Let's face it, for a little old movie that get's re-issued and re-made as much as this one, (and these others)
Star Wars generates an awful lot of story material. This might be a good thread for depositing the best.

Here is a pretty funny story.......

Ehh, not so sure of that. Give him one more generation of kids and one more quirk in the technology
and there will be a Star Wars in 5-D or Sensurround or something like that. But then again, maybe he
understands he is just too old to deal with that even. I do feel for the guy regarding the fanboy
phenomenon. It's a shame when people take ownership of something you created and tell you what's
right and what's not about it. You see that a lot now in the internet age where Joe Schmoo people have
all this access to other people and have to strive to come up with content to impress them with.

I must be the only Star Wars fan in the world who thinks that Darth Maul sucked. Yes, he looked badass, but I didn't see anything else that appealed to me. I'd take Count Dooku over Maul any day of the week. For Christ's sake, Dooku was the second best Dracula EVER. Not to mention his arch-nemesis was Governor Tarkin (Van Helsing).

Si Senior.

I have the first three movies (by release order, so IV, V and VI) in their original CLV Dolby Digital Surround Laser Disc form - these are the _exact_ same as what we saw in the theaters the first time around. By the time the 5.1 AC-3 CAV box set version came out, Lucas had already started tweaking them.

Some of the additional footage he added was nice. Useless, but nice. Except for that Greedo shoots first part.

I agree with you almost 100%, but I assume the laserdisc has Episode IV: A New Hope in the crawl screen. It wasn't in the original release in 1977. But I'm arguing semantics here. I know what you're saying.

IIRC, Star Wars was pressed to LD before Empire was released to the theaters, so I'm not sure there would be any changes, including the crawl screens. :sh

A little research earlier today and I just learned more about Star Wars releases than I ever wanted, or cared, to know....

So it appears that my LD has the episode title, since it's the widescreen version from the mid 80's and not the original pan & scan. Other than that, it's supposedly the same as the original theatrical release.

Seems like there were also about 20 something different release versions of Star Wars on LD (I had no idea, I thought it was like 5 or 6 total between NTSC and PAL), not counting the CAV remastered trilogy box set which, for LDs, marked the first installment of any additional footage.

I'm not advocating the changes Lucas has made since 1997 to his original films (I don't like the new changes at all), but that's proof that he's been making adjustments since the first film was released. No one seemed to care about the adjustments until he started using CGI.

Aside from the adding of the episode number, I don't think anything else was changed. "Release Versions" defined the pressing run, not necessarily a change in the movie (LDs are kind of weird in some of their nomenclature). Exempting the first release version, I think all the pre-box set releases are the same content, what changed was the jackets, P&S vs WS, NTSC/PAL and the fab that made the disc. Different fabs might have used different parameters in the transfer, so things might be lighter or darker but that's about it. It's not like DVDs where they make a gazillion all at once, the runs for LDs were typically much, much smaller numbers, that's why there were so many.

Not sure when they cleaned up the audio, that might have been in the later releases. Also not sure offhand when they went from DD to AC-3, not sure if that happened any time before the box set.

I'm not trying to start an argument here, but some in depth discussion would be nice here....

Lucas made the changes to add the "Episode IV" to the title crawl early on b/c the original release production companies thought that audiences would be confused by starting a new film with episode IV. I don't agree with the other changes, but Lucas owns the film and his vision is his vision. If he wants the changes, then so be it. Do I like all of them? No. But it's not my films to play with.

I was just trying to explain that when LD collectors talk about released versions of a disc, it doesn't necessarily mean that the movie changed, it just means that it was a different pressing run. LD's are confusing and standardized that way, sometimes it changed, sometimes it didn't.

Aside from the title crawl, I don't think anything else was changed until the trilogy box set came out, I also don't think that the audio was remastered until then either - I'll have to check.:sh

Aside from the Han Solo not shooting first anymore bit, I think most of the Trilogy additional footage was as harmless as it was useless and unnecessary (although I did chuckle at the Jawas that went over the top of the bantha and were dangling by the reins and cursing when the speeder bike cut them off)

I'm not crazy about the later changes, but ultimately, I really don't care either. It's just a f'ing movie after all.

*nerd on*

1. Star Destroyers have deflector shields, just as starships from the Federation
2. An Imperial Class Star Destroyer would own the Enterprise-D in no time flat.
3. In order to use their transporters (in this case, to beam a photon torpedo onto the bridge of a star destroyer), their shields must be down in order to do so.

