I have the opportunity to purchase a Shopsmith Mark V and I wanted to know if anyone here has one or knows anything about them.

Here is the one I'm looking at getting.

There is one of these in my father in laws shop. Haven't had the pleasure of playing with it yet so no help whatsoever there.

My dad has the same thing, but hasn't done much with it in years. It is a pretty slick piece of equipment with all the add on pieces that you can mount to it. Right there you already have a table saw, drill press, lathe and disc sander.

If your space is limited and you don't mind the multiple set-ups required, it's alright. The drawbacks are if the power unit goes out, you've got 5 dead tools. I always thought I wanted one of these back in the day, but if you've got the space, separate tools are the way to go.

I have been looking to get one of these but I realized that the use of the table saw would mean the unit would need to be in the middle of the room.
now moving a table saw every time you need it is not too bad but this thing looks heavy and awkward and the price varies a lot per attachments.
I think I will go with separate parts unless I can find one of these loaded with all attachments for 400-500 not 800-1000 that I have seen it go for

The one I'm looking at has an asking price of $650 but I'm pretty sure I can get it for less. I really wish I had the room for all separate tools, but I just don't.

If you have limited space, then this may be the best for you. I agree with 14holestogie. It would drive me crazy if I had to break it down constantly to use all the tools. Plus, I'd have zero use for that table saw since I'm always cutting 4x8 sheets.
