Cooled Cabinet Humidor Project

I’ve been dreaming about cabinet humidors since I bought my first cooler about 3 years ago. I don’t have a big collection and the coolers in the basement have served me well, but I was recently presented with a unique opportunity that was too good to pass up.

My brother-in-law is taking a fine woodworking course and one of the second year requirements is to build a commission piece. We’ve spent the last few months designing and construction should start next week.

It’s basically a large armoire style cabinet with upper and lower doors separated by two external drawers. I’m using solid black walnut with walnut burl for the door panels. I went with the Accumonitor system for humidity control with two 260 btu thermoelectric cooling units. For lights I have some LED light strips that will be activated by a door switch.

I’ve included an original concept sketch we did few months back. We’ve made some small changes but the general idea is the same. I’ve enjoyed seeing some of the other projects so I thought I would post some construction photos as things progress. Just a warning; it will probably take 3-4 months to complete.

Any comments/suggestions/questions are welcome.

Jon

Nice... keep us posted for sure... I will be looking for a way to cool my cab come spring time so I might ask you how yours ends up working out. :D

Be sure to account for the thermoelectric sinks generating a lot of condensation inside the cabinet from the moisture in the air. IE you don't want that running down the sides of your cabinet or getting things wet directly.

I gave a similar project some thought a while back, and ended up adding a small drip tray immediately below the TE sinks made of some PVC cut lengthwise with end caps to form a small (1" pipe) gutter. I added a T coupler at one end and a step-down adapter to a piece of 1/4" food grade tubing that ran down the back corner and allowed me to direct the constant condensation drip back into the humidifier reservoir.

Other side things I would think of include adding some duct-work in the back corners (cover it with panels) that would allow you to wire two slow speed 120mm PC fans: one blowing air up to the top of the cabinet, one blowing air down to the bottom (with 1"-2" holes on an interval to allow air to circulate out and around the cigars). I decided that would be the most efficient way to move air around constantly to ensure even humidity. The other idea I had was a "false back" to the cabinet with large holes in it, behind which were fans blowing air around to keep it moving, but I ultimately decided ducting the corners was more space-efficient, and presented less problems should I ever need to make modifications or repairs.

AC outlets are almost a must-have unless you plan to wire the whole cabinet into one board and PSU and make the cabinet an actual appliance. My original idea used a 25' heavy guage outdoor extension cord that I cut one end from. I had planned to wire it to a junction box, where I would wire out two outlets on the inside, and then attach a high-efficiency, low-noise PC power supply to run the temperature control, thermoelectric system, and fans inside the unit.

Of course, time restraints meant I never got farther than some plans and drawings I did up years ago. Pity, I would have liked to finish that project.

Thanks for your post. I’ve obviously given this a lot of thought.

To deal with the condensation I’ve got a collection tray that will be mounted directly below the cooling units. I was going to add a length a tubing with some type of valve so I could drain the tray as needed. Depending on how much condensation is produced and how often I need to drain the tray I may look at other options.

For circulation I’ve left a 1”-2” gap between the shelves and the front and back of the cabinet. I have 4 small fans that will cycle on and off to circulate the air. I still need to find a timer that will let me adjust the on and off times. One of the reasons I went with the Accumonitor is the 4 separate humidification units that can be located throughout the cabinet. Between that and the fans I think should be okay.

I have a 24V DC power supply for the cooling units and a 12V for the lights, fans, and humidification. I plan on using a single AC plug-in that will go to a junction box and supply the DC power units.

Hopefully you find the time to finish your project one day.

Can you tell us more info about the TE units. Cost and purchase location?
The cooling units are from INB Thermoelectric, but I got the entire humidity and temperature control system from Matt at Avallo Humidors. Since I was starting from scratch and didn’t really know what I was doing I liked the idea of having a complete ‘kit’. I added the lights, a timer for the fans, a float switch for a low water indicator light and a second power supply. You can get the cooling units directly from INB for about $250/unit.

I'm going to use 1.5" thick rigid insulation. At first I was worried about the loss of storage space but I would rather have it function properly and lose a little space, especially since it's about 4 times the size I currently need.:)

I'm in Canada so there's not a lot of options. I went with http://www.amwoodinc.com. My BIL who is doing the woodworking has used them in the past on other projects and highly recommended them. I found places in the states that were cheaper but once I figured in the exchange rate, extra shipping and brokerage fees it wasn't worth it.

Not much has happened over the Christmas break but I thought I would add a brief update.

The Spanish cedar lining started this week. It's a frame and panel style lining with the frames providing solid attachment for the shelves and the vertical panels floating in the frames to allow for movement.

Here are some of the frames (the panel pieces haven't been cut yet)
http://www.cigarasylum.com/vb/picture.php?albumid=108&pictureid=1078

A lacquer finish was applied to the main walnut cabinet. Here's a picture showing the finish and one of the Spanish cedar frames.
http://www.cigarasylum.com/vb/picture.php?albumid=108&pictureid=1077

Dave has to jump on to another project for a few weeks so nothing new will be happening with the woodworking for a while. I'll be laying out and testing the electronics over the next few weeks.

Thanks for looking. I can't wait until this thing is done.

Well after a week or so off things are back on track and coming along nicely.

