View Full Version : Blak Smyth's art thread

I have been thinking about starting to do cigar artwork.
I have created this thread to discuss my art, get opinions and display what I have created.

I did my first cigar art pencil sketch this weekend, what do you guys think?
It is about 9"-10" long. It looks much better than the pic gives it justice.

I mean no disrespect personally, but I don't see this as art. It's a simple drawing or sketch. It doesn't convey anything to me other than it's a cigar.

I see your point, this "is" only a sketch. It is a starting point, I have not done any cigar art yet so I am just testing the waters.
Personally I see a simple drawing or sketch as art, if it speaks to you personally or not.
Thanks for the opinion though, I respect your honesty.

Yes, it is. But he was looking for comments and I made a point to say that "to me" it wasn't.

Understood :tu That's why I don't really get art, I don't always see what I should and I don't know how to preceive it sometimes that it just frustrates me, but I see your point.

Looks fine to me, Shane. Growing up surrounded by artistic siblings and other family with not a lick of skill in me, I appreciate your work for what it is. With that said, I think once you get past the sketching phase and into bringing something original from within you to the pad or canvas, that's when you'll really get some accolades. :2

We are not the first group to ever ask "What is art?". Probably few topics have been more debated excepting "What is the best caliber - 9mm or 45ACP?". While some like wayner123 may not view the simple pencil sketch as "art", the sketch strikes an emotional chord in Mickey and he sees art. Opinions differ, that gives flavor to life.

Whether or not we will agree if it is art, I suspect most,if not all of us will agree that you are an "artist". I say this because of the work you have done on your avatars and their reception in this forum. That work really stands on it's own.

Whatever anyone thinks of your sketch (and I like it very much), I believe that it is only a seed that has been planted and that you certainly have the talent to grow that seed and if it is not "art", it will most certainly lead to "art".

Please do not think I am being flippant or sarcastic, because I'm not. You have the beginnings of a dream and some talent. Pursue that dream. If the art is in you, it will surface.

IMO it is art. Its a skill that not all have. Some people would consider the shed I built art. Its all in what you consider it to be. I like what you have done.

Yep it's cool that people can draw and paint but more often than not..... I don't get it.

That said looks good.

Okay, so I realize this is very raw and sloppy but that's why I like it.
I was just laying an outline to start painting from and after I was done for the night I actually liked the base outline the way it is. It's kind of dark and raw.
It is a work in progress but I figured I would share:

http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6161/6166067736_9919d8af78.jpg

My plan is to have a cigar in the mouth with the smoke rising up on the left.
I really can't decide if I will detail this or just keep it this sloppy raw look, we will have to see.
I assume this style will appeal more to my personal tastes than most of yours.

Any comments so far?

By the way,
Mike (muhren) is a great painter and a truly generous BOTL. We have been talking in PM's and he has been very helpfull! I highly recomend supporting him and his art! I really appreciate all your help Mike!

I think the pencil sketch is awesome. While the painting is meritous technically, I don't like the subject matter, so it doesn't make me really "look at it", ya know? I had to go back and take a good look (twice) before I was ready to comment, just to be fair, and say it's really pretty awesome. How anyone can make paint do anything is beyond me, and the skull is really very complicated and intricate.
Well done, my man. :tu
I think you're going to really make this thing go in a big way.

I will post them here when they have cigar related images like today did.
These are not anything impressive just some doodles during meetings, whatever I can do to stay awake!

Also any suggestion to what specific cigar band I should use in my above painting?
I was thinking maybe the red S&B (MOAB?), having it be the only colored item in the piece.

Thoughts?

sevans105

I like that idea. Having the red band on the otherwise black and white would really pop. muhren did a similar thing with his Opus X pen and ink drawings. Although Illusione isn't in Red...That might be cool too...kind of a nod to their Bat wing logo.

I am not real happy it resembles the Illusione thing though, I never saw the Illusione thing before it was posted here. If I do that I might as well add the wings, might be kind of a cool tibute. It will be different enough but still be similar. I could add the red oval for a punch of color then. Thanks for the input Scott!
What does the 9 mean on the Illusione logo, any idea?

