Alright I have lurked in the Good Eats forum long enough without chiming in on my absolute favorite food in the world... SUSHI!

Ok Sushi lovers, this is the thread to talk about your favorite types of sushi. Good places to eat and just general information about this wonderful type of cuisine.

I love all types of sushi; sashimi, nigiri, maki etc etc. I am a big supporter of traditional style nigiri sushi and eat it most times when visiting a Japanese restaurant. Not a big fan of a lot of the "Americanized" rolls hitting restaurants (sushi should never contain cream cheese IMO) but will try anything once :)

My favorite sushi order contains Maguro, Hamachi and Unagi Nigiri sushi as well as Tako and Hotetgai. I will try many types of rolls but generally shy away from anything containing the words "spicy salmon" or "mayo/crm cheese".

So.... let's talk SUSHI!

The best sushi I ever had was the Toro tuna in Tokyo... unbelievable!!

I still love tuna sushi, but also like some specality rolls. The place near me make a roll called "sexy girl" its a roll filledwith spicy tuna, shrimp tempura, surrounded by rice with lobster tempura on top... drizzled with this spicy sauce.

Its arranged on the plate so that the two shrimp tails stick out of either end and looks like a girls side ponytails and then they draw a face with the sauce

I think tomorrow night is a gonnna have to be sushi.

Sushi freaking rocks. Still, the two that I can't stand are uni and natto. Bleh, natto just makes my skin crawl. I try it roughly once a year, but still :pu

I'd do sashimi twice a week if I still worked near a good sushi place.

Unagi, maguro tuna, and hamachi are always ordered. Then I check out what else is available. There isn't a lot of sashimi I won't eat.

Once a week for me. I stay away from the rolls with ton of **** in them, but I have a soft spot for spicy tuna/salmon with avocado. That said, some places make their own spicy sauce and others mix hot sauce with mayo. There is a huge difference. Some places also include the little red fish eggs in the spicy sauce which I believe is actually traditional! So go ahead XXX, eating spicy tuna does not break the rules:tu

These wax esters (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ester) may rapidly cause gastrointestinal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gastrointestinal) symptoms following consumption; however, these effects are usually short lived.

The gastrointestinal symptoms, called "keriorrhoea (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Keriorrhoea&action=edit&redlink=1)", caused by these wax esters may include oily orange diarrhea (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diarrhea), discharge, or leakage from the rectum that may smell of mineral oil (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mineral_oil). The discharge can stain clothing and occur without warning 30 minutes to 36 hours after consuming the fish. The oil may pool in the rectum and cause frequent urges for bowel movements due to its lubricant qualities and may be accidentally discharged by the passing of gas (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flatulence). Symptoms may occur over a period of one or more days. Other symptoms may include stomach cramps, loose bowel movements, diarrhea, headaches, nausea, and vomiting.

There is absolutely no better food than sushi and I am lucky to have a place close to my house in Martinez/Pleasant Hill border in the bay area called "Jo's" I just tell Jo at the bar to hook me up and I'll tell him when to stop. My current favorite right now is a kelp marinated halibut and Washu beef nigiri

Sushi (good sushi) is one of my great vices. Living in Los Angeles gives you access to so many good sushi restaraunts, only if you're willing to wait/go out of your way. My local "hole in the wall" back in Cali was this place called Omino Sushi. I went there every weekend and the owner knew me on sight. He'd give me samples of new dishes he'd be working on and wanted my opinion on them. Awesome place, I miss it so much.

There was another sushi place in Old Town Pasadena that my friends and I were notorious at. The sushi chef there got to know us and came up with a special roll for us: the "911" roll. The story goes is that one night we were eating, predominantly, a lot of spicy tuna cut-rolls and we kept on telling him to make it hotter and hotter. By the end of the night he ran out of stuff to throw in to make it hot enough. Next week, we returned back to the place and he came prepared. He made us a special cut roll, and placed it infront of us. The spicy tuna center was an unnatural color of red.. think bright, BRIGHT red. On the outside was alternating pieces of grilled unagi and avocado. The roll was delicious, but FREAKING HOT. Come to find out, he went out during the week and bought a bottle of Dave's Insanity Sauce and decided to unleash it on us. Mwhahahaha. I miss that place, too.

