Just sold my recent new one on eBay to make room for a new 2.
It was gifted and only 16G with no 3G.
I have already taken up almost 14G of space and don't have half of what I would like on it.
So took a slight $100 loss and recovered 80% of the retail price, pre tax.
I'll take it.
Plenty of them on eBay. Just shop from a reputable source.
Once you have one, you are addicted.

You do know that AT&T is going to allow for wifi hotspot with your iPhone in the new iOS4.3 update? Then there is no need for 3G iPad. Wifey is getting my iPad 1.0 when 2.0 hits the streets.

Are you saying they will allow tethering?
Crap, that makes me happy that I downgraded my unlimited bandwidth when I bought the latest iPhone... I didn't think they would ever bow to the pressures of allowing tethering :(

Tony,
Just got this from the web.
Any Current iPhone customer will qualify for the $20/month Tethering option by switching to a new $25/month 2GB plan from the current $30/month unlimited data plan. So if you don’t want tethering, you can keep $30/month for unlimited data but in order to get tethering your data plan rate will increase to $45/month ($25 + $20) with a 2GB data cap.
Not sure they are doing me any favors as I currently am grandfathered into the unlimited and this seems like a lure to get you out of it.
I think I rather have the 3G seperately for the iPad but need to better digest it and see what happens in the near future as it is released.

Plus tethering through AT&T will be costly if you do it without it being unlocked and using wifi.

LOL, no the jailbreak process nowadays is extremely easy. Go to www.greenpois0n.com and download the jailbreak. Follow the instructions and you're done! Well, mostly anyway. Run the loader and it will install Cydia. Cydia is where you can find all the fun third party stuff that really makes the iPhone shine. You'll spend days exploring all the cool apps in there.

Sprint is trying to charge for Tethering. I don't think google liked that, so they released their own tethering app. Root your android phone and you can tether for free.
That being said... waiting just a little longer for any of the 30+ android tablets being released in the next few months.
I like apple, their products, etc. I just don't like paying the tax that goes with it. :sl

FYI from MacRumors:
The source of today's report also indicates that the iPad being introduced tomorrow should be considered more of a spec bump of the existing model than a true revamp. A more ambitious revamp is reportedly scheduled for later this year.
The Apple staffer declined to give details about the iPad 2 or 3, but said:
"For the iPad 2 don't get your hopes up too high. That's all I'm going to say. They've had a number of problems along the way, and the third-generation iPad is the one to make a song and a dance about."

Tony,
Just about everything I have read says the 3 for later this year will be 7" version or so, to fall in between an iPod/iPhone and the current iPad.
Would make sense given the flooding of the market with smaller size tablets.
I am wound up for the 2 regardless of what it is, even if it looks like my avatar.:r
If the 3 turns out to be better, I will just have sold my second iPad on eBay come that time.:D

People do when they do not have a credit card but have P*yPal account so they cannot order directly from a retailer. Also, there are some people who are outside the US who are not allowed to buy high-tech products from a retailer, but can always find someone on eb*y to sell to them... Often times these guys will have mail drops in the US that forward all mail/packages to them (Asia, Middle East, etc.).
And thene there are just the run-of-the-mill morons...

The majority of the ones I watched were in the US.
There were a few that were international.
I suppose the credit part would make sense in that you can use PP to deduct from your checking but I thought you needed a credit card on file for PP?

I ran into this when I listed my old iPhone on eb*y -- I stated US only in the listing. One guy responded, claimed he was in the US, but he was really in Sudan and had a mail drop. I can't remember how I found out about it... I think he had some P*yPal issues with his Sudanese bank...

Michael, I guess with the iPad, that concern would only arise if using Face Time and then trying to multi task.I thought Face Time was a WiFi-only app?

Yeah, that's a good point. We've found 32 to be plenty on our phones, but I'm pretty sure my wife will use it for videos quite a bit. Oh, and while I will have access to it, it won't be mine by any means. It's hers, or at least 99% hers. She said I could take it on trips, but I probably won't.

Looks like demand is expected to be quite high for this new one.
However, they are saying there should be plenty to go around as this time, they will be offered by AT&T, Verizon, Best Buy, Target and Walmart.
Looks like all may have them available upon the store opening on Friday, well before the Apple store starts selling them at 5.
I am rethinking the online ordering and considering hitting Best Buy when they open on Friday.
If I can't get one, will order online after that and then take my chance at the Apple store.
Maybe I am being foolish but I am hoping the one I want is the one most folks don't.

Best Buy on Friday when it opens at 10 a.m.
AT&T on Friday when it opens at 9 a.m.
Apple on Friday at 5 p.m.
Three of the four are across the street from each other and a couple of miles away for me.
Apple is 3-4 miles away.
Lots of options for Friday.

Stores open 24 hours a day will have them on sale long before anyone else does.
If they address the truck load promptly, you may even be able to get one at midnight and be the first on your block.

Every time I thought I made up my mind, I wonder again.
I still think best for me to get the 3G and have it if I want it rather than not if I do.
At the end of the day, $129 for me for the 3G or for the wife to go shopping on clothing.

We called the Apple Store before they closed last night and was told they were totally sold out on the AT&T 3G but had plenty of Verizon.

Appears all the negativity about AT&T v. Verizon is confined to a few and not the masses.
Apparently the masses have read the results that AT&T blows Verizon away on 3G speeds.

