New York Yankees 2011

Spring Training is about 1 1/2 months away now. Yankees look like the Wild Card team on paper.

I really hope so also. There is nothing promising out there. Right now they have one guy in the rotation with guarenteed performance and that is CC. Hughes had a lot of wins last year but the offense bailed him out a lot. If AJ can get his head out of his butt maybe he will be productive.

Well, i'm hoping they can pick up a B grade starter somewhere to anchor the back end of the rotation. CC is money, Hughes is decent, AJ I wouldn't count on, Nova who knows, and Mitre sucks. We are in trouble if thats who we throw out opening day.

Don't crown them yet!
A-Gon is a big addition, and I am not going to diminish his value, but let him prove his worth in the AL east first.
Lots more pressure now and they will pitch him different than in the NL.
The Crawford signing was one of Theo's worst.
He's a GOOD player, but a player who's main + attribute (speed) will be diminished playing left in Fenway.
Also if you watched any Red Sox baseball last year, the team MVP was Beltre!
Lester was brilliant last year and I thought Bucholtz was better, but he still hasn't pitched a full season.
Beckett is another year older and never made his money in the regular season.
And one of these years Papi won't be able to turn around his awful start.

As a Reds fan, trust me when I say that A-Gon is NOT a big addition. He'll be a headache for the fans most of the year. He could be a great player but is on the DL a lot, goes into big-time slumps and his range is overrated.

Perhaps, but you have to look at the whole line-up; they will be all mutually supporting, in that, until you get to the 8 and 9 spots, it'll be "pick your poison". Just who would you pitch around? The two weak spots, as I see it, are V-Tek and Scutaro, and they most likely will bat 8 and 9. Also important to remember is that they'll play 81 games in our little band-box in Boston; the wall giveth and the wall taketh away. If Crawford and Ellsbury bat toward the top of the line-up (as I suspect), imagine the base running possibilities.

There was no team in Baltimore in 1900 because the National League contracted it. You are not getting it. Same city, same name, but not the same franchise. The Baltimore Orioles of the NL were done after the 1899 season. The team was contracted, disbanded, destroyed, the players went elsewhere to play in 1900. In 1901 the American League wanted to put a team in New York but the Giants blocked the formation of this new franchise in New York. This new franchise then used their back up plan and went to Baltimore and called themselves the Baltimore Orioles. They hired former Baltimore player/manager McGraw for 1901-1902.

So Yankee fans, think Mariano will pass Hoffman on the all time saves list this year?

I understand Soriano is younger than Wood, but he proved himself here in NY.
Wood had a 1 year club option at 10 million. We have seen more than 1 closer come here in a setup role and be awful, ala Tom gordon, Kyle Farnsworth.

As for the saves thing, It's kind of like the who's the best HR hitter of all time question. The answer is obviously Babe Ruth even tho people have hit more HR than him.
Hoffman may have more saves but he has always been awful in a big spot and Mo is the better closer regardless of how many saves he has.

Soriano proved himself in the AL east, thats good enough for me. Remember Wood was struggling in Cleveland when we got him, he turned things around nicely in pinstripes. But he did struggle in the post season, he was too up and down. Soriano at least will have a higher trade value if he flounders in the environment given his track record.

As for all time best closer, there's no doubt in my mind it's Mo. But you still get a few lone Padre fans that point to Hoffmans record, overlooking how bad he was in the post season and the fact he had several more years pitching as a closer than Mo, and use it to try to put him in the same league. Hoffman was great and i'm sad to see him retire but he is a distant second to Rivera in terms of greatness :2

He did fine against the Twins, it was Texas that did him in and he was not alone as all the Yankees pitchers got knocked around by the Rangers.

I guess his ERA and BAA were pretty good (2.93 & .231). However, he only pitched 40 total innings, which would mean his "yesterday" earns him $10,000 per out "tomorrow". Plus, he's a righty. Plus plus, his ERAs in four previous "yesterdays" were 5.19 (2009), 5.95 ('08), 4.97 ('07), and . . gulp! . . . 8.31 ('06).

NEW YORK -- A person familiar with the arrangements says Yankees pitcher Andy Pettitte plans to announce his retirement Friday at a news conference at Yankee Stadium.

The person spoke to the Associated Press on Thursday on condition of anonymity because the news conference had not yet been announced.

Pettitte has been telling the team since the end of the season that it was likely he wouldn't play in 2011. He became a free agent and has not attempted to negotiate a contract.

His intention to retire first was reported by YES Network's Michael Kay.

The 38-year-old left-hander is 240-138 with a 3.88 ERA n 16 major-league seasons. He excelled in the postseason, setting a major league record for wins by going 19-10 with a 3.83 ERA.

Pettitte's departure leaving a huge hole in the Yankees' rotation, with no proven starters behind CC Sabathia, Phil Hughes and A.J. Burnett.

He can hit, like Dom said trade bait. It's nice to see so much good young talent for a change, I don't think the Yankees are in all that bad of shape. Plenty of youngsters around to give chances to, plenty of prospects to trade if they need something come trading deadline. I'm curious to see who gets the backup catching job since Cervelli is hurt, and Martin is about as durable as glass these days.

MedicCook

I think it is going to be Martin and Montero at catcher. If Montero isn't playing up to par then they can send him back to Triple-A to play everyday when Cervelli comes back. When Martin gets hurt and he will get hurt then they can rotate Montero & Cervelli.

Yankees started making roster cuts today.

*Rule 5 pickup Daniel Turpen was returned to the Red Sox.

*Right-handers Adam Warren, David Phelps, Brian Anderson and Buddy Carlyle, left-hander Andy Sisco, infielder Bradley Suttle and outfielders Austin Krum and Daniel Brewer were sent to minor league camp.

and saw no infractions committed.
