I decided to do something with all the cigar bands that I've accumulated over the past year of smoking. At first, I was going to try to cover my traveldor, but when a fellow service member overseas required something to put her cigars in, I donated the traveldor and now I'm covering my 20 count desk top. The only glue I had in the house was some tacky glue my wife uses for her scrap booking and ribbon making. I thought it would be fine to use but it doesn't dry exactly clear and makes the bands look old and faded. Here is a picture of what I did before deciding to ask you guys for advice.

What kind of glue or sealer do you guys use when covering things with cigar bands?

I think that actually is a cool idea bro!

I just did a clock and posted my picture in the thread of thebayratt who originally gave me the idea ..... Check it out to maybe give you an idea of how these bands look when they are staggered and overlapping. (scroll to bottom of thread to see the one I did)

http://www.cigarasylum.com/vb/showthread.php?t=47542

Once thing though is your glue.... if you use a standard glue that is not acid free and apply it to paper bands like these they turn yellow and look horrible over time.

Plus I would make the all run horizontal .... seems like when they all run that way and overlap they look real nice.

I do love the idea though!!!

A very kind BOTL on here sent me a large envelope of his old cigar bands and I have a lot left.... I will be watching to see how yours turns out and I may order a cheap 25-5- count box to do one of these myself.

Can't wait to see the progress.

That clock looks awesome. I think i'm going to try to play tetris with this one and see how it turns out. I'm hoping that since they are all going to be 90 degrees from one another I will achieve the same kind of look. if it turns out horrible, i can always do another one. I've got a couple of things lying around that are just screaming to be covered with cigar bands.

I'm liking where it's going Earl, I tried this with superglue and ended up messing up the corner of my humi and gluing my fingers together, it was BAD lol. Good luck to ya. I am going to try again eventually, just not sure is gluesticks would work on wood. :sh

got called back to work this afternoon and haven't had a chance to do any more work. Hopefully I'll be able to do some work on it this week.

Archival glue is the glue to use. Its acid free and won't yellow over time.

On the clear coat... ya got me. I tried using a spray type and probably used too much too fast. A few bands actually got "messed up" by it. The others weren't effected at all...
I would do some trial and error on a few bands on some wood glued down, then try out different types of clear coat and different ways of applying it to see which works best.

Yep that's why I used from your suggestion Shawn.... It was like $7 at Michaels.

On the package it says Paper Glue .... then you read more and its for archival and will say Acid Free on the front.

ok, I haven't been called into work yet today so I figured I'd get as much work done on this thing as possible before they called. Guess I had more time than I thought, I finished the top. It doesn't look as good as I thought it would but its not bad for my first try.

Well, if you don't like what you did with the box, you can always shoot it with that long gun in the case.

A Remington 7MM Mag would make a pretty big hole in this small 20 count.

Go to Michael's, Jo Ann Fabrics, Hobby Lobby or any large craft store and get a bottle of Mod Podge Matte. It is what I use on my band projects as well as the Slick's Trick Stick. It is an all-in-one glue, sealer and finish.

I went to hobby lobby and got some Mod Podge Gloss and covered the humidor and my net book.

Here is the humidor before the mod podge.

That's what I'm talking about!

Looks great!

Tedious though isn't it?

You start out thinking "aw hell, I'll just slap them on there every which way..." Ten minutes later and part way in you're saying, "Let's see, I've already got a Arturo Fuente over there....hmmmm, maybe a Tat Miami next to the Cohiba, and a God of Fire right dead center!"

Yeah.....I know.

That pretty much describes the way the laptop went. The humidor was a little bit easier because I put them all vertical or horizontal. the laptop started out easy cause I was just throwing them on there every which way but as I started running out of room it quickly became the hardest game of tetris I have every played.

Did you guys ever see those laptops with the interchangeable covers? This project would be perfect for that setup.

Its my desert laptop so i wasn't too worried about messing it up or anything like that. I also figured that if I didn't like it I could just take it all off. I used an Elmers glue stick to put it all on so it comes off pretty easy with a damp cloth.

A few projects I've done in a similar fashion, the humidors I made, of course the otter boxes I just embellished.

I used Modge Podge craft glue (or however you spell it) to glued the bands down, then a two part bar cote epoxy to seal everything in.
