Maybe we can use this thread to keep track of the goings on in the Beer world. Seems like everyday there is some tidbit of news that affects someone/somewhere who enjoys a cold one.

Great Divide Brewing Pulls Out of 4 States and 2 Regions:

We are pulling out of MI, RI, DE and CT due to our exponentially increasing orders. Additionally, we are pulling out of DC and southern and central VA. While we are excited to see this massive growth, we simply do not have the production capability to keep up with these orders. We appreciate the loyalty that our customers have shared with us in these states and hope to be back in the future.

I like the idea and that sucks that GD is pulling products from those states. I hope they don't pull more states from New England because I absolutely LOVE Yeti! :dr

I wonder if we are going to see more and more of this.

Some breweries seem to be handling it proactive though, like Cigar City. They have been approved for GA but are not going to ship until they can figure out demand issues in their current markets.

Yep, and some like GI turn to AB for help, for better or worse.

It is definitly unusual to see a company pull out of an area because of to high a demand for product.

My logic could be wrong, but the way I see it is this:
Would you rather ship low quantities to 10 states and have it move quickly thus creating inadequate supply for the quantity demanded or supply only 5 states with an adequate supply in order to satisfy demand. :2

Either way it's disappointing for those states that are longer receiving GD products.

**I was using arbitrary numbers just to make a case**

I agree with you there. Its just pretty uncommon in todays day and age. Either companies are pulling out due to lack of business or they forgo quality to try and capitalize on that demand.

It may unusual business wise, but with the craft beer market becoming more highly competitive it would be detrimental to their business to start producing a lower quality product. Customers are becoming more aware of what quality is and with user review sites ratings being posted as advertisement on shelves it is very important that the beers continue to deliver.

Not so much new about beer, but a cool offer from a brewery...

Southern Tier is giving away a free blue spruce with every 422 six pack purchase on earth day. 422 is a great lawnmower beer, and I like trees. Too bad I don't live closer to the brewery or I'd be knocking down an old fence and planting a row of blue spruces.

Oh WTF! :su Is there a list of the states?

They are pulling distribution to four states and exports to the UK and Canada. The states are Tennessee, Rhode Island, Indiana, and Wisconsin. They also said they'd be limiting distribution of some of their beers, which I guess means the limited stuff will be more limited (geographically).

Well I'm out of the loop. Ouch 14% limited, no WWS for you guys :td No 120 minute either....brutal.

I never had Great Divide, I don't think it was ever here so no loss there for me. DFH is probably my favorite brewery so that sucks. The liquor store said they were saving their last DFH brews for the regulars (obviously this includes me). Everyone else gets the "we don't have anymore". I'm still sure they will be out in the next few months, hopefully if I have some extra $$$ I can snag a case.

Either way though very $hitty. Worst news I've heard in quite a bit.

Alabama to get Limited Release Cigar City beer

TAMPA BREWERY PAYS TRIBUTE TO MONTGOMERY AREA BAND

On July 29, Tampa’s Cigar City Brewing will release Black Whole, A Multi-Dimensional Ale in honor of Montgomery-area band El Chupa Cobras. Only 144 cases of the beer will be sold in the U.S., and it will only be available in Tampa, in the Birmingham area and at El Rey Burrito Lounge, a longtime supporter of fine craft beers in Montgomery.

About the beer

Black Whole is a multi-dimensional ale that takes many twists and turns similar to our daily lives. It has a big chocolate expression with moderate caramel notes, complex toasted to biscuit notes and hints of clove and black licorice. Don your chocolate mask and discover the meaning of life as you sip this complex, dark beer.

Black Whole is a tribute to El Chupa Cobras, a mathy indie band from Montgomery, Alabama. This effort came about from our realization that craft beer and indie music have a lot in common. Wayne Wambles, our head brewer, and Kenny Johnson, the front man for El Chupa Cobras, played in indie bands together many years ago and this tribute is for all indie music fans and craft beer lovers.

I thought this was a cool story. Chris Ray, relief pitcher for the Mariners, is also a homebrewer. He plans to open a craft brewery in Ashland, VA, named "Center of the Universe" (which is the town slogan, of sorts.) I was talking with a bartender at a local pub yesterday, and he pointed me to this story.

Chris Ray Brews One Up for Operation Homefront

COTU brewing company, the future brewery of Mariners pitcher Chris Ray, has partnered with Fremont Brewery, a Seattle local brewery for a special occasion: a beer that will be sold for charity at Safeco Field.

