Hi everyone. I was wondering if anyone on here could help me with black mold that keeps growing on my set and forget humidifier wicks. I have a large Aristocrat cabinet, and although the humidity remains at a perfect 67%, the wicks keep getting this mold growth. I was wondering if I could remove the wicks, and fill the reservoirs of the units with beads instead of water? Thank you in advance.

I would give Bob Staebell a call and ask his advice. :2

I've always dumped a capful of this in each tank when refilling with distilled:

Bob (I think) recommends replacing the wicks every 3-6 mos or so, no?

Yep. But the mold develops (small spots) after 10 days or so. I dont need to tell anyone here that Bob is a Master Craftsman. My units (3 of them) all hold humidity perfectly, and in style. But I thought a question like this would best be answered on this forum, as the cigar keeper experts reside here. :)

I had that problem once, got a new jug of distilled water and washed out my S&F cans with some Everclear, replaced the wicks.....no problems since.

What happened to me was that I got some "bad" distilled water and once the wicks / cans are "contaminated", you'll keep having problems until you can make a clean start.

Worked for me - YMMV....B.B.S.

I would NOT use that product unless it's rated "food safe". Its chemistry will impinge itself into your sticks over time. That's why I use what I did; it outgases relatively fast, and is safe for human consumption. Relatively speaking....:D
