Well guys.. I figured id open a small thread to give me some sort of journal on my new path in life. One i hope to share with some old friends and new!

Towards the latter of last year, into the earlier part of this early 2011,i was consulting with my doctor and several Bariatric surgeons to discuss the possibility of weight loss surgery.

I have tried all kinds of diets in my life. You name it, and i have failed it. I have always been a big guy, but in 2001, i had a knee injury which hindered my ability to keep playing sports. And i found that to be the start of my decline. I got bigger and bigger, each year, and i guess i just turned a blind eye.

Now while i have never let my weight keep me from doing/trying things; I noticed, it was slowly starting to stop me physically. Mentally, i was all there, but my body wasn't playing the part it once did :(

So Fast forward to June 28, when my Newly appointed Nutritionist laid out my new, pre-surgery diet. Wheeeew this seems fun! lol.. syke! My Starting weight on that fine day. 365lbs...BMI = 53.4? Not Good.. But there i was, ready to start my new life.. it needed to be not only tried, but completed..

So i started on one meal replace a day.. and after 1 month, i lost 19lbs.. Not bad! Then i started two meal replacements a day. and i lost an additional 14lbs. This seemed hard, as you try telling a guy who has been eating fast food and whatever that he can only eat a small 4 inch potein bar, twice a day.. Well then, the doctor asked me if i wanted to try 3 a day.. i said Yes, i could do it.. Well if you think two a day is twice as hard as one a day, then by my polish math, then 3 a day is 47342 times harder than 2 a day!. But i stuck it out, and tried not to cut any corners ( a sensible meal occurred maybe twice, once at best friends wedding), but i tried to stick to my guns, and not cheat myself out of my new life's path.

Fast forward to September 14th. RNY Surgery Morning.. Weigh in -324lbs, for a total of 41lbs in 75days.. Not bad for a guy who couldn't lose weight. hehe

The moment i woke up from my surgery, i felt like i was hit by a train. I was sore, i was weak as a leaf, i was scared. why did i do this?. 36 hours after my surgery, i was 330lbs.. thats right, i gained over 6lbs of weight from my IV, and i was just a mess..

I havent smoked any cigars since September 10th, and while im pretty sad about that, i just want to make sure i let myself heal first until i get back to my hobby.

And as of today, im 302lbs, a total of 22lbs from my surgery date 19 days ago.. 63lbs total! My cloths dont fit at all, and even though im still sore as heck, im starting to think this might actually work.. Anybody who has been down this path knows that the first few months can be very frustrating, and my journey thus far has been no exception. But i just hope that in the end, it will be all worth it..

MY personal goal is 230lbs. My doctors goal (which is a stretch goal for me ) is 205lbs. As soon as i am able to work out, and hit the treadmill and elliptical, i am SO there.. i want to get jacked up like i was in college. And more importantly, i want to be healthy and live to spend time with my wife; time to succeed in my lifes work; time to enjoy with the great friends i have in life.. The time is now..

And to the people that i was fortunate enough to meet here, whether it was at Shack or any other herfs, etc, i cant wait to see you guys again in my new body , hehe..

I hope to be able to post my updates here, however random they may be.. The thing with this type of surgery is; there isn't a "steady" stream of weight loss as there would be normally.. I might lose 4lbs in a week, and then lose nothing for 2 weeks, etc.. If i am retaining water, for example, the flow of weight loss goes awry. So my updates might be random, but i hope to have some good news in the future :)

good luck Ron, I know what you are going thru. I was almost 400lbs before I had my duodenal switch. I'm back at 240lbs now, less then 2 years later and feel so much better. Don't loose the weight too quickly as that might cause other health issues like I am experiecing right now (low heart rate).

It is a life changing procedure, but a life changer for the best.

That's fantastic! X3 on the "go slow" advise. My doctors told me "you didn't gain all that weight overnight, don't expect to get rid of it overnight!" With that, I was able to go from 390 to 285 in a little under 2 years! Keep it going! You are definitley on the right track!!

baby steps is good. Don't expect too much too soon or you'll make the mistake I made, I was starving myself in the beginning and was malnurished at a certain moment.

Ferdie, i have read that from several different places as well.. And also its not good for the body (loose skin, dehydration, etc). im not expecting much until i get to the gym.. i cant wait

And ive been getting 80-90 grams of protein in every day, and ive been drinking enough fluids.. its not easy though, but gotta do it!

Congratulations and good luck. Look at this as a marathon and not a sprint, don't try to lose the weight too quickly. The more gradually you lose it, the more likely you will be to keep it off.

Inspiring to say the least! You look great man, keep up the good work.

Just curious; but did/do you have sleep apnea as a result of your weight? I ask, because I have it and it is believed to be a direct result of my weight gain. I'm also fearful of diabetes as it runs in my family. So... I need to start thinking about losing weight myself. What really sucks is nearly all of my weight goes straight to my gut. Makes a great beer shelf, but also feels like I've got the incredible shrinking winky! :r

NeuRon
11-09-2011, 06:50 PM
i apologize for not responding, as i must have missed these somehow!.

i did not have any problems with sleep apnea, but extreme weight is the leading factor in that.. If you are starting to think u need WLS, time to tal to a surgeon and discuss some options, dont have any shame!

Hmm, as far as my pre-surgery menu?

