These are being made along side the production sticks to be released at some point in the future. Only difference is the early release and a covered foot.

I do like the black labels but......For their size they are quite pricey @ $8.52 a piece for a 6x38 stick? No deals on the box prices either, even if you buy 35 sticks!

Brutus2600

The SODO was what...$11 a stick? Same size.

I'll pay $8.50 for a good lancero.

But yeah, Tatuaje's limited releases are never cheap :(

Good to know that a regular release is on it's way!

I don't have any idea on the future production scale, if any, of these cigars, but I can tell you why there are only 200 boxes right now...

...That's how many boxes Pepin's box shop made by accident.

When we were down in Nicaragua at the beginning of November on the Drew Estates Cigar Safari, Pete was down at the My Father factory and spending quite a bit of time hanging out with us, at one point he comes over with a big smile on his face and says something like "As of a few minutes ago, it now looks like I'm releasing a Tat Black petite lancero. <big grin> Pepin's box shop made a mistake and made 200 boxes*, and since I hate waste, and I already have the cigars, I'm going to release them."

*: the wrong size or by accident - I forget exactly which Pete said. He didn't want Pepin to have to absorb the cost of the boxes.

I find this very interesting given that a couple years ago when the Black CG's came out they were supposed to be a limited release that was not going to be regular production. Not due to the size, but due to the leaf/crop available. It seems that the black series has done so well he "found" more black material.

I don't recall Pete ever claiming that these or the previous Tat Blacks were from the same crop. Just that the blend is the same.

If Pepin has grown more leaf that is suitable for the cigars, and Pete wants to make them, then what's the big deal? It's just a recurring limited release that changes vitolas over the years when it comes out. Not the first time something like this has been done.

I didn't explain that correctly. I will have to find the discussion, but he claimed that Blacks were going to be his personal stash, then said that they were a one time thing, and now they are going to regular production? I didn't mean to say the same exact crop, but that the leaves used are supposed to be the same type.

I don't find it to be a problem, but that was part of the hype of the cigars, that they were going to be VERY exclusive.

Understood. I seem to vaguely recall reading some of those statements too.

I think some clarification from Pete as to the production numbers and what he meant by "regular" might be in order. He might have just meant that this a split release due to the box fubar that brought about it's release in the first place Or maybe it will be a low volume continuous production. I don't know, but I can see it possibly meaning either.

----

EDIT: I'm re-reading Pete's posts about the cigar production on another board, and it really does sound more like a split (early) release and then a limited release and he might have been referring to how factory workers are dedicated to a project. But I'll ask just to clarify.

Wet packed are when the cigars are wrapped in foil packaging immediately after being rolled. (do not think they go to the drying room at all..) Supposed to help with long term aging..

Since these will be fresh and meant to be smoked when released there is no need to wet pack them.

The cigars for later release will be wet packed since they will be sitting a while before release.

I shot Pete a message asking for a bit more detail on the production and I mentioned the previous "limited / exclusive nature" commentary to which Wayne and I were talking about earlier in the thread, and Pete's reply was (reprinted verbatim with permission):

The cigars will be in full production but quantities will not be huge. Maybe around 20,000 to 25,000 sticks per year max. Available to any current full line dealer. I decided to make this and maybe another, full production now that we have the tobacco to work with.

Thanks for the additional information - very interesting. I wonder if Pete might consider a true Corona (5 1/2" x 42) in the Black Label line? This size, with something like a flag cap, would be an incredible smoke, IMO. The medium ring-gauges have always been the best "show-case" for all of the Tat blends, and I've always wondered why this specific vitola has been ignored by them.

I put my name down for the waiting list and just received a e-mail yesterday saying they have freed-up some of the PL's that other people did not want anymore. I have 5 sticks coming my way, and also asked for some Liga Privada to be sent along. Jeff (guy I spoke with on the phone) said they have both 9's and T52 Flying Pigs in stock, so I asked for a few of each of those.

Ok guys, I just got my box this morning, and thought I would post some quick pics...sorry for the crappy quality, the studio is at home...

Surprisingly small vertical box, totally black lacquered on the outside (but NOT the inside)...
http://www.brookswhittington.net/cigars/BlackPLBox_1.JPG

The cool thing is that the word "BLACK" is lacquered INTO the paint on the back...not the easiest to see, but pretty cool...
http://www.brookswhittington.net/cigars/BlackPLBox_2.JPG

The Box opens on the top (pretty cool) and the cigars are standing straight up and down inside...
http://www.brookswhittington.net/cigars/BlackPLBox_3.JPG

Cigars are closed foot, with a pigtail on top, quite dark, and smell amazing...I will be smoking a few tonight and tom for the review tom

I swapped a buddy for one of these and while it is better than the torp it didn't do a lot for me. I liked the closed foot wrapper flavor..that sugary spicy uniqueness about it..but after about an inch it got really boring and then half way through there was literally nothing at all..no flavor to speak of. I thought it was just me but I had 2 other dudes try it and it was the same result. I must say I think the regular noella is a whole lot better..for my tastes at least.

hmm what exactly is this wet packed you speak of? never heard of it, i think they should make them all have a covered foot, adds that extra deliciousness off the first few puffs and its oh so worth it :dr

Wet packing is when the wrap freshly rolled cigars in foil. The theory is that it imrove the aging of the stick since all the freshness (for lack of a better way for me to say it) is kept in the cigar......

YMMV

aahhh kinda like illusione MJ12. thats a pretty cool idea, but does it actually work? first thing that comes to mind is higher chance of mold on the cigar.

very true, anyone know why they stopped? well, i suppose the black tubo has a covered foot but from what i've heard the tubo's don't even compare to any of the other blacks.

Well, it is true that most of the Black Label releases have a covered foot, not all of them do...Here is a photo of every Black Label that has been released...

See here (sorry for the logo, I am lazy and just stole the pics from my review of the PL) From Left to right:

* Corona Gorda (Original Bundle-Closed Foot)
* Corona Gorda (Jar Release-Closed Foot)
* Robusto (1st Event Pack-Closed Foot)
* CRA Toro(Closed Foot)
* Tubo (Closed Foot)
* Corona Gorda (2nd Event Pack-Clean Cut Foot)
* Robusto (2nd Event Pack-Clean Cut Foot)
* Petit Robusot (2nd Release Pack-Clean Cut Foot)
* Petite Lancero (Closed Foot)

So, all of releases other then the three cigars in the New Event Pack (New CG, New Robusto and PR) have covered feet...Pete has said he made those with a clean foot to differentiate between them and the ORs in the same size...

Hope that helps!

I just smoke one of these last weekend when I got them. It was my first Tat Black and now I see why so many people love them. I can not even imagine how good some of the ORs one were. I wish I would have got a box and not a 5er.

Yeah, I picked up a cab of the Tat PCR's for $145 a couple weeks back when I ran out. Since most places have those listed close to $200...that's a pretty dang good deal. I know where I'll be picking up a box of the BPL's when I run out of my first box.

Judging from the order number from my first order there soon after they announced it here (281) and my last order there (1419), I think that CYAP is getting most of it's traffic from us...it doesn't look like the CYAP part of their operations does much volume. Of course maybe I'm confused as to what high volume is for a cigar site :p lol

So don't worry Erick, your secret is safe with us :r:r
