Pretty sweet brother...dont know if I would have the ability to sit through all that!! How many sessions has it been to get to this point???

This has been about 5 sittings (I lost count) each about 3 hours long. That's about all I'm good for on the back at one time. I'm thinking one more good session and it should be done. Then I need to figure out what's next. :D

I can't decide if I want something on my back or not, I like to look at my tats and enjoy them, can't do that with a back piece, but your's is badass!

It's funny you say that, as I hadn't given it much thought until after I started getting it. Too late to turn back at that point. :D
I already told my artist that once this one is complete, we're finishing the sleeve down to the wrist. I guess I'll have to get used to wearing long sleeved shirts at work.

Yeah I haven't made that commitment yet, the summers here are BRUTAL and I'm a big boy, so I keep telling myself when I retire is when I will get the full sleeve.

Honestly I am a really bad judge for pain when it comes to tattoos... I fall asleep through most of my sessions. My worst area it the outside of my forearm which makes no sense at all anatomically but its the only place where I even thought "ouch". I have another 3/4 sleeve on the right arm and its the same story, even the elbows are fully colored in and it was nothing compared to the outside of the forearm.

Those are some really nice peices Trace63. My buddy Daniel Jones has done some guest spots up at Off the Map and got a sleeve done by Nick Baxter (I dont know if he works there anymore though) and we know Nate Beavers pretty well. My wife and buddy own a shop here in Roanoke VA so I try to keep up on all the tattoo biz news. Heres a few shots from my (in progress) right arm sleeve. Got this added around an old existing tattoo while we were in Florida last month:
https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/270037_1832824463394_1323882237_31494880_736930_n. jpg
Found the artist who did the tribal and diamond and had him add some more touches, this was done about a month ago:
https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn1/c0.149.403.403/p403x403/561629_3399704594418_720027743_n.jpg
And this is new ink I just got today..had a smaller portrait of Jesus from the Passion of the Christ DVD cover, I had a local guy re-do it and put his unique take on it, it's even bigger than it looks, it goes up my shoulder and onto my back:

Start of my sleeve. This is only the forearm portion, after 5 hours of work. Lot of details involved. On the 14th I start work on the top half.
My Wife is also getting a half sleeve from the same artist (Matt Myrdal) with Pino Bros in Cambridge, MA. More pics to come. Probably about 3 more 8 hour sessions.

I saw a really awful tattoo last night at the Y. A gal was working out in front of me with a tank top on, less than 10 feet away, and has a tattoo about 3 inches across on her right shoulder. I was on a recumbent cycle behind her and took almost 10 minutes trying to discern what it was. Bluish/angled/splotch/not quite parallelogram/branches/flag/birthmark??????
Nope, it turned out when she walked in front of me that it was just a horribly done, bled out, poorly colored, structured, and designed, conceptualized and completed butterfly. I was disappointed and expected so very much more. To put a tatt where you cannot see it shows that it is not for your pleasure or view, right? For those looking upon it as a "facet of your personality" or some such?
Beautiful, fit, happy gal. Ugly as fnck crappy tatt. Quite a shame, since perhaps she was expecting the performance of the artist to accentuate her beauty or have a work of art on her shoulder instead of denigrating it.

Thanks guys. We started it last September. Then had to take a break from December to March because I wasn't employed. It was originally going to be black and white with heavy shading. We were almost done with that, and then I decided that it had to be color after seeing his work on my Wife's half sleeve. That added a lot of time, but I'm so happy I went with color. This guy is the best in Boston.
I love the Ocean, and it's traditions. My Dad was a GM1 in the Coast Guard, and I was born at Coast Guard boot camp when our family was stationed there. The CG is in my blood. I'm terrified of Sharks, so I wanted the Kraken to be winning the fight. The Lighthouse and Storms are about not losing your bearing when **** hits the fan, which applies to life right now ironically. I just showed him pictures of what I wanted, and he drew the design up.
The Artist is moving to Hawaii, and he said if I ever want work done that I can stay at his house with him and his Wife for a visit. His work is top notch.

Is there a back story to your tattoo? When I first saw it, I thought of Mexican flag, but that image is used in several stories.
It's gonna be a 2nd amendment revolutionary war type theme for the sleeve. Tattoo artist used this as a version of the gadsen flag type thing. Eagle is the .gov snake is the people. Don't tread on me and all. Eagle doesn't have the snake by the feet. They're fighting basically.
Being new to the tattoo world, what is a good % to tip?
it varies, take into consideration of time compared to price, quality of the work. if I was charged a fair price and loved the work I would do the 10-20%. I got my artist a new machine after doing my leg (26 hours of work)

To me it depends. The artist the wife and I used for our most recent is a real great guy and amazing artist. Wife is a great tipper and tipped $100 on a $200 tattoo. But he gave her a GREAT price.
I tipped 80 when he did mine for $280.
