite terrible... a ton of smoke...

I'm starting to get sick and it's only an half inch into the cigar....

I tuffed it out for another inch and I have developed a headache. My mouth is burning with pepper with a moldy food flavor. Please save these only for those you hate. I tossed the stick at roughly 2 inches smoked. I'm sorry but it's just that bad.

Smells like dry tobacco. Tastes like dry hay and a little spoiled.

As the cigar approaches 1.5 inches it's developing a dusty flavor... Ok so I decided to drink a coke with this... it's improving the flavor. Something of dust, very dry hay and I guess you can call it sour. Something that makes your face scrunch up and go YUCK! There is a spice after effect ,and strange, only while drawing, when the smoke hits your tongue it's almost a pleasant flavor, then it's quickly overshadowed with the nastness that makes you want to bite off the tip of your tongue so your death will come quickly.

This cigar is an occidental reserve, whatever the hell that is... it should be accidental reserve... because it's bad.... My thought is some company made this to see how it was, it sucked, so they sold them to stores as a "house brand"

You have worse in that bundle, though this deserves to be with them.

Band says 777, I believe it says By. Jesus Fuego on there... so it's gotta be good.

It's a black cigar, smells great, a sweet tobacco smell. Prelight draw there is a faint taste of tobacco and black liccorice taste.

Lighting it up, it's not bad...spicy, and a bitter taste, tons of smoke, and a unpleasant heartburn flavor after.

This continued until my throat is feeling like I just drank a bottle of hot sauce....
I had to put this stick down half way..I need ice cream to put this fire out.

Aww man, I'm way behind. OK...

I did smoke #9 last weekend. I was waiting for HK3 to email me the pics but oh well.

#9 was honestly not a bad smoke. Mild, decent flavor, didn't smell like burning garbage. I would not consider Dog Rocket #9 to be a dog rocket.

Dog Rocket #10

From Silound's description: Ok, another “no-clue” bundle. Something from Cigar Connection in Florida that costs $11 a bundle….4 years ago. 4 years has done nothing but improve these cigars….improve how badly they taste.

My take: A toro sized cigar, deep brown wrapper with a few spots but not a bad looking stick. Well rolled too. Pre-light draw is faint hay and tobacco.

First few draws are sweet and woody. Not bad, BUT I am not getting my hopes up. The cigar is heavy and has a perfect draw.

About 2" in and this cigar is not bad so far. On the mild side, a bit of spice and a woodsy flavor. The aroma coming from the foot is nice.

About halfway through and doing fine. The dominant flavor is still woodsy but with an earthy finish. If I had to guess I would say that this cigar is Honduran. The burn is a little crooked but not bad.

Man, I nubbed this thing. Not a dog rocket by a long shot IMO. :ss

Dog Rocket #11

From Silound's description: Another “your guess is as good as mine” cigar.

My take: A churchill sized cigar with what appears to be a Connecticut wrapper. Heavy in the hand and well rolled. Pre-light draw is faint tobacco and hay. Draw is perfect.

First few draws were NOT good. :( A stale, mildewy flavor. Dammit, why did this cigar have to be so big? This is at least 1 hour of punishment.

As I typed that last sentence, the flavor improved somewhat. Settled into a typical cheap Connecticut wrap bundle cigar flavor. I LOVE mild Connecticut wrap cigars, but this one so far is almost too mild. This cigar reminds me of several Finck Cigar house brands, really mild, not good and not bad but definitely not worth buying again.

About 1" in, same story. Super mild with only a tiny bit of flavor in the nose exhale. Not a bad cigar so to speak. I guess NO flavor is better than BAD flavor! :r

About 2" in....same old same old. This would be a good cigar for a girl, or someone who has never smoked a cigar before. This thing is milder than a Macanudo.

About halfway....WOW this cigar is BORING. And this coming from a guy who loves mild cigars! Smoking this thing is like smoking warm air. It does smell good though. :)

With about 2" left, I gotta toss this cigar. I'm afraid I will fall asleep while smoking it and start a fire.

Conclusion: Not a dog rocket only because it had NO flavor.

The aroma coming from the foot is AWFUL. Like burning urine. Like if you peed on a grill or something.