The beer? Homefront IPA.

The proceeds will go to Operation Homefront, a non-profit organization that helps families of soldiers overseas.

But this beer can't be sold without a baseball twist! Louisville slugger has graciously donated maple bats on which the beer will be aged. After the fermentation process is over, the bats will be pulled out, dried and signed by the Mariners players to be auctioned off.

Chris has been a homebrewer for a few years now, trading recipes and talking shop with his brother Phil in Florida. Homebrewing started out as a project, says Chris.

"I'm a project kind of person. I work with my hands to build something, and don't stop until it's done. Brewing beer allows me to repeat the process countless times by changing just one simple ingredient or all of them. It's a way to be creative where no one will judge you because if they do, no beer for them!"

Chris is like a mad scientist in his basement, brewing up flavors like Sweet Potato Ale, Rootbeer IPA and Banana Hefferveisan. He shares his passion (and beers) with his brother Phil, who brews a variety of different IPAs, IBAs and Porters.

Center of the Universe Brewing, his Virginia brewery, is a little ways from coming to fruition so Chris decided to partner with a local brewery in Seattle. Chris chose Fremont Brewing Company after a short question and answer session with one of the scorekeepers at Safeco Field (he happens to be the commissioner of the Brewers Association in Washington).

"We set up a meeting and between trying their delicious beers and philosophy on brewing, I felt it matched up with COTU (short for Center of the Universe Brewing)", Chris explained.

So now that he had the brewery to brew his beer, and a place to sell it (Safeco Field), he needed a charity to donate the proceeds to. After much talk, Chris and Matt Lincecum (owner of Fremont Brewing Company) decided on a military charity, which brought them to a short list of charities.

"For the final cut, I asked a good friend of mine who is stationed in Afghanistan which one he thought was best. Operation Homefront won. I called the local branch and they were on board immediately. I consider our soldiers our family. They protect us, we should support them. If I can brew a giant batch of beer and as a result money is given to the charity, I can't think of anything cooler than that".

The release of Homefront IPA will be on July 29th at Safeco Field.

Sierra Nevada says no to Tennessee plant

ALCOA, Tenn. — Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. has decided against locating a brewery in Alcoa, even after state lawmakers changed a law to entice the venture to east Tennessee, a Blount County economic development executive says.

A spokesman for the Blount Partnership said today that the Chico-based company notified them that the site in Alcoa is no longer being considered, the Associated Press reported.

Blount Partnership spokesman Jeff Muir said the family-owned brewing company told the partnership that differences from California's climate were a factor in the decision.

As an enticement for the $200 million plant and some 100 jobs, Tennessee lawmakers had passed a measure allowing on-site sales of high-alcohol beer and sampling products at a taproom and restaurant.

Sierra Nevada said last spring that it would like to expand somewhere east of the Mississippi River, and hoped to have a decision by the end of summer. A Blount County official earlier told the newspaper Blount Today that Alcoa and Roanoke, Va., where the two finalists for the plant. Sierra Nevada officials have not commented on particular sites.

It's still 4 hours away but a lot closer than 3 time zones! :noon

And Virginia has earthquakes, so they'll feel right at home.

If, in fact, Roanoke gets the plant :gl :gl

Never had this beer, so this post made me pick up a 6 pack tonight at the store. Was a bit expensive, but I know from browsing it's the only place in town that has it.

It was clearly dated 2012 on the bottle. So I imagine this is a beer that could possibly get aged? What's a good length of age for these? I tried one fresh and wasn't very impressed.

These get better with age. A year is good, but longer is even better!

Sadly I started aging in 2008:(

$10 a 6pk is a great deal for an awsome barleywine. $10 a 4pk is still worth it.
But it makes me want to buy a 2nd case of 2012 to put away so I can even have more to age. I never drink it until it has been a year old, and once I start I cant keep my hands off of it, to last any longer!

Fortunately a six pack is $7.96 here!

A four pack will probably remain the same price as the six pack.

If prices keep going up, I may have to redouble my efforts on tunneling to the brewery (I live less than four miles away)!;)

Thanks for the update. I remember reading that story from one of their six-pack carriers earlier this year, something about one of the new copper kettles being damaged in shipping and that they were waiting on the replacement. Didn't realize it was delayed that much and that they had started knocking down the old brewhouse rig. Ouch.