Not a sushi place, but that has an awesome unagi donburi is Tokyo Lobby. The menu is a picture album, and if you spend enough time going through the album you'll find menu combination are cheaper ordering one way than another way!

Most often I'm a pretty traditional guy, my order usually consists of:

maguro
inari (throwback from growing up in Hawaii)
aji, otherwise saba
unagi
ankimo (rare, but Omino had it all the time)
uni (only if it's FRESH.. have had bad uni and it's not a good experience)

Also, a well done chirashi is a thing to behold. Mmmmm..

Best sushi I ever had was a few years ago, with some friends. One of them knew the chef. we didnt order anything, he just pulled out the special stuff for us :)
to this day, I dont know what all I had... but it was GOOD.

happiest sushi time in my life was when I was studying in London one summer. Right across the street from me was a cheap sushi place. I mean, REALLY cheap. sushi for lunch EVERY day :tu

I love sushi and the other foods associated with it. I love the raw fishes and Japanese salads that are available at sushi bars. Seaweed with sesame is delicious. The rice gets to be a little too filling for me so I try to stick with sashimi.

For all you sushi lovers, a great book is Trevor Corson's The Zen of Fish.
(That's the hardcover title.) The paperback version is out and is titled The Story Of Sushi. I covers all the aspects of sushi, rice, soy sauce, fish, etc. told alongside of the adventures of students at a Sushi chef school.
Reading this book will really make you hungry and make you appreciate what a great thing sushi is.

I'm a new fan of sushi. Found a place around the corner from me that seems to have a pretty good menu. The only problem I have is that I always order the chef's choice sashimi so I generally have no idea what I'm eating. Nothin' better than a piece of good fish, dash of wasabi, slice of pickled ginger, and a dip in soy sauce. Now I'm hungry...

So go ahead XXX, eating spicy tuna does not break the rules:tu

The reason behind it for me is that as a general rule restaurants will use fish that is not fresh enough to serve as Sashimi or Nigiri to make the spicy tuna mix. And while its not bad tasting for my own personal tastes I try to stay with the freshest fish available. It also doesn't help that I live in AZ so I'm leery of Sushi restaurants that I'm not intimately familiar with :D

Here's the tip of your lifetime sushi lovers...

Every Japanese-trained sushi chef (far from all of them are) has a "signature" sushi that is his/her own invention...and they guard it very, very closely.

Your assignment is to befriend your local sushi chef, compliment them, encourage them and generally suck-up and kiss their a**, then pop the question. "Do you make a sushi that nobody else does?"

You will be surprised, amazed and astounded. ;)

I hit a sushi restaurant at least once a week. When the various specialty rolls first started appearing I wasn't too jazzed, but over the years I've come to accept and enjoy a few of them.

When I first moved into our city, it was still pretty rural. Urban spread hadn't reached quite this far yet. The old bowling alley still had a sign posted about not spitting juice on the floor. There was exactly one sushi restaurant operating here. Now 25 years later there's almost as many sushi joints as there are Starbucks. Fascinating how popular it's become over time.

The alley finally took the sign down too. ;)

Sashimi for me please, nothing like the real deal!

When I lived in Sandy Ego (20+ years) we would take tubes of wasabi out on the charter fishing boats whenever we went out, which was often.

On the return to port, as the deck hands were cleaning the fish, we would ask them to slice some sashimi pieces for us, right off the live and kickin' fish. Add a little wasabi and mmmmmmmmmmm, the stuff was so fresh it would jump and quiver in the mouth from the live nerve reaction to chewing it.

Now THAT'S good eats. If you live near the coasts, try it some time!

