GO METS!!!!!

:banger

The Mets hot streak inspired my company softball team tonight and we pulled out a squeaker! (Well, I'M inspired by them anyway, lol.) Our shortstop ripped a walk-off double in the bottom of the last inning with two outs, driving in the tying and winning runs!!! That kind of game will give the coach some extra gray hairs.

The latest from the 'only the Mets' file

Posted on: May 6, 2011 1:22 pm
Edited on: May 6, 2011 1:26 pm

It's almost as if the Mets don't want to be overshadowed by the Dodgers in ownership nuttiness.

Or maybe it's that they can't go more than a few days without an "only the Mets" moment.

Friday, the New York Post reported that a guy named Steve Cohen is the front-runner to buy a minority stake in the Mets.

Also Friday, the Wall Street Journal reported on its front page that a guy named Steve Cohen is the subject of a government investigation, because trades made in one of his accounts were suggested by two former employees who pled guilty to insider trading.

Yep, same Steve Cohen.

You really can't make this stuff up, can you?

So the Wilpons, who are in financial trouble because of their involvement with Bernard Madoff, are now going to sell a stake in their business to a guy under investigation for shady financial dealings?

At least Cohen, who runs the SAC Capital hedge fund, seems to have real money. Forbes estimates his net worth at $8 billion, and the Journal said makes $1 billion a year.

To be fair, the Mets insisted to the Post that there is no front-runner.

Then again, these are the Mets.

LOVE THE METS!! :r

At first that is what the news reported...but after some research was done, Wright was indeed present (he just showed up late). The other three never showed. That has stuck with me and always will.

******WASHINGTON— The Mets visited Walter Reed Army Medical Center Tuesday and unlike last year managed to escape without igniting a controversy. A team spokesman was quick to inform reporters that 42 players, coaches and team officials visited the hospital's rehab center. The only players that did not attend, relievers Francisco Rodriguez and Taylor Buchholz, traveled here Tuesday morning instead of with the rest of the team Monday night. The Mets gave both players permission to travel here Tuesday—and by extension, to skip the visit—because of family obligations. Of course, the hospital visit was voluntary. But that didn't stop last year's visit from turning into another episode of Mets Circus when Oliver Perez, Luis Castillo and Carlos Beltran didn't attend. David Wright was reported missing, but was cleared by management to arrive late. Wright showed up an hour after the team arrived.

—Brian Costa

*****“I don’t like to see people like that, so I never go there,” Castillo said. “Sometimes you see people with no legs, no arms. I don’t like to
see that.”

*****Beltran explained that he had a meeting that morning for the baseball academy he is building in Puerto Rico, but privately, he was fuming for being called out on his decision.

*****Perez declined to discuss it.

*****David Lennon of Newsday wrote on Twitter, ‘It was noticed,’ in regards to Carlos Beltran, Luis Castillo and Oliver Perez skipping yesterday’s trip to Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

“Everybody should go,” David Wright told Lennon.

*****“I think that just being an American and living in this country, we owe it to those guys to say thank you and tell them how much we appreciate what they put on the line every day,” David Wright told the MLB.com.

The Poet

Three Mets Disgraces Won’t Visit Walter Reed
Posted on September 9, 2010 by Vinny

"The worthless pieces of sh*t who play for the New York Mets declined to visit wounded soldiers at Walter Reed. Only two gave reasons…

Oliver Perez, who has the work ethic of pregnant cattle, said he only discusses baseball matters while he hasn’t mattered to baseball in two years. “I don’t answer anything about outside the stadium,” said Perez when asked why he didn’t attend.

Perez, the breathing straight-line with no curveball, will be grazing on a Mexican buffet the moment the Mets release him. Perez, more than anyone in any sport, reinforces the notion of the check-cashing leech who got big money on spec. God gave him a heavenly left arm and he did nothing with it beyond signing the obscene, $36 million contract the Mets myopically offered.

Luis Castillo, renowned for dropping balls then wondering why he doesn’t play, had this gem: “Sometimes you see people with no legs, no arms. I don’t like to see that.”

You have no brain, Luis, yet the Mets still pay you. The fans don’t like to see you, either, advocating for years that you to be traded or terminated. Though not as egregious as Perez, Castillo is emblematic of the timid team the Mets have become. Castillo does not have a language barrier; he has a logic barrier, aloof to the chore. You don’t wish him harm. You merely wish him gone.

Carlos Beltran, a divine talent who has put up sublime seasons, comes closest to exoneration. Beltran cited a clashing schedule while he apparently attended a meeting about a school he was funding in Puerto Rico. Very noble, Carlos, but reschedule.

Beltran, beyond his age and slipping skills seems to play with exponential apathy. We can understand an older player failing to reach a fly ball. We can’t understand failing to try. That’s where Mr. Beltran is headed – after he inhales the nearly $20 million the Mets owe him next year.

Bastards. All three of ‘em.

I hope the Mets show some stones and dump each and every one of them."

Interesting debate on sports talk last two days.

Beltran is obviously gone, but will the Mets trade him for a bag of balls and dump the salary, or shoot for a prospect while eating some salary? :sh

If Jorgie doesn't start hitting, Yankee DH?
Beltran can play for me any day!!!

kelmac07

jonumberone
05-14-2011, 05:43 PM
I think all met fans want a prospect, but the question is what will the Mets do?

If you remember the Billy Wagner deal, they sent him away for a non prospect just to save 3 million.
When he signed with Atlanta, Boston got 2 draft picks for him.
Mets could've used those picks!

Just read that starting this year, the Mets will start paying Bobby Bonilla $1.25 mil. per year for the next 25 years because he deferred $5 mil in the 90's. Who the hell came up with that deal. So because of that, the Mets will probably make a total salary dump for Beltran before deadline and get nothing for him.

