Got my newest tattoo today. I think it turned out really good. The color on the legs will tone down to look more like a tan when it heals. Gonna put a Koi on the other side of my forearm. And a Japanese fan around the outside of her head. Trying to stay with a Japanese type theme for my left arm.

I've got a few, all have something relevant to my career choice.

I would say if you get one make sure its something that got some meaning to it and not something randomly picked. They also can be addictive!!!

I have/had 2. I've got the UV flames on my left forearm, and I've still got "Fidelitas" on my right wrist, but as it's my saluting arm, I was instructed to get it removed if I ever wanted a future with the Marines. It sucks, as I'm quite attached (Haha, punny). My mom agreed to get it for me 2 Christmases ago, and she even went with me, and watched (I was so proud of her) so I really like it. I've still got the original sketch from when I drew it up, so I'll probably have it re-done somewhere else. Anyways, here's the tattoos.

I have quite a few. I have a personal rule about not going below the watch line or above the collar line so I can dress up and be "respectable" when I need to be, but other than that, it's pretty much fair game for me.

A few really mean something to me, and a few were just for fun, but all of them tell a personal story and where I was in my life when I got it done.

Enjoy it, you only get one first! :ss

Best advice I can give, If you do not plan on getting more than just one tat, then don't get any at all. they are addicting.

Research shops and artists

Do not get anyone's name unless they are:

#1. Your kids
#2. Dead

Have the artist draw a completely original piece just for you OR at the very least, choose something that will be rare and unique and truly "art".

Here are a few of mine:

Excellent! The ribs are a good place to start because they definitely give you a good idea of the pain level of tats. After getting that done you'll have no probs getting them in other places :)

Then Lucky's advice is perfect. If you choose a location that is easily covered by clothing, you should be fine. Make sure the tattoo means something to you, research your artists to find a talented one, and you shouldn't ever need it removed. I was taking a risk by getting mine on my wrist, and I knew that. Part of me is actually happy that I get to experience something that most don't ever go through. I don't regret the tattoo, or that it has to be removed, and I do intend to get it re-done somewhere else. But the most valuable advice I've seen in this thread is that if you only want one, don't get it. I don't know anybody who has only one tattoo and doesn't want anymore. It is absolutely the most addictive thing I've ever experienced, and most people with tattoos will tell you the same thing.

Who's the artist? I'm taking my little sister to get her first tattoo for her 18th birthday next October, and I'll be getting my next. We're going to Slave to the Needle in Seattle. OK, so it's just me then?

I'll be the voice of reason. I got a tat when I was 17, 1972. I was stoned...not just then, but all the time. My buddy and I went to the shop. He got a zig-zag man, I got a mj flower top. I have regretted it for about 30 years.

First, lifestyle changes. The values you have now, when expressed permanently and visually, may be vastly different than 5, 10 or 20 years down the road.

Second, after about 10 years they look like sh*t. after 20 years they look like mostly grey and black blobs. Yeah, I know you can get 'em touched up...blah, blah, blah.

Third, when you start advancing in your career, and the vast majority of people do, they are not and advertisement for "stability" or "good decision maker". Furthermore, they do not give you the look that screams "hire me" unless you're trying to get a job as a bouncer or a roadie. They look, well...stooooopid.

Go ahead, let the flogging begin, it's just my personal opinion and advice.

LasciviousXXX
11-17-2008, 01:37 PM
Yeah its just you then :)

1st lifestyle changes, get something that means something to you when you get it. I look at tattoos as sign-posts for where I've been in my life and what's been important to me, that way no matter what I get I have no regrets as it meant something to me at that point in my life.

2nd, my wife has tattoos more than 20 years old and they look just fine. Go to a good reputable artist who uses quality ink and don't go drunk or stoned.
http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o278/LasciviousXXX/echo1-1-1.jpg

3rd, I wear a shirt and tie to work and have full sleeves. Whenever I'm not at work I go with short sleeves all the time but in the business professional world there's aboslutely no reason that you can't have tattoos.

So I definitely respect your reasoning for you regretting your tats but I will respectfully disagree with all of your points. I don't believe tattoos look stupid at all. I think that if you get quality tattoos it will look just that... high quality.

Get tattoos that are high quality by a professional artist, don't go stoned or drunk, make a logical informed decision and have it be something with meaning and you'll never regret your tattoos.

I agree 100% I have one that is 21 years old and looks almost as good as the day I got it. Both :) done stone cold sober, can be covered as I work in the "business" world, and have personal meaning to me. Would have more, but teh need for them to be "personal" keeps me from the frivolous ones. Right now I am looking for a local artist that can do portrait of my parents...

I love portrait work!