You just had to go there, huh Dustin? :r:r

I've been eating sushi for 27 years, started up in the '80's as an 8-year old with my folks who often would introduce me to new & terrifying cuisines. We'd hit our local sushi bar at the time, me in my cubscout uniform and I quickly became known as the Sushi Scout. I even dabbled a little behind the counter at one restaurant, a gift my folks got me for a birthday.

I learned to love sushi early on and my tastes have definitely grown over the years. When I first hated it and was disgusted upon seeing my Pop eat it, I now adore

UNI!!! and I'm often disappointed if my joint doesn't have it fresh. And it must be fresh. I've learned that we're fortunate enough here in L.A. to be home to the WORLD'S best sea urchin (uni). They raise it up in Santa Barbara and even the best sushi joint in NY (arguably Sushi Yasuda) gets theirs from Santa Barbara, not Japan. Uni just reminds me more than any other item that I'm definitely eating something from the sea. The way it disintegrates and kind of liquifies in the mouth upon each bite....man, I can't have enough.

I've never ordered a special from my local sushi bar but they do a shooter with uni, oyster, quail egg and I guess sake. Sounds awesome and I'll likely try it soon.

Aside from Uni, I love hamachi (yellowtail) and sake (salmon). I have to get that every time for sure. Sweet shrimp (and it's different from regular 'ol shrimp) with the fried heads are definitely a favorite too. And I do tend to like the nifty unusual rolls too.

Club Sushi down in Hermosa Beach offers an amazing 1/2 price happy hour including most sushi, 1/2 off beer, wine & sake & apps. I love going there because the sushi is good, not amazing, but certainly good, a good value and all the sushi chefs are Hispanic and I've never seen that anywhere else. My buddy Efrem, the head chef, even won 'Best Sushi Chef' in the South Bay one year and I came on in and had him autograph our issue. He loved it.

Oh, so down at Club Sushi, they make a yellowtail roll with jalapeno, cilantro and some lemon juice and it's truly amazing.

There was another sushi place in Old Town Pasadena that my friends and I were notorious at. The sushi chef there got to know us and came up with a special roll for us: the "911" roll. The story goes is that one night we were eating, predominantly, a lot of spicy tuna cut-rolls and we kept on telling him to make it hotter and hotter. ankimo (rare, but Omino had it all the time)

Also, a well done chirashi is a thing to behold. Mmmmm..

Totally agree. Ankimo for those of you who don't know or haven't tried it...it's Monkfish Liver, over rice, usually with a strip of seawood or packed atop like what they do to Uni. So good. Not terribly livery, if you're worried about it. I also like Chirashi but didn't know it was called that!

Havin takeout sushi for lunch.

Pay by the pound. I get like 4 lbs for 3 bucks!

That's freakin' crazy Al! I'll be right over.

I love sushi and sashimi. For me, the best way to experience sushi is the way of omakase.

:tpd: If I go to a place I've never been and I've researched it on the net, I'll usually order Omakase and let the chef choose for me since I'll eat absolutely anything.

OK, I'm leaving for Japan on Friday Morning for a week and a half.

I will eat damn near anything, but have never tried sushi.

My question to Dustin and others that seem to have a sushi fettish.......
Where do I start?
I prefer spicy things.
I love all types of fish, but do not necessarily adore what some call a 'fish' taste.
My favorite fish plates include Orange Roughy, Tuna, Trout (Rainbow and Atlantic), Halibut, Sea Bass, Swordfish.....
So, you see I prefer most that are more steak-like.

Any help?

I eat strictly traditional sushi, and usually once every other week or so.

Kelly - Where do you usually go in our hood? There's a joint down the street from us called 'Asaka' that's quite good but not cheap and the service isn't great. I'll often order takeout but they've got a great patio with a 180-degree ocean view. I'd say that place is my usual place.

