I am currently tasting a bottle of Ultimat Vodka that I got for free to sample. It is very smooth, and I am comparing to my long time favorite Ketel One.

Has anyone else tried this vodka? I must say it is very good indeed.

What are your favorites?

Belvedere is the best bang for the buck IMO.

I just started drinking a new vodka, Primo, it is made from Malbec grapes and it is fantastic.

I buddy introduced me to Ultimat Vodka and it's hands down the best vodka that I've tried (I admit that I'm fairly new to good vodka). He also recommeded stoli elite, but I haven't tried that one yet.

Currently on a Luksusowa kick and have been since going to Poland recently. Good, clean, and it's cheap. Hard to beat that combo.

Edit: Another decent (and super duper cheap) one that I've had here and a ton of in Poland is Sobieski. Not as good as Luksusowa but you can get a handle of it for less than a decent cigar and it mixes just fine.

Luksusowa has now replaced all the more expensive vodkas I used to keep in the freezer. I actually prefer the taste of it (which is truly all that matters) and would still buy it at a much higher price.

Edit2: My true favorite is probably Zubrowka (the Polish one made with bison grass, which is illegal to import to the US--the version they sell here is crap).

Edit3: Wow, looks like I've become a Polish vodka whore :r

I drink Svedka. :D If I want something a little more refined, I will buy belvedere. But not very often. I only buy nice vodka when making martinis.

My girlfriend doesn't care what kind of vodka she drinks, so for her it's whatever is on sale for 9.97 for a half gallon

I like gin martini's as well. I really think gin is an acquired taste tho, I remember the first time I had gin I wanted to spit it out right away.

That said, I am by no means a purist, I enjoy both vodka martini's and gin martini's from their own respective stance.

Also, I made up my decision, Ultimat is hands down the best Vodka I have ever tasted. Get yourself a bottle or order some at a bar if you see it. On the rocks this baby shows its true eliteness.

Not a straight vodka drinker, doesn't do anything for me. I can do it sure...but over-proof bourbons (53%-67.4%) are my drink of choice, straight no ice or water.

Also a friend got me hooked on vodka redbulls....they are fantastic for getting hammered at least the way I make them.

+1 for Edit 2...

BUT, why the hell can't you get the proper stuff in the US? Is Bison Grass gonna kill me, or is it the fact that there is a blade of said grass in the bottle, which might mean some drunk twunt accidentally plants it and introduces an alien grass species to the US?

According to Wikipedia "because bison grass contains the toxic compound coumarin, which is prohibited as a food additive by the Food and Drug Administration, importing of Żubrówka into the United States was banned in 1978 by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms."

And the reason why the U.S. version tastes different "when produced according to traditional methods (between one and two kilograms of grass per thousand litres of alcohol), Żubrówka contains approximately 12 milligrams of coumarin per litre. In 1999, Polish distilleries introduced reformulated U.S.-export versions of the product, sometimes using artificial flavours and colours, always with the emblematic blade of grass in every bottle, but "neutralised" and coumarin-free."

That's mental. I bet there are millions of Eastern Europeans, and Asians, who will testify that Coumarin isn't all that deadly.

The wife has issues with the cheaper vodkas, so we only keep Chopin in the house (normally).

However, we have a Horseradish vodka (can't remember the brand, but it's made in MN) that makes EXCELLENT Bloody marys. num num num

IMHO, the "best" choice in vodka depends upon what you prefer to drink. If you are a vodka martini guy or drinking it straight, it makes sense to go with a higher-end brand you like. NB, your definition of a high-end brand may differ, as some may consider, say, Absolut or Grey Goose as being so while others may not. However, if you mainly want to drink mixed cocktails, such as a Bloody Mary or Screwdriver, there is no good reason to pay a premium for your vodka. Smirnoff has won a number of blind taste tests, and will work perfectly well for you.

In short, if you stay away from the Popovs of the world you can't go wrong. :D