About 1" in, and the flavor has changed to match the aroma. Scorched urine. Imagine peeing on a restaurant-style flat grill and breathing and tasting the smoke from your burning pee. . . .

Like picking up a dead rat, lighting its face, and puffing on its butthole. . .

well I smoked the last one.. WOOT!!!
no. 16

This cigar was a bigger RG maybe 52-54.

It has no real aroma to it, tastes like a summer dry grass. Light it up, and it's not bad. Average or slightly less than on the dan scale. I don't care for it, though I'll smoke it. I can see newbies buying these, I'd wager they sell for 3-5 a stick at a B&M.

As the cigar burns down, I start to have smoke issues, it started off with a load of smoke, but then wittled down to just a little, maybe 1/4 to what it was. There are no burn issues, not much flavor, just a light tobacco flavor, barely leathery. The void of other flavors is disturbing, comforting, and yet what I expected. At least I don't taste crap, or something else nasty.

Cigar got down to about 1/3 left and really hasn't changed much. I was hoping this last one would be a final hurah! But there's nothing of note that I can say than it's just a blah cigar. Something you might smoke if you don't care if you throw it out or if it gets wet...ie smoking in the rain.

Dude...

I'm so happy to be done with this. I don't have to open my humi anymore and feal for my life. There's nothing to keep me from opening up the humi anymore... I'd deliberatly avoid opening it to see what was inside.

OK, here we go.

Dog Rocket #12

From Silound's description: Cuvee Blanc from the DR. Biggest disappointment ever to me, because I’ve had a decent Cuvee in the past. Worst branded cigar I’ve had in ages.

My take: A big solomon-sized cigar with what appears to be a Connecticut wrapper. A nice looking cigar, really, though I am more of a "traditionalist" when it comes to cigar shapes. I tend to pass on the funny looking cigars. :D Pre-light draw is leather and tobacco.

First few draws are not bad at all. Fairly typical flavor for a mild Connecticut wrap cigar.

One of the reasons I pass on funny shaped cigars is that from my experience they are more prone to burn problems, and this one is no different. Burning crooked right from the start. The wrapper is splitting ahead of the burn too.

Out of curiousity I looked up this line of cigars, specifically this cigar, and found that it sells for around $11 per stick. If I pay that much money for something I'm going to light on fire, it had better perform flawlessly, and the Cuvee Blanc Salomon gets a big FAIL. The wrapper has now fully exploded, so much that the binder is bulging out. Surprisingly though the burn is no longer crooked! :tu

About 2" in....flavor-wise, a big "meh". I've smoked Dominican bundle cigars that tasted better than this. Flavor is mild and kinda flat. Whoever came up with this blend should be ashamed of themselves. It's pretty hard to f**k up a mild Connecticut wrap cigar, but the Cuvee Blanc manages to do it. I can think of at least a dozen cigars that offer a similar but better flavor profile at a fraction of the price of this stogie-log. Rather than spending $11 on this big air stick I could buy 5 Flor de Oliva Golds and they are a better cigar! :r

Holy crap! While I was talking smack, the burn line passed the huge split and now the cigar is looking and burning normally. Too bad it didn't improve the flavor. Still not much flavor, no depth or dimension, just warm smoke and a teeny bit of nuttiness in the nose exhale.

A little more than halfway through, the cigar picks up a little flavor. A flavor of burning paper! :D Wow, I can't believe how quickly this thing turned from flavorless to awful. Burning paper in the nose exhale with a finish of BITTER. It is leaving a bitter aftertaste. Yuck! I will try a flame purge.

WOW...usually a flame purge will get rid of some bitterness and sometimes improve the flavor of a cigar. It had the OPPOSITE effect on this one. Now it tastes worse! :( This cigar is a joke.

I made it down to about 2" before tapping out.

Conclusion: Dog Rocket for sure. If I shelled out $11 for this, it would make me want to poop in a box, put the cigar band on the turd, and send it to the manufacturer.

Dog Rocket #13 Woohoo! I'm in the home stretch! :D

From Silound's description: Bahia Seconds. Something I found at the B&M and bought foolishly thinking they would age to be something decent.

