I hate to call this a diet because most people who follow it make lifestyle changes other than what they eat, but does anyone else follow a paleo lifestyle? I saw a couple guys mention in the Crossfit thread that they eat paleo, anyone else?

I am following it as best I can down here. I do not have access to the best foods as we do not have the best robust NEX. I started after getting The Gout and doing some diet research. I am working my way into the lifestyle part slowly as I fell off that wagon a long time ago and are starting to climb back on slowly.

Keep me updated Adam. I know your resources are limited, but I think a reduction in gluten should help with your inflammation.

I guess I should tell you about my situation. I started Paleo last year sometime in early summer, and was seeing some weight loss. Kept up with it until our beach vacation which was a week of hoagies, pizza and beer, and the week after we came home I felt horrible. Paleo took a back seat I started working out and eating sensibly in moderation, but by Christmas my weight was 245.
In January I decided I was going paleo hardcore. I buttoned up my diet, and without working out I lost 30 lbs the first 3 months, which was fantastic but I also wasn't getting heart burn every day like I used to, the inflammation I had in my L4, L5 & L5,S1 discs went away, and my wife could finally take the can of air freshener out of the bedroom since my GI issues were now a non issue. At this point I am knocking at the door on 200 (202 this morning), which is less than I weighted when I graduated High school 11 years ago.

Derrick, after coming back to read a few comments in this thread can you please I've a few links and/or describe what this Paleo thing is? I know there is google, but who wants to scour the web sifting through heaps of information for kernels of truth when it appears that you are doing something that seems to work for you. Besides, this thread title does suggest a description is in order. Please?

Which coconut oil have you tried and with what? Thee are so many different grades and concentrations of flavor for coconut oil that completely dismissing it altogether is akin to dismissing milk because you tried raw milk, but never tried non-fat or whole milk. I'm not saying you haven't tied more than one "kind," but there is no information leading me to believe you have. Also, coconut oil has a very low smoking point, IIRC, so it can easily change flavor and aroma if overheated.

Not sure which ones. I know that she has tried several and I can taste or smell them everytime. She has learned not to "surprise" me anymore as she does not like to be the cause of my puking. If she does use them she uses them when I am not around and in food that is marked so I won't eat it. She has learned to air out the house after cooking with it...

Well then. I would ask about the smoking point, etc., but I assume that you are far more qualified than I on matters of chemical reactions. So, I guess it's just to each his own. If you get an adverse effect from the stuff then it simply is what it is.

Did the Paleo thing for prep for a half marathon back in 2009 and lost 45 lbs in 6 mos. Of course I was running 6 to 10 miles a day at the time as well, but the energy levels on this diet are huge if you're training for a race or any other physical activity. Highly recommended.

I do Paleo all week and try to stay pretty tight with it on the weekends. I feel much better when I'm on it, only wish it was a little easier to follow. The only advice I can give is to always prep food ahead of time and make side you have options to eat when your out.

Cooking in batches helps a lot. On the weekend we cook for the lunches the next week. Frozen veggiies can help a lot too. I eat half a bag of broccoli almost every day at work. It does take some planning and forethought, but for me the inconvienience is worth it. What i was doing before certainly wasn't working.

My mother and father-in-law follow the Paleo diet. They love it. We joke that my mother-in-law only picked "this" diet because alcohol is permitted. That sounds like my kind of lifestyle!
I'm looking to make a lifestyle change and I think maybe I'll borrow the book. It makes sense to me that our bodies work better when eating like the cave man.

I'd heard about the Paleo diet but hadn't really given it much thought. I've already been doing a lower carb diet to control my blood sugar, so this could be the next step in the progression. Although giving up cheese would make it really difficult. Bread/rice/pasta I can do without. Give me a hunk of stinky talleggio melted over a grilled hamburger any day. :dr
Commander Quan

Cheese is one of the foods that are on the fence. Technically dairy is not paleo since Hunter Gatherers were not out milking mastodons, and a lot of people do loose the enzymes to properly digest dairy after about 4 years old, but others can eat it and not have issues. I've cut out most dairy just from not eating cereal and ice cream, but I will still eat cheese. I've started cold smoking my own cheese recently, and will have a couple pieces once a week or so, or have a slice on a hamburger patty when I grill them. I've also started eating berries with mascarpone and a dash of heavy whipping cream as a dessert one or two evenings a week.
Chainsaw13
07-25-2012, 11:18 AM
The only dairy I eat is greek yogurt for breakfast and the occassional bit of cheese. So not like i"m eating a lot of it. Never had the stomach for milk. Ice cream was always a treat thing anyway for me, so having really given it up the last year or so wasn't a big deal.
Found this on FB today. Now this sounds good. I will be making one soon.