I am going to do the smoke different, was just messing around.

I mean no disrespect personally, but I don't see this as art. It's a simple drawing or sketch. It doesn't convey anything to me other than it's a cigar.

IMHO I would go even further and say this is a line drawing with some tonal value added. I think this drawing is the starting stage of something that could be interesting but it is really lacking and unfinished right now.

It's a bit timid in that there is an attempt to add shading but stops with just the shadow. For example, why is the cigar the same value as the background? The actual band is white but we know the cigar is many, many shades darker, so why isn't the cigar represented that way? Think of how you perceive a cigar- what are your first impressions? Color? Then represent these as dark or light. Go back and be bold with your shading.

Wrapper lines are much too prominent also. Do they usually jump out at you when you look at a cigar or do they disappear into the overall color? Detail is important but recognize when they should be present and when they are superfluous.

Straight lines vs. 'jittery'. The outline of the cigar has been carefully drawn to show smooth curves and straight lines whereas the band is the opposite. Do one or the other not both, otherwise the drawing looks disjointed.

If you are going to incorporate shading into your drawings, a valuable lesson for you might be photograph an object, convert it to grey scale on your computer and draw and sketch from that. It will help you to identify value/tone.

Try some drawing exercises such as drawing an object without lifting your pencil or looking at the page. It will help you to see and give confidence to your drawing.

Hope this helps. All IMHO.

Great shading on this one. Almost a gothic lovecraft-ian feel to it. The shading and cross-hatching give it some depth and round-ness. Something like this would look great in silver or black paint.....floating bat like over a flat plain that receded off in to the distance. Maybe a dusty dark brown with this image floating in the center.

Just a thought. Definite promise there though.

Wow, that skull is sweet! :tu

Thanks brother, I actually like when I sit down and start doodeling and it turns into something. I don't have a good imagination so I can't just sit down and know what I want to draw typically. That skull was a request of a co-worker for a tattoo. He was in the meeting with me and kept trying to look down the table at it. I redrew it for him a little more anatomicaly correct but he liked this version better after all. Here is the sketch with the ink outline of the second one, I may have posted it in the tattoo thread before:

The sketch is awesome, but I think it will all come down to the media used for the actual art. I have noticed that with most "caves" or smoking dens they are generally darker and relaxed. I really enjoy the look of oils and charcoal in rich colors in that type of atmosphere. Some water colors have a lack of presence in my eyes, but I am certainly no expert in these matters. I just like things that are pretty :)

Something along the lines of this... is what I am trying to describe.
http://i569.photobucket.com/albums/ss131/Diepeveen/428663_10150679338976209_521671208_11228343_214670 4131_n.jpg

I see your point, this "is" only a sketch. It is a starting point, I have not done any cigar art yet so I am just testing the waters.
Personally I see a simple drawing or sketch as art, if it speaks to you personally or not.
Thanks for the opinion though, I respect your honesty.

This project is dead in the water, I went into my art/cigar room the other day and found a large tear in the canvas. The wife says she has no idea how it happened.

Looks great!! Maybe you can patch it up and make it a print rather than the original losing the 'feature'?

Maybe, I have really never had any prints made though. I would think they are expensive to have made.
I still have a long way to go on this picture, not really motivated to work on it now and a hole in the canvas kinda set me back.
It's not a simple tear either, it's a L shaped tear about an inch each direction.

Moar?

Actually I have been trying to pay closer attention in meetings lately.
I go through phases where I draw a lot and then have no interest for a while.
I did start another painting a while back, I will see if I can kind a pic.

Here it is, it is far from done:

piece that Shane did just for me (he even took measurements of my arm from pictures, etc)
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a137/Sixtydashone/bs1.png

finished piece, one sitting, 4 hours... not EXACTLY the same, but 95% of it is the same.. he had to blend it in to an existing tattoo on the other side, so the exterior changed a little as well.. i am 100% pleased!.......it is still scabbing, so it may look weird in some spots, hehe