Lets look at the illustrious menu of a near 400lb hot-mess; pre-surgery

Breakfast- Either porkroll (or sausage), egg and cheese on a bagel, or a LARGE bowl of frosted flakes and a cheese danish

Lunch: A Cheeseburger and fries with all the trimmings, some cookies, a snapple, and some chips (nauseating)

Snack - candy bar

Dinner: 5 slices of Pizza

Snack. 8 cookies and 14 ounces of 2% Milk.

yay - death at 40!
_____________________________________________

Fast Forward to now..

Breakfast - 3 ounces of cottage cheese and 1 ounce of SF applesauce, or 1 scrampled egg with a sprinkle of cheddar, and a strip of turkey bacon

snack. 10-12 cashews

Lunch - 4 ounces of turkey chili with sprinkled cheddar

snack - Supreme protein bar

Gym for 1.5 hours, cardio and shredding

Dinner - 4-5 ounce chicken breast with some carrots or some other vegetable.

BTW, for reference, i try for 75-90 grams of protein and 60 ounces of liquid a day..

Mike, im curious how much you weigh.. your a big guy anyway.. Broad shoulders like me.. So what method will you be using to try to slim down?

Back in Jan 2010 I was at my highest 335. I started reducing carbs and working out a little, mostly cardio, and I was down to 290 in about 5 months. I took 35 of the 45 off in the first 10 weeks. I stayed between 290 and 300 for about a year and a half but my eating habits slowly got worse and my activity ceased. I'm wearing 46-34 size pants. That size was painfully small back in 2010. Now they are loose, but I don't fit in a 44 waist either.

Jan 2012 I was beginning at 313. I'm at 304 now with a similar reduced carb approach to eating. I know what I can eat and cannot. I actually feel better and sleep better when I reduce carbs. Also, it forces me to adjust my portions as well. Obviously my portions were out of whack. When reducing carbs you substitute it with protein, but you simply cannot eat as much protein. So, in the first two weeks my portions are about half what they were but with high protein foods and limited cabs. Right now I'm eat mostly salads, chicken, beef, eggs, grilled or steamed veggies, cheeses, berries, and nuts. I do eat venison too, but not as often. I know in the end I will have to increase my carb intake to reach an even balance once I'm at my target weight.

I haven't started any cardio yet. I will, but things are hectic at home right now. The Mrs is going to give birth any day, my MIL is staying with us, and my FIL will be arriving on Friday.

I would like to lose 50 by 3/30 which would put me at 263. My overall goal is to improve my health, be able to buy pants at normal stores (this means a 40 in waiste or smaller for my 34 in length), get into an active lifestyle or cardio/weights on a daily basis, and to accomplish that I think that means a weight of about 240 to 250. I'm about 6'6" to give an idea of my overall build. I'll nail down the final goal as I get closer.

BTW, looking good Ron. It's an amazing transformation. I hope it's a lifestyle change that sticks.

Sorry for such a stupid question, but is it true that you cant drink alot of beer or carbonated drinks after having weight loss surgery?

*This really is a serious question and I am not trying to be funny.

NeuRon
02-14-2012, 04:47 PM
it is true, Travis.... all carbonated beverages are not reccomended for RNY patients, since the carbonation fills you up and can upset your pouch... Since i do not drink much soda, that part did not affect me much, However, i do miss being able to put away 20 beers without a hiccup, lol..

But having said that, that part of my life is behind me.. It is that part of my life that has put my life into disarray in the first place. I am happy with my small portions and such nowadays..

Fact of the matter is, i can still enjoy a beer sparingly.. Its "recommended" to not drink carbonation.. I had 1 the other day,and it took me about 90 minutes to finish, but i still enjoyed it. probably more than any other beer ive ever had.. lol..

finally bought some new work jeans, Arizona relaxed fit 36x32.. odear lord thank you!

Congratulations!!! Been focused on me and a similar weight loss quest this past year and apologies for not piping in earlier. Just read the entire thread and... you da man! Making the lifestlye choices to get where you wanted to be and having the mental strength to keep with it is an awsome accomplishment. The real work is in your head.. the body will do what you are able to command it to and you have taken control of your life by your strength of will!!!!!

Finding happiness with stability vs lower numbers is the next phase. Took me a few months to shake off the "will to lose" as it would come and go and you end up yo yoing a bit.

Finding that new normal might become frustrating but it will pass once you find a number that you can live with looking back at you on that scale.

Kudos to your fantastic accomplishment!

Hey us Arizona jeans guys gotta stick together. :) Its the only thing i have ever bought at JCP co. LIke em a lot. Plus the 32 x 32 on the label never gets old. :tu Jeans make us happierr cuz the number is 1-2 lower than regualr pants. I'm 33 or 34 waist in dockers but most jeans... 32 - its the little things that make life worth living. :noon

32x32, good lord.. lol

my waist is a 36, and i usually wear a larger size because my thighs are a little "robust" :su

Well guys.. I figured id open a small thread to give me some sort of journal on my new path in life. One i hope to share with some old friends and new!

...

MY personal goal is 230lbs. My doctors goal (which is a stretch goal for me ) is 205lbs. ....

Given your track record of success might you consider tackling another seemingly impossible task... how about working on helping men understand how to keep their women happy? :)

COngrats again.
