View Full Version : Which Opus X?

I am looking into bidding on one of these..
Which one should I start off with? I have never had one before.
Perfecxion, Lost City, Reserva D'Chateau, LFMF?
I know it may be hard to offer me one with out me saying what I like... It is hard.. I have a few favorites.. Alec Bradley, RP and Diesel's.. Tops right there.
I am still willing to try any stick, since I am still new at this. From mild to full, from light to dark..

From what I have read you either like Opus X or you don't so. Bid on anyone you think you would like to try and chances are you will like it lol.

1) Peter's advice is solid, just pick one. I've smoked 3 of the 4 vitolas you listed and I don't think it would make much of any difference which one you pick for the first time Opus X smoker.
2) You said "bidding". If you are looking at those cigars on cbid, I'd recommend you start calling around to B&M's before you bid. Opus Xes tend to close at exceptionally high prices. I'd start with Tampa Sweethearts, you might have to purchase a sampler of 6 cigars, 2 Opus Xes, 2 regular Fuentes and 2 of their TS cigars to get them, but you'll be getting the 6 for what the 2 on cbid would cost.

If i had to choose one i liked it would be the lost city but even then i knew it was overpriced and not really worth the hype.

Agreed. When they are in stock locally, I can always get them cheaper than cbid.

Nothing local for me.. I may want to do the sampler deal better.. I will just have to break down and spend some money on these and decide for myself if they are worth the money, to me.

I went to three large B&M's last week all in the same day, I found the very same vitola OPUSX's ranging from 20 to 34 dollars! I also found some tins of three OPUSX's ranging from 55-68.00, the the employee said "they'd been here for a few years". I will get one or more next trip. I could pick something up for you Garryy if you don't have good luck on-line or local to you.

I prefer perfecxion over the D'Chateau. Not sure why.. It seems to have a more well rounded flavor and its easier to draw, so far, of the ones I have smoked.
Try cigars direct too.. they have a lot of different ones in stock. I like the super bellicoso.

I know my B&M stocks them. They keep them in a separate display cabinet near the register. It's pretty much the only "HTF" cigars they have.
If you need prices I can get them for you. Compared to the markup on everything else, I know the Opus X prices (too rich for me tho) were very reasonable the last time I looked at them.

Call Tampa Sweethearts directly. They have various samplers (Lost City, esp.) and they are the most reasonable of all the vendors.

Those prices are double to quadruple the MSRP, if not more.
MSRP on Opus Xes is actually quite reasonable. $10 to $15 on the average, some vitolas are less, a few are more. Special/rare shapes can run higher.
Note, that state taxes are going to be on top of that, so depending on how oppressive your state is they can be significant, but, if you order from out of state you should not be charged it.

Out of curiousity, is there a list of MSRP of the more popular Opus X cigars?

My suggestion was, if you`ve never smoked an Opus,
start with the least ligero sizes, although they are all stronger cigars.
FF, Petite Lancero would be the 2 to start with.

WOW! I had no Idea. Everywhere I have looked online and B&M's have been 15.00 minimum. That was for a perfection#5 also...I bought one...:sad
I have saw them for sale on here too and yet too see one near "MSRP".
The hunt is on.
Maybe a link if anyone find them for msrp and in stock.?

Man, I'd get them online...around $12-14...B&M has them for about the same price too. I would stay away from bid sites on OpusX...they tend to get bid more than their value...try the Power Ranger. If I were you, I'd let it sit...had some outstanding 6-8 year OpusX...as a fresh cigar, I think they're horrible imo...

Wouldn't it be easier to tell someone the definitive place to go for these 10.00 opusx instead of mention one place to start with prices that are comparable to what I have found locally and was told the prices were "double to quadruply" overpriced?
I guess if I knew of the hot deal I would not offer snarkey responses without really having the info to back it.
I offered Garry help the best I could. Wont others do the same?

I did give him an MSRP vendor, way back in post #5. In fact, I was the first person in the thread to post a vendor with better prices.

Here's my hang up...."sweethearts" lowest price is 26.50 per cigar. Where can they be found for 10-15 "on average"?
I found them for 15-22 from one B&M and up to 34 at another, You say my provided prices are "double or quadruple" overpriced. Even with the benefit of doubt half of my low price (excluding the quadruple factor) is 7.50...you can find a retailer for that? Now to the high side...even half of 34.00 is 17.00 and 1/4 (quadruple factor) is what 8.50...can you provide a retailer for that?
the last thing I offered was the tin of three of different vitolas ranging from 55.00 (for three)/18.33 each OR 68.00 (for three)22.66 each
These are also aged from 06.
So I ask again can you provide somewhere for people to purchase opusX cigars (in stock) for the 10-15 "on average" (us dollars I assume your talking).
Please post said link or phone number.
so far the lowest cost offer is what I have offered. feel free to beat the offer all to heck. I would like to purchase more than the lonely one I have.
Garry I do apologize for hijacking your thread just trying to get the best deal for you,me and.....

Very few stores have the regular Opus line now.
Sweethearts only lists the Lost City Opus.
Fuente is closed the month of Jan. every year.
They havnt shipped any Opus since last years holiday batch.
The aged 3 pac tin sounds decent. Opus from 06, good chit man.

Opus X Lost City isn't the same as the regular Opus X. LC's are one of Fuente's "special" Opus Xes with a higher price tag.
When they have them, TS will sell Opus Xes at MSRP, which puts the bulk of the line in the $10-$15 range.

If you are wanting to try "Opus" I would honestly say the "Lost city" isn't a good sample of what the core of Opus fans are in love with. I have a nice selection of the "Lost city" and they are an interesting smoke but different. If possible I wouldn't start with one of the more obscure vitolas either, one of the tins or a couple singles would be best. My personal favorites after trying most of the range are the No 5, Robusto, Perfecxion X. :2

All tins are marked that way. "Rare Estate Reserve" is just part of the name and 1992 was the first year that Fuente started growing the tobacco that has become the capa leaf on the Opus X. Aside from the cedar wrap on the cigars, they are the same as any other current production Opus X.
