Let me just start off by saying.... Rolling a maduro is very difficult, due to the fact that the leaf is velvety soft, and can tear at any given time... luckily with a lot of patience, I was able to roll 10 using 10 wrapper leaves. hydration is very important with these leaves.
http://i781.photobucket.com/albums/yy93/vorand58/IMG_1038.jpg

also there are a lot of darker tobacco juices, which can stain your hands...
http://i781.photobucket.com/albums/yy93/vorand58/IMG_1041.jpg

and finally, i have 12 but i rolled 10 today.

Some CT shade and Havan Prime are for sale in the WTS/T

so.. if anyone would like to know, I will be getting a second mold to do a 42x5, It will save me on filler, and not everyone likes a Robusto.

for the next mini batch, I am using the same Dominican blend, but with a maduro binder and maduro wrapper.... guess you could call it a "double maduro" :ss

Andrew, I really love what you are doing with the leaf.:dr I can't wait to try some; I plan on smoking one ROTT and letting the others rest for awhile maybe 6 months....if they last that long.:D

Curious on something??? Is there any reason you never got involved in the Newbie sampler trade? You have been a member here since Dec 2009 and really don't have any trader feedback other then the PIF's you have done recently. Just my curiosity running rampage here. No harm and no foul intended.:)

i joined in 2009, but i really didn't visit the site much. After i thought about rolling my own I was looking through different forums to see if anyone else was, then i remembered that i was a member here, and i started posting my progress. I honestly would like to do the newbie sampler trade, If i still can? I guess i just didn't know how to go about it.

One more question if I may. What type of pectin are you using?

I am using a simple starch, used primarily to thicken liquids. no taste, no smell, super sticky in concentration.

I would like to find what they use in factories, but hard to find. I have looked a sur Jell fruit pectin, but it contains citric acid, which gives it a bitter taste

My fiver that I picked up on the WTS thread arrived yesterday. I'll try one this weekend, but the others will get some proper rest. First observation is that the construction is outstanding; much better than I expected. You seemed to have mastered this very quickly :tu :tu

And they smell great; can't wait to fire one up on Saturday!

You have really inspired me. I am getting some materials together and should have my first batch in a couple of weeks.

That being said, I did some research and it seems that Gum Arabic is what the Cuban Torcedore's use.

So I finally got around to trying the Maduro Roxy that Andrew generously sent for me to sample.....now I am not a reviewer, so I will do my best.
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d64/irratebass/Cigars/DSCF9100.jpg

First off the construction of the stick is very well put together, there were some noticeable veins, but not overpowering. When I pinched it, it snapped back and felt good in my hand quite a good looking stick.

I could not help but smell her I smelled barnyard aromas, and I noticed that I have not smelled a cigar that smelled this good....sure I have had some great smelling cigars, but there was just something about this....it was almost intoxicating and this is a good thing.

Onto the burns, it burned slowly...not a lot of smoke, and I think I only had to relight one time during the whole 1 hour and 30 or so mins of smoking.

While smoking I noticed peanuts, chocolate, maybe some coffee (only hints though) It was not an overpowering smoke and the closet comparison would be the Drew Estate Undercrown....if you haven't had that then I can't help you.

http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d64/irratebass/Cigars/DSCF9101.jpg

I had this paired with some Bacardi Gold Rum they went great together, I also had some grapes (purple seedless) in the process (I was at a party) and they did not take away from the enjoyment of the stick.

I would def buy a box of these and would love to try them after they have rested for a year.

Thank you again Andrew for letting me try it, I really appreciate it you really have something here and I look forward to trying your other wrappers as well. Keep it up brother.

Rats- I'm looking for a 49, first and foremost. Thank you, again, though.

I presume the listed sizes describe a finished (wrapped) cigar made with the mold and not the diameter of only the "bindered" bunch that comes out of the mold. Do you know if that's true?

I just purchased some Maduro wrappers, so i will have a Dominican filled with a maduro wrapper shortly.

