Here I sit at 8:30 PM Central time in Wisconsin, and the temp is still 89 with a dewpoint of 80 producing a heat index of 105. This seldom happens here and sounds like it's going to be worse over the next few days.

The temp at 1300 today was 100 degrees with a heat index of 109. The winters here are killing my tolerance for the summer heat of the south. I wish I was back in Georgia.

finally got about 60 degrees in Portland this afternoon. Got 3/4 inch of rain, which is unheard of in July. Drying out now for our 82 degree day tomorrow (can you say "sauna"?). Then back to 70.

Cooled of a bit here this weekend but the forecast shows we'll be back in the heat again this upcoming week. This weekend was actually kind of enjoyable for a change and I took advantage by taking a two hour nap out in the hammock earlier before the outlaws came over for dinner. Last week it was 92 at 10:30pm a couple of nights. I don't even want to see my electric bill for this month as the last week and a half were pretty brutal and I felt like the A/C was running all day and looks like this reprieve will be gone tomorrow.

I'm in northern mn. And it's been brutal. I don't live here for 100+ temps and high humidity. We shouldn't have any type of "heat index". Here we're supposed to have "wind chill".

It sucks, because I won't go out to smoke in this either. When it gets above 80, I start to melt.

I'm in SE Tennessee. What do you think? :r

Yeah - it is a bit warmish (95+ for the last 2 or 3 weeks except for rainy days). And it is humid enough that I could just dump my cigars on the ground outside and they'd smoke just fine after a few days.

I prefer the cold but these temperatures just come with the longitude.

With a good dehumidification system it shouldn't, but yes most of the older rinks will get foggy if they haven't updated their system. Was at my son's game a few summers ago that got cancelled due to foggy conditions. Couldn't see much further than 10-15 feet. Not good when your kid is the goalie.

Heat indexes here today around115-117. Should be a fun day/night doubleheader for the Twins v Indians today.

At 4:30 AM this morning, it was 79 degrees with 94% humidity. Swam outside at the Y, and almost couldn't tell the difference between the air and the water.

Supposed to be 96 today with a heat index over 110. I love the heat, but hope it's MUCH cooler on Sunday for my race.

Saw LOTS of condensation on windows on houses the last few days. It was really bad down at the Excel Energy center (where the Wild play) on Saturday night.

Yeah, I gotta agree, the only place I've been that is more miserable than Texas in summer is Florida. I remember packing the car up after one trip visiting friends in Orlando, it was 4am and I was sweating way more than anybody should be at that time of day w/out any sun shining. And that was north Florida.

For Wisconsin, that's just WRONG.

We had our two best days of the previous 3 weeks with a 93 and 94 degree day Sat and Sun. Back to
business as usual for the Midsouth today, with heat indices all week north of 105, and temps between 97 and 100.
We are used to it but obviously do not prefer it. And when I say used to it, we do our yard work before 8am and
retreat to our air-conditioned homes for an afternoon of television...naught but the dogs and homeless can be said
to be used to it, because they have no retreat.

You know a SURPRISINGLY hot state every summer is NC....somehow they manage to always top 103 in actual temps
every year for a couple days. Strange.

Still 10 degrees below normal, week after week here. They say it might get to normal next week. This is two years in a row. Record snowfall staying in the mountains. Our cold is causing the hot in the center of the country, or v-v.

I am already sick of the term "heat index", it is completely subjective and unscientific. It means no more than saying "damn hot" or "really damn hot". It's like saying the water seems deeper if it is freezing cold as compared to lukewarm. "Feels like" to one person is not the same as to another.

Blak Smyth

I may be wrong but I believe actuall temp does not take into account humidity. The heat index simply accounts for the other factors and gives you a more realistic temperature. Yes the term is kind of annoying but relevent on days like today.

Example 99 degrees without humidity is much cooler than 99 degrees with 60% humudity yet, the temperature will remain the same.

Found this and it makes sense that it wouldn't be accurate for everybody however it still makes more sense than straight temperature readings. I do see how somebody could argue either side:
Measurements have been taken based on subjective descriptions of how hot subjects feel for a given temperature and humidity, allowing an index to be made which relates one temperature and humidity combination to another at a higher temperature in drier air.
The heat index contains assumptions about the human body mass and height, clothing, amount of physical activity, thickness of blood, sunlight and ultraviolet radiation exposure, and the wind speed. Significant deviations from these will result in heat index values which do not accurately reflect the perceived temperature.