Stu - Man, you're gonna have a blast! I was only there as a kid but I do remember it was a little different. I'm sure others will chime in about their recent experiences but expect to see some strange things on the menu. One such strange item was horsemeat sashimi. Frankly, it tasted like a cooked steak. Not sure how. It was pretty darn good.

I'd start with sake (salmon). Very mild, buttery fish. The good stuff just kinda melts in your mouth. And if you like smoked salmon (lox), you're gonna love this. It's 10x better.

Hamachi (yellowtail) is also very tame. Same with Maguro (tuna).

I'd start with those. Have a great trip!

That's what my immediate family use to when I was growing up in Hawaii. We'd go fishing, catch the fish, and slice a few up for sashimi. Shoyu and a bit of dry mustard (back then we didn't use wasabi) and it's "ono kine grinds" time while the other fish cook over a hibachi... :dr

Also tako (octopus) sashimi. Fresh or smoked. Plain, shoyu/mustard, or a miso sauce. Another great childhood memory.

Stu, you are going to have a great time I'm sure. Where in Japan are you going? I'm envious because Japan is one of those places to visit before I die and I've never been.

Anyways when I was first introduced to sushi I started with the traditional types. And I started with Nigiri Sushi (the fish on an oblong ball of rice) as Sashimi just seemed to exotic at the time. I started mild with Unagi and Ebi (Eel and Shrimp) as both had cooked fish on top of the rice. Kind of got me used to the format. Then I moved on to Maguro and Hamachi (tuna and yellowtail) which has the raw fish and then branched out into the more exotic Nigiri Sushi. I then made my way into rolls and then finally into Sashimi. By the time I reached Sashimi I had a very healthy appreciation for sushi.

I would suggest for your first order at a restaurant or Sushi bar you order an order of Unagi, Ebi and Maguro. Two cooked styles and one raw style. You will get a good sense of what Nigiri sushi is all about and it is an easy introduction. Then if you decide sushi is something you can enjoy as your traveling companions or the sushi chef for their recommendations on what you should try. A good sushi chef will steer you in the right direction and give you a greater appreciation for the art of Sushi.

Enjoy my friend, you will have a blast!

I have never had anything I hated... but I am not a huge fan of salmon used in sashimi. I usually just tell the chef to start bringing it, to not back off of the eel and sea urchin, and to leave off the salmon.

St Lou Stu, i will agree with LasciviousXXX about trying sushi first a a GOOD local restauraunt first. unless you are an adventurous type eater. I grew up eating a lot of different foods thanks to my dad.

you mentioned that you like tuna, how do you usually eat, i like the seared on the outside raw inside. if you are the same way try tuna first. try some the cooked stuff first, like uni.

i went to japan about 5 years ago, as far as dinning experiance goes, basically i ordered by pictures. not to bad, but then again i eat most anything.

best thing i had there was the mini soup and noodle places by the train stations. every thing was fresh cooked right in front of you. and even paying for it was a kick, vending machine style. pop in 50 - 100 yen (about $5 or $10) push a button and out comes a ticket, give it to the cook and they just whip it up right in front of you. best part is the bowls are pretty big, i'm a big boy and i got nice and filled up by these simple meals even walking around all day.

Totally agree; while I like mackerel, it's not for those who don't like 'fishy'. Spanish Mackerel is much more mild, however, and sometimes it will dance flamenco.

Lately I have been on a White Tuna kick. I love it.

Yellowtail is another favorite. Fatty Yellowtail (belly meat) or the Yellow Tail version of Otoro is probably my all time favorite raw fish.

I like a few pieces of Uni occasionally with quail egg on top to finish a meal.

Aside from that I eat just about all of it. I used to be really anti Mackerel but in the past few years I have a really developed a taste for the stronger fish. I enjoy Aji or Spanish Mackerel.

Recently a Korean guy that was eating next to me at the bar intoduced me to Korean Style sushi. (According to him) This is sashimi served with pieces of seaweed (Nori). You wrap the fish with the seaweed and dip in sesame oil or a mix of sesame oil, soy sauce and wasabi. No rice.