I have taken into consideration the sale of Roxy cigars, as it is difficult to sell them not having the proper licenses, I figure i will sell the Cigar bands only, and the "tobacco is not for consumption"

Fivers will be 25 shipped in the small flat rate box. How does that sound?

If I'm not using them I keep them dry. I remoisten them 2 days before use.
I keep the filler on the dryer side to begin with.
If your not going to use it immediately, let it dry out.

I also buy what I plan on using, I keep a low inventory.

Hope that helped.

So i finally got my last shipment of Maduro Wrappers.... Good thing is Leaf Only was nice enough to charge me a couple extra $$ to have the leaves pre-opened, which means less processing time for me, and less tears in the leaf due to me being in a hurry.

Here is a pic, and for all of you that like the smell of the Roxy's, it smells 10 times better to burry your nose in this pile.

Pic is big, gives more detail

How much and where do you use pectin on the wrapper?

This looks like fun. I think I'm going to give it a try.

I use no pectin on the binder, and the only place I use it on the wrapper is towards the head when finishing.

the only ones i have in stock now are

CT premium shade with dominican filler (Limited Quantity)
Havana Prime with dominican filler (Limited Quantity)
Maduro With Dominican filler

The problem is, it is difficult to carry a large variety of wrappers. they take a lot more care in storage than the fillers and only having one mold at the time I can only do 10 cigars per batch.

I am going to start wrapping them in newspaper after being pressed to help increase production.

I have a current list going. my last final exam is on monday, after that i will able to start increasing inventory. When i started rolling i was juggling a lot, I had work which was full time nights, school every day until noon and i had to fit sleep in there at some point.

now that school is done, i will have a solid 4-5 hours a day i can commit to rolling. I will start selling again once i increase inventory and let them rest a week or so.

I want this tread to include everyone's progress of you start rolling, that includes everyone, Shawn, Corey, etc.

I got pictures here and there but I'm shy and lately just reading others posts on the board absorbing and still trying experiments, however theres some guys at work loving the guinea pig role and right now reviews are 70/30 on liking them with many changes made throughout the project series. Resources keeps the hobby to a small hobby window,so like you having few molds and resources of time and leaves coming in keeps it to just a fun way to relax. With me being a perfectionist I will tell you its hard to make cigars for more than just your palet and eye. Some mistakes launched my rustic series idea and I'm just happy to be doing what I originally set off in this hobby to do. Now to find different farms, ages, etc crops.
I do say this Andy, keep up the great work. and I'll post pics of my press I made after that Pm awhile back telling you of my idea, I broadened it and it works great.

How do they taste Corey?
well draw was an issue at first then to much kick now I seem to have the full with full medium with medium and mild with mild all with '98 Nic fillers and '99 ecudorian sumatra binder all with different wrappers from havana to conneticut to different madduros. So to ask me how they taste they all have a different profile depending on how much, what of and size etc. But I do like them theres something to each one I like.
By know means is this part of the hobby cheaper than buying a box of good cigars the way the sales have been going on stuff lately but I originally got into the cigar hobby to do this part of it for my personal enjoyment. I am at the point where I grab these instead of the whats left in my mad jump last november-june purchases.

My next batches are some nic/dom mixes all with the sumatra binder. Its going to be my go to Binder. I like the extra zing. My draws are good , need to be more consistant on my old figudor sizes . The mold is vintage and I want to do them justice. The other Mold I have of an undisclosed ring guage is loaned by the local B &M owner whom probably wants it back soon hehe and that will cut out my regular formed rolls I have been using to make skinnies to churches with.
As far as the Madurros go, up close in picture they look wrinkly but up close in person the 2 kind of madurros look great with some minor changes needed on cosmetics but I kind of like the rustic look. The over powered ones I have some put aside to see how they marinate however I have 2 boxes of mixed from day 1 to now unmarked so its going to be a mystery grab each time except knowing what the wrapper is.
But like I said some tweaks all different with some similarities all a learning curve that I can't really calculate until they marinate into eachother with some rest time even though they are aged they haven't melted into eachother as a stick. As Todd says they're green give them 6 months. Only I need to keep my hands outa the boxes and the gifting lowered.
Sorry this is all drained on but I am very tired got home 1.5 hrs ago from some long hours at work. I worked 37 hours since fri night.

