There have been tons of 'What do you drive?' threads. here is a different spin. Post your car 'trail'. I'll go first

1987 Chevy Astro Van - 1st ride: Mom's hand-me-down
1996 Chevy Silverado - first vehicle I bought
1993 Camaro Z28 - what I bought when I realized I probably couldn't afford the Silverado
2000 Honda Accord Coupe - After the Camaro was totaled
2004 Toyota Tacoma SR5 - After the Accord was totaled (hit by 18 wheeler - I have pics)
2002 Jeep Cherokee - Laid off job and sold the Toyota. Paid cash for this one.
2005 Mazda 3 - After getting a job with a longer commute. This was when gas was really getting expensive
2002 Jeep Wrangler (Current) - When I moved to SA in 2009, I bought from some old folks that towed it behind an RV. 36k miles and got it for a steal.
2010 Ford Fusion (Current) - Company issued
2013 Outback 3.6 Special Appearance Pkg - (On order ETA 7/26) - Sold the Mazda3 and bought this for the wife as we are expecting offspring #1

1979 - Datsun 210 (seriously a step down)
1983 - Dodge Challenger (made by Mitsubishi. nice little car)
1986 - Chevy Cavalier (eh...)
1989 - Ford Taurus ( put about 150,000 on this one before trading it in)
1993 - Ford Aerostar (hated it)
1996? - Ford Contour (also hated it)
1999 - Nissan Quest (nice for a minivan)
2002 - Chrysler Town & Country (loved this van)
2003 - Ford Explorer (daughter still has it)
2004 - Dodge Intrepid (son still has it)
2007 - Dodge Caliber (hate it but love the gas mileage)
2008 - Mazda CX-7 (wife's car but I fight to drive it)

My grandmother had one of those Challengers. Blue with a red and orange pinstripe. Not saying it is a grandma car though. She was probably 42 or so back then.

My dad had a Taurus. Seemed like it was a 1990. Green with tan leather.

1986 Dodge conversion van - girlfriend's fathers HATED the vehicle. Back seat folded down into a bed in about 1.5 seconds :D

1987 Olds Delta 88 - college car

1987 buick skylark - beater car. lasted a month maybe.

1996 Pontiac Grand Am GT - got a dwi in it, cops made me forfeit the car. Lesson learned.

2000 Lincoln LS - current car. Though I'm looking for a replacement now. 172K miles on her so far:

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t228/pektel/IMG_7807.jpg

1985 Chev. 3/4 ton 4wd pickup - garbage hauler/winter beater. Lifted about 6" and then a little taller with 33" tires. Previous ownder spray-painted it camo. I bought it with no exhaust from the transfer case back. Threw on dual exhaust with cherry bombs. Iget more looks from women while driving the truck than I do the Lincoln lol.

1990 Buick LeSabre Custom - Loved this car, collected thousands of dollars in parking tickets when I was in college with this baby. Stopped running one day and my roommates smashed everything on it that was breakable.
1988 Buick LeSabre Custom - Dottie, drove her for 2 years until the brakes exploded and just the parts would have been more than I paid for the car.
2001 Honda Accord - Bought it from my mom after Dottie went to the junkyard in the sky
2002 Toyota Sequioa - Daily driver, 206K miles and never done anything but tires and oil changes. Almost time for a new ride.
2000 Chevy Silverado 1500 - Work/Plow truck for our properties. 203K miles and has two engine rebuilds. Snow plows give trucks AIDS, paid more in repairs than I did for the truck.
2011 Toyota Camry - Wifes car, she loves it.

Fun game

1976 Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce. Not mine (my dad's) but the car I learned to drive in. Really wish we still had it, probably worth some money now.
1988 Jeep Cherokee. Got it from my parents with 120k, gave it back with 180k. Best car I ever had. Went to my stepbrother who put another 30k on it.
1986 Mercedes 190e. Got it from my parents with 240k, gave it back with 285k and they traded it in on a new car for my mom. It was on it's third transmission and second engine. From what I hear it's still running.
2001 Acura CL. Tranny went with 30k on it. Nice car but the motor was too powerful for the transmission.
2001 Jeep Cherokee. Drove this almost all the way across the united states (Philly to Phoenix). Totaled in a very minor accident (according to the insurance) co (bent frame) but I think someone at the body shop wanted it so they trumped it up.
2001 Subaru Outback. Had this until we traded it in on the new Forester. Great car.
2008 Dodge Caliber. Sold this when we went down to one car a few years back.
2012 Subaru Forester. First brand new car that I or my wife have ever had (6 miles on OD when we got it). My wife's daily driver.
1991 Honda Civic EX. My run around city car. Mostly sits but it always starts right up and goes. 3 more years and this baby is a classic!