*nerd off*

i actually am looking forward to it.

doing some research with my Star Wars dork buddies, Disney is writing it themselves and it will not be based on any stories that have been release so far.

heck, they own marvel and have done a damn good job with the avengers movies.

and 8 and 9 are slated for production as well.

I disagree here. The latest triology is not as good as the original but they are great films, still way better than any superhero movie (other than the last two Dark Knight movies) of the last 20 years.

That being said, I don't think Disney will be a totally bad thing. They've got the writers and I'm excited for a Star Wars theme park in Orlando :D

In all seriousness though, I do agree with much of what Powers said. Disney is fun and easy to poke fun at, BUT they generally get sh!t right too, THEY KNOW THEIR MARKET really well, and do a very good job catering to it. They've got access to the creative talent by the bucketful, so I really do expect them to do a GOOD job with the upcoming films. And I'm looking forward to something original, something new that my inner nerd hasn't seen/read before in the star wars universe. Best of all, as long as the films keep making money, they'll keep on making em! new star wars for everyone, hurray!

That's what I think most of us were trying to say. I don't like the direction that Lucasfilms had taken the franchise. I have to disagree that the episodes 1-3 films are great films. I don't know that I could call 1 even a good movie. For a guy who created Darth Vader/Han Solo/Yoda etc to come up with a character like Jar Jar sounds like someone who is resting on his laurels. The movies did one thing well, and that is to paint the back story to how Anakin became Darth Vader. Other than that I, IMHO, find them mostly unwatchable.

I don't consider Star Wars a, "superhero" movie, but just to play along...

Superhero movies better than the Star Wars prequels (off the top of my head):
X-Men
X2
X-Men: First Class
Spiderman
Spiderman 2
The Amazing Spider Man
Iron Man
Iron Man 2
The Avengers
Thor
Captain America
Batman Begins
The Incredibles (yep; I'd rather watch a Pixar movie than the prequels)

It's no coincidence that the best movie by far of the series (ESB), is the one that Lucas had the least amount of input.

I spoke of my disappointment with episode 1 to my older brother after first watching it in the theater. His response made sense. He mentioned a few things I have since forgotten, and that it culminated in a a land, space, and lightsaber battle, all of which follow the formula of the previous movies. The problem was that after so many years I was expecting more. Sure, Jar Jar is annoying as hell and Anakin was whiney, but so was Luke. Luke was a whiny little SOB.

Anyway, the first three episodes may not have been perfect, but at least we have them.

I'll give the Devil his due, Duel of the Fates was the best lightsaber battle of the franchise (although the convenient absence of Force Speed by Obi-Wan to get through the energy gates still vexes me).

Yeah, Luke started out as a whiny, naive girl, that ended up being a badass Jedi who didn't blink in the face of Vader or Palpatine (all with minimal training might I add).

Anakin started out as a whiny girl that ended up being a...whiny girl. As I told my buddies a long time ago in a galaxy far, far, away..."Wah"nakin wasn't the Chosen One, he was the Chosen Whine.

I agree with the first half of your post.

However, I disagree completely with the second half of your post. Darth Maul is completely overrated. A Sith who rarely speaks and is trained in Kung Fu (Ray Park) and looks entirely badass is great on the surface, but the guy had no character/personality at all to me. I'll take Count Dookoo anyday of the week over Darth Maul. Dookoo fit in with the traditional Star Wars story. Maul was merely an assassin and is pretty much just a Sith version of Boba Fett.

Lucas wrote scripts for part 7-9 a long time ago. Hopefully they follow them.

Harrison Ford said he'd never do another Star Wars film, but money talks. I'd love to see the original cast in the new films, even if they are minor roles. Hey, the old cast worked for the Star Trek films. Why not have the original three Star Wars cast reprise their roles? Mark Hammil is still younger than Christopher Lee and Alec Guiness at this point. Carrie Fisher and Ford could be diplomats in the new films, since they are too old to be the focal points of the action.

Harrison Ford hated/hates the Han Solo charatcter (it's why he was frozen in carbonite at the end of ESB; he had only signed on to do two films and was reluctant to do a third so Lucas needed a way to explain Solo's absence in case he didn't participate in ROJ).

Solo is a pretty flat character. Also, he thought the character had pretty much served the films' purpose and wouldn't be very relevent for future films after Empire. Ford wanted more challenging work from what I remember, but he has shown interest in reprising his role of late.

I agree completely, but as far as the original trilogy went...

Sort of a similar situation with the Nimoy "Spock" character in the first three Trek films. Nimoy was only in half of the first film, got killed off in the second, and was resurrected in the third due to character issues (and a contract dispute).