With all the financial debacles the mets have made over the past few years, does it surprise you that in the 90's the made that deal with Bonillia?

I just hope the Wilpon's realize that they got a sweetheart deal to "acquire" the team, so they should just be happy with what they got out of it, sell it and get out of the baseball business.

I think you will see the Mets as a contender in 2013. They really need to look into moving the walls in. It's going to be hard to sign any big HR hitters until they do that.

I think you will see the Mets as a contender in 2013.

Based on What?

There minor league system ranks among the league's worst.
Reports are that they will cut payroll by half.
Reyes is most likely gone, Wright can't carry the team, and Santana will be gone by then.

I think they're gonna be as awful as they are now come 2013 :D

Never pegged you for a Met sympathizer, Ryan! ;)

Hate to say it, but props to the Yanks... They Mets won't be a contender until the Wilpons sell the team. It's a pretty damn shame that you play in New York with a brand new stadium and your own network and you nickel and dime. Yes I know about the Madoff scheme but they have been doing this for years before all that happened.

Just read the Post where Wilpon rips the Mets players. Saying Wright is a good player not a superstar, Reyes is not Carl Crawford and won't get his money and that Beltran was signed by some schmuck bases on a post season. Noe Wright and Reyes might noy be superstars but they are big enough to sell tickets and jerseys, and both of them pretty much do a good job on and off the field. When Beltran was a free agent, every Met fan, including myself wanted him. Besides the injuries the last couple of years, he's been a decent player. You can't predict injuries and if he never got them and put up numbers that he usually did no one would be *****ing, including me. But for an owner to come out and say that about his players is completely wrong. Yes steinbrener did it but Wilpon is no steinbrener. If he saw something wrong, he went out and fixed it. He didn't care what the cost was, he's in new York and wld put out a competitive team. Do us all a favor Fred and SELL THE TEAM...., sorry for rant....

Exactly!! 6 good innings...only to piss it away in the 7th.

Well, here's perhaps a bigger difference between the two leagues than the DH one. In the AL it is considered a quality start if the pitcher gives you 6 good innings before the game is put into the hands of the bullpen. In the NL they seem to expect more innings out of the starter . . . which may work just fine within the league, what with the normally lighter hitting, but can bite you during interleague play.

Of course, to have success by turning games over to the bullpen to close, one first need have a bullpen. :D

Agreed... George went out and got things done when things got bad. He let the players know if they didn't perform he would go out and get someone that can. Wilpon is going to use Beltrans contract as an excuse not to sign any big time players to any long term deals. The ship is sinking fast but yet he's so bullheaded he won't jump.

While it is true...he had has his share of injuries. I don't trade him unless we get a few TOP prospects (and they'd better be pitchers). I am confident Tejada can play short. The question is whether he will hit or not. I could see that Yankees making a bid for him. My :2? Please. The Yankees are not likely to give up top pitching prospects for Reyes, as they need them more than they do a prima donna shortstop, no matter how he hits and fields. Also, as when Donnie Baseball retired, whoever tries to replace Jeets will not only need to compete on the field but also handle the pressure of stepping into the shoes of a beloved fixture. Tino Martinez could do so, and did. Jose has never shown the grace necessary to accomplish that. Sorry, but that's the way I see it.

Another win last night and another slugfest...16-9. My Mets are putting some runs on the board without Wright/Davis. Two games over .500 and in third place. :tu :tu

Well at least it will be a series win.
Verlander is on the top of his game right now.
Mets are going to have a tough time tonight! :2

I agree...this will be the night we get shut out.

I hope so after my Tigs giving up 30 runs in two games. Horrible. JV has been rediculous as of late. I guess that we've expected him to elevate his game to this level. In both of his no-hitters he was threw over 100 in the 9th inning. He has perfect form and he now has command of 4 pitches. I think perfecting his changup is what has helped him take that next step. It's pretty funny watching guys wave at a pitch that is still 5 ft in front of them. Of course you can't blame them; how do you adjust when he can go from 101 down to the mid-80s with the same arm motion & speed.

I expected that one yesterday. I really hope they rev up against the skanks today. Only thing worse than a Yankee's fan is a Philly fan. Grampa Jeter will not play thank god, he owns the mets

Bay hits two HR and Pelfrey actually pitched 6 shutout innings (it's always the 7th where he blows it). Smart move Terry Collins. :D

Reyes on the DL could be good for the Mets. Who's gonna want a player that's that prone to injury? When he's healthy, he's amazing. The Mets should take that risk and resign him ASAP.

With Pelfrey pitching tonight (and down 2-0), worst my Mets can do at the break is 46-45...never would have thought we'd do that with the current pitching staff and with all the injuries. Terry Collins gets my vote for Manager of the Year. :D

Mets trade Krod!

Love it!! :tu :tu

For cash and two players...

It was not immediately clear how much cash was involved in Tuesday's trade. It was a significant enough amount that the Commissioner's Office signed off on the deal, Melvin said.

The Mets will choose their players to be named from a list of five Brewers Minor Leaguers by a date in September. Why September? Doesn't help us this year. Better be some young pitchers.

Now he can beat people up in the Brewers Family Room. :r :r

jonumberone
07-13-2011, 05:50 AM
Mets are the ones who sent the cash!

I think they could've gotten more at the deadline.
Players to be named are usually useless!

The trade was announced only a half-hour after the All-Star Game, with the Mets sending K-Rod and cash to Milwaukee for two players to be named.

This was nothing more than not having to pick-up his option if he appears in 55 games (saved the Mets $ 17.5 million). Complete money saving deal by the Mets. While I understand it, I agree with you Dom....we could have gotten a better deal at the deadline.