1987 Dodge Dakota-first one. Saw it in my old home town last time I was there, about 6 months ago. Still had my fraternity sticker I put on it.
1992 Jeep Cherokee. Rolled it after I hit a patch of black ice south of Austin.
1996 Dodge Ram 1500. Drove that until three years ago. Put almost 200K on that thing.
2009 Jeep Liberty. Going to drive that until SWMBO realizes I'll need a truck.

1985 Ford Tempo. I used to take it out when my parents weren't home to teach myself how to drive stick.

1983 Chevrolet S-10. I went through about 4 transmissions in that thing.
1996 Saturn SC1. piece of crap. had it for maybe 6 months.
1999 Ford Ranger. Loved that truck. I had it for about 5 years and then had to sell it when I bought my 4x4 truck.
1991 Ford F-150. Beater truck. bought it for $500 and sold it for $500 about a year later
2004 Ford F-150. Great truck. Love it to death. 4x4, 33inch mud tires, flowmaster exhaust.

Those Cherokees are nearly unbreakable IF you maintain them properly. Transmission fluid every 30k, oil every 3k. Mine was awesome. I wish like hell I never traded it.

As I noted in the lead post for the thread, I just bought my wife a 2013 Outback 3.6R, pretty well loaded out. Never had a Subie, but I understand there is a cult following and most people refuse to drive anything else. I am happy to be in the club....

Yeah, while I loved my first Jeep mostly because it was the first car that was all MINE and I loved my second Jeep...its fairly likely that I will never buy anything but a Subaru again. We got a 2.5x Premium. We drove the Jeep Compass and it wasn't even in the same ballpark as the Forester. I was a little worried about the 4 cyl and power/pickup but it's great. Faster off the line and passing than our old Outback which was the 3.0 H6. The turbo would have been cool but it's another 5 grand and you have to put premium in it, change the oil every 2500 instead of 7500, added maintenance...just made more sense for us. Like I said, it's plenty fast.

Subarus aren't the flashiest cars and don't have the fanciest bells and whistles but the symmetrical AWD system is the best on the market and they are an excellent value at least in the forester and outback lines. I'll take a boxer engine and the SAWD system over any fancy toys out there. Driving a Subaru in the rain is an experience, I've never felt safer on a wet road in any other car.

This is true too. I could get well into an Acura RDX for what I paid. The OB was just better all around for us. Hell, the baby set BARELY fit in the RDX.

I remember when I first got my Impreza in 2010. the first winter I had a chance to see what it would do. We had a good combination of snow and ice. I was out on every road possible...up hills and down hills. I had every light on the dash flashing....anti lock brakes and traction control...ect, and it looked like Christmas in front of my eyes, but the Subaru took it all in stride as if it were July. True, they aren't flashy, but when the going gets tough, they shine. The perfect winter car.

One of my favorite Porsche. They really nailed the design and construction on this model. I was going to buy one off a friend about 5 years ago, but just lost my job and did not want an additional car payment while I was looking for work. In retrospect, I should've bought it as I was out of work just 1.5 months.

1971 Dodge Van - first car, was bought new by parents.
1976 Cadilac Coupe d'Ville - given by grandparents. on its last legs when I got it
1984 Mercury Topaz - brown and matched our golden retriever. another car ready for grave when I got it.
1985 Maserati Biturbo E - mechanic made a lot of money on this one.
1980 Mercedes 300D - check magnet, got laid a lot in this car.
1985 Toyota Celica ST - had for many years. incredibly strong and reliable car.
2002 Subaru WRX Wagon - first new car I ever bought. fun, but kind of soft suspension
2003 Honda S2000 - precision at its best. should have kept it after the lease.
2004 Jaguar XJ8 Vanden Plas - wonderful car, but too big for me. land yacht that got many thumbs up
2007 Jaguar XK Coupe - current car.

How could I forget my 1985 Alfa Romeo GTV6. What a lovely "man's car". No power steering, just about had flame shooting out the back and could wake up a 1/4 mile radius.

Since 1991:

1980 Pontiac Phoenix LJ - SUCKED. Worst car ever, only had it for 4 months. :pu

1983 Chevrolet Celebrity V6 - Man, this was a great car. Like a true GM car, it ran bad longer than most cars will run at all. I lost it when it got towed and it would have cost more than the car was worth to get it back.

1987 Honda CRX DX - Fun little car, unfortunately it was an automatic. And it was before Honda could design an auto transmission that could shift without snapping your neck. Traded for next car on the list.

1991 Mercury Sable LS - Meh. It was loaded, though. My sister totaled it (not her fault).

1987 Chevrolet Sprint - Laugh all you want, I miss this thing. I love bare-bones, honest cars. Its only option was an AM/FM radio. It got more MPG (50) than it had horsepower (48). Clutch went out, and it was traded in.

1981 VW Rabbit LS - Great little car, but only had it 2 months. Brakes failed, so I sold it to a coworker that wanted a project.

