View Full Version : Old School/Retro Gaming: What are You Playing?

Starscream

Since the Game Thread is pretty much all new stuff, I'd like to see if anyone's playing any of the old stuff (Atari, NES, SNES, Genesis, Turbo Grafx, Neo-Geo, N64, PS1, emulators, etc...)
Also, anything retro on the Wii Virtual Console or PS3, XBox 360, or PC too.
I've been playing Punch-Out, Tecmo Bowl, Contra, Castlevania, Earthbound, and TMNT: The Arcade Game of late.

Anybody else into retro gaming?

Other notables I've played of late:

Kid Icarus
Metroid
Battletoads (The Arcade Version)
Excitebike
Super Mario All-Stars
X-Men: The Arcade Game
The Avengers
Mega Man 2

Old school gamers, recommend something good.

I might have to revisit Skate or Die and California Games. I loved Skate or Die when I was a kid, but couldn't figure it out when I revisited it last year.

And how could I forget the most AWESOME game of all time:

STREETS OF RAGE 2! The soundtrack alone puts it in the top ten, but the gameplay for a beat'em up makes it my favorite of ALL TIME.

Never was good at either Pong or the more modernized Breakout, but I still respect both games.

I don't own any new game system. I bought a PS2 a few years ago when I quit drinking to keep me occupied. Now it doesn't hold my attention for more than a few minutes. I still have my original NES from 20 or so years ago, along with a few games. Commando, Gunsmoke, Gradius, Contra, Baseball, Ice Hockey, Skate or Die 1 & 2, World Cup soccer, Super Spike V-Ball... and of course all 3 super mario's.

But my favorite was always Breakthru. That game is the isht.

The old school controller is awesome just b/c of the retro look, but if you want a more accurate controller for games such as Punch-Out, I would suggest looking into a GameCube controller that you'll actually have to plug in. The wireless remotes have a very slight delay and can hurt you on games like Punch-Out.

I'm fortunate enough to still have my original NES. It's cool that you can pick up most games for between 50 cents to $2.00 (although a few rare games go for up to $1,000). If you're interested, you can find one on E-Bay or Amazon for less than $50, or you can buy the dual NES/SNES system for around $50 too.

I picked up a N64 a year or two ago. I never actually tested it and have misplaced it since. I just recently nabbed Goldeneye 007 and Starfox 64 for the N64 again, but haven't tested them because I can't find the console!:bhd I also picked up SFII for the SNS and SM3 with the box, inserts, and all, but don't have the consoles for them.

I just got the 3DS, which is pretty slick, and have been playing Starfox 64 on it. I played through once. The controls are not the same, but the graphics are beautiful, and they left the spirit of the game intact. It is a blast! Anyone have it so we can get in on some multiplayer? That was my favorite part of this game! I also garabbed Zelda:OoT, but haven't cracked it open yet.

The first one isn't very involved as an RPG, you need to talk to people in the towns for hints for what to do next, but that's about it. And you don't have to worry about a large party of characters either.

How in the heck did I get that giant gaping mouthed smile in the middle of my post?

Throwing knives were great. So were explosives and the Magnum. My favorite was running in circles strafing. No game comes close to the strafing ability of this one.

I played it for one night before selling my Wii. It was okay, but not the same game at all. Some of the same concepts are there, I guess. It's not the same without the N64 controller either.

Wow, Rush'n Attack. As a kid that game ate many of the quarters I dug up out of the couch.

This thread is good timing. I was just thinking about building myself a MAME machine (http://www.maximumpc.com/article/features/how_build_kickass_mame_arcade_cabinet_old_pc) as a winter project.

Right out of high school, I had three kick ass jobs. I worked sales/tech in a bike shop, clerk at a Laser Disc store (showing my age, right?), and managed a small arcade in the Chicago suburbs that got to "field test" Midway and Capcom games before they were public release.

Now, with the power of PCs and emulators, I can have 10,000 original, classic games on a laptop, and build a nice arcade grade USB joystick that will play them all!

I played "LION" the other day again, that game is cool. It is as hard to hunt and catch prey as it must be for a
real lion. What I need to find a way to make work is Crusader: No Remorse, but I need to access areas of my brain
that I haven't used in over ten years, in order to make a boot disc that will work. I can't just pop it in and play it.
I used to be able to work MSDOS with no trouble, navigating directories, typing in commands, making boot discs.
Now, pfft. Forget it. I also need to break out Nascar Racing. Wow, what a game that was. As was Falcon 4.0 (F-16 sim)
I would spend entire weekends just trying to master landing without crashing. Not easy at all. I also would spend
equal amount's of time with F-14 Tomcat II trying to land it on a carrier. I am just not good at adding power and
taking away power to maintain that glide path.

