I know there are a few "take a picture" threads.... but nothing with just Wineadors!!!

A lot of us guys are going the Wine Cooler route and I know I would love to see a thread of nothing but Wine Cooler Builds.

Seeing pictures of builds helps us members get an idea on how we want to move forward on our wineador builds and gives us a lot of ideas as well.

I think having a thread with nothing but pics of wine coolers be it big or small units would be awesome!

Forrest is making some sweet drawers and shelves now for wine coolers (WaxingMoon & Chasidor as well) , and who doesn't want to see some of the finished product as far as what people went with, the look of drawers and shelf combinations, and the style and finish.

I look forward to everyone posting their Wineador pics and please feel free to write a few details about your actual wine cooler unit, what you did during your build and the materials you used to complete it with (KL, Beads, Hygros, drawers, fans etc.).

Thanks so much guys, and get to putting up some of those pictures!!! :)

Huy, I think he was looking to start one for wineadors only, no humidors allowed. Love the humidor thread tho. Good idea Chris, I was looking to set one of these up and would love to see more.

Great looking wineador. Where did you get the shelves?

http://www.cheaphumidors.com/p_TRAY.html

Found the handles at lowes on clearance for a dollar a piece (they were perfect cause i wanted something the same brushed nickel kinda color and style as the handle on the cooler door)

I like the look and with 7 trays I can hold a bunch of singles and it all cost me a little over 70 bucks it all.

Using Exquisicat KL (about 3lbs) in a few media bags, used electrical tape to seal off the drain plug, an Oust fan at the bottom for circulation and 2 Caliber III digital Hygrometers / temp gauges to monitor the levels at the top and bottom.

Stayed rock steady at perfect Rh and the temp is just right set at the highest level of 66... it stays around 78.

I still want to get some drawers from forrest but this will work for now and I actually REALLY like the looks of this though and how it turned out.

Thanks so much for the compliment on my cooler bro.

I'd be careful with the cat litter. I'm pretty sure it won't absorb and also release humidity if there is "extra" humidity in the air. Lots of threads here on humidity and proper care ie: beads, sheets, ect.

Nope, the Exquisicat litter he is referencing works just fine. Absorbs and releases moisture and maintains rock solid humidity.

Hello folks. I just saw this thread the other day and have been looking at a lot of reviews for various wine coolers. This isn't a very expensive route (compared to regular coolers maybe but, compared to wooden boxes these aren't that much) BUT, the only problem that I'm having while reading these reviews is that a lot of people who have had these (the average seems to be about a year, some longer) is that they go bad, as in completely die out. So for those of you who've been using these for a while, what's your experience with this?

Mine is a 38 bottle Frigadaire compressor-driven that I modded for cigars. It'll get down to around 40 degrees if I want, I keep it at 70.
The drawers are of oak and poplar and they run on standard drawer glides, just like kitchen drawers. The bottom is left open for my travel humidors and boxes. It's not as deep as the rest of the unit because that's where the compressor sits, so a drawer didn't make sense.
I sewed up special HCM bead bags that fit perfectly without interfering with the way I like to stack cigars in my drawers. The drawer liner shown is actually for the bottom of the unit. There's a couple pounds of beads in it, I suppose.
I made a few of these modded units along the way. I got rid of a couple because it was too much. I keep this one because it's my desktop. :D

You're lookin at it, brother. I powered an ac adapter off the mains to drive the fans, they run 24/7. They are angled in such a fashion to dry the back of the unit which acts as the evaporator.
When I built the drawers I kept them short enough to allow airspace all behind them, then beneath them, so the air flows all around the unit. The drawers are open gapped on the sides to allow airflow.
It's all real simple, no rocket surgery whatsoever.

It's a start but if your anything like me it will be full and you'll be wanting bigger in a month or two. It's a slippery slope this hobby.... So after I started with my small 8 bottle cooler once it filled up in 30 days I said.... Screw It.... I'm just gonna bite the bullet and get the NewAir since it was only $180.

I have had the 28 bottle NewAir for about 2 or 3 months and its nearing full with my trays.... time to order some drawers from Forrest.

Whatever you decide brother will be a great start.

Let us know if we can help.

