This game is very addicting, a bit nerdy but I can look past that.
I love architecture and enjoy trying to build things.

Yes, I give it a 6 out of 10 in the fun department but it has something special about it that keeps you wanting more. The low res graphics just work for the game play. My favorite part is just building things but there is much more you can do.

It's kind of like advanced legos meet RPG.
I don't like RPGs but I love this game.

There isn't really a predefined objective. It's very sandboxy. Playing locally doesn't require much of an internet connection (it "phones home" when you start up, but that seems to be it.)

However, in the last couple versions they started adding little rpg elements. There's XP now (so you can level, but it doesn't affect anything yet.) There are (currently empty) towns, mines and a couple fortresses kicking around. I think I read something about them introducing NPCs in 1.9 (which can't be too terribly far away.)

Though now that Skyrim's out :p

It is only in beta form currently but if you purchase the beta for cheap, you get the gaem for free upon release. It is a game with no real rules or directions. You can play it however you choose. You can explore amazing computer generated landscapes or mine for unique building materials, you can run around killing animals or hunt bad guys at night. You can design the look of your character, mine is batman with a ginat BS on my back. You can build anything you can imagine. You can collect objects and turn them into better objects or tools.

Best way to describe it is a free play low res addicting game!

Look at some videos online, to get a little feel for it.

I will even give you a diamond tool kit and some supplies to get started!

It is a survivor server currently, alot of people got bored and wanted some additional challenge so it was switched and reset. We have a nice little town so far with a nice train car system.

I Didn't update because I'm waiting for it to be secure for our server. If you update right away you can't get onto the minecraftaholics server until bukkitt is secure. Usually takes about a week.

I do have a question regarding the play in browser option. Is everything done in the browser? Does it download anything to your system? Thanks guys.

The In browser one will not DL anything to your system.

The browser uses local files stored in the folder (windows 7) \users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft where it stores your settings and world files. If you download the actual minecraft.exe it uses the same folder/world saves as you would if you were playing it in browser, the difference being that you're not using an active internet connection.

Ya know, I take it back. I created a new world and noticed a couple things (that may have been missing because I had a huge 1.7 world.)

Villages with NPCs (though they seem to do nothing.)
An awful lot more achievements (brewing o.O?)

minecraft... *sigh* oh how I have missed thee.

Longtime minecraft addict. I bought it in Alpha over a year ago, and I play off and on in concentrated spurts.

My friends and I used to run our own little private creative turned survival server. My pixel art and decoration designs always sucked, and I was only average at redstone... but I was a minecart wizard, I could build boosters and stations out of minecarts that defied the already warped laws of minecraft physics and would make your head spin... it was a thing of beauty... and then notch re-wrote the minecarts around the same time my friends started getting bored with their server.

I moved on to a TRUE survival ANARCHY server, public, complete with griefing etc. gone were the days of building... now I had a new system to learn - how to hide my things so nobody would steal them, living like a rat in a hole in cleverly camouflaged caves deep within the earth... I suppose you could say that I still play that server, although I am proud to say I've now been minecraft free for 3 months now. The last time i played in earnest was 1.7.3 ... before the combat mechanisms changed, and before enchantments!

Which is all a long winded way to say that I'm due to play it again... ASSUMING I don't buy SWTOR... So hello there. I'm a minecraft addict. And I may well see all of you on there soon :tu

this one claims to do the one thing the 'official' minecraft phone versions don't - allow you to play official minecraft maps from the desktop! now all it needs it online play :)

Doesn't sound like it, people can donate on the website but nobody does. Hardly anybody is on there anymore. You can send Hammy a PM on minecraftaholics inquiring about it. Tibs hosts the server and me and Hammy have paid for it so far. I am no longer contributing to the site or server and Hammy isn't either.

I've been swamped with school lately and haven't played much at all. I did just jump on a friends server and built a little house and mine since spring break started.

How much does a server cost? I had a friend who bought one and said it was $14 a month? He didn't keep up with it so we couldn't play on it anymore. Even if we set up a CA server for say, 20 ppl we could easily all chip in.

I've seen the trees on my friend's server, he planted a few around. Still haven't found an actual jungle in the game where there are a bunch of them.

That's pretty nuts...I almost think I should start a new map on my server and just let everybody have at it. The current map was created circa beta 1.7 I think.

Was trying to get a couple mods working this morning before I left for work, but no go. Will work on it some more tonight.

Alrighty, got the server up and running. I need anybody who is interested to PM me with their player name so I can add it to the whitelist and I'll reply back with the server IP (don't want to post it up publicly).

Started a brand new map, spawn point is right next to a great jungle biome and right on the beach, pretty cool. It's a blank slate, and I don't really have any specific care one way or another of where you can/can't to build. I guess if you want a particular area, just stake claim to it with something noticeable (out of place blocks, torches, a foundations, fence...whatever you like).

It is default survival, but I'll gladly turn on creative mode for whoever wants it.

I figure there will probably only be about a half a dozen of us on there, and it's only us and one of my RL friends, so we don't need to worry about griefers or the like.

