View Full Version : Butane Torches

Hey all . . .

When it comes to lighting my cigars, I prefer to use a butane torch because I take a good amount of time toasting the foot and gertting a nice ring of fire going before I actually start taking some draws off of it. I've been using some decent torches so far, but they're a little short on longevity and burn strength. I read somewhere that you need to "bleed" the excess gas out of the torch before refueling it and while that does seem to work in restoring it to its original burn, the butane still doesn't last very long. I'm assuming that I'm just using some low-end torches and should probably bite the bullet and upgrade to something more reliable. I'm curious if anyone here has some suggestions? I used one at the lounge the other day that looked like a minature oil can that had a spool on it you had to turn "on" before igniting it - and while it burned magnificently, it also looked like it just consumed butane like a Hummer does gas! I think I'm looking for something more portable!

For a good lighter that goes really easy on the butane, I like the Blazer PB-207.

There are also some extreme deal lighters out of Hong Kong (I will look for the link) that come out to a couple bucks apiece....been using one for the last several weeks, it's a hoot...and no big deal if it craps out in 6 months.

Yup, I have one of these too, and it works great, and a tank fills lasts a long time.

I have this little lighter, While I don't use it for me I use it to light the ladies at the bars or I let the other guys use it to light there cigars or cigarettes. I think it works just fine and it last a pretty good while. I like the fact that the tank is clear so I know to refill it before I go out or it will be alright.

While I have several lighters I just got one that I really enjoy lighting my cigars with because it does suck a great job at toasting the foot. Most of the time that is all I do to start smoking it.
It is a triple flame Black ops, it will burn through some fuel, but it will last a week or so or a night of HERFs. It comes with a punch on it as well so if you misplace your cutter for the night.

I got it from a christmas deal packs one of the smoke shops was having.
I will post a link to the thread

I would highly recommend either of the DealExtreme lighters. The second is a bit large for your pocket but hold a ton of fuel. The first one is my go to lighter. Holds enough fuel to light 3 cigars a day for 2-3 weeks. I have gifted at least 50 of these over the years. Cost is $2ea when you buy 3 and use the bulkrate shipping code. Delivery is a bit slow but they are great lighters. The Blazer is probably the most reliable lighter but is more expensive. :2

The time I had mine in the rotation, it lit almost 100 cigars on one fill....can't hurt to have some spares.

I got one like this dealextreme.com (http://www.dealextreme.com/p/honest-adjustable-flame-butane-jet-torch-lighter-19321) from walmart in the heat shrink tube section for 15.00.
I like that it has large tank and soft flame or torch has a big base so it works great as a table top yet not bad in the pocket.
and for these prices I might get me a few more.
the only thing I would like a a clear base but it looks like this model has a little window not bad

I echo the dealextreme advice! Haven't ordered from them in a few years, but when I run out of lighters again, it will be the first place I go!

Great advice, I just pulled the trigger on six of the Deal Extreme lighters for less than $15. Thanks for the tip!

I have been really happy with my Xikar lighters, and never had a problem with any of them really. I just get sick of filling them all the time. I just purchased two more Xikar's on cigarbid.com The plunge for 19.00 and the Enigma for 29.00 so they are real resonalbe on price if you look on the "Devil Site"

I have been using both of the lighters that were reccommended at the top of this thread for a few weeks and they have both been great except for one thing, I had to remove the metal cover because it would constantly upen up in my pocket and it just got annoying however it still functions fine without the cover just not quite as "pretty" this lighter (http://www.dealextreme.com/p/compact-1300-c-butane-jet-lighter-4179)
I already placed another order with them for some of their flint fired soft flame lighters, we'll see how those work.

I was told today in the shop that the type of butane you use to refill your ligter makes a difference on how it burns. Something about the impurities in non-premium butane "gums up" the lighter. I believe that to be true and not just a marketing ploy, but if a torch isn't lighting due to bad butane, is there a way to flush it so you can put better butane in and have it return to its original functionality or is that it for that lighter?

The shop is right, I use the vector or xikar gas its triple refined. The cheap Ronson gas messes up my better triple jets to the point they wont fire. But what I have noticed is the cheaper jet lighter will usually burn what ever you fill them with. I would drain the "cheap" gas out by pushing in on the little fill valve till it hisses all out, then refill. It should get it back to the "original functionality.

:tpd:

also if you are still having trouble with your lighter you can try blowing butane into the "burner" of the lighter (when it is not lit of course) sometimes that will dislodge a possible clog.

Thanks guys. My local shop sells Xikar and Lotus butane, so I will probably be buying those brands from now on instead of the cheapo stuff.

I use a Xikar Punch with Xikar fuel. Got it when I first started smoking cigars and it has never really occurred to me that I might need anything else. It's actually odd that I've kept up with it, given how many cutters I've gone through since then. Anytime I need a cutter I just start looking around in drawers and couch cushions and I'm bound to find one I "lost" months ago.