Should be a good start bro! It Thermoelectric so that good. With it only being 3 bottles wide though it wont be wide enough to fit say the cheaphumidor trays in but if your just using it for some boxes or some bags of singles it would work great.

Just make sure you get some beads. kitty litter in there for humidity and a digital hygrometer and you'll be set. You can get some cheap esquisicat kitty litter litter and 99 cent bags at petsmart and a cheap $7 walmart digital hygrometer to start off.

If you move forward on this and have any questions on how to build I would be happy to help. See my wine cooler build for some good details that may help you out a lot and answer some questions up front.

Hells yeah!!! That is an incredible price on a gorgeous unit. It's a $625 machine. I'd steal it right out from under you if I was in Florida right now.
It's compressor driven, but it can be modded to work like a charm by adding a couple computer fans powered by an AC adapter. The cost to convert it would be under 20 bucks. Free if you're resourceful.
You can leave everything else as is, you'd just need a bunch of beads or a hydra or both. (I'd use both, active and passive humidification combos always works best in big units.)
If you don't want it, buy it and send it to me!!! :D

Seriously, it's a steal. If you have use for something that big, grab it. If you don't, grab it anyways. One of the Florida crew is bound to take it off your hands. :tu

shilala
11-03-2011, 12:13 PM
I'd probably use it for Lisa's wine, myself. I got her a Frigidaire wine cooler for her wine that's the same as I use for my drinks and winador. I modded the ones for my drinks and cigars. They work great and hold up great. There's no reason they won't last forever.
Same goes for the Danby. Thermoelectrics are generally very cheaply made, replaceable units. They aren't intended to last long and usually don't. They don't work in hot rooms, either. This Danby would work anywhere. :tu

When I first got into cigars a friend at work gave me this humidor. I didn't know anything about seasoning them and by the time I figured it out, I had stashed this thing away.

I'd like to use it to store the stuff I burn through on a regular basis. So I dug it out of the garage last night and started to season it. I kind of played around with this before... but I didn't give it much time back then, but it never really sealed that well. My goal is to try seasoning this for the duration of November.

Any tips tricks I can consider to help there? I was thinking about maybe some kind of weather stripping or something?

If someone is truely interested in this unit and are not to far away...I could be game for a short road trip for delivery.

I already ran the numbers and if it were possible, I'd be at your house tomorrow:D Awesome gesture none the less:tu

I've already called the local ABC in Chattanooga. No dice.

STEPHEN ..... Jump On That Bad Boy!!!

Would make a killer wineador if set up right.... if you have a cool area to keep it like a basement etc. then you can just use it like a regular air tight seal humidor and not turn it on.

That unit is absolutely beautiful for that price.

Mine - it doesn't keep anything cool, but that's not an issue for me as my basement stays pretty chilly year-round...and I can't complain for $30 off Kijiji. I've "hotwired" the fan that circulates air between the top and bottom compartments to cycle with the Hydra and the two small fans that I've got plugged into it.

yeah, believe it or not, i wanted to downsize.. Got rid of a few things i didnt "love".

and also, i have another arisocrat cabinet and most of my stuff fits into there. These wine coolers arent very deep, so i can only get one box deep, where the aristocrat i can fit two deep..

so i have the one wine cooler left for odds and ends..

I love that door Peter!

It seems I stumbled and slid further down the slope today. The wife and I were out wandering through a few stores and I came across a used 8 bottle wine cooler for $14 (Haier HVUE08ABS, thermo electric). I turned it on and it blew cold air and was in good condition, so I figured WTH. The wife passed on it for wine, so I get to keep it! Either I'll seal up the drain in the bottom, toss in a pound of beads and use it as a humi or use it to keep the temps perfectly balanced for my desktop humi that I keep all my best smokes in. Either way here it is:

I wiped down everything with some extremely diluted dishsoap, the put. A couple of bowls of baking soda in there and ran it for a few days. I then filled it with newspaper an left it off for a few days, and that seemed to take most of the smell out. Once I put some cedar in there, I couldn't notice the smell anymore.

Hey guys...is spanish cedar absolutely necessary for the drawers? Or can I use any wood that isn't too aromatic?

I believe that Spanish cedar is recommended for storage of your cigars. It retains a lot of humidity and is good when storing your smokes.

There are other reason but I will let another brother chime in on what they know.

