View Full Version : Smokin' in the winter

Now that the winter months are upon us (well, in this part of Canada anyway) I have lost the desire to spark up any decent sized cigars as my hands are numb by the time I finish. I am wondering how others change their cigar behaviour (given that they aren't "allowed" to smoke inside and where they live has four seasons) during the winter months. Smoke less often, switch to smaller cigars, put on a winter survival suit???

I smoke inside I actually have to smoke inside it is the only way I can cover up my father-in-laws honey dutchamaster smell. sounds like you need a smoken shed

Since this will be my first winter as a regular cigar smoker, I'm not sure how it will play out. Can't smoke inside, I do have a small barn, but any type of heater would be wasted as it's not insulated and wouldn't really hold any heat to speak of. I'm assuming my consumption is going to go way down and I'll likely have to go to the B&M to get any real enjoyment out of a stick.

A smoking shed would be ideal, but the closest thing I can come up with at this point is to set up the tent on the back deck. Not too sure I want to go down this root. Not very classy :D

Yeah this will be my first winter as well and I forsee my consumption going sown as well. Oh well, maybe it would be a good time to give my wallet a break :sad

Oh, maybe try one of those parabolic heat dishes. They dont heat the surrounding air but provide heat through direct radiative heat transfer. It would probably keep you warm while you were smoking with the chickens and cows :D

Luckily I have a room, albeit small, that is well ventilated that I can retreat to. One night this fall I decided to hit the porch anyways, and had anyone seen me it would've looked pretty funny. Thick hooded sweatshirt, sweatpants, wool socks and a blanket lol. Comfy, but probably looked like a homeless guy.

In a few weeks I'll probably be switching over completely from cigars to pipes since I'm allowed to smoke my pipes inside(roommates find it much less offensive). I've been getting every last bit of the slightly bearable warmth we still have right now. Pop a jacket on and throw my snuggie over my legs and grab a seat on the front porch to smoke a couple. Also I've been going out while its still light outside of recent(~5pm) as opposed to 7 or 8 when I used to head outside. I don't mind sitting out in the cold to smoke a stick or two, but the problem is in my hands. I absolutely cannot stand having cold hands. I'm extremely double jointed in all my fingers, so when it gets cold they'll start locking up and pop at all the knuckles when I try to bend them, so I just never fully extend them and end up walking around with claws for hands.

Yeah I retreat to the garage usually. It's not too much trouble to bring out a good space heater and just crack the garage door. I enjoy smoking outside more but unless I get a good fire going on my back patio the garage is usually where most of my winter smoking occurs.

Yep, Garage for me! I have a space heater or propane heater. I will, depending on the smoke, leave the door closed and open it from time to time.

I like to enjoy them in the garage over the balcony anyways, I have the TV set up.. with all my sh!t down there.. Either to relax or mess with something.

Wish I had a B&M to go to......

Some friends and I built our own Smoking Lounge. No B&M within 50 miles and Minnesota Winters are not nice places to hang around outside in. We all pooled some cash and bought an old building downtown and converted part of it to a fantastic man cave. I liked it so much, I turned it into my office. The rest of the building is a "Film Society". Installed a sound system, 12 foot screens and projectors. We show movies 2 to 3 times a week. Watched Green Lantern last night.

This is the Smoking Lounge.

Thread JACK!!

I've got a small consulting company. Pretty distributed. Just me locally. I help business become profitable. Finance/accounting/staffing/marketing. Working with a local TV outfit right now. With any luck, one of their shows will get picked up for syndication.

Last winter, girlfriend (SOTL) and I ran two electric space heaters on the back deck - one on either side of us. Not great, but as long as there was little wind, it worked pretty well. Looking into an propane patio heater this year - table-top version might be sufficient.

Another guy in the tropics here. I'll probably put the fire pit where the coffee table is outside, and light up out there. Puts out good heat.

I smoke a lot less in the cold months of Wisconsin. I have a good friend that I with who is "allowed" to smoke in doors. The local shops with lounges see a lot more of me as well.

I guess one of the few benefits of living in Phoenix is that I don't have any problems smoking outside during the winter. It get's chilly, but not that bad.

I don't think a firepit would do much good on my deck in the winter.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v139/357magnum/Metamora/SNC00494.jpg

I'm lucky enough to have a heated & ventilated sunroom we use for smoking in the winter. Sadly, I'm primarily a social smoker. Although I am in the market for a flat panel TV for that room. Who knows; after that I might just become one of those anti-social leave me alone smokers.

We had some people over the night before. There was a small amount of snow on the deck. We put the beer out there to keep cold. The next morning what was left was buried.

That was taken in the winter of 2010 when even the Keys felt the Bite of the Arctic. It was flipping cold in N. Fl. where I am!

Yeah that would be perfect for right about now when it's not too cold and not a whole lot of snow. What temp can it go down to before you are uncomfortable sitting in front of the heater?

I switch to smaller sticks in these months. I also smoke stuff that i will not feel bad about chucking of it gets to cold to stay outside. These smokes are typically cheaper and not my usual ones. I go to different B&M's for enjoyment of really good sticks.

I don't smoke as many random sticks.....but my regular "Dog Days", where me and a few friends get together to let the dogs run, while we smoke a cigar and have a few drinks, just moves. So now every Friday and Sunday, we go from the friends back yard, to his second garage, which has a wood burning stove in it....:tu

I haven't pulled the computer out there yet to find out. I'll let you know, I'm going to be doing homework out there this weekend. It will go faster if the Wi-Fi doesn't get there, cuz if it does I'll spend all my time on CA.

Last year we built an additional two car garage, which is insulated. This fall, very soon I'll be installing a 10,000 watt electric heater. I think it'll be a nice place to enjoy a smoke this winter.

I think i'm going to try and stock up on sticks during the winter, smoke inside when I can (B&M) and just hold out until spring. My supply of stogies is almost gone after a heavy smoking period, which started last spring and is just now slowing down. -(P

No B&M nearby for me. That means less cigars and usually smaller "dog-walk" length. I like Oliva G special G and the O petit perfecto for winter. Nica Libre Principe too. The G and Nica Libre especially are cheap enough that if I don't get to smoke the whole thing it's not so bad. Tat Havana VI angeles is a good size too.

I have a covered front porch and a Mr. Heater 3 burner propane heater that get me through the winter except when it's real windy and cold and then we head for the garage with the propane heater and turn on the exhaust fan.
