Don't get me wrong - I like and admire the Twinkies. I picked them to win the Central from Day 1. They are a good organization that plays good ball, and tries to do things the right way. But let's be honest . . . all that makes them is the Yankees Light. This is one reason I did not mind the Wild Card one dang bit. In a short series, the Rangers scare me. The Twins do not. Hey, they could win, no question. But they won't. Yanks in four.

Love the ever confident yankee fan. Seriously, good luck with your pitching, the lineup against righties is death, but bullpen is proved it was mediocre, and against teams like Minny and Tampa that will steal a base, you guys are in serious trouble outside the friendly confines of yankee stadium.

Truth of the matter is you need the homer to score, this, and the utter lack of starting pitching is going to be your downfall.

Can't say i'm all that worried. CC is money, Andy always steps up come post season time, Burnett sucks (but maybe he's due I dunno), and Hughes has been really good. The starting pitching is fine, and if they can get Woods and Mo in 8th and 9th the game is as good as over. Can't say that about Fuentes and Capps. Offensively the Yanks are better than the Twins. And it's not like the Twinkies have all that great of a rotation, especially when their top guy is Carl Pavano :r

The Yankees and Rays actually match up better than you think. Both have had almost the same issues leading up to the playoffs, should be an interesting series once they finish their respective first round opponents.

TWINS!

Yes, they (NY) have the "been there, done that" attitude and experience factor. The twins have been through some adversity this year and found their stride in the second half. When the pressure was off after they clinched the division, they seemed to relax and almost mail it in. Can they crank it back up again? I hope so. Will they be able to? Who knows.

The Twins do have a stronger bullpen than they have had in the past. There are 3 guys there that have at least 20 saves this season, and a decent lefty/righty ratio out there. The new home stadium could be a factor, and having home field is a bigger deal than it seems on the surface. It's not going into the cold of the NY stadium and that environment. While NY still had a great record, there is the possibility that age is catching up with them. That the wear and tear of the season has worn them down some. Neither team comes in hot. You can argue that NY played better teams at the end of the year, and that may be true, but they had more incentive to win those games, and they still didn't turn it on. As for Pettite, he's coming off an injury. Has he truly found his form yet? If he hasn't, it doesn't really matter that he's always turned it on in the playoffs. They'll bunt against CC and piss him off and throw him off his game. :r:r:r

All that being said, I like the Twins chances here and think it will be a much closer series than NY fans expect it to be. It would not surprise me at all if this one goes 5 games, and is literally decided by a couple runs in total differential through the series.

Go Twins!!!!

If I had to bet money on this series, I would probably say Yankees in five (unfortunately). It's no secret that the Yankees have owned us the last few years. I'm really hoping that this Twins squad with a beefed up offense, stronger bullpen and no Joe Nathan can actually get it done this time around. Losing Justin Morneau to a concussion earlier in the season isn't going to make this any easier either.

I have a hard time believing that chart as there are so many Northern transplants in Florida, you'd find as many Yankees fans in Tampa, as you would Rays fans. I know this from sitting in the Trop with my Yankees hat.

But it's an internet poll, so it must be accurate.

They should create one showing how many people outside the twin cities believe that crap about the Yankees NOT getting into the Twins heads this year.

In any event, I'm using it as my computer wallpaper at work.

Besides, unless you are a Yankees fan, how could you NOT hate a team that has at least 4-5 times as many World Series rings as your team if you're lucky. In most cases, the numer is 8-10 times as much.

Sure they have deep pockets, but so does Boston and they're one of those teams that the Yankees have 4 rings for every one of theirs and whine about it every October from their couches.

Haters gonna hate.

Love that chart. It clearly had to be a joke and not have any validity to it.

I have to agree with Peter that in Florida alone, most of the heavily populated cities are loaded with Yankees transplants.
Then take NJ as another example. Northern Jersey is comprised primarily of Mets and Yankees fans. Central and Southern Jersey is split with NY and PA teams.
In Florida, heck if you can easily get a ticket for a training game in Tampa.

That said, I can understand the hate.
It is sort of like the Bulls, the Patriots, the A's and so many others that are proven winners repeatedly. After a while, jealousy is masked via hatred.

In the end, I am glad I have been on the Yankees side since 1966.
I have lived the painful years and have enjoyed many great ones.

The Poet
10-08-2010, 02:57 PM
Well, I can tell you one group of people, aside from Yankee fans, who do not hate the Yankees. That would be all the other owners of MLB teams, because they know that whenever the Yanks come to town they will likely sell 10,000-15,000 more tickets. Some of those extra fannies will be there because they hope to see the Yankees lose. Some will be there because they want to see future HoFers like Jeter, A-Rod, Mariano, etc. play ball. And many will be there because they themselves are Yankee fans. Hey, it ain't just in Tampa where you see those Tiffany "NY" caps.

I love it when people complain about the Yankees spending money and buying championships. They play under the same rules as everyone else and pay the most in taxes to the other teams and they never complain once about it. How does it feel to be a Pirates fan to find out that the team has been making millions of dollars in profit al these years and they still refuse to spend the money on the team and put a winning group together. The Yankees will gladly have a losing revenue season if it means winning the World Series. Other fans can only wish they had an ownership that would do that.

The Phils are the only thing I'm worried about. :) Have to play whoever is in front of you, "One game at a time". I'm still enjoying the others series though.

FWIW I picked before all of the divisional series started, Yankees, Rangers, Giants and Phils. If that turns out to be true, I think both the NLCS and ALCS would be entertaining and close series. But, I know you don't like to "pick" series, Thomas. To each, his own.

As a Yankees fan, I am genuinely concerned.

I am concerned because last year, I bought a great Yankees hat while in NY that had all 27 championships on it.
Then, as I was leaving the hotel, I lost it.

This year, I go back to NY and I find the hat all over again and I buy it once again.

Why concerned? After seeking this hat out so much, what the hell will I do with it when the Yankees now win #28?

I guess I will have to plan another trip back for this updated version or stitch my own 2010 on it.

I don't want to kick the Twinkies when they're down - as I've said, I like and respect the team and organization - but it seems they may have made the same error a lot of fans, and so-called experts too, did by assuming that the Yankee pitching staff was C.C. plus a couple of other guys. Turns out, C.C. pitched the worst of all, though good enough to win Game One. Andy did what he's done more often than any other hurler in the post-season, and Hughes showed you why he won 18 games this year . . . and why the Yanks have been protecting him for so long now.

Besides, it's October, and time for NY to shine. ;)

I read some crap online saying they thought Girardi purposely had the team lose games in September so they could play the Twins in the Wild Card round.

Total nonsense. Although it is true that Joe may have pampered the starters a bit to get them ready for October, it is important to note that, in the last 10 games, the Twins went 2-8 and the Rangers 6-4. And this is not to mention that the Rays weren't exactly burning up the joint themselves late in the season, and only finished a game in front of NY. So such a plan on Girardi's part could have blown up in his face, and Yanks could have quite easily faced Tejas instead, had things gone just slightly different.

I have on of those too.
Is it the one with the #4 and #7 train along with the Mets and Yankees symbols?

Nope, Carlos, mine's different. There's a white circle in front with red baseball stitches, and Liberty's torch inside. On either side are the respective Met/Yankee "NY", with Subway Series in script below it.

I hope this week off for the Yankees does not hurt them.