I have seen some others build drawers for there wine cooler with some different kind of wood but only a couple.

If you are still doing the small 6 bottle unit have you looked at cheaphumidors.com spanish cedar trays? Thats what I have in my cooler and they are only $10 shipped.

Yeah I had already looked around but the wine cooler I have, I can only fit a tray that's about 7 inches wide with about 15 inches deep. My fiance got it for me after I told her of my intentions of getting one...but didn't have it in me to ask her to return it :D

There are 7 1/2" x 12 1/2" ...... so you can turn them sideways and your depth of 15 inches is good .... but you only have EXACTLY 7" wide? .... I just measured mine to make sure their measurements were exact and they are.

Well .... if you need something and dont mind spending at best only a couple bucks more try hitting up Forrest (GolfNut) about making you some trays that will fit perfect in cooler .... or maybe a couple drawers if you want to spend a little more!

He will make Anything as long as you provide the dimensions

He can make you some trays that are 7x13 I'm sure for the price he charges for the 8x13 ... and they are still only $10 .... just like the cheaphumidor ones (I think shipping is a flat 15$).

Hope this helps point you in the right direction for getting your cooler set up with some new spanish cedar brother.

When I get my drawers I plan on taking my 7 trays and placing all of them with a couple ziplock bags full of my overstock and throwing it all in a Coleman cooler with my bags of KL and a hygro to just make sure they are stable for a couple of days while the new drawers are in the wine cooler getting seasoned with a couple of soaked DW sponges in each drawers with a bag under it .... Just like they say to season a regular humidor.

Then of course taking them out of the Coleman once the Rh is a bit high and stables and throwing them all in their new home.

Apparently, for this particular Haier model, the space inside actually GETS SMALLER going towards the back! So what you see in the picture is the farthest it'll go in without having to really push to get it in(that's what she said). That Sucks brother!

Just a thought ... that cedar os pretty thick ... if you have a pad sander you may be able to sand down that end real good to more of a point with some low grit paper, then once it fits (as well as it can) use some fine high grit paper to finish it off.

You said you can push it in so you may not have to sand down to much.

Just the first thought that came to my mind.

Great looking tray though Forrest ... as always from what I have seen ... Amazing Craftsmanship!

It's not just your Haier, brother. Every single winador I've ever modified tapers toward the back. They taper in on both sides, not just one. You have to get slot measurements from close to the back of the units.
Sometimes they are so far off that the trays/drawers have to be double tapered.
Some units don't taper a lot, so it's no big. The grooves in the sides are deep enough to make up for the difference. In others, like yours, you have to make adjustments.

Ohh your way good to go brother! I only seasoned mine a couple days till it was 80 something % then by the time I put in the KL and the sticks it dropped down to high 60's and within a couple days came down into the 63-65% range and has sat there since!

No ... way to long, 3 to maybe 5 days is normally well enough to have your SC fully seasoned .... as long as your Rh is kinda high so when you load up the cooler it is able to come down a bit and stable out. Make sure you have a good digital hygrometer to keep track of it and start off with dry beads/KL till the Rh comes down then spritz em as needed to get it where want it (best is around 92-95%).

But you are good to go to load it up brother! :banger

The trays are the large cedar trays from Forrest and I just added some handles to them. They fit pretty darn good for the price. I couldn't justify the drawers (almost bought them) since I only paid $30 for the fridge

i figured with all the new coolers on here, why not fire my old cooler up, and add some trays again, like old times.. my aristocrat was getting too jammed up, so i figured why not use this for now...

but this time, i added a shelf on the bottom to space it out better and to have a drain galley for any moisture to collect. i used 3 7/8th thick powdercoated L-brackets, and a piece of plexi. and then i had a piece of plexi cut 7/8th thick to cover the front, so it looks stealth.. in the pics, you cannot even tell that its there

and then i filled it with cigars..

Edgestar and vinotemp are probably the most commonly used, although any thermoelectric wineador will get the job done.

Vino's are the cream of the crop ... but way to expensive (but some say and it could be true they last longer then cheaper units)

the most common as of late actually are NewAir and Edgestar ... they can be had for anywhere from $100 - 200 bucks (the lower end is refurbished and dent and scratch edgestar models from Compact Appliance).