Not sure this is correct. There may be a reason why AT&T has slashed an additional $100 and Apple has not. If you buy from AT&T I believe you will be required to activate.

In case anyone wonders whether they need a 16, 32 or 64.....
....I thought originally a 16 would be enough. My first generation iPad was therefore a 16.
My new one is a 64.
At this point, with minimal photos, only three videos and around 1,000 songs, with around 20 music videos, add to that my apps, I am at 14 GB.
If one takes into the account the 2 GB taken up by the system, that means I would be maxed out on a 16.
Glad I got the 64 the second time around.

I still have 3.9GB left on my 16GB and I got it on original release day straight from China. If I got rid of all the Trailer Park Boys episodes that I put on there by mistake, I'd have lots more space.
I use my phone for music, so there's no music on there at all, I don't think. It'd be cool if I used it for pics, but I don't, so all I have is some wallpapers and various crap.

I am going to try and get an OG iPad. Should I just get the WiFi model or do you recommend paying for the 3G service?
I'm not sure what an OG is, but I don't have a 3G model.
There were a couple reasons, I didn't have 3G where I lived, I already had an iphone and didn't need data on both my ipad and phone, and there's wireless everywhere I go. Plus I didn't want to pay the bill for data.
From all the stuff I've read, you really have to think of "how am I gonna use this thing?"
I use it to read books and magazines, and for dragging it when I travel. I use it for internet on the couch, because I hate a laptop. It's not a laptop replacement, so get that out of your head if you were thinking that. It's close though, depending on your habits. I'm an email, internet surfing goof, so it fits my needs perfectly.
I guess what I'm saying is "think about how you think you're going to use it."

Erick,
I have had both.
My original was wifi only.
My new one is 3G.
If $129 is no option, get it. Better to have it than not. In my case, I travel and when I do, I can rely on 3G where no wifi.
If you don't have plans of using it remotely, save the money.

OG = Original = iPad 1.
Is there an app for wireless printing?
Got ya.
The ipad has bluetooth, and it should be able to print. I've never done it, and never had need to, so I don't know. You'd have to Google that one.
For some reason I think that capability came with an OS upgrade somewhere along the way.

Yeah, AirPrint.
The new 4.3.1 update on my iPad cranks up the speed of Safari even more.

It's not a laptop replacement, so get that out of your head if you were thinking that. It's close though, depending on your habits. I'm an email, internet surfing goof, so it fits my needs perfectly.
I agree it's not a laptop replacement, but I do find myself using my laptop a whole lot less.
I even installed VNC on the iPad so I can do stuff on my laptop without having to use my laptop.

I don't use my laptop at all, I just gave it to Cole (my stepson). He needed one for school, or at least he does next year.
So for me, it's definately a laptop replacement. I do my desktop stuff at my desk. Lisa could never replace her laptop with one, because she's on hers all day for work.
I think now that the ipad has a camera, she could probably do all her work from one, but wouldn't want to. She does a tremendous amount of speed-of-light typing and needs a number keypad. Plus she uses a couple monitors.
Speaking of that, there's an app for making a second monitor out of your ipad wirelessly. I just saw it the other day, but I totally forget everything I read about it. ;s

I would say in my case, 90% of my computer usage is now on my iPad.
I use my laptop mostly to print since I don't have a wireless printer but will soon take care of that too.
Obviously, I need the laptop also to sync my iPad.

I set it up to print through my wife's MacBook Pro. It was easier than through my laptop (PC). With my laptop, I had to setup a username and password and then type that each time I wanted to print. From the MacBook, you just have to print. No need to buy another printer as long as your printer is already network connected.

I installed this on my wifes macbook. Printopia (http://www.ecamm.com/mac/printopia/)
Cost $10. There's ways to do it for free I think, but it was easy to do this way.
A windows option. I did it the hard way (had to copy certain files to certain locations,) but this looks much easier. AirPrint through windows (http://ipadhelp.com/ipad-help/how-to-enable-airprint-for-windows-and-use-any-printer/)
If your buying a new priner anyways, then I can see getting one AirPrint enabled. For me, I have a nice HP Color Laser printer that I paid a pretty penny for a few years ago. Still works great, so I don't really want to buy a new one. Plus I've never really liked inkjet printers. I always have problems with the jets if I don't use them often enough.

Has anyone tried to print wirelessly using an apple time capsule using iOS? Or does the printer itself need to be wireless?
shilala
03-28-2011, 10:42 AM
I'm absolutely certain there has to be a network printer app that allows you to send stuff to your computer, then to your printer across the internet, just like all the remote control programs do. It's the same thing, basically.
Ya know, like to the web, then your desktop, then to your printer?

I'm not too familiar with a Time Capsule. It is basically a router?
I have my printer connected to my dsl modem/router via an ethernet cable. I print with no problems. I have a wifi printer I can print to as well. In my case the computer is sending the data to the printer.
I think as long as you can print from that computer to that printer, you can print to it from the iPad via AirPrint.
There is a trial on the software. Best to try to see if it works before you buy it.

What I am trying to do is charge the iPad from my computer, and not use an electrical outlet. It will only charge via USB connection to the computer if 1) it is a newer USB 2 port (not older USB 1) and 2) the iPad is turned off. Even so it will charge much slower.
The USB port charges at a much lower rate than the 10 watt iPad charger.