Concerning Paleo diet, it sounds similar to a low-carb high-protien diet like Atkins, minus the cheese. That "pizza" looks good. I might try something similar in the future. I've lost weight using low carb diets and kept it off for a long time but it's difficult when my wife makes most of my dinners and isn't on the same page.

Atkins and Paleo are similar. The main difference is that Atkins limits the amounts of fruits and vegetables you should eat where with paleo vegetables should be a major part of what you eat. The other difference is that with Atkins there is no attention paid to the quality of food that you eat, where with paleo it should be minimally processed. If you can't tell if it came from a plant or animal you probably shouldn't eat it. The Atkins group as a line of protein bars and bottled beverages, paleo has that too they're chicken legs and filtered water.

I should also point out that a lot of people take this a step further than just what they eat. People actually make changes to turn this into a lifestyle, things like proper sun exposure, physical activity and they way they workout, adequate sleep and the quality of the sleep. I do try to incorporate most of these into my lifestyle, I've asked my wife for an atlatl for my lat two birthdays and Christmases but no dice. I haven't gone as far as getting one of these (http://squattypotty.com/)

That link is hilarious. I'm 6'6" so my legs are at that angle on normal toilets unless I'm on a handi-crapper. My step-sis and BIL (6'4" & 6'5") have one, it sits about 4 inches taller than normal.
I understand where you're going with Paleo being a lifestyle and the difference in food quality. When eating low-carb/Atkins I do incorporate vegetables, primarily green veggies, but I have to be selective. I can see how a Paleo lifestyle would be a vast improvement for most people. BTW, I love the idea of gettign an atlatl. I wonder if it'd be legal to hunt with one????

I haven't got a chance to see this all of this yet, but at the end a group of them did take down an elk with atlatls. There was a specialist of some sort on the show that said to his knowledge that elk was the largest animal taken with an atlatl in modern times.

Well!!!
This is an example of items founds in a high fat diet - I don't recommend this as the sole source of foods but with the addition of eggs, dairy, vegetables & cold water fish (sardines, mackerel, herring or salmon) - it would be much closer to ideal....
Other than dairy which is questionable for the reasons I posted above, at the addition of quality meats, that is what you eat.

2012 was a great year for me. Eating this way has pretty much become my lifestyle. For the month of January the wife and I are doing a program called Whole 30 which is basically a strict version of Paleo, and is meant to be sort of a reset for your body. I did go a little loose in December, and it feels good to get back on that wagon.

The Paleo Solution is a good book to explain not just the how, buy the why of eating this way, and how environmental factors effect people. Robb Wolf's writing is not dry by any means, and he's a proponent of tequila, so what's not to like.

Bread is a tough one for a lot of people since it seams like everything is eaten with it. Burgers can be eaten without, Lettuce leafs can be used to wrap up a lot of things normally eaten in a sandwich, but mostly it's about changing the way you think about food. Bread has a Glycemic Index of between 64 & 87 and even Whole Wheat bread has a GI average of 71, compare that with a Coke which has a GI of 63. If you eat toast, or a bagel for breakfast, a sandwich for lunch and a side of bread for supper, along with whatever other grain based products you eat during the day your blood sugar is constantly peaking, and then crashing once the insulin rushes in to counter the effects.

Yes and no. What Dr. Atkins knew was that controling insulin is the key to weight loss and many other health factors. The difference is that Atkins does not take into account the quality of the foods. Hotdogs and lunch meats which are ok for Atkins are not paleo. I am not sure what the upper limit of the carbs allowed on Atkins is, but many paleo people are eating 150 grams of carbohydrates from non grain and sugar sources and maintaining just fine. 150 grams from no grains and no sugar is a lot of fruits, vegetables, and sweet potatoes, which should be a large portion of the calories consumed. The rest of the calories needed need to come from somewhere so fats and protines make up the rest of the diet. Fats when well sourced are not the evil artery clogging scourge we have been told. Fats are more than their 9 calories/gram, they are dense energy sources which provide nutrients and vitimans which are more bio available than from grain or legume sources.