SIDE NOTE: If anyone hasn't checked out the technic pack before, it's a pretty well done mod that adds a TON of stuff to the game. complicated machinery, block parts, all kinds of stuff. Worth playing around with :)

I'm waiting for Cartograph G to get a working 1.2 version up and I'll post a current map.

To begin with, everybody is in Survivor mode. If you would like to be creative, just let me know and I can change your game mode.

Really no rules to speak of. Just play nice (no worries on that, it's just us!), try not to build too close to each other so everybody has room to expand, and have fun :)

Let me just say that I'm severely impressed by all of you guys. You all are building some impressive structures!

Glad I could get a CA server running for us, it's been a lot of fun so far.

Also, I'd like to apologize for any slowness/chunk errors you experience. I've tried to optimize it best I can (my first go at it with just my friend was terrible), but I can't get rid of those chunk errors. If any of you have any ideas on that, let me know. As far as the slowness/lag, well...you can blame AT&T for that :p rofl

Had the game since Alpha, but I havn't played since 1.0 came out, so I am WAY outdated on all the new stuff.

Don't expect any big impressive buildings out of me, my architectural design skills are measure don the negative scale :tg.

After establishing a base, a mine, and some basic wealth, I might prioritize building an auto exp farm, get lvled, and crank out high level enchantments on some tools....

Server questions:
1) Have we been playing creative, or "mine it yourself if you want to build it"?
2) Daylight mod? seems like I could see quite well at night.... and didn't seem like the zombies were burning up in the daytime...
3) server? bukkit I assume?

Most of us play creative mode, some play survivor.
We have placed a lot of candles around to illuminate the surrounding areas, this may explain the ability to see at night? I have seen many mobs burning, however I have also seen many not burn, not sure really.
I don't think it is bukkit since bukkit takes for ever to create a stable version and we are playing the most current one, but not sure.

I havn't messed with minecarts since notch "broke" everything with the glitch physics update/fix. Starting to get the urge to work on minecarts or a mechanism...

It's major advantage is the ability to run a wide swath of plugins, from ones that tweak minor irritants, to drastically changing the game play completely to ones that grant or deny permissions and commands to groups of people. *MANY* public servers you see on the net are running bukkit, due to the latter.

I used to manage a bukkit server my friend set up in his house a while back (not enough bandwidth in my house), I'm quite familiar with op commands (now lets see how many I remember, lol)

BIG drawback to bukkit is that its developed by an outside group, which means they're always a step behind mojang for pumping out stable releases. Right now it's got beta releases out for 1.2.3 and the last (rock solid) stable release was 1.1

What it generally comes down to however is if it aint broke, don't bother fixin it!. unless you've got a burning desire to tinker with plugins, K.I.S.S. always works the easiest :) ... only reason I had asked was because of the chunk errors you mentioned - I had experienced them in bukkit before and was curious if there was link there. seems like the answer to that is no!

I too have shared that experience.

It SEEMS that they've gotten lately about that. There's still the recommended build, but apparently the "beta" builds are a little more ready for prime time than previously. But that's just from my reading, I havn't run a bukkit server since ~0.8

But again, why put ourselves through it if we don't really want it :tg, things look great :)

Looks like they're fixing some bugs in 1.2.5 including the villager overspawning issue:

"Fixed potential issue with village door detection (which could cause too many villagers)"

I guess when I update the server on Wednesday I'll turn villagers back on :)

Sorry gentlemen, we just had a severe thunderstorm with some tornado action, lots of power outages. I'm quite sure that the power at the house is out or went out, so the server will be down until I get home in a few hours.

Ran home to check on the casa and to let my pup inside (poor thing was outside, I didn't know it was going to storm this bad today) so I restarted the server. Should be up...unless the power goes out again :-P lol

Last night while I was working on some other stuff I hopped on your train to ride it all the way to the end. It was going on near 20-30 minutes when I realized I was just arriving back at your castle so a sheep or other animal must've bounced me back when I wasn't looking :(

Oh Brute I took my "Road to nowhere" just now and remembered that it is looped at the end so it send you back automatically. I did run into 3-4 animals on the way that stopped me. I gotta figure out what to build at the end of the track.

The road to nowhere really makes me miss the minecartmania mod. It allows you to setup quick teleports, makes fancy cart dispensers and deals with many of the other annoyances of the cart system.

Hey all, just thought I'd drop in this thread and see if any of you would be interested in doing something fun with the server. It seems to be kind of defunct and I haven't seen anybody logged in lately. If I could figure it out, would any of you be interested in rebooting (so to speak) the server fresh and putting some mods on it to change the experience up a bit?

I'm honestly not sure what mods, just kind of throwing it out there to see if you guys have any ideas or would be interested :)

The last few months I've been busy during the day, but my gaming has pretty much been dedicated to SWTOR and then D3. Now those have kind of waned and I started thinking about Minecraft again :) I think 1.4 should be coming out soon too, so some new features will be in it I'm sure.

Anyway, just let me know! Would be fun to get something going again to bring some interest back to the game.
