View Full Version : Mobile Stogie moving to new owner!
Good news for Mobile Stogie fans!
I have reached agreement to transfer ownership of the Mobile Stogie iPhone app to Colin Ganley. This is really good news for users of the app, as I have not had time to properly update and grow the app for several months. My family and I have moved from Michigan to Seattle Washington, which has dominated my time recently (new home, new jobs for my wife and I, and all of the upheaval that comes with such a move).
Colin is a real 'cigar guy', really involved in the cigar world, and he has some great ideas for enhancing and growing the app beyond what I could do anytime soon. He runs a website called "Cigar Research (http://cigarresearch.com/Site/HOME.html)", where you can find more info about him.
I really look forward to the improvements that Colin will make, and will continue to work with him to make this as seamless as possible. Nothing will change for current users of the app. The website will continue to support the app properly, etc.
He asked me to be sure to pass along some points from his perspective (direct quote from his email to me):
1. current users will remain able to use the app to its fullest and will continue to be able
2. plans exist to expand the database to include more cigar information
3. I have always been very impressed with your app and all the work you put into it and I hope to carry the torch and only improve it in the future.
Lastly, my thanks to the CA members that have helped and supported me in getting the app built originally. I could not have done it without your help :tu :tu.

Is Colin a member of CA Ken?
Not sure, but I suggested to him that he sign on and introduce himself. He is also involved in the European Cigar Cult Journal ... so clearly very involved in the cigar business.

First off, I enjoy the app Ken, you did a great job with it and I'm looking forward to further improvements. Second, where in Seattle do you live? I live in the Capitol Hill area.

Actually, we are a few miles north, in Edmonds ... but my office is in the heart of downtown. Once we get things a little more settled, I'll need to start figuring out places to smoke, and who is around to herf with :tu

Where is your office? I work in the Westin office building at 6th and Virginia. If we can squeeze another couple days of sunshine out of summer, we should grab an outdoor lunch and quick herf.

Thanks for the heads up Ken..............this is by far the best cigar app out there.
Looking forward to seeing what happens from here.
Cross platform would be my next hope for it (syncing to Ipad, PC, Touch etc)
I love mobile stogie and have put plenty of others on to it.

Any plans to port to Android? :) It wont be long before Android overtakes iPhone... if it already hasn't happened.
There, I am done campaigning :)

Thanks everyone for the kind words. Thanks especially to Ken for making this great app! I haven't really told anyone about my buying this from Ken because I just want to focus on developing the app and not so much on the PR.
CRIMPS, I hear you loud and clear. I really want to bring this to Android because I think that the users of Android are already more than those of iPhone or they will be soon. I'll keep everyone informed as progress is made.
There should probably be a solid update made before the holidays so I'll keep my nose to the grindstone. Ken has told me about what he'd like to have updated and also what some others have suggested. Please let me know what you would like to see and I'll try my best.
Thanks,
Colin

Nice to meet you Colin. I hear good things.
Like to see in the future...
The ability to add a marca or size that's not there and submit it to you for the masses.
Pictures! Pictures of cigars for vitola reference when searching or adding to humidor. Also the ability to add a box to the humidor or loose sticks and Take pictures of them with the phone.
Search feature using location to the nearest cigar store.
Humidor options like adding a field for temp and humidity.
Guess I can start with that. Let me know if any of that appeals to you.

Yes, the transfer from Ken to me made it go down from the store for a week. Nobody's ability to use the app changed during that time.
Now it is back! There are no updates yet but the process has begun behind the scenes. Go ahead and download it! It is still the best cigar related app out there and soon it will be even better.

I'd like the ability to copy a cigar already in the database to create a new one. Sucks having to re-enter everything for a particular cigar just because it's a different size.
Also, the ability when entering a new cigar, to search through the different lists by typing in the name/wrapper/etc instead of scrolling through the entire list.

Apple doesn't permit transfers of ownership through the app store so Ken's version had to be removed and then I had to submit the same version for approval under my account. I am still working with Apple to see how and if current holders of the app can upgrade without buying it again. Regardless, the app will continue to work with its current level of features. Updates to the database will work on the current version even if people don't upgrade.
So I'm working on it. But since it isn't an issue until there is an upgrade I am focusing more on the upgrade. I'll make sure to post something to CA as soon as I know what the solution will be.