I definitely agree, and its good to keep in mind that the quality of tattoo ink has changed drastically since 30 years ago. While Back in the day the quality of the ink was sketchy and looks bad after a bit, current tattoo ink is exceptional quality and looks very fresh and vibrant even after many years. I have to say that in my experience KuroSumi and Starbrite inks are the best and brightest with SkinCandy running a close third.

I totally agree. Now Im not that old so I dont have any that are 20+ years old. All of my tats mean something to me. Also if you were to pass me on the street you would have no idea i have any tattoos. If you work, you have to think about the placement. (If you cant easily cover them with longsleeves) I dont think tattoos are stupid at all. Its personal..... it tells your story!

I've never heard of this...can you explain more about the ink?

http://www.crazychameleon.net/black-light-tattoo-ink.html

It's one of 18 UV reactive colors. The others all actually have a color to them, that when healed, simply looks like a faded, or slightly pastel color. but under UV they pop. The one he used for mine is a "white" ink, but truly it's colorless. The only thing you see on my arm is scar tissue, and with most people you can't even see that, but my dad's Cuban, and so I tan and show scars easier than most.

I've already got one planned for if/when I get into the Marines, but not a day sooner lol. I don't have any NAVY ideas, but figure out what you want to get, and mull it over for a month or 3. Think about what color(s) you may want to use, where, how big, style etc. Make sure that by the time you get it, there isn't anything you feel like you can improve on. I feel like that's the best advice I could give anybody on any tattoo. What do you want to do in the NAVY? One of my best friends from high school just got through Naval OCS. I have three tats. One on each leg and one on my back. Most of the time I forget that I have them. They are small and you can't really see them unless I have a swimsuit on. My first one is 12 years old and it still looks great. When I got my first one I said that was it and since I have gotten two more. My advice is make sure it is something that you can live with the rest of your life.

the inks that are used today are completely different than back in the day. major advancement in the ink field.

never get a tattoo when your drunk.

never get a tattoo you just thought up. (i thought aboot my sleeve for 10 years before i went for it. i made sure it was something i wanted. there are alot of tattoos that i wanted back in the day that i would kill myself if i had them on me now!!). think about it,think about it and think about it..

your tattoo should look the way it did from day one if:

your artists is good. do research on your artist. check all of his work. most importantly, find a tattoo on someone that he did years ago. see how it looks now.

if you take care of your tattoo for the week following when it got done. use A&D ointment. IMO, don't use any of that crap goo they try to sell you at some tattoo shops. it's crap. it may work a bit but every tat artists i know uses A&D on themselves. i have used it on all of my tatts, i have some that are 6 years old that look like i got them done yesterday.

skin care for life!! sun ruins tattoos. use sunblock always when you are in the sun (on the tatto). i use SP 50 if i go to the beach. it will leave any skin you put it on white, but your tatto will look good.

;)

the times are also different now. tattoos aren't as looked down apon as they were even ten years ago. i have seen CEO's of major companies with full sleeves and all. you should make sure you can cover it up when need be though. example = work. don't put tattoos on your face, neck or hands. i have a sleeve but it can be fully covered with a suit and a nice watch. you would never know i had them unless i showed you.
even though they are excepted more, in a real business setting, they should be covered. you can enjoy them the moment you get off.

but in the world in general today, tattoos are more excepted for sure.

I freakin' LIVE in sunscreen as well. Neutrogena makes an SPF 85 that is awesome. Goes on well and doesn't leave you with that white-out look. It doesn't matter where I go I'm always lathered up. Great piece of advice, use sunscreeen on tattoos that will see a lot of sun exposure.

Here's what I found for the Navy
6. TATTOOS/BODY ART/BRANDS. Three Criteria will be used to determine whether tattoos/body art/brands are permitted for Navy personnel while wearing civilian clothing: content, location and cosmetic.

a. Content. Tattoos/body art/brands located anywhere on the body that are prejudicial to good order, discipline, and morale or are of a nature to bring discredit upon the naval service are prohibited. For example, tattoos/body art/brands that are obscene, sexually explicit, and or advocate discrimination based on sex, race, religion, ethnic, or national origin are prohibited. In addition, tattoos/body art/brands that symbolize affiliation with gangs, supremacist or extremist groups, or advocate illegal drug use are prohibited.
b. Location. No tattoos/body art/brands on the head, face, neck, or scalp. The neck area for purposes of this regulation is any portion visible when wearing a crew neck T-shirt or open collar uniform shirt. In addition, otherwise permissible tattoos/body art/brands on the torso area of the body shall not be visible through white uniform clothing.
c. Cosmetic. This regulation does not prohibit cosmetic tattooing to correct medical conditions requiring such treatment. For the purpose of this regulation, cosmetic tattooing refers to medical or surgical procedures conducted by licensed, qualified medical personnel.

so I guess as long as a t-shirt would cover it, and it's not a swastika (sp) I think I'll be ok

I've thought about the Compass Rose, nautical star, stuff like that. Anyone with tattoo experience have any ideas?

