Me, I think they totally fudged up, the old bands were very cool looking and I think the new ones look to cartoonish. Your thoughts?

Yeah they messed up the bands, but the blend is the same. I don't buy cigars for their pretty bands or boxes.

I think there is only a few people I remember saying that they actually liked the new band. I certainly don't. Does that make me not want to buy the cigar....eh...I wouldn't go that far.

I love the 601s. I have to agree though. The new band is pretty terrible looking.

I think they both suck but the new ones are by far worse than the previous version. :sh But at the end of the day we don't smoke the bands.

That is absolutely correct, but working at two cigar shops I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt, bands make a difference. Not as much to the seasoned smoker, but the beginner, it means a lot.

I had never tried a 601 until after reading about them here. I saw them in the shop and thought "Generic band? They must be one of those 'cheap but good' smokes." You definitely can't judge a cigar by the band, but there is a lot to be said for first impressions, especially if your reputation isn't already known.

Which is exactly my point, especially seeing as they already had a great looking band, then to dumb it down just makes no sense.

The new bands to me are horrible. The new bands make the 601 blues look like a cheap stick.

But are they going to keep me from buying/smoking the cigar? No

Am I going to make fun of the bands every chance I get? Yes

While it's true that we don't smoke the bands, it's still a form of art IMO. The old bands were nice and classy looking and the new ones are too simple and generic looking. If someone asks me what I'm smoking I usually pass them the band or show them the band if it's still attached to the cigar. If I ever end up with any of these new banded 601's I will simply tell the person what I'm smoking, as the new bands are not presentable.

I'd rather they cut corners with the band and not the smoke but yes the new are silly and the old ones to me were cool. But the new are more distinct to know what your smoking red, blue, black how can one confuse that with the new bands.

I agree. I usually enjoy looking at the bands. Especially the elaborate nc one's like La Aroma De Cuba EE and My Father, etc. The new 601 band is atrocious! Man, newbs are gonna see the 601 Blue on the shelf and wonder why a "value" stick costs $5 or $6! :D

What everyone else said. A very "gaudy" band, if you will. Honestly, I even prefer the La Sirena band to this, because even though that band is like 4", the colors are at least a little more muted.

Also, I'm not going to lie, the first time I saw 601s, I was confused as to why a budget stick was so expensive. :r

While you don't smoke the bands, they do make a statment about the cigar, and presentation is very important in this industry. You don't see many high end cigars with crappy looking bands. Opus X for example, the band is stunning. Padron Family Reserve, very elegant looking band.

The new 601's make it look like something that belongs in a $40 bundle, IMO.

I definitely agree. I've never actually smoked a 601 because I thought it was a budget stick at a non-budget stick price...

Those new bands look as lame as the "Patel Bros" band, another plain jane, cheap band.
Dont get me wrong, i dont buy a stick based on the band but it sure is nice to see quality workmanship go into it.
One of my favoirtes is the San Cristobals band. Talk about classy and beautiful.

You clip one end, set fire to the other, then suck smoke out of the end you just clipped.

Depending where you are from, maybe this was a tax increase? I recently had that happen (from New York). 75% FML

I have better stuff to worry about than a manufacturer changing their band style. :2

The old bands had too little of the color of the smoke. I had to look at it for a while to see if I had a green, blue, or black. These are much easier to read. They kind of look like an old style band. Don't love and don't hate either.

Absolutely true, which also holds true for 95% of every post on the site. It's conversation, just looking for opinion. I don't recall actually anybody saying they were worrying about it, just wondering what people opinions were is all.

That's why as a beginner it seems like a good idea to shop at a B&M. The conversations you have can educate you so quickly. I was ready to turn down the 601 (yes for the band), and then one of the workers at the shop suggested it. And yes it was delicious. Mmm...

"Cartoonish" is the perfect way to describe the new bands, although I don't like the old bands all that much either. On the old bands the 601 seems hidden, and they could have emphasized it better without resorting to the style of the new bands.

Looks like the cost of the band may come down a bit.

Four Colors, embossed. = big dough
Three Colors, non embossed = plain band, less money.

Maybe the cost of the cigar will come down. Just sayin

Or maybe they are off setting a production price increase. Change to a cheaper band so that the profit margin stays the same without having to raise the price of the cigar.

My only rant is they discontinued the 601 Black which is/was a fantastic cigar.

Who cares about the band? What matters is the tobacco underneath. Eddie Ortega did announce a price decrease on 601. I don't mind the new bands at all. Makes them stick out and are much easier to read and see. They looked great at IPCPR.

I think the new bands are pretty bad, but the cigar is still great.

I do not buy a cigar for the band.
However, when looking to try a new cigar I have to admit, the marketing of the cigar does have some impact. If the box and band look cheap and I am looking at a pricey cigar, I will more than likely pass. If the marketing shows that there has been some effort put forth, then I assume (until proven otherwise) that the cigar had that much attention as well.

Just my two cents...

It's a conversation, simple as that. It has absolutely nothing to do with the amount of time I/we have on our hands. If there were no discussion on the board, it would be quite lame. There was a change of bands, a drastic change of bands, hell, I don't even smoke 601's, really don't care for them that much.