You can find New Air from Air and Water Inc and the Edgestar at Compact Appliance for the best prices online.

If buying always look for coupon codes for discounts and % off.

In my opinion, finding used Vino's on Craigslist is the way to go. You can typically find VT-28's for $100.

Hello everyone. This is my first post, but I have been reading a lot of threads. Thanks for all of the info, especially on wineadors.

History:
I used a desktop humidor.
The humidity was fine, but it stayed at over 80 degf for a large portion of the day where my cigars are located.
I saw the wineador threads and my journey began.

Being the thrifty person I am, I found a compressor version of a Vinotemp for $30 at a local second hand shop. It was okay, but condensation was hard to deal with.

I bought a Vinotemp 28 from Home Depot for $319.
Let it air out for a couple of week using baking soda and smell is gone.
I bought beads from Heartfelt.
I also bought a Hydra SM Humidifier and three fans from Heartfelt.
And, I ordered Shelfs from a member.
Being a few weeks out on shelf/drawer delivery, I needed temporary shelves.
I bought three plastic food cutting boards from a local overstock place.
Cut them down to size.
Then, I screwed a Hydra SM Humidifier fan into the back of each shelf.
I installed the shelves and hooked up the fans which only operate when the Hydra SM Humidifier comes on, and put the beads and cigars in.
I ran the power for the Hydra SM Humidifier through the Vinotemp drain by cutting the wire and reconnecting the cord outside the Vinotemp.
A little trick that I used the get the wire trough the existing drain: Cutting about 2 feet of nylon string, I stuffed about one inch of the string down the drain from the inside and blew compressed air through the drain, again, from the inside. The string came shooting out the back of the unit in less than a second. Used the string to pull the cord through from the inside out.
It should look nicer when I get the Spanish cedar shelves/drawers.
Here is the result.

Please tell me anything that looks wrong to you. I absolutely will NOT be offended by any criticism. I want to do it right.
And, feel free to ask any questions.

The shown inventory includes:
Partagas Spanish Rosado
Macanudo Cafe
Padilla Habano
Romeo y Julieta Reserva Real
Gurkha Grand Reverse (cognac infused)
Alex Bradley Tempest
Tampa Humidor Factory Throwouts (for golf course)

I WILL be adding more.

I think im gonna copy your set up sorry but its so badass i cant help my self. Are those trays you use the 12 1/2 x 7 1/2 x 2 1/4 trays from cheap humidor??? Is that the right size. And how much space is back there. Would it be worth it to go thrugolfnut and get his deeper trays??? Would i still have room for beads/kl in back with his or no???? Thanks though super pumped to give this a whirl

It's installed in a wetbar in the basement/mancave. I even had a dedicated electric outlet installed in the space it was installed but have never plugged it in. Being in the basement, temps have always been just fine. It's been installed for almost 2 years. Temps are always perfectly stable, plus or minus 1 degree from 68 F.

Got rid of the safidor before the move, went with a winador this time. Not bad. Like the separate sides, nice to keep different humidity. Not thermoelectric but it isn't plugged in anyways. Basement stays cool. Multicolor led lights from Costco. Shelves are a perfect fit for the wire racks, got lucky there.

Well after days of washing and getting rid of the plastic smell, filling it with cedar sheets and empty boxes, I have moved a couple boxes into the winador. I have 3 of the cheap trays coming monday from cheaphumidors, and I have a set of trays and shelves coming from forrest in a few weeks.

The Oliva boxes have some various sticks in them right now, nothing 'too good', I'm still a bit nervous about moving more sticks in, I have another pound of HMBeads coming (1lb in and some packs for now), I have 2 good Hygrometer also arriving monday. Right now the single hygrometer is showing 69% HM and 65 degrees, so right around the "130 rule", I'm going to watch the humidity like a hawk before I actually put things in it that I like / have money invested in.

Oh well it's a start!

You bastages, refer to the first picture, once seasoned this will be full. I've acquired 40+ sticks at the Great Smoke last weekend, and they are still in the travel cooler they came in. The pics of the empty drawer were to show off the craftsmanship and the removable tray.

Ya know...I've examined every picture and there are no actual cigars to be seen. Oh, there are boxes that may, or may not, contain cigars, but who can say? :sh
