View Full Version : Customizing a Zero Halliburton

I just picked up a Halli from ebay for a very decent price. It's got a couple scratches on it and it got me to thinking, "boy... I'd like to have this painted. Maybe blue or something."

Any ideas on who could do such a thing? I was thinking an autobody shop (because the paint would need to be very good in order to not chip, etc).

I think it's be cool to have a unique case. Any suggestions would be swell.

:D

You are on the right track. Yes, some body shops will do paint jobs on specialty items. Just call around and see what they say.

If it's not too crazy of a pattern, try powder coating it. There are some at home kits now that do very well. Or just ask autobody or custom chopper shop if they can powder coat it.

I actually wanted the whole thing to be one color and glossy (kinda like the paint of a car).

edit: just looked up 'powder coating'... seems like it would produce the desired effect. That said, I'll probably have a professional do it as I don't wanna eff it up :)

I've been thinking about doing one for a long time but have never come up with something I'd always want to look at. I love Sean's but would be a little worried traveling internationally with it. If TCU wins the national championship this year (go Frogs!), I might be persuaded do an airbrush to celebrate; otherwise I think I'll just stick to my gunmetal.

I can create, for anyone for a price, interior lighting for the glowing effect that Vin speaks of that runs on batteries...that way you don't feel unworthy smoking near ToE's naturally glowing cases.

I brought it in... the auto body shop said they could do it for around $100, but they'd need to remove the rivets and replace them... considering the ones currently in there are stainless steel, the new ones wouldn't be airtight (which would create a problem).

I thought it'd be easier to tape them off than they thought it would be. I'd rather not have this thing disassembled...

Just throwing the idea out there where you could play with sandblasting.

If the scratches dont exceed too large of a space you could have a vinyl shop make a die cut sticker in a logo/design/etc (either a negative image or a fill in image) and stick it on th ebriefcase. then have the briefcase (either inside, or around the sticker) sandblasted to create an image. That could be a cool idea!

Dude.. that COULD be pretty sick! I'd have to think of something i'd really like... that's more specific than simply changing its color.

Also, the scratches/flecks are VERY minor... I'm just anal. Hahaha...

How would it work on brushed aluminum, though?

I'd really like to find a way to do something cool and unique and cover up the few scratches on the front, but also not have it cost $1,000. Sandblasting, in theory, sounds like it would accomplish that well... I could even put a logo in the center or something...

The awesome news is that humidity inside that thing is rock solid.

I'm a minimalist by nature, so I'd probably just take a random orbital sander and fine sandpaper and sand it down to create a satin finish ... that'll take out the scratches and it's an industrial look that I find attractive.

You could probably preview this on a cheap piece of metal/alluminum.

DGK
10-01-2010, 12:12 PM
Hmmm... I wonder what that would look like...

Google failed me in my efforts to get a picture... the finish is a dull aluminum color with VERY tiny little half moon and circular swirls left by the sandpaper... the key is using the RANDOM orbital sander so that you achieve a random pattern instead of just making more scratches.

Depeninf on the depth of the surface scratches you are trying to remove . you'd probably want to start with 320 grit sandpaper and work your way through 400... maybe as high as 600 to achieve whatever level of finish you desire. IMO...600 is getting too close to polishing takes away from the look.

I used this technique quite a bit back in the early 90s when I did a lot of custom fabrication work with aluminum and stainless steel.

As for playing around with the idea to see if you like it, you can just take a cheap piece of mild steel to play around with instead of using aluminum or stainless

DBall
10-03-2010, 08:38 PM
I'm looking to get it done for a reasonable price. I know that 'reasonable' is a subjective term, but under $100. That duracoat stuff is inexpensive and apparently made to bond to stuff like brushed aluminum and make a nice, hard coat.

DBall
10-04-2010, 04:01 PM
Wow... everything I've read about duracoat sounds like it'd be the perfect solution! all ya need to do is scotchbrite the aluminum a bit and it's good... plus, it's apparently super-hard and would be very difficult to chip.

Crazy thing is, the paint and hardener is only around $20.

I'm gonna play with some pictures and see what color I'd like best. Blue would be unique, but black is always an awesome choice.

Decisions, decisions...

Here's the response:

Greetings,
We are sorry to hear that you are unhappy with the OSHA Blue color. From your photo, this color appears to be correct. This is the OSHA Blue color as OSHA has identified it. Since this is apparently not the color you hoped for, we will send you a replacement in the color of your choice. We do offer 10 paper color samples per year at no charge if you would like to actually see the colors prior to making your choice since print and online images tend to not be the best representations of color. We recommend choosing a couple of our blues that appear close to what you are looking for and then requesting samples of those colors. Once you decide on a color, we will send the replacement at no cost to you. Most of our colors come in a Matte sheen. If you are looking for a high gloss, you will need to top coat with DuraCoat Gloss Clear.

Best Regards.
I asked them how they looked similar in any way and asked if they could point me to the one that looks the way OSHA is advertised to look (I did so politely, I think... hahaha). I also included this picture

Hahaha... seriously, though, I had one and bought 3 more because I found a guy here locally who was selling them for a great price. 1 was sold immediately, the other was supposed to be sold, but that didn't pan out so it's going to another brother (also for what I paid for it, no profit). Actually, tonight I took the automotive clear coat off with a liquid stripper and cleaned her up with steel wool. As expected, chemical stripper doesn't touch Duracoat. The steel wool had the additional benefit of cleaning up some of the imperfections in the finish caused by too much pressure on the airbrush.

Yesterday I installed a regulator on the compressor so the airbrush can be run at the propper psi. I'm feeling good about this.

Stay tuned. First blue coat tonight.
