61 in a 40. I'm not happy by any means but have no one to blame but myself. Just sucks I suppose. I have a court date but have the option just to pay it and I'm leaning more towards going that route.

Yep. Georgia is bad too. I know when my wife and I lived in SC we would frequent Savannah often. I alway stuck to exactly the limit in GA.

The worst part was I didnt realize it, like I wasn't weaving in and out I was just driving, and then all of the sudden BOOM.

I am to, I'm more pissed that it's my first after 4 years. But again its my fault. Oh well it was bound to happen sooner or later haha.

How do those radars work anyway when your running them, because the cop was driving in the opposite direction when he nabbed me, is it just a continuous radar?

yup. the radar in my car is a 2X which means i can clock people in front and behind me at the same time.

also the radar can read you closing speed (coming at you) or away speed.

and like you found out can do it mobile or stationary.

its never a good day when you get a ticket and all the advise i can offer you is to be repectful and honest and see what happens. cops and judges are people too so we do have a soft side.

that is unless you got stopped by robocop. :D

cheer up buddy. smoke a cigar and lets put the past behind.

Isn't it all lasar anymore?

Isn't it all lasar anymore?

lasers are handheld units. most the motorcycle guys will use them. problem with laser is that you have to aim it and hit a car. good thing is its is very accurate and almost impossible for it to set off a radar detector. with my radar i can read 2 speeds in each direction (4 cars total) without have to aim anything just point my car and the antennas in the direction of the cars.

can't you do defensive driving or deferred adjudication?

SmokeyJoe

A lawyer can cost you a little up front... but can usually get it reduced down where it wont affect your insirance so much. Helps in the long run.

Sorry for the troubles.

Doesn't GA have some sort of super speeder law? I think I remember reading that on the flashing signs on the highway, I remember thinking it would suck getting caught, because the fines were pretty hefty.

Worst I have ever gotten was 98 in a 70. I was happy to just take the hit and keep going because I passed the cop doing about 120.

50 over carries a 1,000 dollar fine and mandatory court here in Florida (criminal citation). Not uncommon to see the license get suspended cause of the excess of speed especially if there is a careless or reckless citation also.

First ticket, I remember my first ticket...my second, third.......fourth, fifth....I think I'm up to roughly 7-8 right now.

My worst I was doing 135 in the 70 but the cop failed to clock me even close. I got a ticket for 95. Meh, guy treated me like I was hauling cocaine and underaged Ukrainian hookers in the trunk. Not a cool guy.

I blew it off. Paid the ticket. If you ever actually go to court ALWAYS say guilty, but say guilty with explanation.

NEVER say you were innocent, even if you were. The system is rigged and stupid....you will lose every time.

Do try to get driving school though man, you really don't want the points. Your insurance will go up....eventually they will even try to price you out of insurance (aka 5G's a year for basic coverage)

Of course that takes like 6 tickets in 2 years.

Don't worry about it, but definitely read up and understand your state laws.

I've been pulled over once when I was 18, 70 in a 50. That's when I decided it was an incredibly stupid way to spend my money. Worst part was the officer was the uncle of a kid that my parents had taken in for over 4 years, I figured he would let me off... he didn't. And not only that he pulled my brother over in the same spot a half hour later with the kid in the car and gave him a ticket too :r

Now I drive a 4 cylinder tacoma so I pretty much can't speed even if I wanted to :D

When I got mine I was able to get it down to a no points ticket as it was my first time. I did not go before a judge but there was someone I had to go in and talk to at the city of which I got the ticket from. Might be worth looking into to avoid the points.

Back in '03, I got a ticket in a speed trap. The speed limit went from 35 to 25 for like a half a mile and the speed limit signs were behind utility poles. I got ticked for 45 in a 25. It pissed me off, but I figured taking it to court wouldn't work b/c the cop was in the traffic unit and I was in Florida the day of court.

Knock on wood, I haven't gotten a ticket since... and that is a miracle b/c I am known to sometimes have a lead foot.

35 in a 30 is rough. Esp. since most speedometers are off a bit- cops will usually give you 5 or 10 mph. I remember a Cinci cop telling me he gave people 15- because after that they had no excuses.

I got my ticket by rolling through a stop sign from a strip mall onto a feeder road that led onto the main road. I saw the cop had somebody with him- probably just showing the supervisor he was alert!

I find that if you stay with traffic you should be ok. Never be a leader!

