From the article:
While Verizon's network is popularly perceived to be better than AT&T's, it has yet to be tested by the heavy volume of data use that accompanies the iPhone.
Gonna be interesting when the rush of new iphones start flexing Verizons network.
A T & T pays the bills in my house, so I'm kinda partial.;)

It makes me sad to think of how bad Verizon will screw up iphone.
The iphone OS doesn't lend itself to nickel and diming a person for everything, and that's their business model.
My other comment is "I'll believe it when I see it."

Still not an official announcement. WSJ has reported about 10 times that the iPhone is coming to Verizon. Eventually they will be right.
Like I said before, I'll believe it when Verizon AND Apple have both officially announced it and even then I'll really only believe it when they go on sale (see white iPhone 4g).
All I know is my Verizon contract is up Jan 17th and the iPhone will get a hard look, if I have the option(I have been thinking about getting a smartphone).
I will not leave Verizon, regardless of the phone.

My years of experience with AT&T left me with a firm commitment to NEVER return, save for if they were my only choice. Fortunately they are not and I don't expect that they ever will be.
I know there are people very happy with AT&T, I am pleased they are getting what they need. But for me, it was not a happy marriage and I got out.

Wish I could say there was a difference other than mine usually has better service than hers, specially when we are in the Keys.

Good news in these parts as Verizon's signal is much better in my area. I have friends and/or family on AT&T and Sprint, and each have a lot more problems getting a signal/dropped calls, etc.
Now, to decide if I want to upgrade...:hm

Well put. I was on Verizon and switched to an iPhone on AT&T. The AT&T service in my area is HORRIBLE. My contract is up next month and I'm going back to Verizon whether it be to an iPhone or a Droid I don't really care. I think they're pretty comparable.

I have tried them all except T-Mobile and all cell service providers are nickel & dime crooks so I don't think it really matters that much which one you use.

I think VZN is going to be hard pressed to get people to port from ATT if their data package is going to cost people more. People love the service, but it comes at a price.

I have the iphone now and honestly do hope Verizon gets it, just makes for good pricing wars and better coverage. When guys jump ship from ATT (we all know they will) it will free up some of the coverage zones and hopefully make everything better.

I had At&t a while back, I would get voice messages three days after they were left and no one could tell me why. Around here, my Verizon has much better service than at&t did.
Now the question with your quote is, why do you need a phone in the Keys? Just sit back, relax and throw the phone away!! :D

I live a few miles outside of Boston. But that doesn't matter. I've had calls dropped right in the middle of the city. I live in a heavily populated area and there are HUGE dead areas all over the place here with AT&T.
I have no doubt that the quality of service from AT&T varies from place to place and the same can be said about all the cell providers. Around here Verizon has MUCH better coverage. I'm sure you've travelled extensively and I'm very happy for you that you haven't had coverage issues while doing so, but reports of poor service aren't just made up.

Will you please tell that to my wife? :lv I'm not relishing having to try to talk her into waiting a few more months.
The real deal breaker for me at least, is not so much the lack of 4g since VW will not have the entire country covered (at least to the extent that the 3g service does) until the end of 2012 or early 2013.
The issue is that the CDMA protocol doesn't allow for simultaneous data and voice. That WILL be rectified in late 2011. I would want a guarantee that this iphone phone will be compatible with that. And that ain't gonna happen.
They (apple) are not stupid, there is a reason their stock is hanging around $340 a share. They are masters at getting people to buy the same thing over and over again.
Whatever they unveil in July is going to be just different, sexy, cool enough to make the hunk of aluminum and circuit boards that you spent a week’s pay on and waited in line for 6 hours to buy seem like a piece of $hit.

Is it really the phone? When I had ATT (before the iphone) I always had dropped calls. I've yet to have that issue with VZ **knock on wood**.
I looked at the DRIOD bionic and it's a beast with a 4.3" display (iphone is 3.5"). I think the iphone is almost too big as is.....plus I never had good luck with motorola.

this what i dont get. i have been with; alltel, gci, att alaska(seperate from lower 48 version), cellone, att(mothership lower 48 version) for personal phones. verizon, sprint, and back to att for work phones. cellone was the best in cs and servive imo, then alltel, att alaska, att, verizon, sprint, gci. att has always been very responsive to problems i have had, something verizon never was whether it was the gov phone or not. service and coverage are above average but not much. of all the people i know the only ones who oobjectively have issues with att are iphone users and i have personally seen those issues too. i wont go to verizon because i need gsm for overseas but even then i wouldnt consider them.

