I have been wondering for awhile now how many different flavor profiles can be found in cigars. And I dont mean the strawberry rockets from the local gas station either. Let's see if we can get a list going of familiar tastes that can be found in cigars.

1.) Woody
2.) Earthy
3.) Cedary
4.) Floral
5.)

Nice! Now, as a noob, I'd be interested in seeing cigars mapped to the wheel. For instance, I'm a fan of the sweet, caramel and creamy wedges. It would be cool to look at the wheel and be able to pick out a couple cigars that fall into those areas.

I'm sure something like this exists somewhere. Anybody know of a good tool that can be used to map flavor preferences to cigars?

I've always had trouble identifying flavors in a cigar. I printed this out to use the next time I try a new cigar. This is a great chart. :ss

I think they are opposite sides of the spectrum.

Great Thread!

I found this and some other interesting tidbits here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taste).

Factors affecting taste perception

Many factors affect taste perception, including:

Aging
Color/vision impairments
Hormonal influences
Genetic variations; see Phenylthiocarbamide
Oral temperature
Drugs and chemicals
Natural Substances (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miracle_fruit)
CNS Tumors (esp. Temporal lobe lesions) and other neurological causes
Plugged noses
Zinc deficiency

It is also important to consider that flavor is the overall, total sensation induced during mastication (e.g. taste, touch, pain and smell). Smell (olfactory stimulation) plays a major role in flavor perception.

Zinc eh? Gotta go take a multivitamin...

That tastes like Umami.
:)

I would think the mild-medium flavors are on the left side (yellow) and the med-full flavors are on the right side. (orange)

Balsa? Really? Was I supposed to be tasting all those airplanes when I was a kid?

I like this wheel, though. It's great to have a list of flavors to call on when trying to do a review. I'll taste something, and if I don't get a clue, they all taste like "tobacco."

It helps you narrow down the flavors. Pick the one in the center that best fits the flavor, then go outward and pick the more detailed option if possible.

EX: If you determine its floral, then go outward and decide if you think the flavor is rose, jasmin, balsa or mint.

The ones used in wine testing/tasting are great to use as well. Here is one I like to use:

This one above is big enough to print out.

I have seen many different flavor wheels and even a few specifically for cigars. Maybe we should do a Cigar Asylum wheel??

When we do trained taste panels we usually have a standard we use to identify with each flavor....what would you propose we use as a standard here? Age? Sex? Culture? Or should we leave this up to the individual smoker:D

I'm not the one who could answer this question, since I myself have never used this as a description. But that is a good question. I often wonder how one would know what ass tasted like. But then again, maybe I don't want to know.:D

But on a serious note, I'd be interested to hear more about using standards to identifying flavors. I found that wheel very interesting and useful.