I'm almost to the point of switching to a new app that is actually updated...hate to do it, but it's starting to get frustrating to have to almost add every cigar I buy because it's not in the database and other apps out there already have the features I want (and not to mention periodically updated)

Version 3.0 of Mobile Stogie has been submitted to Apple and should be approved soon.
This will not include an update to the cigar database. This update should be completed in about 2 weeks.
The Android version is under development but I expect this to take a couple months. Mobile Stogie is a passion project and I'm learning as I go. I'm sorry if this takes longer than people would hope but I'm working on it with all the time I have.
I think that people will be very impressed with the update 3.0 because it adds many features. The biggest one is that you can review your cigars and save you notes and scores within your iphone/pod/pad. You'll also be able to save photos you take of your cigars within the app.
Sincerely,

Thanks for asking. I've been looking for a way to help people transition from kens version 1.x to the new versions 2.0 <. Unfortunately Ken's version did not have a way to export humidors. Apple sees this as an entirely new app so they won't interrelate.
If you have v1.x then you will benefit from the updates to the database due in a couple weeks just like people with v2.x<. People with version 2.0 will be able to upgrade to v3.0 for free and all future versions.
If you have a 1.x version (ken's version) you will need to buy the new app v3.x< to gain all the new features.
I am going to offer a special heavily discounted price for a short time to make it easier for people with the early version to upgrade. When this is available, I will announce it on this site as well as elsewhere when that happens. It will be available aproximately when the database update goes live in a few weeks.
Thanks for your understanding. I hope that I'm adding enough value to the app to make it worth the switch.
Sincerely,

Version 3.0 of Mobile Stogie is now available for download and updating your version if you have 2.0 or higher.
We have been working on this for a long time and it is a relief to have it in the app store now. I think people will be very happy with it because it improves search and fixes some issues that were in previous versions.
In addition to that, 3.0 adds the ability to review and rate cigars. Check it out. You can be as specific or general as you want, using stars or descriptions. Also, you can add photos to your cigars in your humidors. So if you do a review and want to take a picture, you can do all that now.
The database of cigars is being updated now and I will let everyone know as soon as it gets published. This update will be available for people with any version of the app.

Free for those with v2.x or higher
I am pretty sure that I had 2.0.1 and it showed up.
If you have 2.0.1 or anything starting with a 2, then what you should do is go into itunes (1.)
2. go to "Apps"
3. click "Check for Updates" probably at bottom
4. let it update then sync your device to itunes and it will be there.
5. launch the app and you're done.
If you are doing your updates directly on the device or some other way, then you'll need to read Apple's guidance because I am not familiar with all the ways to get the update.
It is there for you if you have any version 2.x of Mobile Stogie. You just may need to figure out how to get updates for your particular setup. I hope this helps.

I get the same thing, that no updates are available for my apps. My concern with buying the program again is that I don't think there is anyway to get the inventory from the old version to the new version, and I don't feel like reloading it all again.
This is the biggest issue for me too, not the $4!

I pretty sure we don't need to buy the new version guys. I think we need to be patient with Colin on this one. As he mentioned, he is in Havana for the festival. I'm sure this will get cleared up as soon as he can.
"On another note, I am leaving for a week in Havana for work and won't have access to the internet. So please excuse me for not responding to the internet for a little while. My friend who is helping me with the cigar database update will continue to work on it and we should have it ready around the time I get back."

Same here my update won't show up here and I have a ton of custom added cigars in my database. Hopefully Colin can fix this when he gets back.
Curious.... I know you can export your cigars into a CSV but is there an import feature in the new version?
I can only think that the people who don't see the update are using Ken's version of 2.0.1. And people who are using Colin's version of 2.0.1 can see the update.

You're right about the versions. You need to have the version that goes by the name "Mobile Stogie by Cigar Research" in order to have a free update to version 3.0. For people with "Mobile Stogie", the new version needs to be purchased in order to obtain all the new features.
If you have the version called "mobile stogie" ie. Ken's version, then upgrading will not allow you to carry over your data. Unfortunately there was no way for me to allow this app to communicate with the old app. But you will of course benefit from all the new cigars and new features.
At the moment there is not an import feature but we are investigating that for the next update.

That's right. I am going to run a promotional offer as soon as the update to the database is up. We are planning to have it up by next week but we'll see how the implementation goes. We're working on it this weekend. I will post something here as soon as the cigar database is updated and will offer the promotional price right after that. It will probably last for 1 week.

