View Full Version : Pair Recomendation for a night of cards

Chingas

I want to pick up a box of CC's and a bottle or two of something a little less than normal for a night of cards in early December.

So the sticks would have to be good young and able to purchase in the next few days. I'm hoping the booze, whiskey or rum will compliment the smokes.

I'm really hoping the smokes and booze will compliment the cards. And then it will be a trifecta of happiness!

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

Seeing that you're a Partagas fan, I would recommend the presidentes. I had 2 over the summer that were fresh that were quite nice for something without any age on it at all.

After looking at my usual source, there are some really good prices out there right now. I really like cigars with Padron Anejo or Don Julio Anejo myself.

For booze,

Rum I like
1. Don Q grand anejo
2. Ron zacapa 23 year
3. Zaya 12 year

Bourbon
1. Weller barrel proof
2. Four roses 120 anniversary
3. Woodford master's collection

Any of those 6 would be pure bliss. Bourbon might be a bit overpowering, but I don't think so. Just make sure your friends don't dilute the piss out of either, I hate when I bring top shelf booze and people pour mixers in it.

Thanks Duane. Huge Partagas fan!

Bill. You dilute your bourbon? I would think someone might mix with coke or pepsi but I was more thinking drinking something on the rocks while smoking. Good, no?

No I don't my friends do....AT MOST my bourbon gets ONE ice cube per 4 oz's.....99% of the time it's just straight in a glass.

Yeah I'm strongly opposed to diluting top shelf alcohol. I was hoping your friends wouldn't after you drop $60-90 on a bottle.....if coke goes anywhere near it I go postal.

I like Buffalo Trace - it is a great bourbon, but more budgetary for me. Yes, it goes well with cigars, and you know your choice there.

The Rev!

Are these bottles were speaking of available to purchase at a normal liquor store?

Later tonight I'll research these a little bit more. I thank you for all the info so far.

Bill86

Yes they should be, how I usually buy my bottles is go to the largest liquor store in the area. They should have those.....

if not

Noah's mill
Bakers
Bookers
Basil haydens
Blantons
Eagle rare single barrel

Many Thanks Bill! I'll take another look at them later on tonight. I'll let you know later tonight.

Update. The smokes might be Duanes suggestion of Partagas Presidentes.

Bookers Bourbon makes the absolute best Old Fashioned I have ever tasted. Unfortunately I can't remember what I smoked that night. Or where my pants went.

Two bourbons that are generally available everywhere and are fairly inexpensive but great are Evan Williams Single Barrel and Russell's Reserve. I like Bill and Rev's choices as well.

For a good "pairs well with everything" Scotch I would choose Balvenie 12y Doublewood. Yes I know there are better Scotchs but this one pairs well with so many cigars.

For rum I would second the nomination for Ron Zacapa 23

Yes Pairs Well. That's what I'm looking for. So price dosnt have to be high end as long as the pairing is right on. Thanks.

Lately I have been pairing Chivas Regal 12 Yr Scotch with my cigars. Haven't had a bad experience yet. :tu

Can never go wrong with Monte 2's

Upmann Corona Majors or Partagas Petite Corona Especiales are relatively inexpensive and smoke well fresh. As for the liquor there are a lot of great suggestions already made. However, no matter what you serve, your guest should enjoy it the way they see fit. Not in the way you expect them to enjoy it. If the cost/quality is a problem, then serve something less "special". When I serve booze/cocktails, my only concern is that my guests enjoy their beverage.

Maybe I got duds but the fresh Monte 2's I've had were flavorless and boring. The '06's I've had have been terrific!

Your cents are worth a million. I feel the same about the booze. They can do what they want with it. I just want it available.

I got to be honest about the Coronas Majors. I havnt had the best luck with them. Now the PPCE I can voice no opinion. Havnt had those yet.

What's your take on the Presidentes Peter?

A little more coin but not a bad choice.

I almost forgot one of my absolute favorite short/bargain smokes. The San Cristobal El Principe.

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions. I'm really leaning on the Presidentes.

I'm undecided completely on the booze.

Nothing wrong with jack, I have an undying love for gentlemen jack. Good stuff, got me drunk MANY MANY of times and for the price point, it's fantastic.

I enjoy Jack as well. I dont think I can find Jack to be very good at complementing cigars, but if you enjoy it, what is wrong with just pairing it up anyway? No sense trying to find something to pair up perfectly and have a bad pair just completely ruin the night.

Smoke what you like, and drink what you like. You can't go wrong with that.

Thanks Derrick.

Im more looking out for the other guys. Not a tried a true pairing but one that has been tried and enjoyed by many before me.

Plus I'd like to try something different and offer something different than the "norm"

It's hard to find the perfect balance, for me I don't have the complex palate for cigars. Now booze....different story. What I think would compliment cigars well would be

Zaya 12 year rum - Made from sugar cane, it's got a sweet thing going on that is just smoother and not harsh on the palate at all.

Four Roses 120 Anniversary - The hints of vanilla and soft spice mellow this beast a great deal, I would think it wouldn't overpower the palate at all when smoking a cigar.

Those would be my top 2 picks with cigars in mind. But honestly I think just a great cigar + great booze + good friends = Good times. Even if the pairing isn't on.....it's gotta be a great night. I went to the bar with some friends and lit up some Montecristos and it just made the night. Not the best cigars, not the best alcohol...it's the experience.

Edit for the record, I had a Macallan 12 on the rocks with a Montecristo and it was fantastic. Several russian qualudes and shots as well.

Bookers and Blantons are two bourbons your can not go wrong with. I have also had some luck with Extra Anejo Tequilas however they can be very pricey and hard to find. As for the CCs I do not smoke them that often so I would be hard pressed to recommend much of a pairing but with the two bourbons above I have never had a bad cigar paired with it.

I took the pic! Sorry Brother. Yeah, I wear all black. Black boots, black socks, black jeans, black t-shirt usually with a black work shirt unbuttoned, black hat, long hair and a couple peircings with a couple tats.

Hopefully we meet on 11-11-11 but there is certainly no guarentee. Just a hope!:tu

Santa Santa Santa. I sampled the Crystal Head vodka buy was actually consuming myself in beers that were bombed to me from a friend. I recently started drinking again and I sampled many different beers. It turns out I'm a fan of Heffenweiser type beers. I guess they are wheat beers.

The only one I remember the name of started with Hacker-

What does Santa drink?
