just ran across it again while cleaning. Im thinking this could turn into a rather awesome travel humidor. good idea or bad?

also, suggestions on how to do it right...

is the case air tight??? I think it would work great.

Devanmc
12-30-2010, 10:32 AM
no but that can be very easily fixed with a flight case like this

now i really need advice for properly removing glue from the wood or what to do about it?

Mineral spirits or denatured alcohol would be the best bet for getting it off without screwing with the wood.

Are you going to line it with something else, or just make it air tight and use it as is? If your going to re-line it, does the rest of the stuff really need to come off?

Devanmc

idk about the rest of the stuff, As i haven't decided yet. As you could see from the first pics, the thick foam did need to go.

Is there any odor to the case? Its hard to tell with the pic how thick the wood is thats left. If you could just lightly sand the inside and then find some thin cedar from boxes I would just line it and check for air tightness. If you are truly just talking using it as a temp travel case I would just find some tuperware that fits and get some beads and call it a day. Good luck looks like a good project

pretty thin, but a case of this type is very strong. Also, no noticeable odors

looks cool. i would just lay cedar in there and call it a day...but that may not be wise.

"Goo Gone" might help with the glue but it could leave behind an odor. Sanding or even a steel wool could work as well, but covering it up might be your better option.

Goo gone is BadAss. WD-40 works well. Wouldn't worry too much about an odor. Let it dry after your done. Then you can water wash with baking soda.

From there you could seal the interior if you're still worried.

How you finish the inside or make it air-tight depends on how you are going to use it. If just for weekend herfs, I wouldn't worry about it being air-tight, just put your perfectly stored cigars in ziplocks and they will stay good for days. If you plan on using it for longer than a week, I would try to get it air-tight and use beads or humi packs. :2

I agree goo gone works good but that odor is intense. I would just line it. Although even a good razor blade will take away the glue pretty quickly and easily. Stick a flash light in there (preferably an LED) and see how good/bad it seals.

I'm interested in knowing how this is accomplished!

You can also try a blow dryer or a small iron. Both will loosen the glue with no stink!:tu

I use a heat gun with good results.

A quick strip of weather stripping or cut and fit cedar to overlap just as in your humidor. A good silicon sealant would work too.

One of those shark steamer cleaner things might work to soften up the glue and then scrape it off with a razorblade.

Alot of travel humidors have foam insterts, perhaps if you were able to find a nice bed of solid foam and then use pick and pluck to make your cigar cradles. Sporting goods stores are pretty good about carrying pick and pluck in their gun departments.

If it is an anvil case, those are really good about keeping the water out anyway, I have had rain fall on my anvil cases and the inside stays dry. I don't see you leaving your cigars out in the rain very often. Great looking case, outside has some attitude. A great sign of any road case.

be careful with the heat gun and the wood!!!

Devanmc
12-31-2010, 08:37 AM
yes ofcourse. its going to be tricky though. automotive heat guns are by no means "warm"

DroptheE- BTW the case is made by Omega :sh

That's probably the best idea, he is skilled enough to custom fit it and make it look like you
meant to do it. You want the best work you can get on that interior. If I recall, those cases
seal neatly but not necessarily airtight. Best idea I heard yet. Ed can do great things with wood.
If you have the money he might slap some nice veneer on that exterior and make you a real
show-stopper.

Very cool! A bead of silicone along the edge of the seal might help keep it air tight.

i want the exterior left alone. nothing to worry about beating on, thats the point of these cases.

Golfnut has picked up the project and breathing new life into this. Im most excited. It gets shipped out tomorrow to get pimped out :tu :dr

If im really really really really lucky itll be back in time for The shack.

Devanmc
07-25-2011, 08:07 AM
that was one hell of a shipping bill. $49 usps priority. that hurt...

golfnut the tracking is 03103490000178459642

I am guessing first class would have been half that, but would have taken a week and would have no tracking.
I also would like to see this at the shack, but tick tock on that one.

Devanmc
07-25-2011, 08:37 AM
yeah im really praying it comes threw on that. but idk time is short and esp with having to season this(cedar lining and shelves). that seems unlikely. If i do have it back by then i will bring it just to show you.

just ordered 8oz of HCM beads(over kill but recommended) and a hydrometer. Both being shipped directly to golfnut for this project.

yeah i have about 12oz of HCM in my cooler from my last humi, then another 2lbs of heartfelt. I like the HCM better.

I keep HCM in the non thermo vino and they keep it right at 63 where I want it. The edgestar has the HF and I have also had zero problems there.

same here. HCM just seem to respond faster but are harder to maintain. the heartfelt seem slower but are easier to maintain. oh well.

But i choose HCM for the traveler because with it likely opening and closing often. id like the beads to respond quickly.

it sounded good at the time.

I agree. I rarely open the second vino that the HCM are in so it maintains perfect and I haven't had to recharge them in a few months.

The HF either because I have a "drip" system set up in the edgestar that catches the condensation in a small bowl and the HF can just absorb what they need out ofthe air.

Devanmc
07-26-2011, 07:34 AM
I just have a 150qt cooler with the the 12oz of HCM and 2lbs of HF. maintains great and even with a 120mm computer can circulating things.

for giggles here is the case before it went out. with a very partial hint to my end of the trade
