View Full Version : Official Shack Herf VIII Beer Tasting Thread
stearns

Since we've all been talking about this, I figured we should have a thread designated to it. Last year's beer tasting was a great time, I propose we do it again.
I have no preference as to which afternoon we'll hold it, so anyone who will only be there certain days, speak up.
We can discuss contributions or leave them a secret, doesn't matter, but I'm sure I'm not the only one who's been stashing bottles for the occasion.
so... any interest?
Bummer about it is I have full size souvenir pints for everybody and I ended up making plans NOT to attend the Shack.
Guess I should have cooled my jets on the glasses until it got closer to the time I had to make a decision, the
company that makes em is blazing fast. But I am nothing if not a dumba55. Still looking for a Arkansan, Kansan,
Nashvillian or other to take em up for me. Anyone passing within a few hours of Memphis or hopefully right through it.
Problem is it's extremely out of the way for anyone but ME it seems. MAYBE a Louisianian. But I think I was the closest
thing to a Louisianian ever to attend.
At least i didn't have the ACTUAL Beer-tasting pints made up, that'd have been additional hundred bucks down the tubes,
but they were super bad and created in honor of my cousin from Michigan who wanted to attend with me who is a huge
Charles Bragg fan and the glass art was an homage to Bragg's work attached here below. I made some minor adaptations
like putting a beer pint in the girl's hand and adding the text Shack Herf Beer Tasting 2012.....I am so bummed out.

I'd be down for it. Are you talking home brew, micro brew, or both?
In the past it was microbrews in bottles, we had plenty of home brew, those who wanted to taste it, all weekend.
I know one thing, I had a freaking eye-opening time at the last one. Just epic variety and quality.
stearns
07-17-2012, 07:46 PM
i had micro brew in mind, but of course, everything is up for discussion
I also really loved it for another reason, I got to hang out with a crowd I had been missing for years...Hootie is so busy
usually I never get to sit down and have some drinks and smokes with him, I met Ben a few years ago, and really had time
to chill and drink with him last year. EXCEPT for the heat under that tent that night, it was about the perfect part of the
herf for me last year. Just wow. Kristin also slows down for a few hours for that event, always a treat.

I've got several breweries near me and could bring a few growlers of my choice. Or bottles if that is preferred.

Last year was a great time.
Unfortunately, I will not be able to make it this year either.
I'll make up for it Shack IX. I have a great cellar of a few good beers going now and have been on track with some great homebrew recipes. A modified version of the California Common I brought last year advanced to the finals of the National Homebrew Competition. I'll bring an even further improved version next year!
Have fun brothers!
I am planing on bringing a case of the Cigar City Brewery Maduro Beer for anyone that wants to try it.
Aw hell I might just come down (up) and do it. I imagine DB will set me up on his floor for a night.
Ahaha, I FORGOT about meeting you , too Tim, we were working that corner.

Man, I loved that beer tasting. I brought a couple growlers from one I my local breweries. Love that tasting glass so generously givin by Brad. This year I'm bringing Founders CBS and Rogue brewery's doughnut maple bacon ale. I'm very much looking forward to doing this again even thought last year I kinda stayed quiet in the corner.

I would like to be in this, but my beer knowledge is null & void, I have been thinking about trying other beers, there is a store down the street that has a vast selection of beers I have never had and will let you fill up a 6pack with singles.
I think I will take a pic and let you guys see what I am talking about and see any of these are good to join in the fun.
That's the great thing Mickey, no knowledge is required, the guys that bring the beer have PLENTY of that.
All you need is taste buds and oddly enough, capacity. By the end of it you are getting full and drunk, lol.

I am really liking this idea! I love beer, well some of it.
I PMed Ender to see if he will take delivery of the box if I order some tasting glasses and have them sent to
a shack attendee. So hopefully that minor detail will be attended to. I think people would drink out of cupped
hands to get a sip of some of that stuff.
RHNewfie
07-19-2012, 12:01 PM
There are plenty of folks driving down that could accept a delivery I am sure... but we would all prefer hand delivery from you! Change your mind and get your a$$ up there...
This was a great time last year, I am still telling people about that sour that was tried. I will definitely sit around again this year!
What time did it start last year? Depending on what is brought maybe it should be an earlier start. Not that I contribute to the beers or have an opinion that really matters! LOL!

Everybody who wants to play should be able to find something in their local stores that would be of interest to the rest. I know I wouldn't drink everyone's beer unless I had something to contribute, but that's me.
Jeff, bring that 9% Labatts, that should be fun. :r

That's just gross Tom...
Oh I will bring something, it will just be, uh, not wonderful!
Ok, I thought the concept was to contribute as well
Like Tom said, that IS the general concept, I just forgot that last year I brought the souvenir glasses, lol.
What's that the kid says in Stand By Me? "Hey, I brought the COMB."
But I had no craft beer anyway, I am not a beer drinker, but I was being drawn in to a certain extent.