My guess is the area you are in? Back about 5 years ago ATT sucked in my area and VZ was the best. Now reception is the same, but our neighbor needs ATT for international travel and he complaisn about dropped calls from his home. For domestic usage I will keep VZ, but if I needed a phone for use internationally I would look at ATT.
Also, I used to go to my grandparents beach house in the summer and Sprint was the only thing that worked there. Then up at my uncle's house in Maine VZ was the only one that worked. Today, the issue at the beach is no longer, but in Maine VZ is still the better choice. :2

I understand travelling with a VZW phone will be less of an issue in the future. The 4G technology they are using is going to be the international standard.
Interesting press conference about the new VZW iPhone. They confirmed the phone will be the same price as at AT&T, but not much in the way of details beyond that. It sounds like the vPhone won't be 100% the same as the AT&T version. Also, no info yet on the data plans either. I signed up on Apple.com to get further info as it becomes available.
My AT&T contract is up next month so this is good timing. I might go with a Droid phone though to get the 4G service.

Posted via Mobile Device
No, allegedly it will still be running on 3G which means no browsing while on a call. Additionally it would be a bad move for someone to buy now as traditionally apple releases a new model each June and I don't forsee this being any different if the verizon phone is going to be the same platform as the current iPhone 4

Nothing alleged about it, it's plain old 3g cdma.
I completely agree with everything else Andrew. WWDC is going to be June. If the past is any indication there will be a new iPhone unveiled. If I were in the market for a Verizon iPhone I would wait a few more months.

Eh, there is a new phone every six months that makes your current one out of date no matter what you do. And if I'm not mistaken generally CDMA versions release later so who knows if they will be same date release or not.

I agree whole heartedly, but this is MID-product cycle. I buy a brand new to the market phone I expect it to be overtaken by something new. With this you are already half-way there.
They are going to see a metric a$s-load - it's freaking brilliant.

I don't doubt for a second it will be a great device. And you very well may be correct and the CDMA iPhone 5 is going to be next winter... The only thing really sticking in my craw is that you CANT get these on a 1-year contract. It seems like it's 2 years or full retail. I also heard (pure speculation) that Verizon is going to be changing it's early upgrade eligibility from 1 year to 20 months. 20 months is a LONG time.

I believe they just changed their contracts around, and as far as I know you can do a 1 year or a 2 year, instead of the "new every two" they used to stick with. Not sure if maybe the iPhone won't offer the 1 year option

There was an interesting article in the paper here today about the new Verizon Iphone. Like Pete and several others mentioned it is 3G only so there is no surfing/talking concurrently. I don't see that as a huge deal for me anyway. However, they were saying the big catch is that Apple will probably release a new Iphone 5 this summer. Again that is widely expected and not huge news. What really caught my eye though was they said that Verizon will not be able to offer the Iphone 5 to its customers until the one year anniversary of their contract. It would really tick me off if a new model was released and I could only get the old one!!!

I think there are going to be a lot of ticked off people if Apple doesn't plan this correctly.
I suspect they will come out with a "new and improved" model for the Verizon release to avoid new customers feeling like they got "leftover phones with antennae issues." (not that that is the case, just perception for some)
I'm kinda excited for my upgrade as I am still in the dark ages with my Iphone 3.

at $200 i'm not interested
My guess is you've never purchased a smartphone before....unfortuntately most smart phones are in the $200 range with a 2 year contract.

I wouldn't be surprised if they release the 4g phone next month and the 5g in the summer....how else can Apple expect their stock price/revenue to continue to climb ;)

I would be surprised to see two new releases from Apple that close to each other

Finally, where there's smoke there's fire. :) Now, it'd be nice to have more clarity into when the iPhone 5 will be released on VZ. I've been due for an upgrade for almost 2 years and I'd don't mind waiting for the iPhone 5, but I don't think I could hold out for another year.

I understand not being able to use data while on the phone, but what happens if you are using data and receive a phone call? Will that go straight to voicemail? (It's been years since I've been on a CDMA network).

Bump, would love to knwo an answer to this. Im currently an AT&T user, but they dont have service at my house, and well i work from home now so I am going to swap to verizon when the iphone comes out. I didnt think about this but what does happen if your using data? I would have thought it would shut your data off and go to phone.. maybe im wrong.

It doesn't on my blackberry. Phone calls will interrupt whatever I am doing and most of the time if a page is downloading it will automatically resume as soon as the call is over

For those of you that either waited for Verizon to have the iPhone 4 or are considering it in the future, interesting read.