My take: A box-pressed robusto sized cigar with an ugly wrapper covered with blemishes. OK, this cigar STINKS. It smells like an old pair of boots that was left in a mildewy basement for 10 years. Pre-light draw is OMFG NASTY. Imagine picking up said pair of mildewy boots and sucking on them.

While toasting the foot I can already tell I am in for some punishment. This thing is throwing off the most awful stench.

First few draws are OMFG NASTY. This is, without a doubt, the WORST of the bunch so far. I literally almost gagged on the first draw. I'm NOT exaggerating. :(

I just realized that this is the first Bahia cigar I've ever smoked.

Words cannot describe how awful this cigar tastes. It doesn't even taste like tobacco. It's a sort of sour mildewy leather taste. The aroma coming from the foot is a familiar one. I smelled it in another one of Silound's "cigars"; the aroma of scorched urine.

Burn and draw are perfect. :tu

I would not even give one of these cigars to someone I don't like. That's how bad it is. Not even a bum would smoke one of these.

I made it about 1.5". I surrender. I can't do it. What a disgusting....thing. I can't even call it a cigar. A strawberry blunt would taste better than this thing. I'm going to snuff this thing out in water and tear it apart to see if I find any rubber bands or human hair in it.

Conclusion: Dog Rocket. The worst of the bunch so far. :pu

Dog Rocket #14

From Silound's description: Occidental Reserve. These aren’t exactly dog rockets, but they’re far from my list of good smokes.

My take: A robusto sized cigar with a decent looking Connecticut wrapper. This line of cigars seems to be fairly popluar. I've seen them at many a B&M and often see them on C-Bid. I've tried the Maduro wrap version of this cigar and did NOT like it.

Pre-light draw is a VERY strong hay flavor.

First few draws are quite grassy with a sour aftertaste. Not good. :(

At about 1/2" the flavor is a little less objectionable but still not good at all. If I had bought this cigar I would have tossed it by now.

At around 1"...man this cigar is not good. It's not the worst cigar I've ever tried by a long shot, but it just doesn't taste and smell good. Still a strong hay flavor on the draw, woodsy through the nose, with a finish kinda like rancid butter. It is cigars like this one that make people shy away from low priced bundle cigars.

About halfway...about the same. I will get 1 or 2 draws that are not bad then a few sour ones. Finish is still sour and the aftertaste is quite bitter.

Smoked it to about 2" and tossed it.

Conclusion: I totally agree with Silound's description. Not exactly a dog rocket, but far from a good cigar.

I'd like to summarize this experience for you...

After smoking all of these dog rockets labeled as such by Silound, I really have tasted something that is bad. I went into this with an honest opinion, I thought our friend would fake us out by putting some good sticks in here, so I gave each one a fair shot before reading what it was. I know there is power to the band. I've tested this myself with cremosa's.... The same people who have tried them when I brought them to various herfs who said they were nasty, when it was banded as a punch black prince cuban said it was good. I try to be non biased and let the flavor be the judge.

In the case of these cigars I found a few that to me might be worth smoking again. The majority wouldn't. Mostly it was the harshness and common flavor that left just a bad taste in your mouth. Most commonly a sour flavor that you would get from food products that are well past their prime. It was an experience I think everyone should have, maybe not to such the degree it was taken here, though it does help to give perspective. Hell I smoke backwoods and I admit it. Not all the time, but I have a pack in my truck just in case. It's not a great smoke but it's not terrible either. Anyways going back to these cigars.

When you smoke something that is bad, you are giving it an honest shot you will notice the foul flavor on your palette, it's just something that does not agree with you. The old saying "Smoke what you like" is totally true. Borndead had found a few cigars he enjoyed, some of those I thought were just as bad as most of these, and visa versa. Take away knowing that not all dog rockets are bad, the taste is in the mouth and nose of the beholder. Remember the nose exhale, it bring flavors to what would be a crap cigar otherwise. And try not to let others influence your decision if something is good or not. For you a 99 cent Garcia Vega might taste as good as a 99 dollar dunhill.

Silound (http://www.cigarasylum.com/vb/member.php?u=1048) I want that number 17 dog rocket you promised lol.

03-27-2009, 08:33 AM
My final thoughts/ramblings/emotional outbursts:

I know this sounds cheesy, but I think I have a truly refined palate. What I mean by that is when I smoke a cigar, I smoke THE CIGAR. Not the ratings, the band, the hype, the name, the price, etc.

