Cubaos are awesome. Another great one I've tried lately is, Tobbaco Baez. Nice full bodied cigar with a great punch to it.

Did somebody call?????:D
The Blue is still my favorite although I have been smoking the hell out of some Blacks and LAC Edition Especials lately. Recently picked up a 5er of original release Guapos that I have been dreaming about but free time has been non existent since I have been spending a lot of time doing some work around the house for Thanksgiving. Have heard the Cubao is fantastic, but have yet to order any and have not been able to find them local yet. Had the opportunity to try the Vegas Cubanas and both times I had to put the stick down prematurely as I thought they were that bad. I guess the guy is allowed to have one crappy stick right?:r

Bretheren, I saw the title to this thread and came running! :ss IMO, the Series JJ Maduro is #1, followed closely by a San Cristobal and Cuban Classic (Black Label) figurado. He also blended the 5 Vegas Miami line, which is definitely my favorite in that series and an everyday go-to smoke for me. Has anyone tried the My Father label recently released? I'm dying to get my hands on one of these, but have no local B&M and haven't found a 5'er on C-bid yet. (yes, i'm cheap, so sue me)

There was a group Pepin "whores" on CS... which I have been checking less and less...:hm

I was a new, yet avid fan/poster of the group, (just could do without the 'whores' moniker...:2

It was great and should be restarted here...:ss

I personally believe some of the Tat brown labels are smoking better than ever!! (certainly better than about 1 & half - 2 years ago). I have been getting into the Cabaiguan Guapos and really find the Cubao's an interesting smoke... want to try more!
The Tat black robusto had MAJOR construct issues, but AMAZING flavor. LOVE the new La Aroma EE!!

The Tabacos Baez was very unimpressive.

I am a fan of pretty much all that Pepin makes. Perhaps it is the similar flavor profile across the lines. They all don't taste alike but I think I like the varying amounts of pepper blended in with different flavors (say a Tat Cojonu 2k3 vs a San Cristobal Guajiro). There are some lines that aren't as good as others; yet my favs always seem to hit for me:

Tat Cabinet (aka brown label)
Tat Havana (aka red)
Tat P series
San Cristobal
601 Red, Blue, Black lines
Mi Barrio
DPG Blue, White, & Black
Vegas Cubanas

I need to hit a smoke after typing this! :D

Thanks I find the Old Henrys creamy with some leather, cocoa and spice. Not as spicy as many Pepins ( and I love the spice ) but something about these I really like. Find them very smooth but full of flavor begining to end. I guess they would be somewhat like a San Cristobal.:2

Good to see this thread!

Here is an area this Pepin Ho is unclear and I would like some insight from you all.

Cabaiguan is still my favorite Pepin creation. I crave the Coronas Extra and Belicoso Fino yet have a hard time finding them. My most frequented cigar store the past year has been the Party Source in Bellvue, Kentucky. Micah in there is quite helpful, but when I asked him about getting in the "original" Cabaiguns he said the cigars he has in stock "Guapos" are the originals.

All of the Cabaiguans at The Party Source have this band:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/1/12/Cabaiguan_Guapo.jpg/800px-Cabaiguan_Guapo.jpg
This band I first saw on the Nicaraguan-made Guapos and Guapos RX (maduro)

The original Cabaiguans had this band and were rolled in Miami
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/54/Cabaiguan.jpg

On the Tatuaje web site it now states "made in Nicaragua".

So my questions for all of you:
1) Have you seen any Cabaiguans with the old label?
2) Where does the box they are in say they were rolled (if not in bins)

Hmmm, interesting. I'm willing to bet that the originals with the old labels are still available online. I saw a box with the original band about 2 and 1/2 months back in a local B&M, but I think they had been sitting for a while. I would PM Greg (NCRadioman) and he'll probably clue you in; he knows a lot about Pepin products.

Good question, Matt. I am not 100% sure but I think the original's are still rolled in Miami and the Guapos come out of Nica. The Guapos are definitely not the original.

My shop just got in a few boxes of original Coronas Extras and they are stamped Sept. 09 and were rolled in the ERdLH factory and do have that original band.

OHMatt

I went to Jungle Jim's yesterday and they had 3 boxes stamped APR 09 and Miami.. So along with the information you provided it seems

1.) Pete doesn't send TPS/Micah Cabaiguan originals or Micah only wants to carry the Guapos
2.) Some time this year production of the originals moved from Miami to Nicaragua.

Very intereting - thanks for the input!

Last night I had one of the new San Cristobal Seleccion Del Sol cigars.

What struck me at first when I saw them; the cigars were a bit less expensive than the originals. How often does selecting a "a very special sun-grown wrapper grown on the Garcia family's "Estrella" farm in Esteli, Nicaragua." and a second band reduce the cost of a cigar? I hesitated to grab one, but like any self-respecting Pepin Ho I must smoke them all.

The flavor had a bit less pepper and a bit less acidity than the originals but was remarkably similar. It burnt flawlessly, which sometimes isn't the case with special wrappers.

