Hey guys,
I have just started rolling my own cigars, i was wondering if anyone else here was doing the same?
I have been ordering my tobacco from Leafonly.com and i have bought a couple of cigar molds from BLH industries in PA ( the make the molds for some big name cigar manufacturers)

I did a quick search and didnt find any post pertaining to this subject, and i'd like to get some discussion started on this new found hobby of mine.

That's too funny, me and SteelCityBoy (Ken) met up at a B&M tonight and were discussing this same idea. How have they come out? Post some pics please!!!

This is pretty cool. I would love to attempt at something like this, but I'm sure accessing quality tobacco in Canada is more of a hurdle than the US. I would love to see the process that you undergo to produce your product! Post some pics if you are willing!

when i buy from Leafonly, i buy the samples which are 1/4 lb and is plenty. good prices at 5-10$ per 1/4 lb

@blak Smyth- i have ordered some better wrappers, the ones i intended to use the first time had some larger veins. the mold in the picture is from JpRose in Ohio, it is a good hobbyist mold.

Pretty neat!

But I'll leave it to the experts. You know, the hot, young Nicaraguan women rolling the cigars on their nubile thighs....

That's how it's done, right? :sh

For 2 hours one day, one could bunch, bind and press the cigars, then spend a couple hours the next day wrapping them. The time is more spent in prep than wrapping.

The only costly amount to the DIY is the Mold. you can get some retired molds online or buy a new one like i did. I learned mostly from watching online. Also we have a shop in town that has a roller, and he has taught me a couple things.

I have less than 100$ invested and i have about 2lbs of tobacco right now, the mold, glue etc..

Very interesting that you posted this and I thank you. It reminded me of how and why I first got into the cigar world and found these forums learning about cigars. I originally was going to go this route and get tobacco from other places after I learned the different tastes origins etc but ended up with fear that the leaves i get may taste like dog rockets so then I decided to take it a step further and found a place to buy seeds grow it , build a place to ferment it and got stuck on where to hang it that would be climate controlled and no mold and a place same way to start the seedlings and first stage.
So I put in on hold thinking that with the cigars out there and the money I would pay for on leaves of same quantity of cigars yet better quality it may not be worth my while but I stayed somewhat unsatisfied holding on 2 dreams. So again I thank you this refreshed me. And I'm glad your enjoying yourself.

If you are just getting started you can also skip the mold and use news paper. Just bunch as you normally would but then wrap it in newspaper and twist the ends like a tootsie pop.

The original mold that I had used 5 bolts with wing nuts to tighten it down, the new mold will be compressed using weight, I am also looking into getting an old wine press or something along those lines.

Got a bid on a 20 ct perfecto mold, I also want to find a corona but 7 inch. What would be nice is to find a place I can get leaves similar to generals leaves or AVO but have a few blends that sound tasty written down. Only issue with that is what grade they are ? Would hate to roll up some turds and smoke them for me upcoming 10 yr sobriety in Feb. But I figurwe start with tobacco get good at rolling and make my way to lanceros and better baccy.

I'd be interested cause that minus a Ecuador sumatra as a binder was some of the blends and the leaves I was going to order and am curious on the taste. I do know however the blend would be different but am curious. I myself was waiting till I saved $140 before ordering it so this would be nice to do a review and sample before spending that sum.
My palate broad ranges so in a taste test it is open minded.

any extras that you get to keep can be PIF'd to wi hehe. Me personally, Don't like when orders get mixed up, lost or anything cause I usually end up feeling guilty that me nor the place of transaction didn't get what we paid for or sold. I don't want anyone in a transaction that deals with me feel lost out. Its hard to do business with someone if theres a bad taste in the mouth either way.

There should be several light, creative solutions for reinforcing the stick(s) for transport unless maybe you can secure some generic tubos for shooting samples around.

He mentioned that he wants to pay less than "$5.20" to ship samples. Some times bubble mailers are the way to go. Most of the time flat rate is where it's at, but not always.

I consider this a fair review, as it will help me make changes to how I store the cigars after rolling, and amount of time needed to rest the cigar, this thread is a learning tool for me and I hope others can chime in to help with issues I am having.

Thanks a lot Blak Smyth

Here is my attempt at a review Sunday, I will not post it because I don't think it would be a fair review.
It started out great but I had some real issues with the burn tunneling, I think maybe it was just too wet.
I think you are making a great cigar though, I was impresses with the professional construction and the taste I was experiencing prior to the burn issue.:tu
I would have loved to say all great things but I have to be honest with you so here is the review I was working on:

"Roxy H1 review
Woodsy prelight smell
Single cap very firm and even construction,
partially closed foot.