I don't suggest getting a Navy tat before joining up. If I were you I'd just wait till after you join/complete boot camp.

I've seen many not make it into the Marines due to tats and their location or so called meanings.

I have to say I regret getting the tattoo's I got. Think it threw before getting one.Thats my:2

:tpd:... on pretty much everything

I should buy stock in SPF companies LOL

i GOT to get me some of that SPF 85!!! never even seen it around here. does it come in a stick as well?
i try to get the spf 50 roll on stick. it is like a glue stick(ones in school) and you can put it exactly on the tattoo only, instead of having to try to get the liquid to NOT run all over everything else. i have had some funny mishaps with the regular liquid like sunscreen. lol
i went into a stand up tanning bed once and i used spf 50 sunscreen on the tattoo under my arm (on my bicep). well i got tired of holding my arms up and i put them to my side....................i had a big ass white mark on my side for almost a freakin year (the sunscreen got on my side from my bicep)!! hahahaha it looked so funny.

This stuff is awesome. I really should buy stock in this company I use so much of it. It can usually be found in like a Wal-Mart or Target or CVS or something. Not greasy at all and it doesn't look like you are wearing sunscreen.

That's where I'd get tattoos for my kids, if I had any. Somewhere close to the heart. Probably on one of my pecs. I don't know if I'd like a sternum tattoo, but something a little off-center like the chest would be my first pick of locations for that type of tattoo.

Can't believe I haven't posted mine yet. Well, I have 4 so far. #5 will be coming on Apr. 9th (it will be the Serbian Coat of Arms, in tribute to my mom).

For me as someone else stated, my ink represent checkpoints in my life. Things that are important to me, and significant times. I think that as long as the ink has some sort of meaning to you, then go for it, but you do have to think it through before you do it. They aren't cheap, and it's even more expensive to get them removed. FInd a quality artist...key work ARTIST. You see a lot more people who have some sort of art background doing tattoos, and I feel that it has really improved the quality of the pieces I see people getting.

That being said, here are mine...

Great ink, Wanger!!

Obviously, it's 3 snakes intertwined. LOL I wish I could say it's an original design, but it was taken from the logo of some guys I know who breed snakes up in Washington. I had the artist add the shading and the green. For me, it represents the interconnection of facets of my life...myself, my family, and my work.

Each one of my tatts has a specific meaning to me. The transformation of the 2 on my arm into a half sleeve will have meaning, too...a rebirth, making the old new again, and I want to include a green tree python in it.

My next one will have the most meaning of all of them for me. It's going to be the Serbian coat of Arms, as a memorial to my mother. She came here from there alone when she was 16, and didn't speak any English when she got here. She passed away April 17, 2007. Her birthday would have been this past Monday, so these few weeks will always be a bit rough on me, and I am glad that I'm getting my memorial to her within that time period.

Best way to remember Mom, IMO. I did a similar tribute to my mom and, as corny as it sounds, it always makes me smile when I think of her. Thoughts and prayers to you in this difficult time (it always is hard no matter how many years since they are no longer there reminding you to eat, sit up straight, etc.)

My biggest problem is the lack of good artists in Newfoundland and the fact that there are no good artists in Nunavut (to my knowledge)

I got my first tattoo 20 years ago and it was ok, small spider on my chest.

Then I wanted a band of lizards around my right arm, and brother I wanted it NOW! Ended up at shady McShady's tattoo place...

Tattoo guy - Well I don't have the flash for lizards, so how about dragonflys?
Stupid me - You can do it right NOW
Tattoo guy - oh hells ya, just let me finish this drink...

Lets just say, I have wanted more work done... but until I find someone who does GOOD work... I am waiting.

We do have some GREAT artists in Newfoundland don't get me wrong but the demand is too high now and the wait lists are months if not years. Add the fact that I am only home for the summer.... you get my point.

Someday soon though!!

We do have some GREAT artists in Newfoundland don't get me wrong but the demand is too high now and the wait lists are months if not years. Add the fact that I am only home for the summer.... you get my point.

Someday soon though!!

If you come out to California I'd be more than happy to set you up with one of my artists in Santa Barbara, they're all top notch :)

Pretty erroneous on your part.

Maybe because your post reads like tattoos are permanent and therefore bad?

Hopefully this explains it better and then I can bow out.

Never said tattoos are bad. You are the one saying I said that.
I happen to like tattoos.
I commented on THAT particular tattoo. I am awed that someone would pay such homage to a criminal, murderer, atrocious person on their body, in a manner so permanent and be so proud to display it.

