Is there anything special about pipes that would prevent someone from making one?

I don't have a pipe but they intrigue me.

I just have an idea to make a pipe.

Does it have to be made out of wood?

I used to make pipes all the time back in the day. Of varying complexity and interesting components. I will say no more on the grounds that it may incriminate me.

In this case:

A pipe is a tool, with openings on each end. One is always much larger than the other. And you can smoke things out of them. Usually, some kind of leafy plant. :tu

Yes, I know what a pipe is and what it's used for.

Is there anything special I need to know before I try to make one.

Where can I get some parts?

Does the chamber need a sleeve of some sort if its made of wood?

Just wanting to learn about pipes a little.

Also on pipesandcigars.com you can buy te pipe already put together but uncarved. You could do this if you just want to carve one not necessarily make it 100%

If you want to get pipestone from South Dakota it is available. It's mined by hand only by native americans in a ritual style from the only place in the world that has real pipestone. I have a blank myself waiting to be carved, and a traiditional native american pipe made from it. If you want to carve one without drilling out stone you can find briar blanks many places that are ready to carve. Most other woods are not as dense and will not last nearly as long. I have briar blanks that I still haven't carved. It's good to age briar a good 5 years at least before carving. Most pipe companies have places where they age briar before they carve new pipes.

Just some ideas to google.