Thanks for the heads up Brother.
Hey guys, voice from the past here :)
With all the life changes, I haven't participated much on CA for quite a while, but I keep an eye on this thread periodically. I'll be back actively participating for sure one of these days, when I get a little more time :tu.
Anyway, I thought I'd weigh in on this thread and give you my perspective on how this is going. I just got off the phone with Colin's developer, walking through some of the details of getting the updated cigar info into the online database. Sounds like they are working hard to keep improving the app. As I've told Colin, I remain very interested in keeping this alive and well, so have offered to work with them as much as needed to help them in any way I can. They are really great guys to work with, and I look forward to the improvements they continue to make.
As for the issue of having to completely reinstall (and buy) Colin's version, that really is a tough issue that Apple has not provided any way around. I know that Colin tried very hard to make it more of a seamless transition, but ran into limitations that he couldn't help. I am confident that his heart was, and is, in the right place on this. As Colin has said, those with my original version of the app will still continue to get reference cigar updates (lots of them are on the way shortly!!), so hopefully you still feel that you got good value from the original purchase. I have re-purchased the new version myself, and will continue to support them, and really hope others do as well. I know the effort it takes to build and maintain the app :D
I'm really glad to see the folks on CA still enjoying Mobile Stogie, and for the (as always) constructive feedback that you guys provide. Based on recent conversations, I remain confident that I did the right thing in passing this to somebody who has the time and commitment to keep it alive, and improving the app as well. Hope you all continue to enjoy it.
Now, let me go finish up this awesome PSP1, the first one from my newly acquired ceramic jar :D :D
Cheers!

For the past few days we have been adding cigars to the database. We did small amounts first and finally, last night we finished the job. The next time you update your database you will find over 9,500 unique cigars in the Mobile Stogie App. This applies to people with any version of the app.
As I promised, I am announcing this here first. With the people who have Ken's version in mind, I have lowered the price of Mobile Stogie by Cigar Research version 3.0 for next week. From Mar 21-24 you will be able to buy the app for half price. All you have to do is go to the app store and buy the app as usual. You will see that on those days the price has been lowered. The price you see is the price you will pay so wait until you see that it has gone down in price.
I, and my friends, have been working very hard on this app update. I hope that if you are happy with all the new features and the huge number of cigars now in the database, that you will leave a positive review in iTunes. It makes a big difference. Also, there have been a couple negative comments that I am trying to counteract. One said there was no search feature when there was. And the others were written during the transition when we were struggling to get our first updated version out.
Anyway, thanks for your continued support and I hope that you enjoy the update. If you have any corrections to suggest to me, please send it to support@mobilestogie.com. That is the only place I am certain to see it.
Sincerely,
Colin

Hi Tarks,
Thanks for the comment. I saw that as soon as I loaded it on my personal device. It has been fixed for those who have not yet updated their database. For those of us who have, we can just delete the ones from the wrong position because I have them also in the correct places now. I'm trying to figure out how to forcefully remove them from the wrong position but am not clear about how to do that right now.

Also, if you do an iPad version, will it be a different app, or one that can be used for both.
I'm glad that you are interested. This is currently something that we are discussing. The current app has the ability to export. So we're part of the way there. There are some difficulties associated with importing or synching. I won't get into all of that here because I'm getting ahead of myself. But anyway, we're talking about it.
As for an iPad version. We're also talking about this and taking preliminary steps. The app would be substantially different while still offering the same features. It would just have a bit more and also a different appearance due to the larger real estate.
So as for iPad, yes, an app is on the books but since this isn't my full-time job, it will take a while.
One thing about developing these apps is that we are miles ahead on concepts, features, and ideas for upgrades. The time consuming part is trying to code them, organize them, and then the really hard part is to make sure it all works right and doesn't negatively impact other features already working on the app. With all the features in this app already, this can be tricky. So anyway, there is a pipeline of ideas, the task now is to find the time to do the work.
This is a passion project for me. I wanted to make a cigar review app myself. When Ken offered to sell me Mobile Stogie, I thought it would be great because he had already built the basic architecture and I would just have to add on to it. That is true, it has worked like that but it is also slightly challenging to build on code that you didn't design yourself. The transition has been challenging but I hope that ultimately, people will be happy with the results.
Sincerely,
Colin

Oh, also, with an iPad app, the idea is for the two apps to be able to talk with each other and synch. We are also looking at being able to synch the same app on two devices. Complicated stuff for me so I don't have an answer just yet but am researching it.

Oh i knew WHY it happened, just wanted to make sure it got picked up as it is still a defect. Then again, I should have emailed it in too.
A simple workaround that cleans up many of these type issues is to close all of your running apps using the task bar and then power off/power on the device.
Double tap the HOME button, tap and hold on any running application in the displayed tab bar until it begins to shake and a red X appears. Click on the red X to close the app. Close all running apps. Use the Power Switch to power off and then back on the device.