Earl that's the first time I've seen that site. I enjoyed it thanks.
I agree that having a partner that's not into paleo can be frustrating. For a long time, my wife pushed back at me when I would encourage her to consider making some dietary changes instead opting for the "everything in moderation[ish]" approach, so I let it go. She however was a huge part of me have success since she does most of the cooking in the house, and enjoys doing it. I'd find recipes, and ask her to make them for me for my lunches and had no issues doing that. Our situation is unique in that she works 9-5 and I work from whenever until 9 pm. So except for weekends, we hardly ever eat meals together.
After a while, and seeing positive results from me she did start warming up to the idea, and even did the Whole 30 plan with me for the month of January. which was a huge step for her, and has actually enjoyed it, and commented on how much better she feels.
It's frustrating when someone sticks their fingers in their ears, but do the best you can and maybe some of the changes will rub off on her.
As far as the will power issue, make positive changes incrementally, I can almost promise you that if candy and doughnuts don't get eaten, eventually they will quit being bought.

Easy bacon chicken bowl
Ingredients
• 1/2 Sweet potato, cut lengthwise
• 1 Chicken thigh
• 2 Slices bacon
• Sea salt and pepper to taste
Directions
1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
2. Place your halved sweet potato cut side down on a baking sheet and bake for 20-25 minutes or until your potato is soft to the touch.
3. When your potato is 6-8 minutes left to cook, place a medium skillet over medium heat.
4. Add your two slices of bacon.
5. Salt and pepper both sides of the chicken thigh.
6. As soon as some of the fat begins to render, push the bacon to one side and place your chicken thigh into the bacon fat.
7. Cook chicken and bacon on one side for about 4-5 minutes, then flip.
8. Your bacon will cook faster so once it is done place your sweet potato in a bowl and top it with bacon.
9. To finish the chicken thigh through, add a tablespoon of water and cover for about 3-5 minutes or until cooked through.
10. Add chicken thigh to your bowl.
11. Cut it all up and mix together.
12. Top with a pinch of salt and pepper.

I am in a similiar -- but reversed -- situation. I like my bread/pasta/potatoes while my wife can mostly do without.
However, I have cut way, way back. We don't often have bread, pasta and potatos around anymore, but once a month or so we will get a small amout of some really good bread or fresh pasta or a nice potato for baking. My wife will pass on the pasta, but she might have a little potato and she will definitely have some of the bread.
So, most of the time she is strict Paleo but once in a while she has non-Paleo foods. I mostly follow Paleo -- and we are both doing OK and happy with the way things are going.

I went for my annual physical last week, and got the results back from my blood panel. Individually all the numbers were good, more importantly the ratios were stellar
Your Total Cholesterol/HDL ratio is: 3.46 - (preferably under 5.0, ideally under 3.5) IDEAL
Your HDL/LDL ratio is: 0.452 - (preferably over 0.3, ideally over 0.4) IDEAL
Your triglycerides/HDL ratio is: 1.250 - (preferably under 4, ideally under 2) IDEAL
Compared to a couple years ago before I started Paleo which looked like this
Your Total Cholesterol/HDL ratio is: 4.64 - (preferably under 5.0, ideally under 3.5) GOOD
Your HDL/LDL ratio is: 0.427 - (preferably over 0.3, ideally over 0.4) IDEAL
Your triglycerides/HDL ratio is: 6.477 - (preferably under 4, ideally under 2) VERY HIGH RISK
So this morning to celebrate I ate 7 pieces of bacon instead of 4.
Good to know Derrick. I've heard good things. It's another to see real numbers.

Began Crossfit a few months back and am currently 3 weeks into a "Paleo Challenge" which is to eat Paleo for 1 moth. Been strict on it and have seen some interesting results. Started out at 174# by the end of week 1 I was done to 168#, then down to 164# by the end of week 2, but I had absolutely no energy! I would start a workout and within 2 minutes I would be completely gassed out. After speaking to the trainers I was encouraged to eat more, especially more carbs from sweet potatoes and fruit. Since I started mixing in the sweet potatoes I feel like I have limitless energy in the workouts and have noticed great results. I have actually gained 2# over the past week, but it seems to be muscle. Still haven't started leaning out through the belly area, but I am sticking to this thing for 2 months, as several people have told me that it wasn't until 6-8 weeks that they saw major changes in their bodies.
I actually like eating this way better. My meals are tastier and fairly easy to prepare. I spend one day a week grocery shopping and prepping food for the week. I missed bread like many of the people in this thread and found some great recipes for muffins/pancakes that I eat almost daily.
5 eggs
1 cup sweet potato puree (or banana or apple or pumpkin)
1/2 cup coconut flour
1 tsp baking soda (I know its not Paleo, but it is minimal and gives good texture)
Seasoning to taste (i.e. cinnamon, vanilla, nutmeg, etc.)
Mix it all up real well and put in a muffin tin and bake at 400 for 20 minutes, or pour onto a griddle to make flapjacks
The toughest part of this diet is that you have to plan out your meals and prep food. My meals are better than what I ate before (tonight's dinner was salmon, sweet potato puree and brussel sprouts vs. my normal of Jack in the Box or pasta). My work provides meal for us, but I have to pack my lunches now as our cafeteria usually serves rice and pasta dishes. When they do serve meat it is usually in a sauce with lots of sugar added, so I can't eat any of it.
I am 3 weeks in a feeling good, but not seeing lots of results in the mirror yet. Glad I spoke with several people who have done this before and encouraged me to stick to it for 2 months, otherwise I would have quit already.