ALWAYS ASK FOR FRESH WASABI! - It is different and not made with the paste. It is the actually ground root and is 10x better. Better Sushi Bars will have it.

For desert one of my favorites is called Mochi Ice Cream. It's a rice paste that is similar to a dough. This is wrapped around small portions of ice cream. The Red Bean kind is very good.

When I was in San Diego a couple of weeks ago I went to Nobu inside the Hard Rock Hotel. Their sushi was to die for even though that is not their specialty.
I try and have sushi at least once a week. There is a place around my house called Sushi Para that has all you can eat for 18.99 it is not bad but lately they have been doing something with their rice to make it sweet and it is not good.
But when I am at work there is another place called Nobu's that has great sushi for lunch that is reasonably priced unlike for dinner. I all about the salmon and tuna sushi. I do love a good spicy salmon roll. And yes I do like the roll with smoked salmon, cream cheese and scallions.

OK I want some sushi. Who's buying!! :)

Ah, good old Pier Ave in Hermosa…Club Sushi is one of my old haunts. I haven’t been there in years, but we used to go all the time for happy hour. I agree that the sushi wasn’t the best, but was good. Definitely can’t beat it for happy hour! After filling up there, we’d cruise to Sangria, Sharkeez (before it became a nub :r) and/or Hennessey’s. :tu

I'll have to check out that roll whenever I'm down on Pier.

hmmm ... from wikipedia:

Reminds me of Olestra...
From Wiki as well.
Olestra was approved by the Food and Drug Administration for use as a food additive in 1996 and was initially used in potato chips under the WOW brand by Frito Lay. In 1998, which was the first year Olestra products were marketed nationally after the FDA’s Food Advisory Committee confirmed a judgment it made 2 years earlier, sales were over $400 million.[5] However, by 2000 sales slowed to $200 million, largely caused by the unappealing side effects described on the FDA-mandated health warning label:

This Product Contains Olestra. Olestra may cause abdominal cramping and loose stools. Olestra inhibits the absorption of some vitamins and other nutrients. Vitamins A, D, E, and K have been added.

– [6]

This condition (normally occurring only by excessive consumption in a short period of time) became popularly known as "anal leakage." Sales were so slow that P&G gave up on attempts to widen the uses of Olestra, and even sold off their Cincinnati-based Olestra factory to Twin Rivers Technologies in February 2002.[4]

Love sushi, but just cannot do Uni. I have been to Japan many, many times and have been told that "supreme Uni" is great (it depends on the freshness and where you go), but a couple bad experiences has killed it for me.

Now, I have had all sorts of sashimi, including horse, chicken and just about all parts of beef (be creative). Interesting stuff can be very tasty sometimes.:tu

I'll have to check out that roll whenever I'm down on Pier.

Sharkeez nub :D....NO MO! They rebuilt it and it looks NICE! No wonder they set themselves on fire. The old joint was a dive.

When you do roll down there Mike.....call me, I'm down, whenever I can break away. And we can smoke outside Naja's at the Redondo Pier afterwards and try 70 of their 77 beers on tap. It's all about moderation.

So for those of us who are new to sushi. How does Sea Urchin taste? I'm willing to try new stuff (had Octopus and liked it, eel not so much). I always see it and wanna try it, but am not really into anything too fishy. Should I? My current fave is yellowtail. Just don't want to look like a complete idiot if its a stronger tasting item.

UNI - do it - try it - do it

Like others have said and I've touched upon, Sea Urchin is definitely an acquired taste. It's not fishy like mackerel and I'm definitely impressed you tried Octopus and liked it. Not sure what you didn't like about the eel...some don't like that it's EEL (bottom dweller, scavenger, etc.) but I find it quite good. And it's cooked (which takes away the 'fear' or 'grossness' of eating something raw) with the sweet eel sauce (which is more like teriyaki sauce) on top. If you're feeling like giving it another try, I much prefer freshwater eel so give that a shot. And good octopus sure is good. You can even ask them to put eel sauce on top of that and it's a nice combo.