1987 Acura Integra LS - This was it, the only lemon Honda ever built. It sucked. I gave it away, heard it died in a demolition derby.

1988 Chevrolet Sprint - This one had A/C and cruise control even. Cruise worked only on flat surfaces, and the A/C couldn't keep up with temps over 80. Unfortunately, it's the only car that ever broke down and left me stranded. Sold to a friend.

1993 Geo Prizm LSi - Great little car, sold it when I bought the next car.

2001 Oldsmobile Alero GL - Better than most people thought. I bought it in December 2001, first time I'd ever had a car the same year as the year I bought it. Sold to my sister who drove it for an additional 125k after the 90k I put on it.

1991 VW Passat GL - It was a beater, but fun. Donated to a relative that needed a car.

2001 Hyundai Accent L - This was made while Hyundai was slowly learning how to build good cars. Weak transmission and clutch. Put 120k on it in a year and a half, then sold it to my stepdad (who is now on his second Hyundai).

1998 Buick LeSabre - Would have been a great car, but it was cursed. Electrical problems, stalling out, trampled by elk, and so on. Traded it for next car.

2005 Dodge Caravan SE - 4 cylinder, so had no power. It was ok, but suffered from the typical Chrysler transmission problems. Traded it for my current vehicle.

2009 Ford Ranger XL - First brand new vehicle I've ever bought (thanks, $4500 rebate!), and I think I have to consider it the best vehicle I've ever owned. Manual everything, rubber floor, 2WD; but it has the upgraded stereo, 40/20/40 split seats, A/C and aux jack for my iPod. What else could you need? And now that I've smoked about a billion cigars in it, it smells great! :D

In '78 a '69 Triumph Spitfire. A completely underdisgned car that was a great mechanics teaching aid.
In '80 a '78 Bronco. I took that places few vehicles could go. Worked on that a lot too.
In '85 I bought a new Toyota 4x4 truck.
In '93 I got an '89 Toy truck to replace the totalled '85. There is no part of a Toyota truck I have not taken apart and put back together.
In '95 I leased a Lincoln Mark VIII for two years.
In '00 a '98 Mark VIII (current)
In '04 an F250 to replace the worn out Toy. Actually, it replaces two Toys and has truck to spare. (current)

Only two cars so far.
1993 Chevrolet Cavalier - Was my first car that I drove all through high school. Had a huge leak in the radiator so I would fill the trunk full of milk gallon jugs filled with water that I would pour in there every time I stopped some place. Picked up a lot of girls with that one :r

1996 Pontiac Sunfire - Bought it for $1000 about 6 years ago and have since put about 70,000 miles on it. The amazing thing? I have NEVER put a single dollar in repairs into it; just tires and oil changes. Has to be the most well-built car in the history of the world. Looks like hell now with 200,000 miles but I love it to death.

I see some Dodge Darts in the mix here. I have a couple interesting (at least to me) stories on the Dodge Dart.

1. My dad had a Dodge Dart (71-72?) for quite a few years. One day, he and mom went out and my brother and I had a babysitter. Our babysitter spent her time yapping on the phone with her boyfriend or messing with truckers on our CB radio. Well, I walked into the garage will the sitter was yapping and the Dodge Dart had started. No keys in the ignition, it just started. I ran in and told the sitter that the car was running and she told me to turn it off then went back to yapping. I told her there were no keys to turn it off and she ignored me. I told her she was useless and went over to the neighbors. Our neighbor Marty was much more responsive. He came right over and saw the car was running. He popped the hood and pulled the coil wire which killed the engine. He and my dad took a look at it the next day and saw that some condensation had arced the solenoid and started the car! It apparently was under recall for this but we never knew because he got it used.

2. My dad retired the Dodge Dart sometime in the mid 70's. He parked it in the back yard where it sat for several years. My cousin was down on his luck in the 80's and was looking for a car so he could get a job. My dad said if he could get the Dart started, it was his. My cousin brought his brother and battery over. They pumped up the tires, poured a little gas into the tank and a little into the carb of the straight 6. They hooked up the battery, and it started on the 2nd or third try! My cousin drove it home, plated it, and drove it for 3 years without issue. I only wish today's engines were that simple and that sturdy!

My wife had a green sunfire. I think hers was a '98.

How did it hold up? I'm continually amazed everytime I get it and it starts right up and runs like a champ after all its seen. Guess thats why you still see so many of them on the road. When I eventually have the funds and get something new I'm just gonna hold on to it as a back up car rather than sell it for the $500 it'd probably get for it. It's worth more to me than that.

I can't even begin to list all the rigs I have had. I am notorious for always having something different. I was asked to list the cars and trucks I have had, I counted 125 (ish) before I quit counting and that was quite a few years ago.

I did lots of horse trading and buy to sale stuff to pay the way back when I had crappy low paying job's.