If you offered me a La Floridita and a La Flor Dominicana, I would smoke the La Floridita because I like the flavor more than LFDs.

I love both CCs and NCs. I couldn't imagine smoking only 1 or the other.

When I finally got to smoke an Oliva V maduro I was disappointed.

I wouldn't buy Padron 80th even if they were $10 a stick.

With that in mind, the vast majority of Silound's..."cigars" were indeed what I would consider dog rockets. One odd thing though -- most of them were very well constructed. I found it strange. Like getting a $1,000 paint job on a Ford Pinto.

Many of the cigars had a flavor that I have come to recognize as poor quality tobacco. Some, like the Occidental Reserve, were just lousy blends. Makes me wonder why anyone would put so much time, effort, money into making so many BAD cigars. Yeah, yeah, taste is subjective, but in the case of some of these cigars an argument could be made against that idea. Whenever I smoke a truly nasty cigar, it makes me wonder:

Is there no Quality Control in these cigar factories?

How do the farmers/rollers/factory owners smoke these cigars and determine they are good enough for anything other than compost?

Are there infamous "dog rocket factories" that produce nothing but crap sticks like Cremosas, Thompson brands, etc.?

I dunno man...I dunno. Cigars never cease to amaze me.

No one can tell me what is a good cigar--for me. I am the
only judge. People who claim to know say that I smoke the worst
cigars in the world. They bring their own cigars when they come
to my house. They betray an unmanly terror when I offer them
a cigar; they tell lies and hurry away to meet engagements
which they have not made when they are threatened with the
hospitalities of my box. Now then, observe what superstition,
assisted by a man's reputation, can do. I was to have twelve
personal friends to supper one night. One of them was as
notorious for costly and elegant cigars as I was for cheap and
devilish ones. I called at his house and when no one was looking
borrowed a double handful of his very choicest; cigars which cost
him forty cents apiece and bore red-and-gold labels in sign of
their nobility. I removed the labels and put the cigars into a
box with my favorite brand on it--a brand which those people all
knew, and which cowed them as men are cowed by an epidemic. They
took these cigars when offered at the end of the supper, and lit
them and sternly struggled with them--in dreary silence, for
hilarity died when the fell brand came into view and started
around--but their fortitude held for a short time only; then they
made excuses and filed out, treading on one another's heels with
indecent eagerness; and in the morning when I went out to observe
results the cigars lay all between the front door and the gate.
All except one--that one lay in the plate of the man from whom I
had cabbaged the lot. One or two whiffs was all he could stand.
He told me afterward that some day I would get shot for giving
people that kind of cigars to smoke.

Am I certain of my own standard? Perfectly; yes, absolutely
--unless somebody fools me by putting my brand on some other kind
of cigar; for no doubt I am like the rest, and know my cigar by
the brand instead of by the flavor.

A bump from the depths for a serious question...

Did the victims...errrrr...challengers ever get their "prize"? I'm curious to know what they got for their pain (and our enjoyment)...

I never heard what kind of prize they wanted. My original idea was a box of Imperials I've had sitting for a long time.

Mark, Dan; either of you have a particular request? :)

If I don't hear from you guys by the end of the month, I'm sending those Imperials.

Edit to add, I found out the Occidental Reserve is a Davidoff blend! Jeesh....

I told you, sucka! The only thing that will make up for that torture is a Cuban Cohiba. :fu

It's cool though. It was fun writing the reviews. Smoking the cigars? Eh, not so much.

Ok, I just got a few more in, so I'll tag that into your package.

Gonna try and get them shipped out asap, provided I can get some free time. :)

I really don't know what all the unbanded ones were. If I knew what it was, I said so in my description :)

I have been somewhat remiss about sending off some prizes. I'm just being a slowass about getting around to it, sorry guys :( Matter of fact, I've been rather remiss about getting anything important done lately.

Ok, I'm like 4 months late getting some prizes together. Time to spend some time working on that tonight.

This was over a year ago too.. Probably time for Dog Rocket Challenge II. ;)

Too bad I recognized my thompson brands as trash and promptly pitched them into the trash can. I could have contributed. :D