So, back to Uni (sea urchin)....again, the best comes from Santa Barbara, California, not Japan. I wonder if the Japanese order from us? When you look at a piece of the Uni sushi, the Uni (and correct me if I'm wrong here but I believe what we eat is the roe or eggs and not the actual urchin....and it doesn't look like any fish eggs I've seen before) resembles a tongue.

I don't believe there's much of a smell to it and some add the quail egg on top for an extra 'wow' factor and more creamy, silky, yolky, goopy goodness. I, on the other hand, tend to be more of a purist. I like the plain 'ol uni, resting on a bed of rice, surrounded by a crown of seaweed.

So imagine an orange-y tongue as you lift the piece to your mouth. As you bite, the roe tends to kind of melt/liquefy in your mouth. Not like popping the larger salmon roe that is also served the same way but just kind of melting, creamy in your mouth. The first taste, well, tastes like the sea.

As I've mentioned before, I order this every chance I get. This is the one item on the menu that truly reminds me (as if I need reminding) that I'm eating something that came from the sea. Sometimes, the sushi chef will tell me they don't have it when they actually do and that's because they make the decision for you as to whether or not it's fresh enough. It's unfortunate that some of you have ordered it and those places haven't taken this step in quality control, but I'm not surprised. Also, I think we're spoiled out here on the West Coast because we're so close to Santa Barbara and it's almost always going to be available good & fresh.

So, that first bite is 'of the sea' and then you get on in to the rice & the seaweed and they complement the wonderful salty, creamy, sea-like flavors really well. Some folks don't like the texture but I love it. And again, I wouldn't say it's 'fishy' tasting, just like swallowing some seawater...but better!

Down in Redondo Beach at the pier, I even shared a live urchin with a buddy of mine as it crawled across our plate. I don't like harming living things myself, so that was a bit tough. But tasty!

I'm dying. Must have UNI now!

I hope that helps and I wish you luck on the Uni slope. Please tell us about it if you do end up trying it!

man do i love sushi, rolled or traditional it doesn't matter. i don't mind cream cheese on certain rolls. a mexican roll with cream cheese is actually pretty damn good if done properly. thank god i have a place that does both and we eat there once a week. they also serve all types of sake.

charlie is the primary chef. he is awesome and if you sit at the bar you can watch true skill being performed. he can roll a roll like no other. just a fine layer of rice perfectly wrapped. he did a special roll just for me the other night, i called it the rock and roll, had snapper, salmon, crab, shrimp and cucumber all in one and it was excellent.

they do incredible tempura also and have a ton of stuff not on the menu. the place is a hole in the wall but it's won best of tampa bay for many years!

it's called kaiko's. it's in clearwater off mcmullen booth but is by far the best in the area and charlie is just bad ass. if anyone is ever in the area i'll join you for sushi there and we can head to the bar after for a smoke and a beer.

It's hard to find great sushi in Oklahoma, however "good" sushi isn't out of the question. In fact my fiance and I have probably eaten sushi 2-3 times a week for the last 7 years we've spent together.

Nothing better then just your standard tuna roll! I'm not a big fan of all the fancy "new age" crap, but do eat some of it. We are mainly nigiri type people!

Good thread.

One of the best sushi I've ever had in Los Angeles was out at this restaurant in what I thought was nearby the Rampart District. Off the I-5, down a ways once you crest the hills by Universal Studios. Place didn't look like it (simple stucco sides, single entrance), but it was always packed when we would go there. Had three sushi bars in the building itself. They'd use *generous* cuts of fish to make their sushi, almost like getting a sushi and a piece of sashimi for the same price.

Might you remember that place?

How long ago did you go? Universal Studios is off the 101....so if it might have been the 101 and not the 5 & over in Studio City (where Universal Studios is located), perhaps it was Katsuya? That place is tremendously popular (esp. with the celebs) and pretty good. It's in a very small stripmall, maybe 5 stores?