Great job on the progress Corey. They are really starting to look better as seen with the pigtail capped ones. I have found blending to be easy with the dominican fillers, with the Nicaraguan fillers you have to be really precise, but once you get it, it is a great stick.

FedEx states that it may not even have been picked up. Even though it shows a pickup scan when you track it. FedEx doesn't know where it is. Every time I call them they just say there were no updates, bull get off your ass and look for the package.

I have asked the company to send me a replacement mold in the meantime and they basically said no. The 42x5 is the second to last one in inventory. So that is where it stands

Looks like I won't be getting a second mold. FedEx said I should contact the supplier and ask for a new item, or refund.

I am waiting on a call back from the company, she said she would call FedEx to see what she needed to do.

Honestly, if I owned the company, I would have sent out a new mold and just expected the lost one be returned if it shows up.

So I guess we are sticking with 5x50 for now.

Andrew, just because your new mold received a pickup scan doesn't necessarily mean FedEX actually picked it up. Typically, they would just scan one barcode with all of the parcels from the shipper linked to it and take the packages. If the driver was being careful, he would match the barcode manifest with the packages but I'm guessing at this time of the year he was probably pretty busy and missed it. That being said, if the driver scans it, FedEX owns it and is responsible for the parcel. If it did not have any more scans, they are responsible for the cost of shipping and the value of the item up to a certain amount unless it insured for a higher amount. It is the shippers responsibility to file the claim and be reimbursed for the lost product. I would think if they had any customer service whatsoever, a new mold would be on the way to you asap as it clearly wasn't delivered to you. If they can't do this, I'd contact the credit card and report it.

Just got together with Andrew and had some smokes. I had a one of his Connecticuts, it was delicious. I can't write a full review, as I was focused on conversation as well as the cigar. It fit my tastes almost perfectly. It was real light, and mild, but not lacking in flavor at all. I am a Perdomo Lot 23 man, and the Roxy CT gave it run for it's money.

Bingo!! I have watched tons of video's and every one of the Cuban Torcedor's use the entubado method. This guy is supposedly over the Partagas factory and their rollers, but uses the accordion bunching? Weird.

The filler I keep on the dry side. I prep and pre moisten the wrapper 2 days before I use it. But if I'm not using it at all it is best kept dry.

I got the bench cutter and mold on ebay. It remains to be seen if the mold is still usable. I figure if I buy a few of them, I'll get one that still works. I've read that they warp etc.. I'm going to clamp it with a couple of big old clamps that my dad has in his garage.

Argggggghhhhhh. So I need to vent. I had some moistened leaves put aside for madurro and havana wraps. the leaves were put together with some 13 yr Ligero 12 year sumatra binder and stored someplace where there's mold. when finding out my leaves were down there I grabbed them on my way out to work. So I opened up the bin and whoa an icky smell of ammonia came.
I opened up the bag with madurros and mold ugly mold. The binders just got a smell that air kinda took care of.
Sad part is we are talking over $100 worth of leaves of all different kinds. And this is why I did not want the leaves in the basement. man o man. I tossed the moldy stuff leaving no madurro wraps, Tossed the nic seco cause I just got some new in and will hope the sumatra binder stays untainted. this way I can still get some batches in rest for my upcoming sobriety anniversary in Feb and trout fishing trips in may and June.
Worse comes worse in Jan I will order my next leaves for my next series and make this last 2 blends very limited.....

Yeah that was my intentions but I did 4 days and someone at the house figured she would make room by sticking them in basement 3 days ago and I didn't notice they were down there till I went to grab them from the spot in the apartment I had them.