I'll remember NOT to speed in FL. Here in this county in MI 50 over is well the fine schedule doesn't say it only goes to 31-40 over which is $190 :r Most people think a certain speed is criminal in MI, well it's not. Careless maybe...reckless if we can prove it but other than that not criminal.

Got pulled over once and the cop asked where I was coming from and I said from the Milwaukee police academy graduation. My boyfriend at the time just graduated. He was like OK. He checked my license and was like I am off work in 30 so get out of here!! SCORE!!

Not sure if GA is like NC but here if you get a ticket the mailbox is stuffed with letters from Lawyers shortly after. Also here in NC if you do hire a lawyer 99% of the time they knock it down to a faulty equipment ticket. My wife received her first ticket shortly after moving here. 15 over the posted speed limit which would have definitely hit our insurance so the $300 for the lawyer for sure is saving us some money.

You can definitely fight and beat that one in court. 5 over could be a matter of calibration of the speedo. Hell I know my bike reads 8mph over what I am actually doing. I am surprised the LEO would waste his time and your wifes time writing a ticket for 5mph over. Sounds like he may have been having a bad day.:sh

I find that here in the Bay Area, you need to be acting like a fool behind the wheel to get caught most of the time.

As long as youre going with the flow of traffic, youre safe. Im never a leader in traffic, always a follower. FHP is no fun to deal with.

call the magistrate and ask if there is anything you can do to reduce the ticket to a non-moving violation, this is the same thing the lawyer will charge you $300 to do and they get these calls all day long, no big deal,

for the 5 over just go to a garage that can test speedometers and tell them that your wife got a ticket for going 5 over the limit, see if they and help you out. they can write a statement that it was off by such and such amount and the driver was under the impression they were traveling at such and such speed. most judges will throw this out

Sounds like a speed trap. Most places I've been don't even pull you over unless you are doing close to 10 over.

When we were still living on Long Island the norm was if your driving on the L.I.E more often than not you won't get stopped unless you were doing at least 25 over. The majority is doing a minimum of 15 over when passing a patrol car.
I once got out of a speeding ticket because I told the cop I was about to crap my pants and was rushing home. Not sure if he believed me but he got a chuckle and let me go nonetheless.

I got a ticket last July for doing exactly 10 mph over the speed limit on a deserted stretch of well maintained two lane state highway. It was a bright, sunny dry day and I had my cruise control set at 60 because that's what the speed limit was all along that highway... except I had missed the sign knocking it back to 50 about 1/4 mile before I got stopped. Long story short - I called, got the price, paid the amount I was told to pay. Received a letter back from the local DA saying that since I paid so quickly the ticket would not be reported to my insurance company. Nice way to run a speed trap.

Just last week, I was riding my Harley on a long straight road and let my speed get 25 mph above the limit and was pulled over.

Not an excuse, but I had a lot on my mind and was out for a ride to clear my head.

As always, I was respectful and honest and handed my license as requested by the officer.

Luckily, my record is perfectly clean as he returned and mentioned I don't seem to be a bad guy and should slow it down, which I will.

I also showed my PBA card as my brother is a police officer, which may have also helped, but not certainly.

Back in 2000 I was tagged for 75 in a 55 in Union County. Reckless driving, and mandatory court appearance. I had a lawyer appear in my behalf and had it knocked down like you said: Defective equipment.

...buddy of mine when he was about 20 years younger had a Pontiac GTO with a heavily worked over engine....big block, 400+CI, making a little over 500 HP. He worked at a place making motor homes, which sat a few miles down a straight road outside a little town in OR. At lunch, they used to head into the little town, as there was a Dairy Queen there with a drive up that had great burgers.

One sunny day, he did the usual, got his burgers, and headed out. He looked right.....looked left....and dropped the hammer coming out of DQ. Now, this car would do 135+ very quickly....which I'm sure he did. Got out of town, headed down the long straight road to his work, and really let the thing stretch it's legs.

As usual, he parked at the far edge of the parking lot, away from other cars. About halfway across the parking lot headed back to work, here comes a state trooper down the road with his lights on. He pulls up to my buddies car and stops; my buddy heads back across the parking lot, not sure what's up. "..is that your car?.." the trooper asks. "Yes, it is", my buddy replies.

"....didn't look behind you in the Dairy Queen drive up, did you?..." asks the trooper......:D
