Is there a way to interface iMail with either gmail or yahoo mail?
I want to download my mail from their servers and manage/backup my mail on my own machine.
Any help is apprecated.

Peter, do you mean the stock mail app that comes with your Mac (with the stamp icon)?

You can use imap for gmail.
Which version of OS X are you running?

Mail app on Apple is just a general email client, you use that client to connect to an actual mail server. Who is your email provider? I would go to their site and look up how to configure other mail clients.
Unless, I don't understand your question.
Scratch all that, I misunderstood. Others provided a good answer.

Peter try this out for your gmail: http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=81379
You need to turn on IMAP in your gmail settings first.
Peter,
Gmail:
-In your web browser, log into your gmail account
-Click on the picture of the gear in the top right corner of the screen, next to your account name. This will bring down a menu, choose "Account Settings"
-Fifth option from the left on the account settings is "Forwarding and POP/IMAP"
-Enable POP or IMAP as appropriate and click on the "configure your email client" link for configuration instructions in the appropriate section for a link to how to set up Apple Mail.
Yahoo:
-Send them money for "Yahoo Plus" so you can download your mail and get additional functionality that amounts to about 1/3 of what Gmail already does for free.
(Free Yahoo accounts can't do POP or IMAP)

Yahoo mail does not play well with others.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. Looks like gmail will work.
I'm considering ditching TimeWarner/Roadrunner which I have had for 30 years.