We went to Oomasa. The only time there hasn't been a line when I've been was in the afternoon. Luckily we got there around 6 or we would have waited longer.

Nah, definitely off the I-5 as it was further south of Universal Studios. I'd probably say if you split the distance between the 101 and the 110 along the I-5, it'd be somewhere around there. It's probably been 7 years or so since I've been there so it's definitely within the realm of being gone (or moved).

Now I wish I definitely paid more attention to where my friend was driving when we went there.

Ooooof! Never heard of Oomasa; I'll have to add it to my list. Katsuya in Studio City, I think, is the original. There's also one now in Brentwood & Hollywood. I've been to the Studio City one once and the Hollywood one once. Hollywood was definitely a bit of a scene and the attached S Bar is pretty cool. I think the SC one was probably better (but) less trendy.

Folks really really love Katsuya though; it might be a bit too hyped but you should check it out once.

One thing to keep in mind about Oomasa is that there’s not much of a scene there. The décor is dated….red, vinyl seats, but the food makes it worth checking out. Funny thing is that I saw an online dating commercial on TV the other day that was filmed there (can’t remember the name of the site).

My first experience with sushi was some really bad sea urchin. My "friends" felt that it would be amusing to see me choke some of that down. It took me years to try it again. But recently a decent lil sushi bar here in Lexington served me some "baby" sushi...i guess you call em philly rolls...i really enjoyed that. So, I think I'll try something a little more adventurous next time around. :)

Now I can't wait to go back home and eat some. There's this one place my family and I go every Friday like clockwork. It's called Kotobuki in Orange County by El Toro. The place only opens Thur-Sat 5-10 PM. And let me tell you it gets packed in there. We don't even order. We just sit down and Hiro just does what he does best and serves us.

Hey, what's the diff betweeen otoro & chutoro?
Otoro is a very fatty cut of tuna, and very tender. Chutoro is in the middle, fattier than the regular maguro or toro tuna.

Oh, and hey, Jeff, you're close to Syracuse...you get out there ever? I've got a good friend from there so I'm asking her if she knows any good sushi joints.
I have not eaten sushi in Syracuse. You used to have to go to Albany or Binghamton to get decent sushi, but in the last couple of years, a good place opened up in Oneonta (where I live) and Delhi (where I work). :wo

You're welcome. A real sushi restaurant will usually let you order a la carte, so it's easy to try stuff and figure out what you like. Salmon, tuna, and yellowtail are probably some of the milder types of sushi. You don't want to start out with something like sea urchin. Eel (which is commonly broiled, not raw) is another good choice (my personal favorite). Most places will have unagi, which is a freshwater eel. Anago is a saltwater eel that may also be available.

For the most rewarding sushi experience, if you got a good place with a reputable sushi chef at the bar, just go to the bar and ask for the chef's omakase.. You don't necessarily know what you'll eat or what it'll cost, but as long as you have a good chef, it's well worth it!

Still a bit of a novice here. I've found I love the shrimp tempura at Fishbone's in Grosse Point (near Sailchaser's house). But, my favorite is the Magaro at Noble Fish in Clawson. It's not even a restaurant, but a Japanese fish market that happens to have a sushi counter in the back & 2 or 3 (2-man) tables. Agreed that is very much where it is.

If you get up to the west side. Sakana (59th and 101) is one of the only other places I know that gets Ama-ebi in. They have a few locations on in chandler and the other off of indian bend and scottsdale. But if you get a chance they always have fresh stuff in. They get amber jack a lot too which is one of my fav's. But I spent time in Japan in high school so I always lean toward the more traditional fare myself.

My favorite place for sushi is actually a buffet that's $8.50 and they have a really good selection with pretty decent quality.