That was an awesome game at the time, I loved the top down perspective. Between that & Doom, it was probably the game that helped get my son (23) hooked on PC gaming. I'm not sure how it was programmed, but you can't get that thing to run on any other OS, at least I haven't been able to. :sh

I felt that way about the Castlevania games from the 80s, early 90s. They used to torment me when I was little, brutal difficulty curve. But for whatever reason, one summer two years ago I dusted off the old NES and SNES and tore through ALL of them. Aside from having to check the internet for a little help with Simons Quest (WTF, kneel randomly at a lake for a tornado to come and take you away!?), I crushed all of them. it was incredibly satisfying, like tying up a loose end from my childhood :tu

Yeah this game has always been impossible for me. I always get to the level where you have to ride around the beach and pick up all the halfpipe plans and they're blowing away....f'ing impossible. Must have spent hours trying to beat it as a kid. :c

Holy cow, Guardian Legend really brings back some memories!

Here is a pic of 2 of my young`ens with their first attempts at Mario. I had the bug to hook up the NES after sitting for years in a closet.

I love this pic! Always a good thing when you introduce the kids to the classics! My kids love all of the original Super Mario games on the NES, but I've tried to no avail to get them to enjoy Pac-man, Burgertime, Pole Position, Dig-Dug, or Frogger. I have gotten them addicted to the light gun games on the NES though (Duck Hunt and Hogan's Alley). My youngest son pronounces Duck Hunt as "Duck kunt".:r

Pac-man Championship Edition DX is awesome. New game that brings back that old school Pac-Man feel. It's addictive.

Didn't see it mentioned, but if you have an Ipad (or iphone, although it's tougher with a dpad control), check out Activition Anthology. Not the same as having the old 2600 system, but for $7 you get 45 old school games, including Pitfall. This is a direct port, not one of the crappy remakes they have tried over the years.

I need to find a light gun to plug into my NES. There is no telling where the original is, but Duck Hunt would be fun and the kids would have fun with it.

I would have to count up all my old games but I got enough to keepe busy.

I enjoy a lot of retro gaming. I have an Atari 2600, Atari 7800, NES, and some of the other pre-playstation era gaming systems. I've been collecting the old games over the years and get a lot of enjoyment out of playing them. This is a cool thread!

I just moved the NES from my parents house to mine. Haven't had a chance to hook it up this week. I just bought Blaster Master and can't wait to try it out again.

I have the 64 hooked up in the boys room but rarely play it.

I've been on the lookout for a 7800 for a while. I want one so I can play both 7800 and 2600 games on one system. I'm not paying E-Bay prices for one though. How do you like the 7800?

If you look around on Craigslist you might be able to find one for a reasonable price. Just make sure that it comes with the power adapter, because those are very difficult to find. I generally just have my 7800 plugged in, and use it to play the 2600 games too.

I do enjoy the 7800 - I think 2600 games look a little better on it and there are just enough cool 7800 games out there to justify owning one.

I have been collecting retro gaming stuff for a while now and have seen a crazy spike in prices recently. I am fortunate to live in Portland because every year we have the "Portland Retro Gaming Expo" and that is a good place to buy games/systems because you can haggle a bit.

I'm not sure what your guys stance is on emulators, but grab M.A.M.E. and you can play everything your heart desires. Over the years i've compiled quite a collection of roms and even built myself a couple of arcade machines running my favorite games.

I don't have a problem with them at all, but it's just not quite the same as having the real thing in your hands. I think having a MAME arcade machine would be pretty cool.

Retro gaming? To me that means the hexagonal square boards for war games made by companies like Avalon Hill. And role-playing games done with books character sheets, and the imaginations of a bunch of guys sitting around the room. Games like DND, Champions, Marel Super Heroes, etc...

If anyone here has any old NES, SNES, or N64 games that they would like to get rid of, shoot me a PM. I've been collecting some again lately and am up to 81 NES games.

If there are any other retro collectors here, check out The Game Chasers on Youtube. The show is like a ripoff of American Pickers, except it's all video game related and not staged.

I have a few NES games that are tucked away someplace. Haven't had that system hooked up in quite some time. It was my late sisters system and I hold on to it for purely sentimental reasons.

I am, however, in search of Wii games. Can't seem to find any good selection of those for the original system since they came out with the Wii-U. Does anyone have any original Wii games that they would like to part with?

There's an awesome game in the app store called the Organ Trail. It's basically the Oregon Trail game set in a post-apocalyptical zombie outbreak. Similar old school Oregon Trail graphics included. Fun game for only a dollar or two.
