View Full Version : Advice on a bicycle

I need some advice on buying a bicycle. Money is kinda tight so i cant spend a lot. Started out thinking mountain bike but have kinda switched to a hybrid. Walmart has a Schwinn hybrid that looks pretty good and has good reviews for $244. They also have a Huffy for $119. I am prolly gonna go to a bike shop in town and see if they might have something used at a price thats in my budget. Anyone have any pointers or advice? I will probably do most if not all of my riding on paved roads and would like to ride 20 to 50 miles a week. Maybe more once i get going.

A road bike might be better if you plan to ride on the road. :2

Thought about it but might ride a trail once in a while.

trail riding is great and works me out more than road riding does.

but it has also given me more scars than road riding has as well.

Craigslist all the way at your price range. Buy a road bike or a dutch style commuter.

What is your height? Any idea what size bike you need? I have a cannondale road bike I have been thinking of putting on the bay. I would be willing to trade for cigars, and could bring to EPIC if you wanted to try it out.

5'10" or 11" not sure if i have enough cigars to trade for a bike though. How much would you like to get for it?

Iron Horse makes great bikes. Good specs on the one in the link above. Also, I've used RS before and they were good.

5'10" or 11" not sure if i have enough cigars to trade for a bike though. How much would you like to get for it?

I am 5'10 or a hair under that. Long story but basically I have two cannondales that have the same frame. A 54cm six13. http://www.cannondale.com/usa/usaeng/Products/2008/Road/Details/1677-8RCT6T-Six13-6-(triple)
We could work something out. I don't want a lot of $ for it.

If you can get a Cannondale, do it. I owned a Cannondale mountain bike, best bike I've owned. :2

Stay away from wal mart crap bikes. Better off with a used good bike as a heavy steel walmart anchor. My wife has an older giant comfort and I have a low end cannondale( American made) mountain hard tale. Both are lighter than my daughters 20" walmart.

These guys make bikes with leftover components from good bike companies. They then slap a frame on them and you get discount prices. The frame might say Motobecane, but it has the same components as a Trek, Cannondale, Specialized etc. You might pay $200 for what would be a $400 bike with a pretty name on it. :2

That Motobecane carbon frame for $495, now that is a deal! I am sure it's made in Asia, but cares at that price. Many finer frames are made there too. The only thing "made in italy" is the "made in italy" sticker lol...

If you want to get into a road bike, proper fitting is very important. The top tube length and stand-over height being most critical. If it is a used bike, make sure they fork has enough length to get the handlebar stem to the correct drop. If it is too low, you have an uncomfortable ride, that is for sure.

The right fit will make it MUCH more comfortable. I got fit for my road bike, and I don't find the seat all that painful, honestly. :) I ride a Trek, BTW.

Bobby's bike does look like a nice ride.