I always get the same rolls-spicy salmon/tuna rolls, a spicy crab with shrimp on top, a roll with flounder/avocado, and a roll that I don't know by name, but it has eel, crab, lettuce, and has a "crumby" texture on the outside. I eat each bite with wasabi for some heat. I also get an eel roll or some salmon/tuna nigri on occasion. I'll eat most salmon/tuna/crab as long as I doesn't have cucumber in it or I pick it out.

Reviews on the place were quite good, so I checked it out last night. Here is what I ended up with and must say everything was delicious. It was a good deal because many of the rolls to choose from are the types of rolls you'd pay $10-15 each. I reckon these 2 plates could have cost at least $40 each virtually anywhere else.

Here is a sampling of last night's haul. It was good, but I wasn't happy they put cucumber on rolls that didn't list cucumber anywhere in the description. Otherwise, I would have had them 86 the nasty stuff.

I had something on a cruise once. It was tuna that I know. It appeared seared slightly and had some type of green "pine needle like" thing on top with black pepper corns. That was tasty. :sh

Are you coming to indy? The name of the place is sushi club and it's on the west side of Indy.

They have a website with a menu, but I found through some site other than google.

When you search the address it says its Asian Surf and Turf, which has a website that lists the same address. Although it appears that place is closed, so I am guessing it reopened as Sushi Club. :hm

Went to Sushi Club again last night with another couple. It's a 30 minute drive for both of us to get there and the other couple loves sushi. After dinner, they both felt it was one of the best places they'd ever been for sushi.

We polished off 12 specialty rolls, salads, and some apps between all of us last night. Great deal for $21.99/pp. :banger

This is just one of the spreads from last night.

I had to stop by my favorite place this afternoon as part of my mental health clinical post-conference unwind. :tu

All were great as always. This is the $19.99/$21.99 all you can eat made to order sushi roll place. The $21.99 price is on weekends and expands another 10 or so rolls not offered during the week. They allowed me to sample them tonight at the $21.99 price.

On the plate with 2 rolls, the one on the left has jalapenos in it with a bit of sweet sauce. The jalapenos were so overpowering you couldn't taste anything else. I love me some wasabi and to the point it hurts, but jalapenos aren't my choice for heat, that's for sure.

It's a darn good thing I don't live less than 1/2 a mile from this place like I used to live ~ 10 years ago, albeit it was a Pizza Hut at the time. :r

More than likely LOL. Kabuki roll was $14 and the Firecracker app in the top right is $6. Add vodka to that and it starts getting pricey.

This weekend the wife and I are going to our local place that offers all you can eat sushi. Runs about $50 or so for the both of us and it has ruined me on other sushi places. Everywhere else I go I look at the prices of rolls and think, "For twice that I could get all you can eat!" Looking forward to it, we haven't been in quite a while.

I have always thought of sushi as kind of..............well, gross.

Then the boss gave me some money for food on a trip and I told myself that I was going to eat foods that I have never tried.

Long story short, I LOVE SUSHI!

Me and a buddy of mine ate $100.00 worth of sushi last week.

Welcome to the fold! The sushi fold :D

Some great looking starter rolls there. Being adventurous is kind of my M.O. so I always appreciate when others go outside of their comfort zones as well. Start giving some nigiri sushi a try. Its the next step up from the rolls and it is generally my favorite. Plenty of options and they are almost all fantastic!

Then after that, you can move on to Uni :D

Wasn't sure what it was called but I did have some nigiri sushi, didn't get a picture of it. I like the yellow tail? the best.

I have been told that the UNI sushi is kind of an acquired taste/texture kind of sushi. I may have to try it.

No, the 3rd pic is a jumbo spider roll-soft shell crab & avocado w/ eel sauce/spicy mayo.

For the record, the others are:

1) Precious roll-shrimp tempura w/ lobster salad/spicy salmon on top
2) American Dream-spicy tuna/avocado topped w/ red snapper
4) Magic castle-spicy tuna/cream cheese w/ tuna on top
Speedy Way-spicy crab topped with shredded crab/spicy mayo/crunchies on top
