View Full Version : Puff, Puff, Pass.

Okay. I know at all these herf events that a lot of you do the puff, puff, pass thing as a way to sample cigars. Correct me if I am mistaken, of course.

I honestly don't understand this. Doesn't it take a lot more than a few puffs to truly experience a cigar?

Basically, what I'm gettin' at: Is it really worth the saliva swapping? Am I the only one that is kinda grossed out by this idea?

I'd rather swap spit with a woman, not a bunch of guys.. no offense of course to any fellow CA members that play on the other team. -(P

I extrapolated from some of the posts I've seen pertaining to various herf events that it might be considered rude if you don't participate.. wassupwitdat? :sh

Also, for anybody that's ever passed a J around in their youth(or the present;) ), isn't it frustrating when you put the J to your lips only to find somebody has slobbered all over it? This is my dilemma with the PPF.

Enlighten me, please.

Yes, this can become somewhat annoying to say the least.
But when you have people bring sticks that are older than I am by a long shot, I think it's worth it.
I'd like to be able to sat I tasted a 1940's Clear havana and enjoyed it (or hated it as it may be) then to say I missed the chance.

From what I hear sometimes they'll PPP VERY expensive or VERY rare cigars. 50-70's Dunhills/Davidoff CC's that have price tags of $80-$150 per cigar.

But I agree with you and fully understand your reasons not to want to participate in a PPP, I really wouldn't either.

It depends on the smokes being passed around, and your level of OCD. I don't really give a crap about a tiny bit of spit, especially if it's with a few friends that I know well, and frankly, there are some cigars that are passed around at HERFs that leave a lasting impression of fleeting nirvana even after just a few puffs. It's kind of like like saying, why just have sex with a supermodel if you can't marry her? Because buddy, if that's the closest you can get, you might as well go for it.

The cigar typically passes from start to completion, so you definitely get to experience the changes.

Basically, what I'm gettin' at: Is it really worth the saliva swapping? Am I the only one that is kinda grossed out by this idea?
It isn't always worth it, but why take the chance of missing out on a great cigar you may never be able to sample otherwise? A 1970's DPG I was able to sample recently leaps to my mind.

Totally up to you whether you wish to participate. Never saw any comments at any I've participated in if you choose not to participate.

I see all of your points, and I understand your positions, but I do not think I will participate in one.

Besides that, even though I cannot enjoy some of the massively rare and expensive smokes due to a lack of funds right now, I believe that it is a only a matter of time before I will be able to.

Big dreams! Once I get there, it's free rare smokes for everybody. That'll make up for my unwillingness to partake in the PPP, right? :D

No problem in not participating. For those that do, remember to dry lip the cigar though.

There is a constant rotation of cigars being passed at the S.H.I.T. herfs. Sometimes people don't participate, no big deal. I usually do but have no problems skipping a cigar that didn't do much for me on later passes.

My whole point was that I don't think I would want to be involved in a PPP in the first place so it would never even come to that. But, if by some chance I got over my anxiety about germs and somebody handed me a slimy smoke, then I would most certainly decline and possibly comment on the slimy party foul.. in true ball busting fashion.

I just wanted to see what the fuss was about with the PPP, as I had never heard of it in the cigar world before.

Regardless, your response really rubbed me the wrong way, and I don't appreciate being talked down to.

..and you ignored my Japanese, which was polite by the way.

I really don't think he was talking down to you, I think you started with the "bub" thing, but hey thats the peril of typing, sometimes the emotion you want doesn't come through right.

I've been a member for a little over a year and I can tell you there is no other place like it. There are people on here that will pretty much tell you your favorite smoke is crap (which is ok...leaves more for me) and then turn around and give you the shirt off there back ( most of the time it's in the form of cigars). I know if I'm somewhere and have a chance to try a CC I'm going for it. Hell Iv'e shared hits off bottles of liqueur and you more likely to get some backwash off that than a little moisture off a cigar.

Well, I intended "bub" as a term of endearment.

I also assumed that he can read/write in Japanese because of the Japanese in his signature.. so I typed out something friendly and grammatically respectful due to him being much older than me.

You know what they say about assuming...

I do appreciate everyone's replies.

I don't do that much P-P-Ping anymore, because my pallete seems to burn out quickly many times when I do, and they are usually at all day or even weekend herfs.

I have participated in many though, and have tried some wonderful rare and old smokes that I never would have had a chance to sample otherwise. Done amongst a small group, you certainly do get a chance to see how the cigar develops, as long as it doesn't get overheated. Experienced P-P-Pers know how to avoid this. And as Dennis said, dry lips, please. ;)

One other thing that I haven't seen mentioned that has been cool about many P-P-Ps has been the contrast between different cigars...truly helped me become better about picking out different flavors and profiles in cigars. Experienced BOTLs seem to become good at deciding which cigars to put into the passes, similar strength levels so that one cigar doesn't overpower everything else in tha pass.

They are a great learning experience, especially for those new to CCs. :2

It sounds like you have a paradigm you either want to change, or reinforce, and uh... sometimes I am at a lack of understanding, being pretty tactless myself.
I am trying to be polite and tactful in English, as I am not fluent in Japanese.

Sometimes when someone is coming across as arrogant, a quick pm defuses the situation quickly, especially when you suddenly realized "Oh Crap, I think that may not have come across as I would have wanted it to." I've done it. Hell, maybe I am doing it now.

I have gotten to experience some of the most rare and expensive cigars in the world(most I would never be able to aquire) in ppp's with some of the world's greatest people. I consider myself very lucky.

A few years ago, several of us here participated in a 12 hour ppp. It was one of the best times I have ever had.

Also known as the shack herf. ;) :r

The PPP's there were some of my favorite cigar experiences, and not even primarily because of the cigars. The camaraderie experienced was awesome; everyone talking about the same cigars, laughing, discussing, pulling out rare smokes to share (Patrick and I were trying to outdo one another, he won ;):r), "what was this one again?", taking the bands of Dunhill Cabinettas (and the like) and passing it around for everyone to guess what it was, just a lot of fun on top of the good cigars.

I admit to having to overcome the 'slober factor' but it was one of those 'jump in the cold pool' moments, once done it was a pleasure. And now it's no big deal, hey its a PPP, its worth it. :tu
