View Full Version : How do you buy your smokes?

Besides the obvious as in having a good job and making plenty of money, how do you buy your smokes? Do you buy boxes? Singles? Or Samples?

Reason I am asking, I was talking to a co-worker today and he mentioned that he is in need of some more smokes and says he usually buys 3 boxes at a time....I was floored.

I said how can you afford that and he told me that when gets a smoke he puts a $5.00 bill in his humidor, but the time it comes time to buy a box he has about $200.

This sounds like a great Idea to me....anyone else?

If I did that somedays it would be $5 and others I would have to put in $45-50 on a good herfing day.

I usually buy by the box or if I can, multi-box splits....

I usually buy exclusively by the box or if a Monster deal comes up that's cheaper than the box then 4-5 5'ers of the same stick. :D Just did a 3 box split :)

Boxes, 10 counts or 25 counts.

I've only bought a few boxes, been awhile since I've gotten one. I usually buy singles to try out and then say I'll get a box of them but have yet to do that. I usually get some samplers or if its a cigar event it'll be like buy 3 get 1 free kind of thing.

I see you are new here. I too shared your mentality. Then a couple weeks ago I intended on only spending a couple hundred to restock a little (I quit smoking cigs and have been going through way more cigars now), and ended up getting close to $600 before I was done.

And not 1 regret. :D

I used to buy a lot of 5'ers but they go annoying to keep track of. Now I only buy boxes so that I get the date codes as wella s atidy box to hold them, and if I like them I know what I want more of. If I don't like them I let them rest for a long time then retry.
Buying boxes also keeps the buying ahead of the smoking, which makes for aged smokes, so it's win-win.
I'm building 2- 30"x16"deep wide singles shelves for the walk-in as we speak to hold all my stupid singles and 5'ers. Boxes rule.

All I know (at least my wife knows) is that I spend too much. I tend to buy samplers to get a mix and boxes of smokes I truly love. Rarely do I buy singles or go to B&M shops to buy cigars.

Mostly 2fer samplers, then. if I like something, I'll buy a 5er. Usually smoke rott, then put the rest away for at least a month or two. Only bought one box and it was an impulse buy thanks to the wording of the ad. Did smoke one of the impulse buys and actually liked it rott.

Agreed. I dont even own a credit card.

I typically get singles from the B&M's to try and if I like em enough, I'll put them on the list of boxes to buy.

I buy singles and fivers of new stuff I want to try or HTF sticks. I buy boxes of my go-to sticks. I also try to get in on box splits when they happen.

I buy boxes trying to catch discounts and save on international shipping. I usually add in a 5er to try new sticks. I always buy a stick when I'm in a local shop. I usually give these away.

I still only buy by singles, it became evident to me on Monday how poorly suited my humidor is for an entire box when I had to play tetris for a solid 15 minutes. Granted, who doesn't love playing tetris?

I usually pick up HTF/Rare stuff here and everything else comes from my local B&M. A combo of singles and boxes.

I love that place. I don't mind overpaying a bit to keep them in business :)

Sometimes I buy 1, sometimes more than one, sometimes 5 and others 20 or 25. I support my local B&M and keep a vault there. I buy on-line and use the WTS/WTB here. Wherever and however I can get my grubby little hands on them I buy them.

I buy boxes. I get lots of stuff here in WTS. Sometimes even singles to top off boxes or make certain groups of cigars I want.
I don't have a B&M. The last one I went to was nice, but the entire huge walkin was full of empty boxes. Literally. It was the craziest thing I ever saw.

I buy singles at my local B&M, and fivers and the occasional box online. As someone said earlier, I don't mind paying a little more to help keep the local shop in business. I look forward to being able to see the WTS/WTB forum here! I still have some empty space in my Vigilant.....
Best regards,
Murray

Where is this WTS/WTB section? Am I missing something or do I just not have the clearance yet?

Right now, I buy singles at the local liquor store, or when I get to a good B&M, singles there.

Going to try samplers when I get a chance.

My wife allows me about $20 a week for incidentals at work. I am setting some of that aside as cigar money. If we have enough in the account after bills are paid, I can "play" a little.

Once my CCs are paid down, I'll have a little more wiggle room. I have to be careful, especially with the Bass Pro Shops openng up in October. I won't go crazy (yet).

Although I would like to preview the cigar in which I'm interested by buying a 5-er from my B&M, both to support him and to get an idea of what the cigar is like, doing so means I drop ~1/3 of the value of a box in that purchase, and I don't have the money to do that and buy a box. This is a wonderful B&M with an outstanding humidor, but you have to gently twist the owner's arm to get a discount on a 5 cigar purchase; he normally charges you 5 Xs the singles price, and I dislike the arm twisting.

Also, as I don't have the money to pay his prices on a box, about 40% higher than the cost from the lowest price e-tailer, I've never bought a box from him and doubt that I ever will, although I've tried. For instance I got a box of the Don Carlos Presidente for $208.00; when I ran that number past him I was told that getting the box through him for that price was dreaming.

Also, about 50% of the time, a 5-er is an inadequate preview; in these cases I need to smoke 10-15 cigars to judge a cigar.

Instead what I do read 3 pages of Google output of reviews of the cigar, get a consensus of how the cigar performs, and make my decision. Only unusually do I get cigars that I don't like.

I usually buy big samplers on line. I get singles at the local b&m, usually when I go in I smoke one in the lounge and take two home. I have been out of the cigar world for about 20 yearss, as the divorce didn't leave me enough money to smoke what I enjoy. Now that I can afford it (again), I've found the brands have all changed, as has my palete. I will start buying bundles or boxes soon, as I have found pretty much what I'd like to smoke on a regular basis at a decent price, but will continue buying samples, singles and fivers because I love the variety!

I love to go to a B&M shop and drool at the selection. I love that smell of opening the humidor door and the rush of scents that come out as I step in! Mmmm...I love it.

Sorry, I zoned out for a minute. Seriously though, I love to try cigars from my B&M store and if I like it, I'll consider a box. I also like samplers to try new things since I'm definitely a noob. I've only bought a couple of boxes in my life, but I'm sure that will change as I get into this addiction!

Really???
Here's how I do it...
Smoke cigar. It's either good enough for a box purchase, or not. In very remote instances I'll smoke two before making a box purchase decision. In 100% of those situations, I don't buy a box.
But really, 10 or 15 cigars to make up your mind? I think you're jerking our collective chain, or you've not been made aware that there's hundreds, if not thousands of other cigars to move on to. If a cigar doesn't make you shine the first time, don't doddle, brother. There's likely 14 gems you're missing while you're guessing if you like that first cigar.

Bill86
08-21-2011, 05:30 PM
I'm with Scott, I smoke one cigar. If I like it I buy a box, if I don't I move on to others.

Sometimes another one will randomly come my way via trade or a friend wants me to give it a second shot and if it's good it was meant to be and I'll get a box. If not it further reinforces the fact that the cigar is not for me.

Other than that there is maybe 2-3 peoples opinions I trust (based solely on flavor profile) and a maybe 1-2 reviewers I trust.

I refuse to buy 10-15 cigars to make up my mind on a box. That's about half a box right there. May as well have bought it and probably got a good enough deal that it would be 25% more to get a full box instead of half.