So I gifted a gal that works at the local B & M a Dominican blend with a Connecticut premium wrapper off my Recovery series and shes a medium smoker and after I called her a couple hours later she said that I am on to something with that blend. My pure nic filler was to much with the sumatra binder but she says she likes the Dominican blend and I'm really onto something if I tighten my draw up a little. She says its an effortless draw at this point. But burns great no fixing great smell great taste.

As for a cheveta I'm thinking of getting a Xikar Cigar Knife(http://www.xikar.com/products/cutters/cigar-cut-knife), cuz yay for multipurposing and its super sharp from prior experience, but if a true cheveta has more merits to it for cutting then I'll go with that.

Oh, and has anyone tried using a plastic cutting board as opposed to a wooden one? I don't have a wooden one at the moment and would rather save the extra cash, but I already have plans for a trip to Target shortly after I get back down to Raleigh.

I found a different place to go through, but just from the email response I got I can tell he's gonna be a stand up guy.

http://www.wholeleaftobacco.com/

Got the Cigar Sampler which comes with 2+ lbs of tobacco, 1/2 of a seco, 1/2 of a ligero, 1/2 of some wrapper graded broadleaf, and 1/2 of a fire cured leaf(there's also supposedly a wild card extra thrown in but I'll be happy with just whats known). Asked for the fire cured to be swapped with the other seco he offers and to swap the ligero for the other ligero(just since "dark air cured" sounds better to me than "TN90") and he had no problems with it.

I can't wait to just bury my face in the broadleaf.

Binders should not be too moist. They should be on the edge of moist and dried out.

Exactly on the storage. The wet stuff only has to be moist. And I wouldn't keep it moist for an extended period of time, two weeks max.

I am using plastic storage containers. When I moisten wrappers I usually place them in a plastic shopping bad for a day or two to even out.

DaBear

You use wet paper towels to moisten the leaves right?

The guy I ordered from claims the broadleaves are so large you can get 2 wrappers and 2 binders from each leaf(1 each from each half), but I can't just visualize how that would work in my head. Would you use the half oval shape cut out to make a wrapper as a binder?

Also thanks for the tips!

BlkDrew
12-28-2011, 11:13 PM
I use a damp terry towel.

As far as using the broadleaf for binder and wrapper you'd have to us the outer portion for the wrapper and the inner for the binder, but I cut the wrapper when I'm going to use it. You'd have to set some aside to use on the next batch for the binder.

Don't get discouraged. Are you keeping them in an over-humidified environment by chance? Try taking them out for a day or two.

I rolled my first two cigars yesterday. I was able to roll them and press them without much difficulty. The wrappers went on well, but my capping was a mess. I used the CT broadleaf as a wrapper and it had a lot of big veins. They look rough to say the least, but the shape was there. I tried to smoke one immediately and it tasted "interesting." Not bad at all. The burn was not good with a run down the side after the first 1/2. Although the wrapper was moist, it burned faster than the filler. My draw was good, but I need to put more tobacco in the cap-end. It was looser down there. All-in-all I think I did a decent job for the first time. I went back and watched more videos. Now I see more of the subtle nuances. I ordered from Leaf Only and my order was not right. I had no ligero, so I just used nic and dom. seco as filler with some Havana 7. The guy at Leaf-only was cool and made it right.

on large broadleaf, with the leaf de-veined and turned sideways, the top of the leaf would be your wrapper and the bottom (towards the vein) could be used as a binder...if it is not too veiny you could potentially use it as a wrapper as well getting 4 wrappers out of 1 full leaf.

***just note that maduro does not typically make for a good binder as the binder is key to the burn of a cigar, and maduro is notorious for it's less then perfect burn qualities.

I rolled my 2nd batch today. I received the Ligeros from Leafonly and wanted to try a few. I put a few in the mold and tried wrapping some in newspaper. The newspaper method worked well! They don't look too pretty, but I think I'm getting a little better with the rolls.