I smoked 3 cigars last night and the San Cristobal was the least expensive. I still can't decide if this or the MJ12 was my favorite however they both stomped the flying pig.

I didnt dislike the original my fathers, but will definetly agree that the le bijou is a very different animal and definetly a better stick to me.

Had a Tabaco Baez Serie SF robusto the other day, I guess these are fairly new. In Cali they are about 3.25 a stick. Probablly the best 3.00 non cuban I have had. Nubbed it which suprised the hell out of me. It definetly out preformed my expectations of a short filler stick.

For what you are asking about my picks would be

San Cristobal (the original I haven't had the del sol and don't know how they differ)
Mi Barrio (a little spicy at the beginning but pairs well with a beer to put it in that medium range)
601 Green (one of my all time faverites, more medium to full but if you have had a meal before you should be fine)

I am sure there are more those are just the ones that spring to mind right away. :ss

Well I had the San Cristobal last night and I must say I enjoyed it. Especially the middle third. Seemed very earthy to me. It actually went out on me as I made may way into the final third. This may be due to the fact that temperatures dropped like a rock last night. When I got home it was in the upper 20's. By the time I got done with dinner, etc. and got to the garage, it was 1 1/2 hour later, and by the time I finished it was 13 degrees out! Luckily no wind. Keeping it lit for the last third was a chore and I believe I over-puffed it and got it too hot and I started to get some hay tastes and biting on the back of tongue. I will certainly give it another try when things warm up.

The difference is that the lines above are advertised as made by them. There is a reason for CI catalogs no longer advertising Pepin's association with 5 Vegas Miami (this after a couple of months not even having the line in the catalog at all save for a couple of mixed samplers, the line has "re-appeared" now with no mention of Pepin's involvement).

"5 Vegas Miami is a gem of a cigar. Carefully crafted by the talented hands of Jose ’Don Pepin’ Garcia, maker of the industry’s most sought after cigars, this rare blend takes the 5 Vegas brand – already a fan favorite – to a whole new level of cigar superiority..."

I don't know who makes the cigars, but they're definitely still advertised using Pepin's name.

I don't have time to read through this entire thread but here some further Pepin brands/blends that should be added to the list:

Capanna d'Oro - House Blend for Barclay Rex
Mi Barrio - a 601 brand but is different from the Cubao/601/Murcielago
My Father
My Father Le Bijou 1922
Famous 70 Garcia Family
Maroma Fuerte - "sandwich style" blend for Famous
Siboney Reserve - House Blend for Famous
Signature Garcia - House Blend for Famous
Los Imperialistas - Regional brand for the SE USA (not sure if this is still being made)

From Cigarmonster.com, regarding Tabacos Baez

Famous bought this entire brand of delicious treats from Pepin many months ago and has made the brand their own.

Did I miss something? Does anyone know when this happened? I still see TB's at other shops.

I love it when this thread pops back up.

Just had a San Cristobal Lancero last week on the lake. It had a lite dusting of Plume on it. It was one of the BEST smokes I have ever had. And I have had my share of San Cristos too. I cant wait to try the S.C. Del Sol

Just had my first My Father Le Bijou 1922 this afternoon. Needless to say I was impressed. Probably my favorite Pepin so far...... Kinda excited about those new limited edicions......... Too bad the sticker shock is keeping me from pulling the trigger.

Jaimes stuff is really good also. If you like the Le Bijou I would recommend trying out some of his new stuff. A lot of flavor at a very fair price.

What a great smoke! I have had only one also but man I would love to get a Box.
It would take a while to get up the nerve (and the funds) to pull the trigger on a box.

The original My Father and the fairly priced, Jaime Garcia Reserva Especial come to mind.

I recently had an Art Deco. Part of the Nestor Miranda Collection. It's a cigar with 40% Dominican, yes, Dominican filler. Pretty darn good! Be on the lookout. They come in tins of 21 with the art deco look.

Hirsh Y Garcia is my new favorite cigar.

I've said it for years, I think it's Pepin's best blend. My only problem is the price or I would buy more. They used to be priced more reasonably.

My name is Doug, and I am a Pepin-aholic.

Let me tell you, I love almost everything he makes. I took the plunge this week and snagged a box + a few singles of the new My Father Limited Edition. Chances are this will be the last production cigar Pepin will ever roll entirely by himself, I couldn't help but get in on this. Pelo de Oro + My Father + Pepin / Jaime Rolling = Epic cigar.

Steve,

My local shop is running 40% off Cubao because they have a hard time selling them. Would you like for me to see what they have left? They said they'd ship anywhere in the lower 48!

Do they carry DPG in your local B@M. I am in charleston and I gotta say they have a pretty weak selection of DPG's. They might have some of his Ashton or TAT products but maybee just 1 vitola.

I see the cubao is put in a 601 sampler, didn't it release before, seperately or was it made to be connected with the 601 series?