1/3
First draw was a bit tight but not too tight. Sweet smooth earthy flavor.
Semi sweet mild earthiness
Very light grey consistent ash.
Draw a bit harder than I prefer.
Cigar paired nicely with a cream soda.
At the end of the first third I ran into an unexpected issue, I couldn't get any smoke output even after inserting a draw tool.
I removed all the ash to find the cigar had tunneled in the center.
I cut the end of the cigar down and relit, it began to tunnel again.
I think the cigar was too wet still.
The head of the cigar was quit moist, more so than I had seen before.
I think the cigar just needed more rest. The flavors where great for a mild cigar with lots of creamy smooth earthy flavors.

I see a lot of potential but just didn't get to enjoy the stick due to the burn issue."

Thanks for giving me a chance to review the product, I wish it had been a better experience, but the good news is the flavors where there and the look was beautiful! Good luck in continuing this!

where did you learn about blending the cigars? I'm wanting to start doing this and figure I should start there.

Blending I started doing blindly, there are a limited number of leafs that you can purchase from leafonly,
I start with the Dominican seco and ligero, and I add in dried Havana 7 and some of the darker richer fronto leaves. The mos important thing I have learned is that any filler that is used has to be as close to dry as possible, otherwise it will take a long while to even out.

I am learning blending by doing small batches at a time.
More ligero= stronger
More seco= milder

Re: Taste Test
I did the review at work , I have pics that I could upload later but here is the review.

I paired off this cigar with a pot containing a Brazilian,Tazmanian blend that I home roasted with a splash of Irish Cream creamer.
This stick sat 15 days in my coolidor that is kept at a 61 humidity.
Prelight this stick was firm 3 veins appearing on wrapper 1 was a thick juicy one. The prelight aroma was fantastic a lil musty but had a great smell indeed. Was a firm stick with a hollow part on one of the sides near last 1/4.
Upon Light I found this blend easy lighting with thick white smoke coming out. It was so smooth at first I couldn't believe there was that much smoke in my mouth. It was windy outside so I had fear that it may make a run. White ringed ash now big greyish white smoke. Something in this is teasing my full body pallet. Now I enjoy mild cigars medium etc but theres something growing in the flavors each drag that tickles my curiosity and eager anticipation. Mild to medium the first 1/4.
Big smokey draws into the half. still haven't had to ash yet and still firm. Ash fell off a little under the half. I do notice a small hollow spot inside the ash as i look straight down into the cherry in a side of it. Thinking what I could compare this taste to but nothing comes to mind. Nice mellow taste great mild light medium with hint of teasing spice.
Last 1/4 really developed into a flavor that was quite exotic that is quite pleasing to the pallet. Medium flavor, great smell. Hollow side is fine and still a great burn and is smoking great. Wrapper came undone in 1 area in last 1/4 but not bad enuff that it unravelelled . No repair work needed at all on this stick during burning it up to the nub. Clients at work enjoyed the aroma as I sat and enjoyed the stick just teasing their curiosity.
My final concensus on this stick was I loved the blend, burn and what not. it was a hair under my pallet wants tonight for a full body but as a mild light medium it was quite enjoyable and this version I would not change due to the fact its nice having certain sticks for certain times of cravings and wants and I find myself thinking i'd put this stick in rotation and I have some mild/medium friends that don't partake much but would enjoy the complexity and light smooth flavor of this stick. 1 thing I can say is some parts of the flavor stayed the same but other parts changed throughout the burn.
Thank you again for the chance to try this creation, keep up the good work.

Thanks a lot. appreciate the help. I will look into the bunching portion of my rolling to make sure the dead spots (hallow spaces) are minimized.

Thanks Brian,

Initial Thoughts: The wrapper has some visible veins and is applied very well. Overall the stick looks well constructed, with only a few minor soft spots.

http://www.stogiesnbrews.com/wp-content/photos/cigars/roxy/01sm.jpg

First Third: The pre-draw brings notes of cut hay and a little vanilla. After the light the first few draws bring notes of hay, roasted nuts, and some light pepper. After it settles down there are some notes of buttered toast and some earthy, woodsy notes that I’m having trouble pinning down. Some slightly sweet caramel notes are mixing in nicely with some light black pepper notes. The draw is fantastic, not too loose and not too tight, and the burn is very good too, only needing one touch up (which I’m not entirely sure wasn’t my fault when I lit the cigar). The ash is a light grey color and is a little flaky, so it only holds to about a half an inch.