I'm in a similar boat. I am not a beer drinker; I'm mostly a gin drinker. However, I've come to like the taste of some of the micro brews; not unlike how I've come to enjoy 'sipping rum' on occasion. Is there anything local to Michigan anyone has a hankering for? I'd like to join the tasting but I dont want to come empty handed.
Not sure it is really a sign-up or not, more of a drop-by from what I recall. But I stand to be schooled....
Like Jeff said, no one signed up, we all just talked about it for a few months to help us get through
the time, and then when it was time to do it, Hootie came up to me and said, 'Hey dude, we're having
the Beer Tasting', lol. Might have been Ben, who knows.

brad, i'm more than happy to take delivery of glasses and drive them up there if you need.
last year i didn't even realize it was going on so i did not bring anything exciting. i plan on making up for it this year :tu. just bring a bottle of something you enjoy, i got to try so many things i had never heard of last year, it really helped me form an idea of what i like and don't like in beer. i'll let everyone know now, most of my contributions will be dark, but there's nothing wrong with something a little lighter.
no sign up lists are necessary, we'll do our best to make it known to everybody who enjoys some good brews when it is starting

I agree wholeheartedly! BUT I happily replied and will definitely help out.
I'll be in Minneapolis the week before Shack weekend and hope to include a couple growlers from microbreweries there. At first I didn't think I would because of them not keeping for the few days on the road but then Christos was like "bring a cooler and keep adding ice :sl". Then I was like :hm :fp2. Just a forewarning, they will probably be stouts....mmmm stout:dr
Side note: Went to a beer dinner/tap take over with Christos and Asian Andrew (for those who remember, I'm Canadian Andrew) with Founders brewery tonight. They do have really good beer and would be a welcome addition to the beer tasting if anyone from Michigan can score some of the rare stuff like KBS, CBS, Devil Dancer, Frangelic Mountain Brown. I'm bringing a CBS that Christos and I stood in line 10+ hours for at the brewery. I can't wait to share.

Holy crap. Sounds like we are going to have a ton more people at this year's beer table with a lot more "special beer". I'm so looking forward to this. Perhaps we could showcase certain styles together at different times/days...then again I'm probably just taking it too far and over complicating it. Or maybe I'm afraid of getting too drunk to be able to enjoy/respect the value of each beer.

You have to remember that when it really gets rolling, this tasting, if years past are any indication, is a steamroller
of heavy, crafty, hard to find beers. To clear the palate with ANYTHING that is different from the prevailing trend
is pretty damn refreshing. I like motor oil almost as much as the next guy, but I would appreciate ALL entries that
keep me going longer and to me that is something light and refreshing and quality. LORD my beer nipples are getting
hard. And naturally, I am interested to see if you can participate in all these events and still be standing later. :D

I pray to the beer gods to get some Black Note Stout this winter. I am not paying 100bucks on ebay for something made miles from my house.

Expy needs major time in the bottle. Way to hoppy and roasty fresh. Try an aged bottle, 3-5 years, next to a fresh one. Fresh is bitey, lots of hops. I'd still drink a fresh bottle if it was put in front of me. Sometimes I like a super hoppy and roasty stout. The aged bottle is unreal though, smoooooth dark chocolate, espresso, nuts, leather, tobacco. None of which I see in a fresh bottle:2

If you want motor oil thickness, try Cigar City Hunahpu's Imperial Stout. Makes Bells expy body feel like water.

Ill just bring a 6pack to shack then. I have a sealed case from last year, as you can see.

If I were you, I'd take more than a 6 pack. It's really a good beer and don't forget that most people don't have access to it.

Got some bells exp put away that's 2 and 3 years old. Just sitting and resting. :tu
One day. :D
For me just a lot of three Floyd's stuff. Some fresh some a few years old.
Will be going through the cellar tonight and packing. We'll see what ever else I find.

Oh I am not a fan of motor oil, just saying that we drink a fair share of it during the tasting,
and it is refreshing to occasionally clear the palate with something different. I later read
that the expedition was another stout, so that logic blew away like dust. But some of
what I am bringing is NOT stout. So the opener-meister, usually Hootie, can select the
right bottle for the right round I am confident. More beer nipples just now....Shack Nipples too.

My other additions are not stout either. I totally misread you :sl

No, you read it exactly right, I was just using a cliche' to blather on.
I DO like the interest I get off of one of those thick-a55 beers, but
you can't drink ALL that, ALL night. I was a little wowwed by one of
those ultra-thick beers last year, didn't know they could DO that.
We'll get it done, man, just be standing when its time. No more 'coffee
table' impressions. :D

Nice, Kristin. One of the ones I need to try! Grabbed a few more bottles today, including some pumpkin beers.
When is the official tasting? Saturday?
I picked up a few bottles. I hope someone likes them. See y'all tomorrow.

You guys did an amazing job. From a true Neophytes prospective, there were some damn tasty beers. Think I may go hunting, and see if I can't find some of the easier to find beers.
Wow, I got so hammered one half ounce at a time! I had a great weekend with my fellow
Shackers. I enjoyed every beer except one of the ones I brought which was just awful.
That Cherry item was the bee's knees fo sho. I also loved Kristen's soy sauce and The
Dark Lord from I am guessing Hootie and the CBS from Ben. All the other beers were great
but I just fell down by not pre-tasting that Abita and realizing how awful it was. It could
have also been a bad bottle, but I see people hammering it here and there, so I doubt it.
Beer kept coming from places I never saw it coming. Saturday Stearns made the error
of letting me have some of his various bottles he would open, and we were paired
together in the tourney, and I suck at that game to begin with. LOTS OF MOJITOS, too,
I think we should have a tasting of those next year...."This one tastes just like the last
one....but who cares", lol.

you are mistaken brad, if they were my cbs i would have found a cave somewhere and sipped the whole damn bottle to myself one one ounce pour at a time. it was a couple of the more selfless brothers that contributed those. thank you to everyone for bringing some good bottles, definitely doesn't make my "what should i try to find next" list any easier to tackle

Wow, an amazing beer tasting again. Thank you everyone for letting me sample your beers. My 2012 Dark Lord was amazing after being open for a half hour and warmer. Thanks Hootie for finding it. :tu
Until next year boys!!

Man, I really enjoyed the beer tasting. Great group of people around the table for sure. So, I guess Christos and I will have to camp out again if Founders releases CBS again. We were near the door in a line of 100's. Glad it was enjoyed.
