View Full Version : Let it rest?

So, I just got a shipment of about 25 sticks yesterday, RP and Fuente samplers, I don't like to smoke my new cigars right away, and I know a lot of you guys talk about letting them rest for a while after they arrive.

My question is, why? I do it just because I don't like smoking straight out of shipping, but what other pros come with resting your newly delivered babies?

Most places ship cigars "wet" and letting them rest allows them to acclimate to your humidor and your conditions.

But if they taste and smoke good....smoke 'em.

Because most shippers do not ship humidified, or ship them from their storage at a higher RH. You want to give them time to reach the proper humidity. I just got some VOR DTs from Fullers Pullers that were ship humidity controlled, gonna smoke one tomorrow..

Most times cigars aren't shipped under optimal conditions. Giving them a few weeks to adjust to your storage conditions will make them smoke better.

Amazing, two opposing opinions here?

The main point is, cigars do not arrive in optimal smoking condition most of the time. Vendor, shipping and conditions can all affect the cigar. Allowing them to rest gets them acclimated to your specific conditions that you like to smoke.

As always YMMV.

Cigars often have to fly a long way to get to your home. They are tired and need a few days or weeks of sleep. :banger

I thought that three years was the aging cap? Try starting with three weeks to let your sticks stabilize. If you really want aged cigars, you'll start noticing age after three months.

The comment was made that some sticks are delivered humidity controlled.
Is there a way to know if an order is good to smoke right away or not? Or should you just rest them all?
Currently I am just putting them away as long as I can keep patient, hasn't worked out so well yet. I will be out of rested cigars after this weekend.

Smoke one and find out. You can try and tell by the feel or sponginess of the cigar or the amount of sheen on the wrapper, but smoking one is the best way to really know if they're good to go.

I always let my cigars acclimate for at least a week in my humidor.

Patience is always rewarded.

Buy more than you can smoke, then you are golden. That's the trick to aging cigars. ;)

I let mine rest at least 2 weeks to acclimate to my preferred conditions or till the ammonia smell goes away. (if it's present) If I can, I will wait a month. You can notice the difference. I have always been dissapointed when smoking them right away.

I am trying but the cigar elves keep stealing them from my humidor.

No, as in the shine caused by the tobacco oils on the wrapper.

With box purchases I will usually smoke one ROTT just because I am impatient and than will tuck the rest away for at least 3 weeks. I usually smoke that first one so I'm not staring into the cabinet at them with lust and envy because I didn't get to smoke them yet and just need to get it out of my system. I'm like a child with a new toy when I get new cigars delivered.

Very well put. If you're not sure and want a single, grab a 5'er. If you like them and want 5, buy 10. If you want 10, buy a box. Soon you won't have to worry about letting them rest because you'll have so many others to smoke.
The only darwback is you've just started a collection which will outgrow all forecast storage, so buy my fridges! LOL

Because it is summer time and everything needs enough time to sit in my fridge, then my freezer, then my fridge again, and then get up to humidity. :)

agree with everything said above about the shipment ... but besides I have one more reason for that... I do not like to buy a lot of cigars at once, I have a small humidor, but I love some cigars left for later, mostly those that I liked, in order to have always the opportunity to enjoy them :)

Agreed. Though I "rest" my cigars once received. As my reward, I almost always smoke one prior to "resting" the balance of my order (2 - 4 week period). The end result is (almost always) better than the cigar that was smoked immediately after receipt.
Just my $0.02

Too wet.

But I suppose if they were in shipment for quite a while they could easily be too dry......

Too wet.

But I suppose if they were in shipment for quite a while they could easily be too dry......

They can really go either way--too wet if they were stored at a very high humidity and didn't dry out much during the trip, too dry if they were stored at "normal" conditions and did dry out. Either way, wet or dry, smokes arriving in the mail are not at the same conditions as the sticks inside your humidor that you're used to smoking, so let them rest a bit to equilibrate either way.

All of these guys Nailed it, And I agree with them 100%. I have gotten a few sticks that were over humidified and a few that were dry. So it depends on what the seller keeps them at, how long are in transit etc.

I don't ever smoke cigars as soon as I get them as I put them in the freezer for at least a week, and then let them re-stabilize in the fridge for two days until I put them in my humidor for another resting session lasting at least a month.
