So tonight I tried lighting my cigar with a few strips of cedar. I have heard many people say this was a great way to light up. I have tried this before with no luck. I found it very hard to keep the cedar lit. Tonight it was great! I learned to burn the cedar on a pretty extreme angle. While doing this I was easily able to toast and light my cigar.

All in all, it was very relaxing to light me cigar this way. Anyhow, I was just curious...how many people light their cigars with cedar??? ;)

I use my cheapo lighters to light my cigar, and that is, when my cheapo lighters work. Otherwise I don't make that big of a deal about how I light up (match, Bic, Xikar, cedar, etc).

If you are cool with lighting up your smoke with cedar, then more power to ya brother. Don't let clowns like me sway you.

I used to think of it as a "romantic" way to light a cigar when I first started smoking. However since I mostly smoke outdoors I tend to use a torch 99% of the time. I have ruined a couple wrappers, lighting with cedar, when the flame got to large.

I tried it once and I was unable to master the "trick" to doing it right.

I tried it once and I was unable to master the "trick" to doing it right.not sure it was a trick, but i just used strips that were about 1/4 inch wide, and about 5 inches long. once i lit the cedar, i tilted the strip downward at an angle so that the flame burned from bottom to top. this way it had more cedar to burn and I was able to maintain a consistent flame. took me 2 cedar strips to light. just my :2

I certainly enjoy this lighting method but be careful (http://www.cigarasylum.com/vb/showthread.php?t=40946)!

What cedar strips do you use? Like from the inside of tubos? Or the inserts in some CC cabs have those thicker cedar sheets. I always wondered.

kickerb

not sure where they came from, i assume they are just inserts in certain cigar boxes. every time i go to my local cigar shop that give me a few pieces. they are real thin. here is a pic....

They had cedar strips at the B&M I smoked at tonight. I went ahead with the torch as usual.

i realize lighting with cedar isnt a new concept, just new to me. if you havent tired it, I would certainly give it a shot. it will certainly make you appreciate the simplicity of a nice torch lighter!

I've done it a few times when the cigar happens to be wrapped in cedar. I do prefer the torch to get a nice, even light though.

I once tried to light a cigar stlll wrapped in cedar.

Yes, it was outside and dark.

Yes, I was drunk.

Really, really drunk.

I can never taste a difference using cedar vs. using a torch. It may be because I only use Vector fuel or maybe because I have the palette of a Philistine, but there you have it.

yeah i dont think that i noticed any extra taste from lighting with cedar, but im sure some do.

Interesting approach.....I use the torch 99% of the time as well, or if I'm in a cigar lounge or indoors, I will use cigar matches.

I will usually light that way when they are wrapped in cedar, and i certainly like the notion that it is a "Romantic" lighting method.

Really, really drunk.

A buddy of mine tried that just the other day.

No, it wasn't dark.

No, he wasn't drunk.....Yet!

Yes, it was funny as hell. :r:r:r

Just make sure if you are lighting a cigar with cedar roll from tubo or cedros not to hold it at an angle where the high point is where you hand is. The flame has to be the high point if you are holding a cylinder. The cylinder will heat up real fast and you could end up dropping a flaming cedar strip and/or burn your hand.

I love using the cedar when I remember. It's a little razzle-dazzle at herfs for those unfamiliar.

also for me I toasted the foot till it was lit, I did not draw from the cigar until i had a perfect ember. hell i left the cigar cap on until it was lit. haha yes, I had too much time on my hands :cb

I believe the Davidoff matches are made from cedar. If you could find some (or equivalent) that might be a better idea. My BIL lights up his cigars with cedar almost exclusively. He has gotten quite good at it.

I use cedar now and then, I enjoy the smell of it burning but really doesn't boost the enjoyment of the cigar...besides I get dogged by MAC, VOLT, and Barry for using it and I like the attn....NOT

Not all of them do. But the older ones were made of cedar. There might be some other company out there now too.

Your right about the Davidoff matches. But they do smell great when they burn!

Just like a lot of the stuff we do revolving around cigars, it's ritualistic, enjoy it when you can!

Make a little campfire with the cedar in your ash tray and then light it with your torch after you light your cigar.

Cedar is a different animal.... Spanish cedar is part of the mahogany family.... be cautious with this....

Are the grilling sheets the same type of cedar? Aren't the strips and sheets that would be included with the cigars Spanish cedar, which is vastly different from the aromatic cedar that you would grill with???

The force is hot with this one......

I have used cedar twice. It stresses me out too much. You have to be too careful to not burn the wrapper when
random pockets of volatile oils and resins ignite, burn yourself, or burn something else when the fire does something
weird. Torches are dangerous in their own right, but they tend to do pretty predictable things. Matches are somewhere
in between. I sometimes send cedar strips to the troops, since who knows what it's like over there in terms of lighting
apparati.

I have tried this twice...and both times I either burned myself or torched the wrapper. Will not be using this method again.

But I enjoy giving Tbone crap each time he attempts to do it and usually almost burns down Baileys or lights his hair on fire. :r :r

I've done it once years ago and got the most god-awful cedar overload for the first couple of puffs and couldn't taste anything but overwhelming cedar. After that, not again.

thanks!