The cedar lining for the top, bottom and sides is finished. It's actually a separate box that sits inside the main cabinet.
http://www.cigarasylum.com/vb/picture.php?albumid=108&pictureid=1237
Here you can see the 'box' within a 'box' with a gap for the insulation and wiring.
http://www.cigarasylum.com/vb/picture.php?albumid=108&pictureid=1236
This is the start of the main control panel with the temp/humidity control as well as the fans, lights and a low water warning light.

Here's an overall shot
http://www.cigarasylum.com/vb/picture.php?albumid=108&pictureid=1238

We're going to add the insulation and start running wires next week and then it's on to the back panel, the shelves, and the doors. We're shooting for a March 16th completion date but we'll see how things go.

I'm using 1.5" thick rigid insulation. I hadn't consider condensation in the insulation to be an issue since it's isolated by the Spanish cedar. Are you thinking condensation will form in the insulation gap due to the temperature difference between the inside and outside? Should I maybe add poly to the warm side between the insulation and the walnut?

That was my thought. I hate to be the a-hole who points out the problem without having a solution, but unfortunately that's the situation.

Also, have you considered using expanding foam for insulation? I would think it would fill up odd size spaces and gaps better than rigid insulation. It will make things more air tight and therefore your refrigeration unit will be more efficient. You'll probably have to let it sit for a while in order to out gas, but nothing done right is quick. :tu

I considered using the expanding foam but since I'm running by wires in that space as well I would't be able to get at the wiring if I needed to in the future.

I would think that if you were to wrap the rigid insulation with a heavy plastic and seal all the seams of the plastic with some sort of heavy tape, like the tape that they use on Tyvek house wrap, you should be alright. Kind of like gift wrapping it.

You might also be able to get rigid insulation that is impervious to absorbing moisture which would solve the problem.

Kick ass project by the way.

Don't over analyze the moisture issue and make it worse.
To better understand the issue, here is an excerpt from the Dept. of energy consumer’s guide on foam board;

"In cold weather, warm inside air containing water vapor can get past the wall finish and insulation, condensing inside the colder wall cavity. In hot, humid climates the same thing can happen, just in the reverse direction. Humid outdoor air in the summer can condense inside cool, air conditioned wall cavities. If enough of this happens and the water cannot escape, wood rot, mold, and other moisture-related problems can occur. For this reason, building codes often require installing a vapor diffusion retarder on the warmest side of the wall cavity."

The keys to your project, if installing a vapor barrier is to determine;

What is the warmest side of the box?
Will there be airspace between the 2 units?
Will there be adequate places for the moisture to escape on its own?

You can make it worse if you trap it in a void and it cannot escape.
Also check with the supplier where you buy the foam,
some already contain a plastic coating that will act as a barrier.
I would just place that side against the cedar side of the cabinet and let the rest of the cabinet breath to keep from rotting.

Keep in mind the concern with moisture in this application is not the amount of moisture in the cabinet vs. outside (cedar will do most of the work containing it if installed properly) it's the temperature difference inside vs. outside where condensation will be created.

In most case unless its in an extreme location it's not going to be a problem.

I cant swear to it, I cant swear the cabinet I saw was his but the guy said it was, but one I saw did not use a vapor barrier.
A guy local dropped his moving and knew I was into woodworking and asked me to look at fixing it.

Some wood glue and clamps was all he needed and I saw no vapor barrier at all.

Thanks for the great info Chas. Since temperature is really only an issue for me 3 months of the year and the maximum temperature difference will only be about 10 degrees I'm thinking vapor barrier might be overkill.

There is a small hole in the bottom of the cabinet for the power cord. I was going fill it with foam insulation but I might leave it open for moisture to escape.

Thanks for all the positive comments. I finally have a few more photos to add. Here's one of the back panel.
http://www.cigarasylum.com/vb/picture.php?albumid=108&pictureid=1516
The cooling units and electronics have been recessed into the cabinet. They take up some space inside but it makes the back nice and clean and allows the cabinet to be placed a few inches away from a wall.

A close up of the electronics. I still need to hook everything up.

Finally, an update on the cabinet project. It has taken longer and cost more than originally planned but I’m really happy with the quality of work. I moved about a month ago so I’ve been extra busy and haven’t been on CA much lately. Anyway, I’m finally getting settled in the new place and wanted to post some new pictures.

Here are the shelves. Notice the concealed hardware on the slides, I thought that was a nice touch.

It does look very nice. Once it's done, can you put up some numbers on what your final cost was for materials and aproximate time?

The materials so far are around $5500-6000 Canadian including shipping, duties, etc. My best guess in US dollars for someone in the States would be around $4500. The labor is what really gets expensive for a custom project like this. Total hours so far including design are around 350-400. I can give you some better numbers once it’s complete.

That's quite an investment. Even if you figure it at an hourly rate of $50, which is low for custom cabinet work like this, you are looking at almost $20,000 in total cost. This is a beautiful piece, I hope you are planning to pass it down to your kids/grandkids/great grandkids. Definitely an heirloom.

It's been 9 months since we stared design, and it has been stressful and frustrating at times, but I couldn't be happier with the results. It's definitely a one of a kind piece that will be in the family for generations.

Thanks everyone, I appreciate the comments. As Jordan (JE3146) mentioned it was my wife's brother that built the cabinet. I'll be sure to pass along the kind words. I had to google Norm Abram to find he is the guy from the New Yankee Workshop. My brother-in-law actually said there wasn't anything terribly difficult about the project, just that it was such a large project. I don't believe him. Anyway, I'm just glad it's finished so I can finally enjoy it.