Sounds like you're making some pretty good progress to me. I didn't really see any visual progress until about 2.5 months after starting paleo and even then, it took someone saying that it looked like I had lost weight until I saw it. Just keep it up and you'll see the results in no time.

The key, methinks, is to not get too carried away. I still have bread when I have a burger at red Robins. I'll have bread when we travel and stop for lunch at Wendys or McDonalds. I usually take 3 Glucomanan caps b4 eating bread as this helps absorb some of the carbs. I also take an Acarbose tab that slows down the digestion of carbs. But, french fries, potato chips, baked potato, pasta are all pretty much history for me. I got some Japanses noodles that I use i/o pasta. Not nearly as tasty, but they have zero carbs and absorb the sauce pretty much- and are not disgusting to eat.
Many if not most people don't realize that what you need to do is find something you can live with.

I usually have 1 cheat day a week where I just go crazy and eat whatever I want. I feel like crap the next day, but it helps me stay on course for the rest of the week. This past week has pretty much been all cheat days since my birthday was Wednesday and I have family in town. Next week is going to be a "cleansing" so to speak. I'm gonna eat super clean and drink tons of water. I've put on 3 lbs this week with the way that I've been eating.

When I go visit my folks and they take me to the great Italian restaurant I sure better have my usual plate of pasta or else I will be excommunicated! But, having the tab and the caps should mitigate the damage somewhat. I agree with Earl- make it a habit, not an addiction!

Dan what you initially experienced is not uncommon especially if you are working out while making the transition. My wife and I did Whole 30 in January and she had a hard time running the first 2 weeks. Use your activity level to gauge your carb intake. Periods when you are more active you will perform better with 50 or so extra grams than without. Ultimately there is no one solution for everybody but with some self experimentation you can dial in on a sustainable plan that gets you to look, feel, and perform your best.
I did the Whole 30 about 2.5 months ago and it was a lot tougher for my wife then me. I am still doing Paleo for the most part with quite a few cheat days recently.. I need to get back into it more seriously but I have enjoyed it this far for sure. It has definitely helped me loose some weight. My wife found a photo of me from last October and the difference is crazy! I never realized how much I have shed until I saw the photo. Not much to add to the conversation but oh well :D

My wife made these tonight and they were fantastic:
Spicy Salmon Cakes from Quick and Easy Paleo Comfort Foods by Julie and Charles Mayfield
1 lb. canned wild-caught salmon
.25 cup paleo mayonnaise
1 large egg
2 tbsp. finely minced green onions (green and white parts)
2 tsp. Siracha sauce
1 tsp. sesame oil
1 tbsp. EV olive oil (or your favorite cooking oil)
1. Combine all the ingredients except for the 1 tbsp. EVOO in a medium bowl. Form into fish cakes (patties) of equal size. We suggest 2-3 inches in diameter and .5 inches thick.
2. Heat the EVOO in a large frying pan over medium heat. Working in batches, if need be, cook the salmon cakes for about 4-5 minutes per side. Or until golden brown and hot. Alternatively, you can finish these off in a 350 degree oven should you chose for about 8-10 minutes.

Paleo Is great, some say it is too restrictive, but there are thousands or recipes. It keeps me experimenting in the kitchen.

Agreed. Been Paleo for a couple years. Did it to maintain after dropping 50 lbs via shear exercise (Insanity). I've found a million recipes and food choices out there to keep it interesting. In fact, I definitely prefer Paleo food now. I actually find it almost impossible to gain weight when on Paleo. My Dr. analysis has shown great results and I've never felt better. Can't go wrong!