http://www.stogiesnbrews.com/wp-content/photos/cigars/roxy/02sm.jpg

Second Third: Starting into the second third the cigar has really calmed down and is really starting to shine. The buttered toast, sweet caramel, and pepper notes are still hanging around. The mild and creamy nature of the Dominican filler really makes this cigar.

http://www.stogiesnbrews.com/wp-content/photos/cigars/roxy/03sm.jpg

Final Third: Starting in on the final third it’s calmed down a bit. More toasted almonds and sweet cream than anything else. It’s stayed mild and smooth throughout the cigar, which I’m impressed with since a lot of retail cigars don’t do that. Finishing the cigar with no bitter notes and the sweet, creamy smoke really leaves a good impression overall.

http://www.stogiesnbrews.com/wp-content/photos/cigars/roxy/04sm.jpg

Total Smoking time: 1:05

Final Thoughts: I enjoyed this cigar, a lot actually. Andrew’s rolling skills were impressive, as was his choice of tobacco blend. I'm ready to go out and buy some of my own tobacco to try my hand at this

so as far as applying the wrapper, I use a stainless tray, because it is easier to cut on, and if you lightly mist the outside of the wrapper, it sticks well to the stainless ( a trick i found on youtube of Sam Leccia rolling a nub)
http://i781.photobucket.com/albums/yy93/vorand58/IMG_0985.jpg

you always want to start at the tip of the leaf, with veins facing up.
http://i781.photobucket.com/albums/yy93/vorand58/IMG_0986.jpg

Remove a thin strip of the outer edge of the leaf, this is the edge that shows!
http://i781.photobucket.com/albums/yy93/vorand58/IMG_0987.jpg

Then remove a larger section of the inner edge, it does not show, and contains the bulk of the veins.
http://i781.photobucket.com/albums/yy93/vorand58/IMG_0988.jpg

BlkDrew
11-25-2011, 03:30 PM
I then bring it up to a tail, applying glue to the wrapper on the last 1/2 inch before the tip. One thing i did not show is that i cut a small flag from a scrap piece and go around the last 1/2 inch again, making a triple cap.
http://i781.photobucket.com/albums/yy93/vorand58/IMG_0989.jpg

I then "Roll" the cigar, you can either use the Cheveta, or a piece of cedar like i have. this helps flatten out any veins that are really sticking out.
http://i781.photobucket.com/albums/yy93/vorand58/IMG_0990.jpg

Cap it, i use a 3/4 inch copper union that has been sharpened,
http://i781.photobucket.com/albums/yy93/vorand58/IMG_0991.jpg

And cut the foot.... now youre done.

you wont get the best press that way. if you look at my mold the top fits into the bottom, compressing the cigar and making it perfectly round. I had originally ordered one from JP Rose in ohio, if you see one of my first pictures, that was one that was drilled between two boards, and it did alright for the first 3 cigars, then i decided to go the other way.

If you look on ebay there are a lot of ones for sale, just search cigar mold, im sure you could find one in the 30$ range.:tu

Fivers will be 25 shipped in the small flat rate box. How does that sound?

Put me down for the 1st 5'er of the Maduro wrapped Dominican---Robustos????

Andrew,

I just got caught up on the entire thread and can tell you that you are doing an excellent job with this! It is such a cool hobby and it gives other BOTL a chance to see an up close and personal side of what goes into making a cigar.

You are really doing a great job and I just wanted to say thanks for a great thread and all the work that you are doing to share your hobby with us!

I will certainly be following your progress moving forward. :tu

I smoked one the the Dominican ones while hanging out with Drew yesterday... I actually really liked it a lot. I had one when he first started rolling them and found it to lack flavor, this one yesterday was really good though.

(and I'm not just saying it because he's local or because I know him... I'd be honest about that).

just by them smell of this shipment of Dominican fillers, I can tell this will be a tasty smoke.
This is how i get my filler, stacked- somewhat moist, which is why i have to let them sit and rest so long after rolling
http://i781.photobucket.com/albums/yy93/vorand58/IMG_1034.jpg

And i just use a rough leaf for the binder. Thick leaves work better because they wont tear. but you could also use two thinner leaves.

and this is how i leave the first batch of maduros... for today

Thanks so much for letting us all tag along on your journey. I don't want to jinx you, but I got to ask... have you seen any beetles or beetle eggs? I don't know the method by which they store or fumigate the whole leaves from leafonly. Do you think giving them a sleep in the freezer is a good thing? I mean does it look like the leaves would dry out too easily?
