View Full Version : Favorite Bottom/Middle Shelf Liquors?

Browsing some of the threads here and there's a lot of nice high end/top shelf stuff being posted.

Anyone like the middle or bottom shelf stuff? Either by itself or mixed with something?

I don't drink a whole lot of hard liquor, but if I do, it's usually Crown and Coke.

What about everyone else? Any lower end stuff you guys enjoy? Bacardi? Smirnoff? Captains? Sky? etc?

Well I am not sure if it is Bottom Shelf, but I really enjoy myself some Sailor Jerry's Spiced Rum. 90 Proof goodness.

I would agree with this. I like Sailor Jerry and will even go cheaper and snag some Admiral Nelsons every once in a while.

Jim Beam, for when I'm in the mood for a mixed drink.

For the pricepoint, it's damn hard to beat Svedka vodka. I can buy a homewrecker at my local liquor store for under $20, and it'll last for at least a couple weeks between the GF and I.

For middle shelf vodka, I like Belvedere and Tito's. Never drank any top shelf vodka. Tried Ultimat, and I thought it sucked. But, that's just my opinion. Mediocre spirits in a fancy bottle. And Paul Mitchell owns it (same owner as Patron :yuck: )

New Amsterdam gin is dirt cheap and okay for mixing.

I've been known to buy Evan Williams bourbon on occasion.

For rum: Appleton Estate. V/X or Reserve. At my local liquor store they run 19.99 and 24.99, respectively.

I like JW Red when making a Godfather. New Amsterdam gin as mentioned, makes a mean G&T. There are some really good bourbons and ryes that don't break the bank, too. Elijah Craig, Evan Williams SB, to name two bourbons and Rittenhouse Rye 100 for rye. I can drink those three neat.

Jameson Irish Whiskey. I can get a 1.75l for $29.99.

And what do you mix that with? :D

I used to drink a fair amount of Chivas Regal, before I discovered the delights inherent in single malts. Were I still in the habit of haunting bars, I might on occasion choose Chivas and water.

Smirnoff has won several blind taste contests against vodkas costing twice as much, and would likely be my choice for mixed drinks - if I'm paying for it. that is. :r

When I'm not drinking beer, I drink Crown, Bacardi White, and Smirnoff (with mixed drinks). Crown Black straight! :tu

A simple of Jack and Coke is my mid-shelf choice. If it's a particularly hot day, I'll throw equal parts of mid-bottom shelf vodka (usually Smirnoff), frozen lemonade, and ice into the blender and make a delicious smoothie. Those are some of my favorites...

If you want to hit rock bottom:

Early Times
Burnettes Vodka
Dewars Scotch
Ballentines(simple flavor but cheap)

Tom when I was in the USVI's, Stoli was around 10 bucks a fifth. Needless to say that was cheaper than water down there. And more abundant.:r

Burnett's vodka ain't rock bottom (although it is REALLY crappy). I buy Taaka vodka for when I go to festivals. 9.97 for a 1.75 liter. I always get liquor stolen from me at shows. Guess I'm too trusting. But hell, I'd GIVE them a damn bottle if they seriously needed it. Probably just punk kids.

Sailor Jerry's is good.

But I'd spend a couple more bucks for Gosling's Black Seal or The Kraken

Or a few more on Zaya

Hard to beat Jim Beam 8 year (black) for middle shelf.

Jump down to the Evan Williams Black or green for a thumping.

I have like 18 bottles of hard liquor in my cabinet at home. I don't know why I have so much...I barely drink any of it. hahaha.

I plan to buy a house in the Spring so hopefully when I get my house and have my "man room" I can set up my little home bar and I'll probably have a better reason to drink it all. haha

Evan Williams SB Bourbon $17.99 :al

I'm with you on this one...the green label Evan Williams 1.75L is $14.99 and makes a great bourbon and coke.

New Amsterdam gin is really good for a cheap gin and tonic, it's around $22 for the 1.75L.

Captain Morgan Lime Bite makes a decent Cuba Libre without having to keep limes around (but who am I kidding, I'm a raging alcoholic, I always have limes around). It's ~$25 for the 1.75L.

With Peter on this one, Svedka is a solid vodka and frequently 16.99 for a 1.75. Usually go for tequila myself, have found milagro silver for 19.99 for 750 and costco Kirkland brand anejo liter is 23.99, both good.

Oh I forgot one Ezra Brooks it's like the sister/cousin to Jim Beam, I can't remember the price but I think it's under $15 for a fifth and I can drink it straight unlike beam.

I like N.A. gin too. Different flavor profile. Much more orange/citrus than juniper. $17 for 750ml or about $23 for 1.75L is pretty cheap.

Pretty much only ever get Svedka, Stoli or Smirnoff (maybe it is an 'S' thing). Ocassionally Dipping Springs or Titos from Austin

Bourbon/Whiskey
I am a 95% Jack Daniels guy. Ocasionally I will get Weller Reserve.

Scotch
Balvenie Doublewood was my first and still my favorite.

Rum
Sailor Jerry

Gin
Tanqueray with the lime (whatever it is called)

Barton's Irish Whiskey $14.99/1L Made by Cooley, better than both Jameson and Bushmill's base offerings IMO. I alternate between Barton's and Powers ($19/750mL), but I have 1 opened and 2 unopened Liters of Barton's in the cupboard right now, so I guess it is my current favorite.

Some other reviews and awards if MY opinion isn't good enough for you. :sl

http://www.whiskyintelligence.com/2011/08/luck-of-the-irish-prevails-as-barton-irish-whiskey-wins-silver-and-bronze-medals-in-spirits-competitions/

I also enjoy alternating between $15-$20 bourbons such as Weller Antique S.B. from Cork and Bottle, Evan Williams S.B., Four Roses Yellow, Very Old Barton, or Old Granddad 114.

N.A. gin is as good as others have mentioned, for the longest time a nearby store had it for $10 with a $2 mfr coupon hanging from the neck of the bottle. It hasn't replaced Hendrick's for me, but at 1/3 the price when mixed with tonic and lime it just makes sense.

For sipping rum it is Flor De Cana Grand Reserve (7 year). I like this better than the Ron Z or the Z brands and its around $18 - $20 a bottle.

My runaway fave for bottom-shelf is Forty-Creek Barrel Select Cdn whisky. Secondary maturation in (cdn) sherry casks, this is cheap and pretty good. It's not just me saying it either - John Hansell (Whisky Advocate) really likes it as do many whisky snobs.

I find the sherry finish stands up to even med - strength cigars.

If I could get some up here, I'd buy Weller 12yr...

That's actually a young Glen Garioch. McClelland's is a brand owned by Suntory-Bowmore that bottles their own whiskies.

Highland = Glen Garioch
Lowland = Auchantoshan
Islay = Bowmore