Newspaper method, I think this is the first I have heard of this??? Please explain. Pictures would be great too

In my research I came across a couple examples of cuban rollers using newspaper instead of a press. All you have to do is cut a long strip of newspaper about 3" wide and then, after you apply the binder, with the paper at an 75* angle, roll the cigar up tight in the strip of paper as if adding a second binder. When done, twist both ends of paper and let it rest 45 minutes. I was able to get a lancero shape this way and was surprised at how tight the bunch had become. It was as if I had taken it out of a press. Keep in mind that I haven't tried one of these cigars yet so I don't know about any potential draw issues, but they feel solid. Sorry, didn't take pics this time. I'll post some from my next roll.

Very interesting, I would love to see some videos of how to do it and how they come out. When you fire one up let us know how it burns.

I swear I've seen a video of this somewhere, but for the life of me cannot remember where.

well we are settled in the new apt. She let me have the spare room as the "cigar room" for storing and rolling, not smoking (that is for outside) I got the new mold and turned out 10 of each today. the new size is a "40 x5.5" but with a wrapper i believe it will be right around 42. i can't wait to try them. I was very careful on how much filler i used making sure that they will not be packed too tight

Just got my mold in today, a 6x50 round cap mold. Now just waiting on my tobacco which should have been here by now. Both the mold and the tobacco were sent from Ohio, the mold was sent a day and a half later and has already showed up, yet no sign of the tobacco. Hopefully it'll get in tomorrow and I can have my first batch of trial blends by Monday.

Yea, thats where I placed my order. The guy was helpful and responsive so I'm not too worried, but still, even with USPS it shouldn't take this long, as proven by my mold shipment. If I can steal a camera from one of my roommates I'll do so as I don't have one currently.

Oh, and how long do you typically leave them in the mold for? 24 hours or just overnight?

Well just got the order in, it was shipped UPS, so I guess it got delivered earlier this evening and they never bothered to knock. Any who, looks good, and he threw in a small bag of perique to play around with(though it'll most likely get chopped up and used for my pipes). It all looks good, pending what Don says about the Dark Air Cured leaves I got(both the seco and ligero showed up with white splotches all over them that aren't mold, but look more like something was sprayed onto the leaf itself). I'll post pics in the morning after I get a response from Don and have a chance to unpack everything. I'll probably have my first few thrown in the mold before I head up to Empire to watch some football.

Whelp, that was a quick response. Don claims its "frog eye" and after a few minutes googling up on it, it certainly does sound and look the same, so problem solved. I'll have pictures up and my first few rolls done in the morning.

I got you covered Dan,

And as far as time in the mold, I do an hour, turn 1/4 and let them sit another hour. If the binder is on the moist side will let them sit in the mold for a day.

First five are wrapped and ready for smoking. Gonna let them sit out and dry out some more, but I should be able to find a good blend with these. Ironically, the first one I wrapped definitely looks the best.

Gotta get a camera first. :r

Tried 3 of my five blends, had 2 using the TN90 seco, first was with 3 half ligero leaves and ended up being too light and you couldn't taste the filler over the broadleaf so I put it down after an inch(imagine a FdO wrapped in broadleaf), the second was much better with 8 half leaves, I'll probably make a few with 10 tomorrow as I can tell it will taste better with more. The one with the Dark Air Cured seco was good on the first I tried, with 6 half leaves of ligero. It reminded me a lot of the La Casita Criollas, with just that distinct broadleaf flavor with a nice earthy undertone.

Just got done with de-stemming all the ligero and TN90 seco. I'll de-stem all the DAC seco tomorrow at work(assuming my boss doesn't yell at me for bringing my rolling set up with me).

Andrew, those look awesome.

Bear, so frog eye is some kind of a fungus?
I know literally nothing about tobacco maladies, so I did a little googling. I am familiar with water spots and the green marks sometimes called frog eye, but frog eye seems to be a fungus:

Weather fleck: http://www.ipmimages.org/browse/detail.cfm?imgnum=1402062
Maybe frog eye is just a loose term.

It really is so cool to see so many brothers getting into rolling. :tu

Did some google-fu of my own and was lead to believe that is was the result of too much nitrogen in the soil(or too little, one of the two :r)