However, it is his body and his right to do with as he pleases and as such, so it is.

It goes back to the fact that most people have no idea what che stood for and what he actually did.

Most people consider him a sign of rebellion and fighting authority. I doubt most people realize the coward he was.

The tattoo does look well done though.

i understand where you are comming from, his iconic image is plastered on nearly everything around the world, i understand che and what his fight was about regarding the Batista regime and here in ireland we have a similar situation with the british and their internment of the 6 counties in the north of the country, similar guerrilla tactics are still being used to liberate eire to this day.

I believe the we will have a 32county socialist country- tiocfaidh ar la

Me and my wife got tattoos in Jan for our one year wedding anniversary. I have been wanting one for a long time but had the find the right guy to do it. I wanted it hand drawn on my leg with no stencil. Found the right guy and set it up, he worked about 5 hours on me, 3 and a half doing ink work.

Well for me I just want a carp head in my underarm - lol. Here is some verbiage I found -

"In tattoo imagery, especially in combination with flowing water, it symbolizes much the same: courage, the ability to attain high goals, and overcoming life's difficulties." It is said that if the Koi can swim up and past the waterfalls at a point called Dragon Gate (on the Yellow River) it would be transformed into a dragon.

I personally like the Japanese symbolism and myths and think the Koi will compliment the Tiger. My Koi will be black and deep red. Not nearly as colorful as tx_tuff's Koi.

This is correct... I currently have a red dragon covering the entire left side of my chest and some of my back and the right side is reserved for a Koi jumping the Dragons Gate.

There will be more to come... Because I believe in the saying "WHAT YOU DO FOR ONE YOU DO FOR EM ALL..."

We plan on having 3 kids... My plans for #2 is the right shoulder blade...

Plan for #3 is lower center of my back (yea yea yea... "tramp stamp")

(kids #2 and #3 I plan on doing the same style... Footprints, Name, and DOB) I may end up encorperating a symble into each to make them a little different...

Then I plan on doing a piece connecting them all somehow and maybe incorperating my wife in it as well ( it all depends on how we are getting along then... ;-) )

I plan to get another one when I hit my 1 year of sobriety 3/15/11, perhaps incorporated with the current one. I'd like to have the current one re-inked or modified at the same time.

This is why my Koi is swimming up (as in up the yellow river). You will see some people get them swimming downward, but everybody does their own thing.

My Koi is orange and white with green eyes for a reason. The orange and white is because my girl (next Sat will be 9) still sleeps with a large Nemo fish I won for her at a carnival when she was 2. The green eyes is because my boy has green eyes, so have them both covered with the fish. Also have two cherry blossoms, one for her and one for him.

Yeah I want one for my other leg, but also want to finish the leg I started. Oh well I don't think I'm going away anytime soon so I have time.

You have added a lot since the first part of the tattoo, I like it! So how much more are you doing to it?

I need to color in the characters, and then I'm going to start on the back of my leg. I'm also going to have him put more orange in the yellow at the bottom. I'm boy a fan of how bright the yellow is

The yellow is a lot brighter then the rest of the tattoo, some orange in it should balance it out nice.

I started my first one back in feb. I had something in mind, and the guy I met thankfully was a honest and upfront artist that basically said, yeah its cool, but wouldnt really work right and look good on your arm. So he offered to draw me up something after asking me what all i was into so he came up with this. For 24yrs old, he's really good and is building a great rep in this area since he moved here trying to turn his life around.

He did this in about 2.5 hours of work, but we got another 3 or so in shading and all he wants to do. Its a cross of course, he went real heavy on it since he wants it to be the main focal point and stand out the most. Has my son and daughters name in it, and a cross hair in the middle, since I do a fair amount of shooting. The outside is a deer antler, sorta doesnt look like it now but will on the final and forming the circle is a light path that has deer tracks in it. I am so itching to go get this finished just havent had the spare funds yet to do it.

Also attached is a tat he did for my wife on her leg. This pic was right after it was done, he spent 4 hours doing this and goes into amazing detail. If you play warcraft you'll prob reconize it.

Dang I type alot :sl

Nope. It's actually a symbol of one of my addictions. Triathlons. Swim, bike, run baby! :D

My next race is a half ironman on July 24th. :p

I don't currently have any tattoos, however I do draw them for friends.

This is a tattoo I drew for a coworker during a meeting:

My left arm is sleeved from the shoulder to the wrist with a Celtic/Tribal type design and a dragon on the forearm that you cant see. I have well over 20 hours into it so far and a friend of my wifes is drawing up an Evil Dead type sleeve for my right leg. Will try to get a better pic later. I did a couple 6 hour sessions and a couple 4 hour sessions to get it were its at now.