What you should do is check to see if the image exists, if not, Remove it from the review and inform the user.

We have created another update for Mobile Stogie! It is a lot of work but as you know, this is a passion project. It was submitted to Apple a few days ago so it should be approved within a week or so. Any problems that you may have with it should be fixed. This includes users deleting photos and other items.
The appearance of the app is also updated in this version. In addition to the functionality changes, there is a sleek new design that I think is quite attractive.
We are learning as we go but we're getting better and I think this version is a major improvement to the app. We've got a long list of features we want to add and modify and we plan to chip away at the list as time goes on.
Thanks again for all your support. I really want this to be the best cigar app out there so please keep sending suggestions and ideas to support@mobilestogie.com.
Sincerely,
Colin

If you...
Do a review
Add a photo from the camera roll
Save the review
Delete the photo from the camera roll
The review will crash the app if you try to look at it
Just FYI
By the way, if you delete a photo that is supposed to show up in one of your reviews it will not show up. The app doesn't store the photos separately from your camera roll. So if you want to see the photos, don't delete them. This remains true in the update forthcoming but the app won't shut down anymore if you delete a photo and then try to access it through the app.

As long as the defect is fixed Its cool beans with me!! Software is all about graceful handling of things! The app should NEVER shut down on response to a user action, unless it is a closing action.

The update is nice but it didn't correct the problem of going to the 'reviews' page, clicking on the little magnifying glass symbol and being taken immediately out of the app and back to my home page. Sorry - no win, no cigar.

Ahaa! More progress is made. The glitch regarding being closed out of the app by clicking on the search icon has been cured. These folks are really working to perfect this app and I'd like to say a big THANK YOU to them. I appreciate their efforts.

Even giving the issues, which are becoming ever more slight, I love this app for what it is. I would like to see weekly reference updates but given that it is not a full time gig for them it is what it is. I still give it two thumbs up. If you could work out a way to import the humidors from the previous version you would make a TON of people happy!

i love the random selection by shaking my phone.
I would like to see a "recently" smoked list, based on what i deleted, or something

You're right! But, with regard to importing your previous humidor, for me, at least, that's not so important. I have trouble keeping my humidor current. I mean, I've already re- loaded it but I keep forgetting to keep it current. Oh, well....

I wish there was a way to upload your humi, or at least be able to upload the file for large maintenance and sharing....even an XLS would do.

I really wish that I could do that. I have a couple very close friends who had a ton of cigars in the old version. The problem is that there isn't a way to export from the old version. If that was possible, then an import could be possible.

I would love to meet an android developer who would like to help with creating it. It is hard to find someone who can do that programming. With a wife now and a full time job and a part time job I need someone's help to do Android. If you know anyone, please send them my way.
Sincerely,

You can email your humidors out to yourself or others. Mobile Stogie Pro allows you to do that as a CSV file which works in excel.
You cannot modify the file and put it back into your device though. It would be cumbersome to then have you go through and make sure you want all the changes. There are also other little issues with this like if you put a space or apostrophe in somewhere it would totally mess up your whole database.
I hope that is a solution that works.

Is there any plans for an iPad version?

Nice - thanks for pointing that out (*.csv).
The only other thing I wish would be after the 'Cuban' or 'Non-Cuban' when you get to the list that there was a way to skip down the letters better. If I want to go to RyJ I need to scroll alll the way down (or at least I think I do :D )

Colin, Bob or anyone,
Pardon me if this has been addressed and I missed it, but what happens if I add a cigar to the reference database and then that cigar is 'officially' added in a subsequent update?
Thanks!
DWCR_Bob

The cigar would be listed twice, once by you and once by us. We have no way to know if users have added cigars or what those cigars are. Trying to match on name or combination of maker and name would only result in more confusion.

Anybody heard anything from this outfit recently?? Tried contacting their support folks by email and got an "undeliverable" response. Did they just evaporate into the blue??
Fantastic! Welcome to the Pacific northwest Ken.

It works fine -- just don't request a database update (the db server is gone).

So... it works fine as long as you don't really use it?
Aside from the fact that database updates were, for me, much of the point, I get crashes when I attempt a number of other things with it, as well.

Mine is pretty stable -- I just add stuff locally and back up my iPhone frequently so that I do not lose my local database.
If I encounter a new cigar that is not in the dataase then I just add it. Yes, database updates from the server would be great, but they are not there so I worked around it.

Well, manual cigar adds is one of the other things that gives me occasional crashes.
